The one hand shooting helped me so much.. I was shooting with both hands, I pushed with my thumb. I did this drill and my shot improved. And I started to use just one hand instead of both.
If you want to be a great shooter. You should listen to him. Also do his custom shot design. I immediately found my perfect jumper and he's not kidding about that.
One handed form shooting imo is beneficial for someone who just walked into the court, almost as a quick warm up...also one handed could be helpful for younger players that rely too heavily on their guide hands which could be messing with their shot
I see where you’re at, but the thing about the guide hand is that generally the issues are caused by something different… If you don’t solve what’s actually the root cause of the guide hand issues, one hand form shooting won’t help much anyways.
If you can't fix your guide hand with 2 hands on the ball shooting with one hand won't help you. It can actually make I worse because now you have no clue what to do with your guide hand.
@@ShotMechanics for the younger players, often time the root cause is the guide hand and pushing with it, single arm shooting gets them to be confident in not overly using the guide hand for power
Agree 100%. I believe you should almost always be practicing like you're in a game. Your shot changes a lot from just shooting around to being exhausted and out of breath. The only time I am casually shooting is when I am working on the mechanics of my shot, then I go out and try to apply it during a work out. And I don't even really consider that casual.
One handed shooting is the best warmup for me. Just gets my muscle memory right. I always did one handed shooting before practice in high school and college. Got me nice and loose. But I knew better when I started two handed shooting to start in my triple threat and then bringing the ball up through the window.
I have helped a ton of beginners with the one-handed drill. Kids that are heaving the ball up with two hands. It straightens up their form and they start being on the mark in a matter of minutes. It has it's place but it's not for more advanced shooters.
Personally didnt use it, but thats kinda where my head was. Can encourage them to not push with support hand. Feel like once thats out the way tho, then have them practice with the support hand on deck and do almosf the exact same thing. Some guidance, but no push still
To each his own coach. For example your shooting form isn’t great mechanic wise but I’m sure you shoot a high percentage. What works for you doesn’t work for everyone else especially young kids who are learning to deviate from the two handed push shot. Great content for starting this conversation!
Coach you are the goddamn goat. I wish I had more indoor court opportunities to work on my game. It’s hard being 25 and never playing in highschool, I really started getting into ball about 2 years ago, I’m 5’9 and can touch rim + am quite athletic but my shot fundamentals and dribbling definitely lack. Your vids have helped so much and I’m definitely atleast 50% better of a player since I started watching you about 7-8 months ago
I start my drill with around the world (key,mid,3pt) with different shot types in the mid. Then, 10 free throws. Then I go 35 but I add a 4th shot which is a step back to the three around the horn. Lastly, I have a list of moves that I go around the 3pt with (15 right now plus each hand). 10 free throws after making all those shots. These are all shot I have taken in game as well but endless you are a great shooter or have 2 hours on your hand, probably not the best thing to do lol.
Am I so old (and old school) that the 15 foot curl off a down screen (if the defender follows you... usually off the top of the key check after a dead ball, isn't "a shot that we're shooting anymore"? Damn I've been making a living off that forever. Great tip on the one handed form shooting (I also do exactly that!). Really liking these vids, thanks Coach.
This is a great video bro…I was so guilty of these but now I understand that these are not the way to work out and get better thank you for giving us hoopers a better understanding of what to do 🙏🏼🙏🏼💯
@@noahcowell. it’s not great Coach Collin is right the only thing I need go improve is that in a game to be able to do wat I do hesitations and driving but fixing my form and hand positioning as I know what to do I just have a problem in shooting form when it’s quick paced
One handed form shooting is crucial for beginners who shoot with both hands and start from the belly once they get rid of the both hands from the belly they can work on their shot mecanics
Coach I've always been visiting your website lately and always wanted to get my hands on your FINISH 15 workout, all of us especially young players sucks at finishing, either commiting a turn over or just get fouled, I don't have any means of online account to pay and also money to pay for that primarily because of this pandemic and my age, hopefully you can give your FINISH 15 workout away for a short amout of time, It would be a really big help for all of us and skyrocket our scoring!
Question, I see the basis for your analysis in 1 handed shooting, I myself am teaching this specific scenario as well, so what is the best route for players that cannot get situated with your off hand? I’m dominant Right handed (Student as Well), the issue I’m seeing over and over is his left hand creeps behind like a Chest Pass per say. I found it true that removing one’s hand would reassure the dominant hand and that guide hand is there to just guide. Definitely would love some feedback here, as again the issue goes back to a shot put push vs actual shooting with follow through and fingers. Ps keep up the amazing work ethic 💪🙏
I agree that the elbow shooting is not a good drill and not time efficient but I still enjoy it, I can’t help myself. And yes, please stop the casual shooting!
I think he says one-handed drills aren't what works for him because of what I noted in his shot. He flails the elbow out so he relies a lot on his off hand to shoot.
A dumb drill is doing one that does not relate to your sport of interest such as a balarina doing bench presses. All those drills that you singled out are very helpful in basketball. What is wrong, not dumb is how one does them. How else would you teach a player to hold the ball properly with his or her palm facing the basket, elbow in, L-shape between the upper and forearm, and adding the offhand (guide) without blocking the shooting window? Tossing the ball and shooting from the key elbow during practice does not literally mean it is worthless because a player will not get a chance to shoot the ball from that exact spot. Emphasing that the same mechanics apply to shooting the ball other spots is the problem. The only valid point in this clip is the intensity of execution a drill. You want a player to execute each drill trying to come as close to the game speed as possible (be quick, but don't hurry) to max success. Highlight a drill and gives your subscribes pointers on how to do the drill better, not discouraging them from doing the drill all together.
Im starting to get rid of my thumbflick but I’m noticing that the ball is going way off or an airball. Im using the coin technique to get rid of the thumb flick. But somehow my left hand keeps interfering with my aim and power.
That’s not a “shelf” that’s his set point the shelf is where you load the ball or otherwise called as a shot pocket or a dip at lot of coaches preach that you have to load it by your chest but that creates a segmented jumpshot (the ball is going up and your hips are going down) what dame does is load the ball by his upper thigh or belly button to create a one motion shot( ball go down as your hips go down, ball goes up as hips go up) that creates flow, power, and consistency into your jumpshot
The drills your'e saying are dumb are FUNDAMENTAL drills everyone should be practicing before doing "two dribble snatchbacks". If you can't make an elbow shot catch and shoot why practice the harder ones? One hand shooting is actually the best and setting up your shot. The guide hand goes on the side of the ball its not that complicated.
I've been involved playing and coaching for over 50 years and this guy spits a lot BS. When you're doing form shooting you are working on the placement of the ball on your hand and the release. Very important concepts for a young player to learn.
50 years of coaching and you talk like this "spits a lot of BS." One hand form shooting is a tool to get a new player from step A to B in developing a full shot mechanic. It has its place, but is limited, which I agree with Shot Mechanics. Have you seen coaches who yell at players and treat the game like it is a life and death situation? "Spits a lot of BS" makes you sound like one of those coaches.
The issue I have with this video is that host is being a prick. I agree that you should 100% practice for in game situations and with game time. BUT all the three things he complained about are not bad ways to warm up and also it depend on age and skill level of the person training. You got to start somewhere, and moving all fast when you’re still learning is not smart training.
This guy is wrong. My dad has me do the one hand shooting form drill, and he did it to. He had a better three point percentage than Steph curry in college. I'm just saying. 🤔🤔 This guy is so wrong it bothers me!
