- In this video I will show you how to do a complete refresh of your power cables in your Jeep Cherokee. This process is very similar to other Cherokees but today I will show you how to do it on a 97-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ. This process may be similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Comanche. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

I like the fact that you point out very small specific things like using dielectric grease , and also the size of the socket or wrench that you’re using. That is really helpful.... excellent job 🤙🏼
As someone who started watching other videos before doing the power cable upgrade, this is probably the best video on the subject. Every little thing I encountered that wasn't mentioned in other videos, was brought up in this one. Thank you sir
Glad you liked it!
I was given an xj by my best friend because my car had broken and I needed a way to travel to paramedic school. Everything was going great with the car until it wasn’t. My heat went out, in January, in Chicago so I turned to your videos to learn how to replace the water pump and it was extremely helpful, then my washer pump went out enter OutJeeping again, now I’m looking to change my radio and speakers along with my headliner soon and I’ve already watched your tutorials and am stoked that I’ll have them as a guide when I do make these repairs. Cables or no cables thank you for taking the time to put up these videos, saves me a ton of headaches and mistakes
Thank you for a very clear tutorial on cable overhauling. I have an 1994 XJ, I bought brand new and I drive by myself until now. I never change any wire on my Jeep and I will overhaul the main cables. Its very usefull for me as I love my XJ very much. Hope all Jeep anthusiast will watch this video. Regards from Indonesia, richard.
Thank you for your time and effort in keeping the xj fever alive...
I’ve been fighting a grounding issue with my 01 XJ - I need this kit! I really enjoy your videos
Your videos have been invaluable when it comes to upgrades to my jeep, and why I need them is I'm building a 90 xj that will be a JK killer.
I want my 2000 dollar jeep to outwheel and put perform a 40k JK but of course this has been a slow process because of limited funds and build priorities
Lmao
Your channel has helped me in 3 ways: 1) entertainment. Watching the offroad videos is fun. 2) you show me new mods that I didnt even know I wanted or needed. An example is the fan override switch. And 3) Just like in this video, you show me what to expect and provide an easy to follow how to.
I really appreciate channels like this. As far as the cables go, they are already on my list. I could definitely use them on my 99 that has frayed cables.
Got the Big 7 kit for my WJ, works a whole lot better than the factory and even stopped the random electrical issues.
Just got the big 7 for my WJ 4.7. Do you have the 4.7? Having difficulty finding details. Looks like person I bought Jeep off of made a mess of the wiring and having trouble figuring it out. Ground wires are a mess.
@@ianbestor1528 Ground wires should be easy, one goes from the engine (usually a valve cover stud) to the firewall and the other goes from the battery to the fender. The fender ground is usually located by the fuse box near the battery (at least on mine) while the engine ground is located on a stud on the passenger side. The power and ground for the battery system is no different between the 4.0 and 4.7
@@trakkerp4202 Thanks for the quick response! I think my firewall to engine is mislabled because as it's labeled it's way too short.
@Ian Bestor there's multiple stud on the firewall, could be the one currently used isn't the one meant to be used. I just posted a short vid on my setup if you want to take a look.
@@trakkerp4202 thanks for the helpful info. Sorry about your block, same happened to me two years ago. The dreaded valve drop blew mine.
I just purchased a Jeep Comanche the previous owner was just going to get rid of it. I don't think he knew how rare it was. I had to pull start it to get it home and came to TH-cam to look four tips on upgrades knowing the battery cables look pretty shotty. this would be a great upgrade for mine as I have not done that yet or diagnose the non starting problem yet. Liked and subscribed you have helped a bunch with details and instruction because I know nothing of these vehicles and will be going through all of your uploads. Thanks OutJeeping :)
i melted the OEM 4awg wire going from the batt to the starter and block on my '91 XJ (later found out it was a partially nuked starter), replaced it with 2/0 cable, replaced power wire from alt with 4awg welding cable and an addtional 4awg ground from batt to core support ran 2awg into the cab to an inverter mounted high in the rear compartment for running lights/tools as well as an aux fuse panel for lighting and accessories attached off of the 2awg run with 8awg, good video man i will say from experience, this is a worth wile upgrade, def worth the time and effort of doing the upgrade
Thanks for naming the wires you are changin in the beginning and where they go. That was the biggest help of all. Also appreciated knowing the range of sockets I would need. Great vid!
Need to replace mine on my jeep. After watching your video I know I can do it
You're video was very informative. You explained everything in detail. Thanks
Just did this on my ‘96- went with 4ga.
My Powermaster alternator wasn’t able to achieve 14V @ idle on my in-dash voltmeter before upgrade, but now it does 💪🏻. Good video!
thanks to your channel there upgrades coming to my jeep|! your 1 ton steer video helped me to decide what brand to use! i could use a wire kit because i to have a tone of electronics hooked up led lights, rock lights, winch and such.thanks!
This is a great product to add to my Comanche build that I wouldn't otherwise have known about. Thank you for sharing this with us and good luck to all who've entered the give away! If not chosen I will definitely purchase this to complete my build!
This is a fantastic Upgrading mod especially for some who is adding newer electronics to my Overlanding 98 XJ ...I was not aware of that inline fuse....that alone is worth the upgrade. Much Thanks.
you have helped in a lot of ways to keep my XJ 1995 on the road here in Aust. With throttle body upgrade, water pump And ignition tune up helped the old jeepers go a heap better thank you. I also have a Cherokee 4 door diesel 97
Very nice video very informative detailed could not have done it better myself keep up the good work my brother and thank you
Did I win did I win what did I win what did I win
Thank you for sharing! I learn a lot from videos like yours. I've been slowly restomod-ing my 93 xj for over ten yrs now and upgrading the electrical is next on the list before I can install my winch and accessories and other goodies. Keep up the good work and thanks again!!
Good video, going to incorporate this into my old xj
Hey Austin
Your videos have help me with a lot of different task I have done to my 01 XJ. Task such as my speaker problem being the most recent. My driver side speaker would cut out with the door shut. I found broken wires in the door jam after watching your speaker upgrade video. Other videos like headliner replacement, trans flush, key fob trick and brake caliper rebuild. Your videos are very informative, clear, great quality and easy to follow along with. Also you show you don't need a lot of fancy tools to get what your trying to do done on your XJ.
The 2 gauge upgrade will be great for my XJ. After fixing my speaker wire problem I plan to upgrade the the whole audio system and put some sounds in it. Also my 01 is a on going project, right now it has a about a four inch left bastard pack junkyard lift for now because im on a budget. Front bumper is off and looking for a winch and winch bumper. I have some LED pod lights waiting to go on, h4 headlight conversion installed. I think the wire upgrade will give me more light out of them. Slowly but surely my XJ is coming along. So this upgrade would be a great step in the build.
Thanks for taking the time to make great tutorial videos.
Joe
thanks for taking the time to do this video ,redoing a 1999 xj from the ground up
I need these to replace my ol wore out cables on my 96 xj. Now with your video I can install them myself. Keep the videos coming.
Nice job Austin.I made my own cables with a hyd. crimper and 4ga. welding cable...
This is an awesome video on how to do the big 7 upgrade. If anyone is going to be doing this to their Jeep but will be running a wench and whatever else you want to run and if you are on a budget then all of the stuff to make this kit yourself is cheaper to buy everything individually. There then would also be enough material to make your own wiring kit for a dual battery setup if that’s what you want to run. I was able to piece everything together including the crimping tool, 2GA red and black cable (5ft each), lugs, terminal connectors, heat shrink, and fuse/holder for around $130. The 4GA kit is around $100 from what I had seen and you may need to modify it anyways.
Is there a reason why the wire to the starter doesn’t get connected to the fuse that’s connected to the pdc if it’s connected to the positive terminal of the battery anyways? Does it need to be directly connected from battery to starter without a fuse?
I've actually been wanting these cables for my 99 Cherokee. I've had to replace the negative terminal already because it was corroded and when doing it I noticed my positive power cable isn't in the best condition. Right now I don't have the extra money to purchase this kit cause I'm getting married this fall and all my extra money is going towards the wedding. Also your video for the electric fan override helped me out a lot with an over heating issue I was having during the summer.
About to do this on my 5.7 Commander, only video I could find that used the same Jeep cable website I ordered from
Hey Austin, i haven't really commented a lot on your vids but i have been here since 500 subs. And the best thing about that is i have seen your progression in video making. You have made many videos that have helped me out but its not the subject of the video its your camera work. You unlike a lot of car youtubers, the angles that you show when fixing something or installing something are what really helps. Now a little info on my jeep. I bought it of this guy who clearly didn't do things by the book. there were random bolts in places and dont even get me started on the wiring, when i went to go look at the jeep i popped the hood and my immediate reaction was, "SHIT" The wire loom was all but gone and there were so many random wires that he put in that dont need to be there at all. NOW the most messed up thing was the battery terminals, The ground terminal is broken if i tighten it anymore the terminal will brake and i will have to by this kit anyways. Now for the positive i do have alot of accessories like you ( i appreciate that you point that out ) and my positive terminal cant fit anymore accessories. With this cable upgrade i would be able to fix all of the issues the previous owner messed up on and i would also have the peace of mind that my battery terminals wont fall off while on the trail. Anyway , just want to say thanks for all the vids and i appreciate you making them.
,Harrison

My original cables are really starting to show their age and can't be trimmed back much more haha. These would be a much needed upgrade for anyone with a XJ!
Thanks so much, ready to do mine.
Your videos have helped me so much through diagnosing problems/ adding upgrades/ and even maintenance! I really need a new pair of cables because some kind of animal started chewing into mine while I was away from home and being in college doesn’t give me a lot of money to fix it! Appreciate the content and knowledge!! Keep up the good work
Your video have helped me with putting head liner in
In my quest to figure out my mystery miss I was missing a ground that you showed in your video, some new cables would definitely help clean up the short butchered stuff that's on there now, thanks
Great instructions...clear and well thought out. Thanks
Amazing tutorial. Great work.
Thanks mate, appreciate the vid!
This is a helpful video. Thank you.
Recent subscriber, love your videos. I just picked up a '98 2 door that I'm reviving. I used to wheel all the time with the previous owner. Unfortunately health issues keep him form the trails anymore. His rig is somewhat of a legend in our local club. It has been sitting for 3 years so it needs considerable TLC. I'm doing it up right, he will be proud when I finish....and the club will too. Keep up the awesome videos!

Email sent, lots of pics too. Thanks again.
Hey what’s going on brother I love your jeep... I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport lifted with 33s green and I love the Jeep...And I would love to get all new cables I’m 61 And on Disability but I do what I can...Well thank you for sharing your videos... ☮️
Great video, FYI though dielectric grease is very non conductive, it is the very last thing you should be putting inside of your terminals, its purpose is to prevent shorts. It might very well be useful inbetween the starter positive/negative leads which do like to short if something gets in there, but it shouldn't be put on your ring terminals before they're tightened down.
I’ve had grounding issues with my 97 XJ cherokee batteries (yes two batteries) I am running a yellow top and red top for starting and yellow for long pulls when helping others up hills during events. Hoping this set up will cure some gremlins. I know it’s only for one battery but if it does the trick I know I’ll be buying a second ;)
how well does that g100 battery to chassis ground work? just snapped mine off as well and went ahead and bought some M8 bolts and lug. was going to keep the connection to the chassis but the way you handled that looks pretty sturdy my guy. curious to see if it held up strong. so far cherokeeforum and reddit suggest self taper but i like this much better. let me know
Thanks for all the videos you do u helped me in the injectors install.im upgrading pretty much everything on my 2000 jeep just put 3 inch lift ,gonna do the k suspension headlight wires upgrade next so the battery cables would be super for the next project.i watch all your vids so if something happends to my jeep i know how to fix it from your vids oh yea the chevy brake lines are also my next project thanks for the vids!
I Have a video on DIY battery cables that rival these, thanks for the video
your videos help remind me of all the things I need to do to my XJ lol
Your videos help me decide on a few parts for throttle body and steering upgrades and you make great videos going into detail showing step by step which most other videos fail to do👍🏻keep it up and my wires are corroded and are failing so I’ll need to upgrade them soon and also hoping to make a TH-cam video covering the install if I win them or purchase them
Did you notice better radio suppression/quality with the firewall cable? I installed my kit years ago but never did the firewall section as Ive been told the braided cable is better for suppression
I didn't notice much of a difference. The braided cables is mostly for flexibility. There is also another ground going to the engine block that isn't a braided cable.
This is awesome, just looking over the electrical system on my xjs. Winning this would be even more awesome! Cheers @outjeeping
Hey Austin how u been. Them doors i sold u are looking great man. Glad I could help u out witb clean parts for ur build and for more content for all of us following u. I acually just did a motor swap and it blew so i got my 2nd motor last night but the dodge alternator keeps burning up all my wiring due to running on board air, lights, 2000w power invter and a sound system. I appreciate how u make everything step by step. Keep on jeeping brother.
Yeah thanks again for those doors, i had them painted from a friend of my grandpas, the whole jeep needs a buff to match them lol.
Glad I could help u out if u need anything else will be getting some part outs again soon.
@@TheSilverSnatch If you come across a XJ 97-01 passenger side front door that is gunmetal pearl (light blue) lmk lol
I just got a set and installed them. I started my Jeep afterwards and it worked perfectly fine but two days later, my battery was dead. And ideas on why there would be an electric draw with these new cables?
There shouldn't be, I would go through everything again and make sure nothing is shorting out and has good clean connections. Otherwise it may be an issue unrelated to the cables.
Your videos really help me with modding my YJ. Especially this cable one since I'm planning on adding more speakers and a better radio. Nothing like a boom, Boom system just where I can hear it with the top and doors off.
Plus I have a winch and offroad lights that needs upgraded cables to supply the juice. Alot of this stuff carries over to the Wrangler and others. I learn alot from all your videos.
Ps what exhaust do you have on your XJ?
I have a Flowmaster super 44 with no cats
Thanks.
On the starter - the two wires within the loom are fused together into one unit. Do you have any advice? Thanks!
Oh, why I need them? I'll send you some pics, but I'm sitting in a field right now. Which is where me my girlfriend are. 2 dogs in our Jeep live now because we broke down while traveling. And the electrical system is one of the things that I'm upgrading before we get back on the road to Colorado. I stopped here even though we didn't have no money. And any place to live because I want to make sure that this thing was right. Before we went up in to Colorado, we're gonna be doing some high altitude 4 by and gonna go around mountaintero and I just want to make sure that everything was in good shape. So we didn't get hurt. Anyways, that's me. And that's my story.I have a good day
That engine fired right up..like a champion good upgrade boss...how much $$
Depends on what guage you choose, prices vary. Check out jeepcables.com
Great video Austin! But why did you choose the 4ga instead of the 2ga? I noticed you run lights and a winch...
4ga is all I really need for running the factory components. The led lights don't draw a lot of power so I am not to concerned. Also I don't run a winch but if I did they would come with their own set of cables going directly to the battery.
Quick question what type of bolt was used on that ground on your fender? My bolt snapped too and I believe I maybe getting a bad ground because of that too.
I used a normal grade 8 bolt and came from the back and bolted to the fender. Then another nut to hold the wires onto the new bolt stud.
Good vid man
Love the videos keep it up
Love your videos. I see I mite be to late for your giveaway. This is my next upgrade I will be doing. Why did you prefer the 4ga
In my opinion 4 guage is a big enough upgrade for the XJ electronics. I dont see the need to go bigger. It would just be harder to maneuver.
The Giveaway is now over, thanks for all your guys support and comments!
Cheers mate
OutJeeping has been a valuable source of information for projects on my XJ. All procedures are explained and thorough. I recommend for anyone who wants to fix or upgrade their XJ.
Good luck all
Outjeep, what do you reccomend for LED headlights?
Would 4 gauge be good for running a sound system , small led pod lights and future led bar?
I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee with a corroded Negative Cable that needs replacing. The short one from battery to fender is fine, but it's the long one from terminal to under the engine. I can't get to where it needs to be removed and wonder if I can attach it to another bolt somewhere on the engine? I live in an Urban environment without a garage or workspace, so I'm unable to lift the car.
As long as its a solid bolt to the engine block and not in the way of anything moving it should be fine.
When are we going to get a walk around video of your XJ?
Perhaps when the weather gets nicer so more towards spring.
I've been gathering parts to swap into my 01 for a bit, plan on using your videos for the axle seals and u joints here soon. I've got a headliner that needs to go in as well but I'm putting that off till I decide what color to repaint the plastic trim pieces. Thinking tan and black.
Anyone know if this set is better than the one K Suspension sells? I've been looking at it and the headlight rewire kit.
Thanks
Will the 4ga be enough if you do the 160 amp alternator upgrade? Or would the 2ga be better?
From what I researched, 4ga can handle up to 190 amps, so you should be fine. 4ga is already a large upgrade from the factory size. I think you should be fine but 2ga you should be plenty safe.
Kool rigg men.
So what size fuse did you use.?
I have an 04 gc 4.7 ho and i want to replace that fusible link with a fuse and wire...maybe a 4 ga....but still don't know what fuse to use...any idea..? Thanks!
I used a 150amp fuse for a 117amp alternator
I've got an 02 4.7 HO. Having trouble finding any more info for replacing the Big 7 on the 4.7 specifically.
HI Austin, thank you for this video. I just ordered the cables for my XJ. I noticed you have an extra bracket holding down your battery, that's attached to the member by the radiator. Is that something you had fabricated, or purchased somewhere? It seems like it would be really useful.
They come factory with that little bracket. I for some reason lost mine so I made my own out of some 1/8" steel stock.
I have a 2020 ford ranger wildtrak
What size split wire loom should I use
Depends on the size wire, I think I used 3/8".
What brand fenders Flares are those ?
Napier Precision Products - Flat Flares
finally someone makes it clear what heck is going on...my daddy said son NEVER TOUCH THE WIRES...no he didn't, thank you
What’s the difference between the 2ga and 4ga?
2ga is thicker than 4, usually your fine with 4 unless you have a bigger alternator or something else
is that a lund moonvisor? if so where did you find it?
Off of craigslist, there are a discontinued product.

I think it's funny how everybody says military grade stuff when you go to buy it everything in the military is broken
I've discovered your channel recently, and it gave me a bunch of useful information, as I am new to all that jeep thing. I've bought my XJ in January this year, and it is in not a good shape for now.
