I’m sitting here in Gmail thinking ‘how the heck do I start organizing this for a more productive New Year’ and I head straight over to you Steve, because I knew you’d have the perfect demo of it. Definitely useful, thanks!

Brilliant! Thanks Steve. I had (stupidly) been applying the labels manually after the emails arrived and not taken the time to work out how to get Gmail to do it automatically. Now thanks to your video I can finally make it work the other way around. Yet again your videos have saved me time.

Gmail is awesome and powerful. I've been using Inbox for over a month now and I've grown tired of it so I've come back to gmail with my personal account.
You covered the main points pretty well on the video (create tag, color tag, filter) as well as mention the multiple inboxes lab feature. As much as I love Gmail, I have to say that the settings section is horribly ugly. What you pointed out in the video, about including colors in the label section, is accurate and shows that Gmail settings needs a drastic change in design - or should I say "material design".
Also, I personally thought it was a keen idea to show some messages from the community in the video. Kudos on that!!
Last point, and totally unrelated, I saw in your inbox my activity on Patreon :-)
I had some bank issues and had to readjust the pledge. Luckily everything is working just fine now. Happy to be supporting you!

Steve: I set my labels with a-z and have sub labels under most of the a-z. What I do to keep the most important label on the top is i give it number 1 then the name for example I would have 1CALENDAR and this would be on the top and I would not need to scroll for it.
You could put 1-9 numbers and categorize by importance. Very customary. I do agree about allowing us to color in the labels tab in settings. Maybe an additional tab category in settings should be COLOR and in this page you could create a color and categorize it or associate it by type of label, etc.

Looks like lots of options in gmail but incredibly difficult for for those of us that are of the older generation and not computer savvy. My yahoo is simple like my older lifestyle, create folder ,name it ,tap move as I read it,done. Gmail looks useful for people who have multiple business programs. But must us older folks like things simple gmail is anything but. Thanks for the ear for me to bend.

Hi Dotto Tech. Great video by the way. I am wondering if you know of a way to only view some tagged emails in their tag folder and exclude them from being viewed in the inbox? I have many emails coming into my account that I don't often need to read but they are still important so I would like them to sit in a folder out of the way until I need to view them. Do you know of a way to do this?

Steve, this was a very helpful video. One Question - If you get emails from multiple addresses in an organization and you want to filter all those emails into one Label, is it possible to have multiple addresses in the from box, if so how? I tried a comma between email addresses and that did not work, can this be done, or do I have to set up a separate filter for each senders email address. Thanks, Steve Munier

  • @BjarneJSutherland
    @BjarneJSutherland 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry Steve, but that is incorrect. You don't have to "Enable multiple inboxes" in Labs to be able to download from another account. I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, why not update the information with a correction. The multiple inboxes feature, creates different frames on top or on the right where you can see all the emails with a specific label. Very useful if you read mail sent to different addresses.

I am confused. Gmail has changed a little since this broadcast.Labs is not shown.A tab marked Multiple Inboxes is there with fields to fill in. What my objective to do is, have my emails with colored labels. I go through the process, or I think I have, I have applied labels, but next morning the email is in my inbox without the labels.I also have told certain emails to skip the inbox and go directly to archive, which I would hope would be the labels folder. Nothing is working and I do not know why.

    Excellent video, Steve!
I currently use webmail with my ISP for my domain. I want to switch to another ISP. My current ISP does not have an email export feature - believe it or not! Well, the only way to export is to highlight several emails and export them as a group. Not very functional.
So will Gmail access all the emails from my current ISP and bring them in as individual emails? I currently have several folders that I've divided my emails into. Do you think Gmail can import them folder by folder and allow me to color code them by the folder categories they're currently in?
I hope all this makes sense.
    Have a great day!
    Mark

Thanks for this great video about gmail features, I am trying to get control of my email situation. I have over the years some how accumulated an ISP email addresses x2, a gmail address, iCloud/.mac/.me addresses x2 (one an alias), and my corporate exchange email address. I want to streamline this mess and I am thinking that gmail is probably the best option for bringing them all together into one mailbox with the labels function. What do you think?

I have a label for all TH-cam mails called "TH-cam", and I have a filter that assigns this label to all mails from TH-cam, and I have nested label in TH-cam called "Live", and correspondingly I have a filter that applies "Live" label to all TH-cam mails that are notifying me about live videos. The problem here is that I don't want nested label "Live" mails to appear in parent label "TH-cam". May be somebody knows how this could be done ?

It should make no difference, you will still be accessing those resources via your Google Drive account, it does not matter which email account you use. But you will have to also sign into your Google Account.

Thanks for the great video, Steve!
If we make a filter using the "contains" option, can this be only one keyword per filter or can you have multiple words? For example, if I'm trying to create a filter for Sports related emails, could I have one filter setup containing the keywords Basketball, Football, Soccer etc, to be grouped under a Sports label? Or would each keyword need its own filter?
    Thank you!

xderiwx Sure, you can use multiple keywords.

      Thanks!
Forgot to ask in my previous question, would these keywords be searched by gmail in the body of the email itself, or only the email subject lines?
      Thanks again!!!

How do you use gmail and keep from having to download all attachments i.e. excel files, word files , ppt files that are sent to you in a email. I either have to download or open with google sheets/docs etc... which I prefer to use excel/word etc

HI there! I have followed these steps multiple time and chose colors for my labels. I am not forwarding from other inboxes, but still want the color labels to show in the email when it is received. I am getting the color coding in the sidebar, but not in the email itself in the inbox. Have you ever seen this? How can I fix it?

Hey Jeni, did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the same problem. I looked over the filter and label settings and couldn't find where I had messed up.

So I just set this up and I am still not seeing any labels applied. I tried 3 different label categories. I have 3 different email addresses. Any help/insight would be great.

Hi Steve, I just opened a label and selected all the emails in the label and then added them to a label... now all the emails in that label are gone - it says "no conversations"? Not sure what happened but need to get them back! Thanks for your help.

+Kathy Lyons I have no idea what happened, but do a search for the email address of the person who sent you the email to find it again.
