RJ Hoops if you’re thinking while shooting you’re most likely gonna change the outcome of your shot depending on what your thinking about ex: changing form, unneeded adjustments, and some people think about the perfect landing because they think the ball is going in and that messed with your shot most times
Thank-you my 3 pointer was short every time and I didn't get why. Now I realize I can put the ball lower to gather more momentum and move my hand up the ball more.
Are you a Guard that regularly Dribbles the ball in your Offense and are you Short? If so... listen to this guy. If you are a Forward OR Tall OR someone that usually gets the ball off of the Kick/Dish from Inside or on the Wing from the Top? If so... listen to you coach. This guy does know what he is talking about. But what he knows and teaches is pretty much all built around being a SHORT, dribble heavy Guard. I'm not saying you CAN"T do it his way if you are not a short, dribble heavy Guard. But doing this his way takes away all of the advantages of being Tall and is unrealistic unless you are dribbling into most of your shots. Once you factor in coming off screens to catch and shoot or waiting on the kind of passes you get from the Top to the Wing or from the Lane to the Wing... you are now dealing with unreliable passes (most of the time). You'll be reaching wide to the Left or right, digging the pass off of you toes, pulling the ball out of the air as far as you can reach etc etc etc You will not have time to catch that crap pass and load it the way this guy says in time to get off a consistent shot. You will make more than enough shots getting into a Loaded position above the Shoulder if you are STRONG ENOUGH and your Hand and Wrist Mechanics/Form is right. You are not shooting the deeper NBA "3". If you can shoot 50 a day in practice and hit the rim each time... you are strong enough to shoot this way in games when you will usually shot 10 or less. If you are missing too many... your follow-through is probably your problem..

Hadn't played basketball in a decade. Ran into some trouble in high school that took the sport away and became resentful. Finally got back shooting during quarantine and man it feels good! Was discouraged because my jumper was trash but over the past few weeks has improved. Wild that one of the main things holding me back was old thinking. Used to always go with what was comfortable, but coaches seem to beat that out of you until you conform to what they expect a jump shot to be. Have always gathered it low with hand a bit to the right to get more control with my middle finger to get a crisp rotation. This video helped me see I need to go with what came natural! I've been struggling so much with shooting and I still am. I try to work on it but I can't see any improvement. I everytime I shoot the ball either air balls but is straight on or i hit the front rim everytime.
Thanks man, my shooting has regressed a lot over the years and I tried to get it better by going back to “fundamentals” but I realize now why my shot was getting even worse, I was practicing bad mechanics

Many sports train you this way, for basketball it could be advantageous to flat or toe strike, but for Maxim height, heel striking is biomechanically superior. Every long jumper, high jumper, and triple jumper in the world jumps off the heel for vertical force production.
It's more natural to jump off the balls of your feet when shooting.. it sets you in the ready position quicker... I dont know why anybody would heel strike really.

Always going up. Think about that, changes a lot. I heard Klay talk about it and started.making sure that once the ball is gathered for the shot it's moving upward. I stopped doing the dip and my rhythm improved significantly, and I have a quicker approach to my set point and release
Love the hand on the side or on the top of the ball. This step alone made smoother and my rotation so much better. The 2nd thing that drastically improved my shot was the position of my feet. I used to shoot with my feet straight forward, now I angle them to the side. These tips are really simple and your shot will improve in no time.

regarding the first point: elite shooters do not load from lower because they need the momentum at all. they shoot that way because they need to move as quickly as possible from the triple threat position to a finish. if they went from triple threat to high load, stop there for a second and tzhen shoot, the shot would be too easily contested.
Question I hope you answer: with the hand placement, how do players avoid side rotation on the shot? I have noticed a lot of players that catch the ball with a side placement of the hand release from their thumbs and index finger.
Funny story, loaded the ball lower because of this video, changed a lot of my mechanics. Eventually I was stagnating so I tried some new stuff like loading a bit below the chest and it felt so natural and gave me a bit more power. Guys these are general tips do what works for you always, not what's just comfortable, but what helps you sink shots.
That last one is really informative! So that's the reason why I would feel my pinky and ring finger sometimes doing the work when I shoot! I'll def try it tomorrow, honestly I would play ball rn if not that it's now 10pm lol. Tnx a lot man
Old time HS and college coach here. The video you chose here shows guys getting into their jump shot off the bounce. So, of course the shooting pocket is going to begin at waist level. The ball HAS TO move through waist level to release point (I used to call that "gathering"). But what happens when you're coming off a screen or spotting up on shots when the ball is delivered above the waist? Your method requires a significant dipping of the ball. Please don't pretend that you don't lose precious time when you do that. And your method completely takes your rhythm, momentum, and legs out of the equation on the sorts of shots I mentioned. I taught kids to catch with knees bent and hands ready....hands at shooting pocket height in block and tuck position...utilizing either a two foot jump stop, 1-2 stop or inside/outside pivot depending on the location of the pass and defender. Coached many great shooters in my day. Everyone wants to re-invent the wheel. But you simply can't change the laws of physics.
One huge piece of advice I’d give to anyone looking to become more accurate and have more follow through: Snap your shooting elbow at the peak of your shot. Right when the ball is aimed and ready for release, snap your elbow and continue to follow through. Kobe is a good example of this technique, just watch his shooting elbow. This helps me with contested shots, fades, and open shots. Another one is that I never think about my shot. Mostly because I don’t know when I’m going to shoot. But I’ve found it that I make way more shots when I just let it fly vs lining it up and measuring the wind ☝🏾
Can I ask (I'm new) - where are your eyes looking during the whole shooting process? Ok, sure at first you have to look at the basket, but then when you bring your hand up and start extending your elbow... is your shooting hand blocking the view of basket? Or is your hand off to the side of your eyeline? thx
@@nofurtherwest3474 that’s a great question! It helps me to not really look at the rim until I’m at my release point. For example, when I shoot free throws I look at the baseline kind of where the ref is at all the way until my shot is at its peak, then I look at the rim and follow through as normal. I only do this because I found that if I concentrate too hard on the rim, I lose focus on my other mechanics. I don’t really see the ball, because I slightly tilt my head to get a better view of the basket (See Steph Curry), and I have a pretty high release point to keep the ball from getting in the way of me seeing the basket. Hope this helps
I just started playing ball again. Great tips to try. Cant wait. The tip of my thumbs are getting sore and causing pain after awhile of shooting and i was wondering why.
Thank you you've helped me with basket ball I've started basket ball and they have been really tough no one would pass and I was really bad at shooting.
Loading the ball low helps initiate the legs into the shot creating more force, it’s not just about the arms. Women especially have to do this. Elbow under and directly behind the ball at release is essential. Ball should go from strong side hip and up in a straight line for consistency in shooting accuracy.
Having a little rhythm going into a shot is always helpful. Like 1,2,shoot. Or last dribble into shot is #1. Then grab and set is #2, then shooting is step #3. There is your rhythm for taking a shot so you don't over think. Also practice with music that has a good beat, it'll help get you into a rhythm too.
Makes so much sense. Now I know what was meant when they said Pistol Pete got his nickname from shooting from the side of his hip but that was actually helping him... awesome stuff.
I agree with the first two but struggle with the 3rd. Yes, I was taught, and teach, shooting from the Shot Pocket which is between, above the waist and below the chin for most players. However, your concept of the hand behind the ball seems to make the assumption that you bring the ball right in front of your face so that, in establishing a "shot line" ( for more consistent shooting,) you are dragging the ball on a diagonal line over to the right (or left if lefty) to lift, thrust, release/follow through. However, what if your shooting more to the right, like your thumb is more aligned with your right eyebrow so that it is easier to not only establish a shot line but is is actually more natural, comfortable? I am all about natural/comfortable. Larry Bird shot like this. I have a feeling he was trained by Dick Baumgartner the sound, really solid Indiana shooting coach. Great Video though. I may show it at my clinic I am running tomorrow.
Actually we have different body composition and shooting posture so just do what you think is more comfortable to you.. Kobe once said " make your own move"
Turns out I was mimicking NBA players the whole time but followed an old heads advice and started my shooting motion up high instead of down low. Will correct, thanks for the vid
Keep doing what feels natural. He will get over it especially if you make it! I coached for 40+ yrs trust me. Unless he is a my way or the highway coach, (not many of those around anymore) he might get mad but once it goes n he will get over it. These guys tips are great and I more thing is confident be confident.
Great advice! I was just telling my son yesterday that starting low puts the strength of your entire body into the shot. Then I find you video and...vindication! Lol Thanks for sharing what you know!
moving hand to the right to load, versus behind the ball, creates a slight spin that mostly tends to draw iron or spin so far away after a miss, that the big man has a harder time with the rebound. Moving towards top is considerable
Dang, I've been coached to heel strike and I've been coaching my daughter and now my 9 yr old. I'll have her try without and do my best with these tips and see how she does. Thank you and I'll do these as well with myself. Again, thank you!

this is why u play like zion and do the zion drive zion lay zion smash
I remember that tip from 2017. 1:30 I've always watch you're video see if you change your mechanics. But it's the real deal like always.
That last one was the perfect fix for me😂😂😂
Extremely thank you for your 3 tips, I was always getting trouble with my finger position and finally got an answer.
I was able to light people up way back when. Ive always loaded low. Good tip
This helped me improve my jumper.
I just started playing ball again. Great tips to try. Cant wait. The tip of my thumbs are getting sore and causing pain after awhile of shooting and i was wondering why.
I finally made it to the point where my shot spins out the rim.
Thank you you've helped me with basket ball I've started basket ball and they have been really tough no one would pass and I was really bad at shooting.
All you video is helpful even when you repeat stuff/fact about shooting
i needed help with my jump shot, because it sucked. So, this video is exactly what i needed, getting back to basics and fundamentals.
Hi coach Colin pls breakdown the shooting mechanics and form of Rhon Jay Abarrientos from the philippines thanks coach
About the best shooters in the NBA loading the ball lower, thank you so much for pointing that out. I can't believe how I didn't notice that sooner.
oh wow this makes so much more sense then what my coach tells me
For sure. Loading lower helps you put leg into your shot and helps provide fluidity to your shot... Smooth
Loading the ball low helps initiate the legs into the shot creating more force, it’s not just about the arms. Women especially have to do this. Elbow under and directly behind the ball at release is essential. Ball should go from strong side hip and up in a straight line for consistency in shooting accuracy.
I got back ball'in when i quit 8 years ago and got frustrated how did i hit those jumpers before. It helps! I made myself effective again. Thanks

Having a little rhythm going into a shot is always helpful. Like 1,2,shoot. Or last dribble into shot is #1. Then grab and set is #2, then shooting is step #3. There is your rhythm for taking a shot so you don't over think. Also practice with music that has a good beat, it'll help get you into a rhythm too.
what’s a tip to be a more consistent shooter?
@tim brooks thanks 🙏🏽
Subscribe to @shotmechanics 😜
Makes so much sense. Now I know what was meant when they said Pistol Pete got his nickname from shooting from the side of his hip but that was actually helping him... awesome stuff.
I'm the 15 view in this video
I signed up for like two different free workouts and I never received them in my email
I was ready to give up on basketball yesterday bc I make shots in shootaround but never in games, but I'm gonna tough it out and keep going
Drop a like on this comment if coach Colin is getting drafted on Thursday :)
Lakers get at me ;)

Actually we have different body composition and shooting posture so just do what you think is more comfortable to you..
Kobe once said " make your own move"
I'm blessed to have discovered shotmechanics
Yvan A. We’re blessed to have ya watching 😀🙏🏼
Turns out I was mimicking NBA players the whole time but followed an old heads advice and started my shooting motion up high instead of down low. Will correct, thanks for the vid
Who else came here after shooting bricks?
Me bro 😢
seriously mind blown with the last tip. i couldnt figure why my ring finger was sometimes the last finger on the ball. makes total sense now
I naturally load the ball lower than my knees and my coach gets mad at me 😂
yo same
Keep doing what feels natural.
Lol
Thanks for sharing what you know!
Thanks for the shooting help. I was making so many baskets and finally beat my girl at 1-on-1
I’ve only watched 3 vids from this channel and I’m already a big fan of it! I love this guy!
Even though all of your vids arr helpful this one especially thanks🙏
Thank you, Coach Colin. The information in this video was very helpful and instantly applicable.
Everything he said was facts 🤦🏽♂️
Authentic Vibe Jayy #FactsOnly around here 🔥🔥🔥
moving hand to the right to load, versus behind the ball, creates a slight spin that mostly tends to draw iron or spin so far away after a miss, that the big man has a harder time with the rebound. Moving towards top is considerable
If the ball is low it would be slow to shoot the ball....... I'm the bravest man alive!💪
Thank you for this. My friends always try to correct my form but they have bad form as well, I am so happy I found this video
1:04 flight's jumpshot

Four years ago😭 video was posted 8 years ago I miss the peak of TH-cam
Dang, I've been coached to heel strike and I've been coaching my daughter and now my 9 yr old. I'll have her try without and do my best with these tips and see how she does. Thank you and I'll do these as well with myself.
Again, thank you!
