Thank you for this audio! I'm terrible at staying focused, so I like to find an audiobook to listen to as I read the text; this is a wonderful reading.
To sum this story up for those who don't understand: In the weird town, there is an old guy who every year has this event that no one knows the true purpose of, yet they still continue to do it anyway without question. Exception: The MC Tessie who speaks up against it when I think her dad or husband whatever it was a male in her family wins, but apparently that is a bad thing. They start over again, and she ends up winning. Turns out that it was a bad thing to win this lottery because the prize is getting pelted. She gets pelted. The End.
Don't really get all the talk about how, "Oh, the ending will really surprise you, its a great read!" The ending was so foreseeable even a blind person could see it coming from a mile away.
Probably because everyone knows about "stonings" now, but it was less obvious in decades past. I had the misfortune of reading a GoodReads review, which accompanied the review with a picture of someone being stoned by a crowd... Ruining what I probably would have figured out fine by myself.
I knew nothing about the plot twist and when Tessie started freaking out when her family getting picked I was confused, then at the end when she’s picked and everyone grabbed the rocks I realized in absolute horror what was happening. Maybe I’m naive but as someone who went into this story completely blind, only knowing it was a horror short story, I was absolutely shocked by the twist
It also reminded me of the Hunger Games so I was already on-guard and that made the imagery of people tensely waiting easy to spot. That's the tragedy of when amazing plots turn into predictable tropes through the plethora of ensuing homages.
As the other person said it's all about symbolism, Mr GRAVES, a black chipped box sitting in a 3 legged unstable stool, ms Hutchinson, Mr Warner, them doing the Lottery on the summer solstice to pick a sacrifice to have good harvests come summer, Mr summers being the person starting the new lottery and summer being the start of a new time
I just think it was poorly written. The story make sense well enough. It just ends without any conclusion or meaning. One of those lazy “come up with your own moral of the story.” Kinda BS. It’s as if the author had no idea how it should actually end, but left it as open ended because they had nothing better. I’d much rather spend time reading stories that are finished.
@@rainedits As I read through the comments, you were only one of many reporting difficulty reading and retention. I'm not talking about you especially, I feel after seeing so many people also reporting that similar inability, is something I've not seen before. I truly believe that people 30 and younger have been exposed to way too many Vaccines. I've heard that babies now get 72 vaccines...I find that obscene.
@@angelab4652 Dude what? Have you ever heard of a learning disability or just retention problems? This has nothing to do with vaccines.. I was diagnosed with dyslexia way before my first vaccine. thank you but that's a really messed up ending lol
I dont think you understood this story very well
No sweetie that’s not what happens

They don’t start over, they drew names of heads of households then drew another paper to pick a family member.
Don't really get all the talk about how, "Oh, the ending will really surprise you, its a great read!" The ending was so foreseeable even a blind person could see it coming from a mile away.

Ikr it is so hard to read such a long story, it would have taken me like 1 hour to read and I would still not fully understand that story lol.
It's like an early "Hunger Games." I remember reading this in either middle or high school.
Thank you!!! You saved me from having to read this multiple times aloud to my classes.
this story is very hard to understand i have read it 100 times and still have no idea whats going on
Directly from my professor “this entire story is a figure of speech- symbolic. The story doesn’t make sense on a literal level”

The story is all around not that good. I get the message it's trying to convey, but aspects such as wordplay and storytelling are very lackluster.
