  • This is a video of a walking tour through the Garden District neighborhood of New Orleans.
The garden District was the first suburb in New Orleans. As the original settlement in the French Quarter grew, and became congested, the wealthy merchants decided to display their wealth by building beautiful mansions in what is now the Garden District.
There are many architectural styles in the Garden District - Victorian, Elizabethan, Mid-century modern, and Greek Revival are just a few.
Roughly, the Garden District is bounded by Saint Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, and from Louisiana Avenue to Jackson Avenue (though some locals dispute these boundaries).
Most of the Garden District comprises of residential homes, with a spattering of multi-family homes and condo developments. Most of the commercial properties are on St Charles Avenue, Prytania Avenue, and Magazine Street.
