Hopefully this should answer like 90% of the questions here!! haha *Japanese permanent straightening aka rebonding aka thermal reconditioning* -Created in Japan by Yuko Yamashita, patented in 1995 -Permanent (new growth is not affected) -Uses chemicals to break disulphide bonds in hair, a flat iron to straight the hair (setting it into place), and then chemicals again to re-set the bonds -New hair that grows out will be natural, so if you don't get that treated as well you can have a strange divide between straight and curly hair -Can't generally be used on already treated hair (hair that has been dyed a lot, etc) *Brazilian keratin treatment aka Brazilian blowout* -Created in Brazil by Mauricio Ribeiro, brought to US in 2007 -Said to last 3 months on average (eventually washes out) -Coats hair strands in keratin treatment to reduce frizz, not generally strong enough to perfectly straighten curly hair -This is the treatment that uses formaldehyde (some types don't, but those supposedly wear off much quicker since the formaldehyde is what's used to bond the keratin to the hair) -Can be used on dyed hair *Relaxers* -Created in USA, 1905 by Garrett Morgan -Said to last 6 - 8 weeks (oops! I was informed this timeframe is for the time you can last before needing to touch up new hair growth, and that the actual relaxer is permanent) -There are several types, but they use chemicals of a higher pH than Japanese straightening to break down the disulphide bonds, relaxing tight curls. The bonds are not rebonded afterward like they are in Japanese straightening. -Some types have strong chemicals that can burn the scalp *Sources* Brazilian blowout maneaddicts.com/2016/01/28/guide-to-brazilian-blowouts/ www.instyle.com/hair/brazilian-blowouts-guides-tips jpgedia.blogspot.jp/2009/05/historical-note-on-brazilian-blowout.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_hair_straightening Relaxers designessentials.com/professionals/education/hair-basics/types-of-relaxers/ Comparisons: bellatory.com/hair/Hair-Relaxing-Versus-Hair-Rebonding-Which-Is-Better www.bellemocha.com/2013/08/japanese-straightening-healthier.html www.patrickevansalon.com/keratin-vs-japanese-hair-straightening
It's interesting what you said because all the characteristics given of the japanese treatment matches with the most popular one here in Brazil. And our regulatory agency ANVISA tested all those permanent types around 2010 (including the ones that wear off and the ones that don't and including imported ones too) and ALL of them had or produced an amount of formaldehyde (is this how it's written in english?) beyond healthy. I don't know how it is nowadays, but at that time a chemical engineer was asked to coment and she said that it was impossible (yes, she used these words) to reach permanent straightening without chemicals like these and without a certain amount of it (usually not healthy). At that time I made a lot of research and then chose mine, that I use since then with no problems. But even using it for all these years I always warn people about it to be extra careful.
Rachel & Jun Totally right on all of those. Japanese permanent hair straightening should generally never be used on bleached hair and as you said, for regular coloring, ask your hairstylist. Your hairstylist should recommend a take home strengthening treatment or conditioner if you do this method and color your hair. For Brazilian keratin treatments, these are ideal for colored hair as they don't break down the disulfide bonds your stylist was talking about. There are a few of them that are highly customizable, so if you want to keep curls but lose the frizz or if you want to stretch out the curl as much as possible, you can do that. With these in particular, using a sulfate free shampoo is important. Also, color should always be done before this treatment.
so true. i have curls too and i always wanted straight hair...............and not so long ago i learned to love my curls bcz people with straight hair envied my curls. xD. thank god!
I have hair that just does whatever it wants, and honestly...it ticks me off so much. I'd probably straighten my hair permanently because it's so frizzy and curly and wavy and UGH-
I have to agree i have this weird curly wave combo that is always a hassle. Doesnt help that its thick are curls are so hard to mantain and keeping my hair hydrated. Ugh i wanna do this treatment so bad but my hair grows ridiculously fast
This was bad experience for me after 1 year my hair was damaged, not straight or curly anymore just dry and chopped ! Bad idea specially if you have to dye regularly
Panda Power they gave her a relaxer. You know, the same thing that black people get every month that we are told we are trying to look white. Yeah that treatment.
@@iGOTHATERSXZ whaha wow? Really? Did you really had to make this comment about race? 😑😂. Americans are so crazy when it comes to stuff like this (assuming you are American by your reaction) Maybe you should relax yourself 🙈

I'm so glad I was able to contribute with the subtitles! It's the first time I've translated a video, so sorry for any mistakes. I will try and make subtitles for other videos as well. :D P.S. At 3:18 there should've been "tocmai" instead of "tocami", my bad!
I was a hairdresser for decades. He is very careful, precise, safety and cleanliness-conscious. Most hairdressers are sloppy, too fast and distracted. He and his helper are really good. Trustworthy. I didn't focus on what procedure he's doing, I can tell from the first few seconds that he takes great care.
I have a question for you, would this treatment lead to bad effects on the hair in the future? Such as hair breakage, lots of split ends, etc? I have virgin long Swavy hair and I am looking into this treatment but I am scared at the same time.😬
@@brianna0153 I've never done it on a client and know nothing about it. I would be hesitant also because straight hair doesn't hide flaws. I prefer wavy hair. Keep researching and read all the reviews you can find from people who have had it done. If there's a hair school in your area they might need a model for a class. The teacher pays close attention, the student does the work. Watch this video a few times so you recognize the steps.
I wish I could get a treatment to get rid of the frizz like this but keep my wave pattern. I love my wavies I just wish they were a little sleeker and a bit less like a bird's nest.
You and me both. Im in Florida with lots of humidity. Ive been doing the curly girl method for a while now and its difficult. I have to alter some things...but honestly still not really looking good. Finding the right product is so hard but the cantu shampoo and conditioner is amazing!
@@RoseannaHughes I've tried it but it clumps my hair into about 4-5 big wavy curls so it's not a great option for me sadly. (When I gently pull those apart frizz ensues so yeah.) Thank you for the suggestion though, it's worth a try. 😊
I'm an African-Japanese (mixed) and I've been having a relaxer hair treatment since childhood. It didn't last too long and made my hair very frizzy until I came across the Japanese hair straightening! Highly recommend. It's not very damaging compared to the relaxer. 👍
The man who explained that, did so beautifully. When I asked for an explanation of how the Japanese permanent hair straightener worked, here in the U.S., I was told it’s a chemical and the process that they do along with it is what makes the hair straight. The girl that I asked also added, that it’s the same thing as the “Hawaiian straightening treatment”. So needless to say, I didn’t get either of them done, because I was scared to ruin my hair. Thanks for the video Rachel!
Yep! I've gotten it done 3 times and your hair does become silky smooth straight like in the commercials. Until your natural hair shows up from the roots and then the lies are visible 😆
i know that it is obviously possible... but i cannot understand how people have naturally straight hair. i know that sounds stupid but i’ve had curly hair my whole life and it just makes sense that hair curls up when it’s drying. idk man i couldn’t imagine having straight hair lol
I also can't understand that thingy, my hair is only straight on the roots, the bottom parts are curly, i can't imagine myself with straight hair, but my mom has naturally straight hair for the past 50 years,
@meow oh-- ty doll for telling me, i would like that, but its such a chore trying to maintain curlier or thicker hair, i'd much rather bone straight and shiny hair but im broke
@@xx-rm6uf Too bad, because I'm getting this done when I'm 18, and I never want to see another wave in my hair again. Do you not realize how much of a pain it is to have to straighten it out every single day?
Lovely Doll Time learn to love your beautifully natural hair!! And then if you ever want your hair straight straighten it once in a while. If you have wavy hair and brush it out stop doing that and maybe try the plopping method with some sort of leave in!
@@evelyn6992 That wasn't very helpful at all. And besides, my hair looks better when it's straight, and trust me, back when I had wavy hair, I literally tried everything, and it was still a pain to manage. I'm hoping heat training works in the meantime, so hopefully my waves don't bounce back at all (yes, I straighten it every morning as well). Sorry, but that's not going to fix my self loathing problem.
hahaha I tried SO HARD to sit in the same exact position. This was by far my best attempt of the three. By the third hour of the time lapse you just have no idea anymore lol

My hair is naturally so pin straight. Personally I never liked it because I feel like it has no volume, but I suppose I should appreciate it more lol. In high school girls would ask me all the time if I straightened my hair. A lot of girls spend so much time trying to get their hair straight. And I'm over here trying to get mine to have some sort of poof or crimp or curly lol >.
I changed from Hair Relaxer to the Japanese Hair Straightener, and although it takes much longer to do, I much prefer it over Hair Relaxers now. I do it myself at home & the brand of Japanese Hair Straightener I use is called: Shiseido Crystallizing Straight H1 H2 Neutralizer. While the Brand of Hair Relaxer I use to use is called: Dark and Lovely No-Lye Hair Relaxer.
blk bbw do u feel that it looks the same as hers? I have long wavy hair and I absolutely hate putting heat on my hair. I obviously cannot fly to Japan just for a hair treatment so do you think buying it and doing it on your own is just the same?
It does make the much softer than a relaxer does. I find relaxers make the hair muc more stiff and hard. You definitely don't need to fly to Japan to get it done. Though I would recommend getting your hair dresser to do if you buy the Japanese Straightener & it's your first time trying it. Because it's a little bit of a process to go though, for instants, you mustn't get in on your scalp & you have to use a 180 degree hot hair straightener/iron , etc. I buy my Japanese Hair Straightener H1 & H2 from: www.amazon.com/Shiseido-Crystallizing-Straight-Coarse-Resistant/dp/B00C1NYFKU but also check out: www.eki.com.au/shiseido-professional-products/crystallizing-straight to get the right one for your hair type if you don't have afro-American hair as H1 might be too strong for your hair?
blk bbw I have European background so my hair fine but I have a ton of it. I've also thought of doing an Olaplex treatment but it's so expensive. The straightening treatment seems to be up my alley. Thank you!
Ah! Then definitely don't get H1 & H2. For your hair type you will need Shiseido Crystallizing Straight N1 & N2 Neutralizer: www.amazon.com/Shiseido-Crystallizing-Straight-Tinted-piece/dp/B00C1NST7U And that's ok, you're very welcome! :-3
XD I also did straightening and man it looks weird when your old locks grow back you you have to straighten em back or it would just be curly at the bottom and straight at the top .
i live in NYC and i did the permanent hair straigtening at a salon on 32nd street in a Korean hair salon and it is LITERALLY the best $250 i've ever spent. i have super curly hair that gets so frizzy if a drop of water touches it. I can shower and just let it air dry and it's pin straight. bad weather humidity is literally nothign to me. sweating at the gym? dont have to worry about it anymore. so glad i spent the money. well worth it.
lindsaythekitty I heard they raised their prices tho to like 300. but also the price depends on your length of hair too. I had hair past my shoulder by like 6 inches and it was 250. when I went there there was like 6 other girls getting the same treatment. this was in summer time and the stylist told me a lot of people were getting it for summer time
Is this the hair straightening where you can't tie/pin up your hair for a couple of hours after the treatment? Or is ready to go? These crowded nyc trains always have me putting my hair into a bun. >.
Oh my gosh You touched your wet hair so much in the intro to the time lapse and then you said you slept with wet hair and THEN you used a fan! If I did all that with my curly hair it wouldnt be curly anymore it would just be all frizz !
Rachel! My husband and I are traveling to Japan in January! We live in LA and want to experience a true white winter land! hehe All jokes aside, we are visiting his family and friends and he absolutely loves your videos! He's 49 y/o and I'm 25 he's been several times but always likes learning about new prefectures and we love you and Jun! This will be my first time traveling Japan. Just wanted to say we love your channel and thank you!!!♡
haha oh man, well hopefully it'll be snowing then!! Apparently Tokyo already got snow this month (first time in 54 years?) so chances might be good you could get some snow while you're here. You guys will have a ton of fun, I'm sure! Make sure to bundle up if you're not driving because walking around everywhere in the snow gets pretty cold! lol And thank you so much!! :D
UPDATE: I wanted to tell you about my experience. I am back from vacation and I think about Japan every single day♡ We stayed 14 days in January and we went everywhere from Koga up to Kyoto. He sure showed me around (everywhere touristy with my fav being Puroland)! Anyway, we plan on going back next winter. I simply cannot get enough!♡
@@lovelydolltime8006 But then it's just a vicious cycle of straightening, having damaged hair and straightening to make hair look healthier and just leaves your hair destroyed after a period of time.
I'm guessing this hair salon likes Fairy Tail Edit: I was actually going to do this treatment but I found out it was for virgin hair ;-; My hair has too much pink, and will fall out within seconds.
Wow, what a difference! I wish they could do this but then not straighten it afterwards...kinda like keeping away frizz but maintaining a natural wave. I have frizzy hair but it makes me look kinda weird when I straighten it!
@@animalworld4901 chemicals can be too harsh if over used. or sometimes due to the strength it destroys curl patterns and your curl never comes back till you cut and regrow the hair
I've had it done before. When considering it, you need to make sure you deal with a specialist that uses the genuine Japanese products and technics. People have been confusing the Japanese perm with the Brazilian blow out and the smoothing keratin treatments, which do not give that kind of results. My Japanese perm (done in Calgary) cost about $400 and it took about 6 hours. I was not allowed to wash my hair for 3 days afterwards. My hair was absolutely silky and straight for about 4 months. I had hair loss following the treatment - not enough to show but it made me reconsider having the perm done again.
Wow so beautiful!! Can you imagine just waking up.... AND HAVING PERFECT STRAIGHT HAIR? sounds too good to be true! Four questions.... Is it always soft after you wash and condition it? Or does it start to get worse and less soft more and more after a while? Can you still curl it? Or does it mess with the straighting effect? If Rachel doesn't answer... Can someone in the comments help, if any of you got this treatment done.
Flapjacks it stays like that for a long time but varies upon the person ranging from 1 year to 4 years slowly the hair goes back to how it originally was I never tried curling so idkk ps: the hair u grow out after straightening will be like ur original hair
K A W A W A aaand if you tie it up in the morning and let it down at night (after work or something) does it still stay straight and you don’t have that one big wave from the tie? 🤔🤔
The part that is straightened stays like that, but the ends might eventually get a bit dry or split like normal hair would (not necessarily due to the straightening, it's just normal unless you trim the ends regularly), it's nicest and most silky when it's first done, but stays pretty much straight, smooth and very manageable permanently, but the new hair that grows out from the top later will obviously be the same texture as your hair was originally, and as you get your hair trimmed over time you gradually lose the straightened part. when I got it done I would keep my hair length for as long as possible, and the straightened ends combined with the weight of the hair would keep my hair manageable and relatively straight for at least more than a year. It was approximately 2 years when my hair grew out to the extent that my original frizz was all back and I felt a need to tie it up or re-do the straightening.
With mine, if I tied it up for a long time, I might get a gentle curve, but the hair would tend to stay as straight as possible, and I didn't get a big wave or deep crease where the hair tie was.
That it so clever I had no idea that was even possible. It would be interesting to see humidity has any effect once the hair is treated, if not then this is a bloody miracle!
When I was a teenager as an Asian this super straight hair like falling rain was very popular that I wanted so badly. Until I met a professional, since then I embraced my wavy hair and frizzy hair. With proper treatment my hair is beautiful the way it is, and people just can't stop admiring it. You are beautiful the way you are.
Ooh girl you’re GORGEOUS and your beautiful, long red hair just made me genuinely miss my long hair for the first time. Go redheads! Love the permanent hair straightening on you, considering it now bc of your awesome, informative video!
Hey Rachel, I loved this video!! So much so that after watching it I did go to nalu and request the same thing that you received.... however, I did have some issues. As a representative of theirs (formal or informal as a customer, I'm not sure) I wanted to share my experience with you in the hopes that the same thing won't happen to other customers (maybe you could please speak to them next time you're in the salon? :) ). So I went to the salon, told them I wanted to cut my hair into a lob and that I watched your video on permanent hair straightening and that I wanted the rebonding (then I went onto their website & pointed at "rebonding" in Japanese. I then had my japanese husband make sure we were all on the same page and let them know that I wanted straight hair & I wanted the ends to flick inwards if possible (like the photos I gave them). However, the hairdresser kept insisting that she would do 'natural straight' even though I kept repeating that I wanted rebonding (my hair is undied, it just gets frizzy and has a very light wave through it - so there should be no problems). but she kept saying no, no, i'll just put some stronger chemical in the 'natural straight'. Eventually we just said ok. Then... you know the part where they straighten your hair with the no-heat... well she was using an iron with heat... So I was like ooo noooo, this doesn't seem right! Then at the end, she blow dried my hair and the ends of my hair were all flicking out in different directions - on the left side they went inwards, on the right side and back outwards, like my natural hair swirl/flick but super strong! I pointed this out to the girl but she just said that the flicky style is 'very in right now' and if I style it differently with my hairdryer it would change the outcome. So I went home and checked... not the case. I went back 2 days later to get it fixed, and she said that if she cut a few inches off it should turn out straight and I would be able to style it the way I wanted... So she cut it and tried styling it again with heat, however she couldn't get the ends of my hair to not flick out in weird ways again. I think that she basically made my hair more hard with the pem, and whilst I did achieve the silky results, it also hardened the natural kinks in my hair... So now it's impossible to style without ironing my hair ayer by layer (and even still, it sometimes returns to its kinky ways whilst im out and about). Anyway, after she definitely noticed she couldn't style it the way I'd asked, she just awkwardly (but sweetly) smiled and thanked us, saying that's all she had time for today because they were fully booked. So yeah, I was just really bummed having spent all that money to have my hair semi-permanently(?) infused with kinks... Whilst I don't blame you at all, I was wondering if you could please speak to the someone working there so that when people ask for the straight perm/rebonding featured in this video they get what they ask for. (Because I know so many girls will be/are going to the salon after watching your video! (: ) On a positive note - even if she just didn't do what I had asked, the hair stylist was super sweet. lol! ^^^^ Hope this comment isn't too much of a bummer!
The amount of flashbacks I got from reading this comment lol. I hate when hairdressers try to insist their own style, it always happens to me. I would cut and style my own hair if I could but I have -16 vision so I have no depth perception :c For anybody else that reads: Don't let your hairdresser change your mind about what you want. You'll end up disappointed in the end. I know it's hard to argue because it's their profession, but it's *your* hair. (ofc there are those cases where the intended style is impossible because of your type of hair or their skill level, but stay adamant unless that is made clear)
ChasingDreams I'm often a victim of this. Many times I wanted to crop my hair, like tomboy short. So I go to the usual salon and ask for it but the hairdresser always insists, "No! It's such a waste! I'll cut it shoulder length!" or "Your face is chubby! It won't look nice in short hair, NO!" Because they always insist, I didn't get to cut my hair the way I want it. I love long hair but I'm too lazy to care for it. I get frequent headaches so I dreamed of just cropping my hair short. I even thought of just snipping it off super short myself and going to the salon to have it evened out so the hairdressers can't argue with me.
Mai U. Do it! Or go to another salon. I promise you'll feel so free once you finally get it cut *the way you want* because that's what happened to me all the time too. I don't understand the "It's such a waste" comments. Hair grows out. It made me feel like my long hair was for the pleasure of others and when I finally got it cut I was living for myself.
As a person of being black of course like you said in the comments it’s called a relaxed full of chemicals and your hair is literally straight, I am no longer doin relaxers, I am an all natural Jamaican lol😂 my hair is puffy and curly. But with those relaxers you will have to get them done or your hair will fall out. Like it’s bad and must take CARE OF IT!
Lol that's what it is?? A damn relaxer?? Smh...I thought it was something innovative. Boyyy if you white, ask your black friend to do it for you, she'll or he'll do it for free and itll cost you but 7 dollars or less
Vitu Vidogo nah I’m black and I used to have a relaxer in my hair, now I’m all natural with my Afro kinky hair, were my hair is much fuller and not thin 😌
i Granot the thing is, most people with curly hair can straighten it, and most people with straight hair can curl theirs (temporarily or more permanent), unless you have thick long hair like i do, where curling irons, curlers and even perms won't do anything. it would be nice to have more versatile hair but I'm definitely not going to cut mine shorter and thin it out to get curls
I have curly hair and I wouldn't want it any other way. I haven't straightened it in years because I like it the way it is. Easy to maintain and more good hair days than bad. I do like straight hair, though. It looks good on other people, just not me. lol
its understandable. they have been seeing the same kind of hairstyle every morning when they look on themselves in the mirror. Another thing is that people with round face suits better with straight or boxy style hair and those faces with sharp angles (non-rounded) usually suits better with curvy, rounded hairstyle. (Opposites attract kind of thing) Annd she has a rounded face so a straight hair is imo makes her look more attractive.
You guys are so lucky and blessed. You have good looks good partners, good environment, great country, cute cats and popular youtube channel. May god bless you. Love your all channels. I'll pray they will grow soon. And one more important thing to say plz adopt😿 me 😂😂
I got this done so many times as a young teen in Vietnam. Even with 3 ladies working on your hair, I hated how long it took. 5 hours was the fastest I was even out of a salon for that treatment. Watching your video made my butt hurt. I remember the pain my butt would be in from sitting in that seat for so long. 🙈
I was wondering if it was useful/necessary on already straight hair, if you saw a difference or something :3 ? (I'm assuming here that you're Asian and that there's a high probability that you thus have straight hair, but I could be wrong) ^-^
There is a difference between straight and VERY straight. Rachel in the video started out with pretty straight hair to start. (That level of curl doesn't even qualify as wavy) My hair is about that "curly" too - but I wear it up on frizz days so a straitening perm doesn't interest me.
Jade Gardais my hair is actually very thick and wavy because I am half white. I found after a few treatments of this process regardless if you get an oil treatment that your hair will get damaged. Its such a long process that i much rather straighten my hair every day than sit through such a long and brutal process. My hair is long like Rachels (up to my butt). It is so thick that it takes 30 mins to straighten though.
Jade Gardais my mom is vietnamese and she has pin straight hair and she gets the treatment done. There is no difference before and after since her hair is so straight. My advice is don't do it if you have pretty straight hair because It will damage it.
Thank you for your reply :3 I was wondering, as I'm from Vietnamese origin (well, 100% Vietnamese but adopted so 100% French as well ^^) so wondered if it was worth the cost/time. Aaah to think that in Asia (Eastern-North like China, Korea and Japan but also Thailand and Singapore for instance) they get perms all the time to get wavy/lighter hair ... Do you have any advice on a natural method to get back darker jet black hair ? Mine's turning browner with the sun and sea and time :
Goodness .. the color of your hair is absolutely beautiful .. like, I want to just scream!! Literally perfect! I'm a quarter Japanese, my husband is 100% red headed, blue eyed American man .. so, our son ... ?? Well, He's the cutest little red headed, blue eyed Japanese child ever, lol. 😁😁 He very much took after me with the shape of his eyes and skin tone, but took after his father with the blue eyes and red hair 😊
Rachel & Jun .. Aw, we for sure thought that my Asian genes would dominate but he came out with brightest, most beautiful reddish orangey toned hair ever and TONS of it! His hair & skin tone was such a hit with the nurses at the hospital when he was born. I have no doubt that you guys would make the most gorgeous little babes evvvver! Love you guys! Love this channel! 👌🏼🙌🏼
I done it ! I was in Japan in april, and I went to this saloon ! My hair are so straight and silky now ! ❤ The people were so nice ! And I say I come to this saloon because I see this video and they thanks me ! Like, THANK YOU to make my hair straight 😂
I too have done the Japanese Permanent Hair Straightening here in the United States (Oklahoma to be exact) but it was considerably more. It is simply life changing for a girl with naturally curly, frizzy hair!
Ione Shaver Hey! I live in Oklahoma as well! I wanted to get in done myself, but didn't think there was any facilities that did this treatment. Where did you go to get it done?
Ione Shaver Hey there. Where did you have this service performed? How much did it cost? What type of hair do you have naturally? An answer would be greatly appreciated. 💗
My hair has it's own mood: If it's cold: damn straight If it's hot: wavy and sticky(and dry) If it's raining: expect a ton of friz(and dry) If it's normal normal:expect a lot of friz but straight... Bruh, just choose one please and I'll just deal with it.
Wow that salon is such a gem!!! I wanna go to Japan and have them do this to my waist length hair... I don't normally go to salons due to the fear that some stylist damage my hair like one did before... Breakage really is an issue for me especially if the one handling my hair isn't gentle.
Straight hair is not "ugly". No kind of hair is "ugly". Please grow up instead of just wasting your life calling people ugly on the internet, thank you very much.
I'm definitely not an expert, but I found a couple links on it! bellatory.com/hair/Hair-Relaxing-Versus-Hair-Rebonding-Which-Is-Better www.bellemocha.com/2013/08/japanese-straightening-healthier.html
its a perm for their hair , because when they use regular perm like we do or course hair in general, it makes their hair curly , so they require a diff process
Adrophine well no, I know they have "perms". I mean like an anti-frizz/smoothing treatment. My hair is super curly but, humidity and past damage make if poofy
like permanent straightening when you gave curly hair? If so, yep! My hair was super curly and got it done. Now I do it myself since I know what to do for it.
Rachel & Jun the last time I asked you guys said TH-cam wasn't a confirmed job for you, and that you were on the lookout for more stables jobs since TH-cam is so unpredictable. Does this mean you're full time youtuber now?
Can I just say.... This video changed my life lol. I got this done soon after watching this video and a couple of times since and I've never been happier with my hair.
*Japanese permanent straightening (aka rebonding) vs Brazilian keratin treatments vs relaxers*
There are a crazy number of comments and quite a bit of confusion about the different methods of hair straightening, so I did a bunch of research to compare the main methods people are mentioning! Hopefully this should answer like 90% of the questions here!! haha
*Japanese permanent straightening aka rebonding aka thermal reconditioning*
-Created in Japan by Yuko Yamashita, patented in 1995
-Permanent (new growth is not affected)
-Uses chemicals to break disulphide bonds in hair, a flat iron to straight the hair (setting it into place), and then chemicals again to re-set the bonds
-New hair that grows out will be natural, so if you don't get that treated as well you can have a strange divide between straight and curly hair
-Can't generally be used on already treated hair (hair that has been dyed a lot, etc)
*Brazilian keratin treatment aka Brazilian blowout*
-Created in Brazil by Mauricio Ribeiro, brought to US in 2007
-Said to last 3 months on average (eventually washes out)
-Coats hair strands in keratin treatment to reduce frizz, not generally strong enough to perfectly straighten curly hair
-This is the treatment that uses formaldehyde (some types don't, but those supposedly wear off much quicker since the formaldehyde is what's used to bond the keratin to the hair)
-Can be used on dyed hair
*Relaxers*
-Created in USA, 1905 by Garrett Morgan
-Said to last 6 - 8 weeks (oops! I was informed this timeframe is for the time you can last before needing to touch up new hair growth, and that the actual relaxer is permanent)
-There are several types, but they use chemicals of a higher pH than Japanese straightening to break down the disulphide bonds, relaxing tight curls. The bonds are not rebonded afterward like they are in Japanese straightening.
-Some types have strong chemicals that can burn the scalp

lol you guys are really kind to your viewers
Mariana de Oliveira Saitu there are (now) some treatments that are free of formaldehyde

I'm an African-Japanese (mixed) and I've been having a relaxer hair treatment since childhood. It didn't last too long and made my hair very frizzy until I came across the Japanese hair straightening! Highly recommend. It's not very damaging compared to the relaxer. 👍

+SpaceGirl
Permanently.
Straightened.
Apparently, you still can. A person below in the comment section confirmed this. Your curls just goes back to normal after you bathe.
Cool combination
Really??? Is there anyone in America who knows this procedure?
The man who explained that, did so beautifully. When I asked for an explanation of how the Japanese permanent hair straightener worked, here in the U.S., I was told it’s a chemical and the process that they do along with it is what makes the hair straight. The girl that I asked also added, that it’s the same thing as the “Hawaiian straightening treatment”. So needless to say, I didn’t get either of them done, because I was scared to ruin my hair. Thanks for the video Rachel!
perm is actually very high technique, if they don't know what they are doing, don't do it! they may burn your hair.

blk bbw do u feel that it looks the same as hers?

Can someone in the comments help, if any of you got this treatment done.

it stays like that for a long time but varies upon the person ranging from 1 year to 4 years
slowly the hair goes back to how it originally was
I never tried curling so idkk
ps: the hair u grow out after straightening will be like ur original hair
K A W A W A aaand if you tie it up in the morning and let it down at night (after work or something) does it still stay straight and you don’t have that one big wave from the tie? 🤔🤔
Does anyone know if your hair falls out since you put in a lot of chemicals?? I really wanna try it but I have a ton of questions too
The part that is straightened stays like that, but the ends might eventually get a bit dry or split like normal hair would (not necessarily due to the straightening, it's just normal unless you trim the ends regularly), it's nicest and most silky when it's first done, but stays pretty much straight, smooth and very manageable permanently, but the new hair that grows out from the top later will obviously be the same texture as your hair was originally, and as you get your hair trimmed over time you gradually lose the straightened part. when I got it done I would keep my hair length for as long as possible, and the straightened ends combined with the weight of the hair would keep my hair manageable and relatively straight for at least more than a year. It was approximately 2 years when my hair grew out to the extent that my original frizz was all back and I felt a need to tie it up or re-do the straightening.
With mine, if I tied it up for a long time, I might get a gentle curve, but the hair would tend to stay as straight as possible, and I didn't get a big wave or deep crease where the hair tie was.
one of thousand reasons why to go to japan haha

Love the permanent hair straightening on you, considering it now bc of your awesome, informative video!
Hey Rachel,
I loved this video!!
On a positive note - even if she just didn't do what I had asked, the hair stylist was super sweet. lol!
^^^^ Hope this comment isn't too much of a bummer!
+Emily Joy Noooo I'm so upset that happened to you!! D:> I will for sure talk to them about it!
Thank you
The amount of flashbacks I got from reading this comment lol. I hate when hairdressers try to insist their own style, it always happens to me. I would cut and style my own hair if I could but I have -16 vision so I have no depth perception :c
For anybody else that reads: Don't let your hairdresser change your mind about what you want.
It won't look nice in short hair, NO!"
Because they always insist, I didn't get to cut my hair the way I want it.
So THAT’S how they have such perfect hair all the time.
They also probs just have killer genetics...
Now Rachel is like an actual anime character
*their hair is so perfect*
As a person of being black of course like you said in the comments it’s called a relaxed full of chemicals and your hair is literally straight, I am no longer doin relaxers, I am an all natural Jamaican lol😂 my hair is puffy and curly. But with those relaxers you will have to get them done or your hair will fall out. Like it’s bad and must take CARE OF IT!
Well said, it takes maintenance otherwise it will break!
This isn’t a relaxer, it’s more similar to a Brazilian blowout.
Girrrrl i thought I was the only person who thought she was just getting a relaxer...chile please Japanese hair straightener my ass😂
People with curly hair want straight hair and people with straight hair want curly hair. Makes sense.
i Granot
It's easy to want what you don't have, instead of appreciating what you do have. It's human nature I guess.
i Granot the thing is, most people with curly hair can straighten it, and most people with straight hair can curl theirs (temporarily or more permanent), unless you have thick long hair like i do, where curling irons, curlers and even perms won't do anything.
it would be nice to have more versatile hair but I'm definitely not going to cut mine shorter and thin it out to get curls
don't think anyone wants frizzy tho
I have curly hair and I wouldn't want it any other way. I haven't straightened it in years because I like it the way it is. Easy to maintain and more good hair days than bad. I do like straight hair, though. It looks good on other people, just not me. lol
its understandable. they have been seeing the same kind of hairstyle every morning when they look on themselves in the mirror.
Another thing is that people with round face suits better with straight or boxy style hair and those faces with sharp angles (non-rounded) usually suits better with curvy, rounded hairstyle. (Opposites attract kind of thing)
Annd she has a rounded face so a straight hair is imo makes her look more attractive.

Thank you for your reply :3
I was wondering, as I'm from Vietnamese origin (well, 100% Vietnamese but adopted so 100% French as well ^^) so wondered if it was worth the cost/time.
He very much took after me with the shape of his eyes and skin tone, but took after his father with the blue eyes and red hair 😊
Awww that's so great!! Jun is dead set on having a redheaded little girl but I've been trying to tell him it's pretty much impossible lol.
Hi you're really pretty
Mom's hair: straight
Dad's hair: straight
Sister's hair: straight
My hair: frizzy curly train wreck
...
Wtf
think your mom has something to explain 👀
Lol I have the opposite problem...
Mum: think curly hair
dad: thick curly hair
Sis: thick curly hair
bro: thick curly hair
Me: straight thin uncooked spaghetti hair
Were you adopted
@@who_againn no. My uncle danny has hair similar to mine... kinda makes me wonder, though.... i look more like my uncle than my dad...
Pumpkin Momma
Kinda suspicious... I think your mom has some explaining to do haha
I done it ! I was in Japan in april, and I went to this saloon ! My hair are so straight and silky now ! ❤ The people were so nice ! And I say I come to this saloon because I see this video and they thanks me ! Like, THANK YOU to make my hair straight 😂
how does it look now?
I too have done the Japanese Permanent Hair Straightening here in the United States (Oklahoma to be exact) but it was considerably more. It is simply life changing for a girl with naturally curly, frizzy hair!
Ione Shaver Hey! I live in Oklahoma as well! I wanted to get in done myself, but didn't think there was any facilities that did this treatment. Where did you go to get it done?
Ione Shaver Hey there. Where did you have this service performed? How much did it cost? What type of hair do you have naturally? An answer would be greatly appreciated. 💗
My hair has it's own mood:
If it's cold: damn straight
If it's hot: wavy and sticky(and dry)
If it's raining: expect a ton of friz(and dry)
If it's normal normal:expect a lot of friz but straight...
Bruh, just choose one please and I'll just deal with it.
Try deep conditioning it there are a couple of different methods but it works against frizz but doesn't do anything to waves or curls
Same with my daughter's hair.
If I had hair like that, I'd always be standing in front of wind machines, just lookin' fab!
Aww just like me :D
Wow that salon is such a gem!!! I wanna go to Japan and have them do this to my waist length hair... I don't normally go to salons due to the fear that some stylist damage my hair like one did before... Breakage really is an issue for me especially if the one handling my hair isn't gentle.
Please read their pinned comment and watch the video carefully.
Wyt
This is so amazing!!! I wish more salons did this in the us. Your hair is so beautiful and long.
I feel like this video made me appreciate my curly hair cause that was so much work
I really want that!! My mum is a hairdresser and she could do it to my hair and I don't have to pay!! Free permanent straight hair!
Can I borrow your mom for a quick second? 😂
Straight hair is not "ugly".
No kind of hair is "ugly".
Please grow up instead of just wasting your life calling people ugly on the internet, thank you very much.
Your mum would have to have some expereince with the procedure since its easy for mistakes to occur
@Anthony Rodriguez jealous much
@Anthony Rodriguez don't most hair styles just hang down (even her hair before the straightening)
It's a very common treatment in the Philippines. We call it hair rebonding treatment. Your hair looks great. It does stay for a year or so.
Is it hair relaxer
This sounds like heaven. I need to save money and fix the mess I call hair.
これからストパーされる方や、最近ストパーしたよ!って方(縮毛矯正もです)は髪を洗った後はしっかり髪を乾かした方が長持ちちます。

i was searching for this comment
I need that so bad my hair is so fluffy this is why Asians have the worlds best hair I wish they had this treatment in the uk
asian here but *cough* *cough* can't relate *cough* *cough*
Come oon! Asians are having a genetically great hairs, dear girl. It is not from CHRMICAL treatment.
I do this at home using cocochoco ^-^ I have very curly hair, but now I keep it short and straight. Lasts for 4-6 months. Love it!
it was kinda funny how they just covered her face with the paper lol
umakemebarf I actually prefer if they did that to me, usually they don't and water/shampoo sprays into your eyes as they wash/rinse.
umakemebarf it also keeps the person from having harsh light in their face, making it easier to relax and enjoy yourself 😊
Holy mother of Jesus I need to do this!!! I NEVER heard of *permanent* hair straightening, so thank you for making a video about it 🙏🙏
I'm curious as to how this is different from a relaxer?
I'm definitely not an expert, but I found a couple links on it!
bellatory.com/hair/Hair-Relaxing-Versus-Hair-Rebonding-Which-Is-Better
www.bellemocha.com/2013/08/japanese-straightening-healthier.html
thanks! i'll check these out :)
This is a relaxer.
its a perm for their hair , because when they use regular perm like we do or course hair in general, it makes their hair curly , so they require a diff process
WhatTheChell relaxers don't make your hair silky smooth and damages it way more than this
Great results..quite expensive though, but her hair color is gorgeous!!!
It's not that expensive, in the US it tends to cost $300+
When you have frizzy, unmanageable hair, it is worth every cent.
wow...natsu and Lucy mad a hair salon...
made*
lucy heartfilia the same thing I was thinking XD
+Lana “Lana” W. loll

@@anastasia-vn5oc 😂
綺麗な赤毛ですね~😻✨
Do they have the equivalent for curly hair? Lol I like my curls but sometimes they are just too unmanageable
Do you mean a permanent curl treatment? I think there is!
Adrophine well no, I know they have "perms". I mean like an anti-frizz/smoothing treatment. My hair is super curly but, humidity and past damage make if poofy
that's what this is for....
I think you misunderstood the video and the treatment...
like permanent straightening when you gave curly hair? If so, yep! My hair was super curly and got it done. Now I do it myself since I know what to do for it.
miranda725 what do you use? I have very curly hair and I love it straight.
your hair is lovely and that salon was amazing!
i love all your videos and you two are one of my favorite youtube couples.
please don't leave me like grace and ryosuke 😟
haha don't worry, we're in it for the long haul!
Rachel & Jun the last time I asked you guys said TH-cam wasn't a confirmed job for you, and that you were on the lookout for more stables jobs since TH-cam is so unpredictable. Does this mean you're full time youtuber now?
Ah, thank god! I was LITERALLY thinking that as I watched their last video )':
アウトバストリートメントとドライヤーはあった方がいいと思います
