Black Spruce Harvest - Pt 6, Solo Canoe Trip, June 2019

  • Black Spruce (Picea mariana) is my favourite tree and firewood source in the Boreal Forest. The very fine twigs are the world’s best kindling IMO. The dead branches of the biggest trees are thin and can be collected easily by hand, or quickly by saw or axe. The tree grows straight, narrow and tall, and in stands there are usually abundant dead standing stems in the understory, easy to harvest, cut and split. For tarp poles and shelter building the long poles are the best, easily trimmed of their thin branches.
Part 6 in this series: Day 2 of a planned week-long solo canoe trip, Boreal Forest, Northwestern Ontario, mid-June, 2019.
Thanks for watching, please stay tuned for more videos in this trip series.

Another great video from the great north woods! I love my Silky saw for cutting and trimming dead, standing spruce poles in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for firewood while camping. I often cut the pole off a little higher where I'm comfortable and can more easily dodge away from a top that breaks free. Then I saw off the still standing lower piece that's ready to split. Maybe my back is just getting old!

I particularly appreciated the graphics you included about Black Spruce. I'd love to know how to distinguish Jack Pine and Black Spruce. That might be an idea for a video: "Identifying the Trees of Canada." I recall this past wlsummer we saw two trees that both looked like Birch but one was a different species. Never did figure out how to tell for sure what type of tree each was.

Hello again, Hoop! Excellent content, as usual. Nothing quite like time spent in the Boreal! I see we have similar tastes in wilderness saws; those Silky Big Boy 2000's are awesome cutting tools. At just 16 ounces and 16 inches in length folded, they are, IMO, the ideal packable wilderness saw, fitting nicely in my day pack and quite possibly having the highest weight/size to cutting power/speed ratio of any packable saw. Looking forward to watching and learning more from this series. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Happy 2020!

Yessir. That will start. Quick burn, tho. You'll need hardwood, or craploads of spruce.

Thanks the tidbit regarding lichenified spruce kindling. I "do it" but didn't realize why: the lichen is hydrophillic, so on a wet day they will retain moisture. I knew this just gathering after a rain but never cognitively realized it until you demonstrated it. Love the Northern Boreal wisdom. Sure like the Silky Big Boy versatility for canoe tripping, will move that over to my wish list! Keep 'em coming Hoop and best of the New Year to you and yours!

spruce and birch make canoe tripping and winter camping much more easy than a hardwood forest would,i think.easy fast starting without having to resort to fire making tricks and a big supply of wood that can be used without any heavy cutting.many times after a long day on the lakes I've just stomped a few spruce tops into the fire place and lite it with a scrap of birch.
no fuzz sticks or wax fire starters.a hot meal comes fast without a lot of fire prep work.
I have never camped in a hardwood forest but I read lots about picking out the right kinds of trees and cutting and splitting to just get started.

In Iroquois Falls my home town I remember the ground moving when the wind blows on the black spruce and their roots moved. During the horse logging days Abitibi Paper Company got very good natural regeneration from the layering of the bottom branches of the black spruce. Horse travelled around the small trees. Later the wheeled skidded destroyed this type of natural regen.

I see the point on the lichen but..... if its as dry as it looks the lichen covered branches will go up like gasoline. As you continue I see your point in the rain it won't be as sweet. I get a kick out of the on line groups FB specifically when they post the charts of good fire wood, its all hardwood! They must not live in the fabulous northern woods where spruce is King!
