Back in the early 90’s I worked in a gun store in Tucson. A man had a 45-70 derringer special made to use as a defensive weapon. He took it to a local indoor shooting range to test fire. Long story short when he shot the derringer it flew out of his hand hitting the glass behind him causing it to shatter. He sold it.
Yeah, I just don't see this type of gun (in this caliber) being practical. You have lots of power,,,,,,,,,,,for ONE shot,,,,,,,,,,,,,and it's the size of sub-compact semi-auto pistol that can shoot at least 10x more bullets before needing to be reloaded (which can also be done waaaaaaaaaay faster).
@@HalfBreedMixmaybe if you’re in bear country and it’s your third or 4th gun. Last resort when the bears ontop of you you can pull it out and put a nice hole in them. But yeah you probably aren’t burning all the powder. Or getting the energy of say a 10mm but idk I haven’t finished the video.
Even 45 colt is too much for a derringer, and it’s ya know, not even a rifle round (let alone one as hard hitting as 45-70)

@@mephInc the worst thing is the Price. but that Price is warranted, as they are all Hand Milled and Hand Crafted Weapons. i've got 8 of their guns in my home, and i am nothing but impressed with the quality. only had one accident with a single gun i got, but that was noones fault but the one that borrowed the gun from me.

After almost each video it looks clean and sorted out and I like that he actually put effort into a clean range.

I have the Bond Arms Rowdy in 45 Colt/.410. I carry it as a back up to my S&W M66 .357.
I think you can buy just the barrel if you already have on I've been add barrels to mine as the come out

Cyclops has a trigger guard... therefore alot easier to handle. Even a .22 magnum without a trigger guard will dance in your hand. Nice demonstration with the slow motion camera. Thanks 👍
not to mention i want a trigger guard.i made one mistake with my 9mm that had a trigger guard and blew front pocket of my new jacket to shreds ,put a hole in my bedroom floor and living room floor.i need trigger guards.
Scott I watched this video some time ago as my first introduction to the Cyclops. I have been a 45-70 fanatic for the last 45 plus years since shooting my Dad's old H&R Shikari back in the 70's. Thanks to you and Bond Arms I haven't been able to get the Cyclops out of my head since watching your video. I finally gave in and ordered mine today and look forward to adding it to the 45-70 collection. I understand that the Hornady Subsonic ammo is perhaps the most comfortable shooting 45-70 option available for this gem and can't wait to try it out!

I used to own the Thompson / single shot 45-70...its a fun beast to practice with....popping watermelons and barrels of water out doors is so great

I guess when it comes to holding on to a recoiling gun, having an actual trigger guard matters, since in the slo-mo we can clearly see that, for the most part, it was the guard catching on your finger what stopped the gun from flying as much as the first one...

@@datadavis He certainly does it better than I do. .44 Mag has never bothered me very much, but as the man said in that movie, "A man's got to know his limitations." .44 Magnum is mine. Biggest handgun round I find pleasant to shoot. My max bench press is about 100# shy of Scott's, and I could easily imagine one of those derringers driving its hammer back into the web of my hand hard enough to tear it.

Surprisingly even at slower speeds the cyclops seems to do more damage on the gel block
I'm guessing it was starting to tumble as it penetrated more than the rifle one. Which makes it going all the way through all the more impressive!

I have a little S&W 360PD, chambered for 357M. It weighs about 12 ounces. I thought firing that thing was brutal, but I couldn’t even imagine 45/70 through a derringer. 😳
I have that same gun but with the hidden concealed hammer version. (340PD). Better to have 5 shots vs 1. I have a BondArms .410 as well.
I have the Alaskan and it's a blast but extremely brutal on your wrist.

I used to own a construction company, and I have a 16 pound sledgehammer I use to punish employees for whatever reason, 8 hrs of demo swinging that beast will put anyone back on track, 20 pounds is ridiculous. A lever action 45/70 is my dream rifle, can't imagine that round in a pistol of any kind. Great video once again Scott.
The bullet leaves the barrel at HALF the rifle velocity, thus the recoil energy is like 5-7 times less.
