  • In this video, Andrew with Free Tours by Foot walks through the neighborhood where New Orleans' history as an American city began, the Central Business District. MORE NEW ORLEANS VIDEOS - • New Orleans Virtual Tours .
    One of the major areas for visitors to stay and the home of the National World War II Museum and other great spaces for history and art, this neighborhood still gets overshadowed by the French Quarter next door.
    Today we give it its moment in the spotlight.
    Put on your headphones or listen in stereo if you can because this was recorded using binaural microphones to make it sound like you are hearing the street sounds live.

    I have to ask, are you using notes or is this wealth of information coming from just a love of the city and all it encompasses? I have a distinct feeling you’re not using notes so I’m impressed! Andrew you’re turning yourself into a New Orleans treasure. We all appreciate you and all you share. Thank you.

      Only to make sure that he has the right route own. Other than that, Andrew doesn't use any notes. It's the result of endless reading and a curious mind.

      I knew it! Lol, the facts flow so smoothly when he’s discussing even the sidewalks! Andrew is a New Orleans historian and the city is lucky to have him.

    I visited New Orleans 3 weeks ago. I binged a ton of Andrews “Free Tours by Foot” vids and I was prepared for my week visit. Glad I did too. I did not mind the party goers, weed smoke, homeless, noise or filthy Bourbon St. hahaha Why? Because I was well prepared to visit thanks to these videos and I had much more to explore than just Bourbon St (which is still awesome!)
    I fell in love with this city and it has called to me everyday after I left that I am returning in two months. ❤️❤️❤️

      Hey, thank you Rayanne! I come from a linguistics and performance background, but there are fortunately all kinds of ways to learn about New Orleans - between the books, museum exhibits, talks, etc., plus the lived culture of today in terms of food, music, festivals, and the historic events happening in front of us, there's really more than a person can keep up with. So appreciate you watching!

    When I visited New Orleans in 2016, I stayed at the hotel at St. Charles and Poydras. The name has changed since then, I see. I would look out my hotel window to see Lafayette Square. I had the best eggs Benedict in their restaurant. Instead of English muffins, it was set atop fried green tomatoes. Mind blown!

    Andrew, have you ever considered doing a documentary? You know a lot of details about New Orleans past that would actually be interesting in a documentary format. For instance, the Native American trade routes and interaction with the French and Spanish settlers. You have a great voice for that type of project.

    We were in New Orleans for 6 days in October 2023 for those interested we found some great restaurants:
    1) Gallier's Restaurant & Oyster Bar - great charbroiled oysters! 2) Oceana Grill - love the charbroiled oysters there also as well as The Taste of New Orleans.
    3) Blue Oak BBQ - great wings, brisket and pulled pork.
    4) Vacherie - great egg sandwiches for breakfast.
    5) Antoine's Restaurant - super expensive but a nice place to dine. We had oysters and shrimp & grits.
    For those who want to hear jazz, we went to Maison Bourbon twice. No charge to enter but you must buy a drink every set and should tip the band when they come around with the tip jar. Enjoy!

    2:20 Marilyn Monroe favorite hotel. She liked to stay in the room overlooking the pool
    7:00 Lee Harvey Oswald was filmed passing out flyers for Cuba on the street corner and was arrested there too
    Side note: If you go up to the Hotel Royal Sonesta is where the Grateful Dead was "busted on Bourbon Street" from there song Trucking.
    Side note: Congo square. The old jail (the real old one not there anymore). 1891 New Orleans lynching. 11 Italians were hung and hunted down one night. The biggest lynching in Americas history. As retribution to Italians they made Columbus Day a national holiday. 1321 Orleans Ave, New Orleans, LA 70116. I believe this is the old jail location, after hours of research.

    We just returned from New Orleans. We stayed at the Roosevelt and frankly found Canal Street somewhat terrifying. : 0 ( I wish they would do something about the street people. Investing in housing and treating the homeless population would benefit the city, imo.
    Also, what is with having no public bathrooms and no businesses allowing you to use theirs even when you're spending money in them? We were literally forced to leg it back to our hotel every time we needed a quick bathroom break. IMO, that's unacceptable. We would have explored more and definitely spent more $$ had we been allowed to use a restroom while we were out. New Orleans could learn a thing or 10 from Vegas with respect to being visitor friendly.

    • @FreeToursbyFootHQ
      @FreeToursbyFootHQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Leslie. Many places were not allowed to offer public restrooms unless the health inspector had ok'd them for Covid compliance. The city should have done something to accommodate visitors better. Things have recently changed though.

    • @backyardbreeze112
      @backyardbreeze112 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FreeToursbyFootHQ We went from May 19th - May 23rd. There was quite literally nowhere to use a restroom unless you were sitting down to eat at a full service restaurant or at your hotel. You can only eat so much during the day and even places like Subway, Smoothie King or CVS...all places we spent money would not allow you into their restrooms. Our hotel required a key card to get into the lobby bathrooms so I assume that's the norm with other hotels too. I've never seen anything so insane in my life.
      I wanted to love it, but I don't think my bladder could take it again. LOL.... : 0 ) Vegas or anywhere where businesses allow you to use a bathroom or places that provide public restrooms are a much more attractive bet when it comes to travel. Why spend thousands to be told to "hold it" for hours on end if you want to explore?

    Im staying in the Warehouse district because it's between the French Quarter and the Garden District. Is it safe to walk at night coming from the French Quarter or should I just take Uber?
