Glad I stayed with my tough AUS8 steel and never brought out my knife in this overpriced CPM3V steel that is brittle as hell as you demonstrated. Great video as always.

90% of my CS collection is aus10 and I am more than satisfied with that. I bought their warcraft large and ak-47 field knife in way over priced 3v. Love those knives but I'm more confident and far less paranoid using and maintaining 10a

Sorry, but there is NO WAY AUS8(A) steel comes close to CPM-3V in terms of toughness when hardened to the same HRC. Of course you can harden AUS8(A) to lower HRCs (< 58) for added toughness, but this will result in bad edge retention and much easier deformation of the edge/blade. CPM-3V is literally the toughest stuff you can get on a production knife that will still have some decent edge retention thanks to the added vanadium.
Please keep in mind that longer blades will always suffer from much higher stress levels due to leverage effects compared to shorter blades. Going for a lower HRC might have been a much better choice for this particular knife, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with using CPM-3V here, it will do a much better job in this context than AUS-8(A) could have done.
Apart from that, CS has been putting out lots of overpriced crap with horrible quality control lately :(

Hitting a knife edge at a concrete block continuously will cause damage to any knife of any made and any steel. However, this knife will serve very well for its intended purpose of slicing and slashing at your enemies two legged or four legged. I have a few folders made with CPM 3V steel and they hold a razor sharp edge very well.

Thanks for finally testing out cold steel 3v, it broke earlier than I expected, I heard cold steel run their magnum tanto at 61-62HRC (3v should be at 58HRC for maximum toughness) which would make the steel more brittle. Anyway this is the first time I able to see the tang under the magnum tanto, also thanks for burning your money on this expensive knife just for our curiosity. Now I know if I want something indestructible I would just stick to spring steel like 5160, or just any low alloy steel.

Hi Jò, I had read an article on steel, which said that when steel is subjected to sudden changes in temperature or vibrations, its structure changes. Basically when you give it all those blows and then you stop for 5 - 10 seconds the structure tends to relax and return to its original structure, at that moment you have to wait a bit because at that moment the steel is very fragile, I discovered from your videos that maybe this thing is true, have you noticed that they often break when you stop and then resume? @@forestmantis1737 knivesandtools states 60 HRC, but they may (both) be wrong. A well tempered CPM-3V blade should not behave that way since this stuff is chemically designed to be extremely tough. Apart from that, the Magnum tanto has a rather slim and long blade, making for much higher stress-levels due to leverage. Interesting fact: The CS Recon Tanto in SK5 has comparable blade geometry and it broke just as easily despite its shorter blade:

Most knives I've seen you break and other individuals break typically will survive the edge impacts but break during the spine impact portion. So do you think its worse for a knife to break during an edge impact test. Does that mean the steel is weaker than a steel that breaks during a spine impact test?

Production processes for these kinds of steels are highly standardized and will only allow for extremely low variation in chemical composition and grain structure. Fucking up the heat treat is much easier and therefore more likely here. Maybe they didn't even fuck it up but decided to go > 60 HRC which in combination with this long and slender blade resulted in failure. The Recon Tanto in SK5 has comparable blade geometry but a shorter blade (therefore less leverage and stress) and it broke just as easy:

    • @robinhardwood1593
      @robinhardwood1593 ปีที่แล้ว

Good point! Apart from blade geometry, carbon content does play the main role in most aspects that affect tougness. Maximum hardness of course, but also the formation of carbides with Chromium, Vanadium, Niobium and other alloy elements is a major factor in toughness. As is their size and distribution, which is why powdermetallurgy is so awesome.
But the really tough stuff (according to the testing results at knifesteelnerds) never exceeds 0.8 % of carbon respectively 0.7 % for non-powdered steels.
Joe's testing here has absolutely nothing to do with reality, but it shows very well that steel choice is almost negligible when performing such extreme tasks, because even the smallest mistakes that no one would ever notice during normal (or even abusive) use will inevitably lead to failure.

The kraton on those high prized knives are just a bad idea.
And those on Cold Steel tend to twist around the tang with hard use. Also splitting of the rubber/kraton handle happens with the larger choppers.

@ JOE X - Despite the knife not performing well, the physics are primarily responsible. You can see it on the attempted pull-ups. The length to thickness ratio, and length to width ratio, are both way too high. I don't know why people buy these types of knives. Cold Steel tantos are also typically very light, because the blades aren't very wide. I have the Recon Tanto in SK-5. Despite being 5_mm thick, it's a very light knife. That knife is made for a specific purpose. I like it. The blade length is only a little longer than 7". That's an appropriate length, for a knife with the ratios I mentioned.

@1:11 Dude. You need better hand protection than that. If the blade flips up, because it's a curved blade, you'll lacerate all of your fingers wide open. As long and sharp as CS knives are, they will cut right through those thin gloves. Invest in cut resistant gloves or full grain leather ones at least!
All in all, this looks like a decent blade. The longer the blade is, the easier it is going to break. The edge and tip seemed outstanding! Not familiar with this steel, but was looking at the SanMai versions.

It’s not a survival knife, nor was it designed to chop down metal poles or stab trucks. It’s basically a mini katana. The cpm 3v holds an edge longer when used to cut materials it was made to cut. Of course it will chip if you bang it against rocks. It’s a hard steel, which means it’s more brittle than aus8. But aus8 or 10 cannot hold an edge as long. They are softer materials. Super steel doesn’t mean you can bang it against rocks, it means it will hold an edge longer than lower cost steels in normal use, it also means that it’s corrosion resistant. Super steel doesn’t mean Superman steel.
I agree the knife isn’t worth 400$. 200 I think is reasonable in todays market.
