INSTRUCTIONS:
1 - You MUST run your game (like Skyrim) normally on your Steam Deck without mods first. It needs to create files. Start a new game and quit.
2 - For added FPS boot in Skyrim, when you run the game's original launcher, tap Options and check "windowed fullscreen" and "borderless", set the game to aspect ratio to "16:10 Widescreen" and resolution to "1280x800". Change your Detail to "HIGH"! (Default is Ultra)
3 - Start Steam Deck in Desktop Mode
4 - For Skyrim, install SKSE: Go to skse.silverloc... download SKSE (Anniversary or Special Edition) and paste all files and folder in same folder as the Skyrim.exe. Normally ./home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim Special Edition/ (Other games may have a necessary Script Extender like Fallout4.)
5 - Go to this site github.com/pik... in a browser on the Steam Deck. Under the Install section, right click (LB or left trackpad click) on his link and "save as", name it install.desktop and save it (Download folder is fine).
6 - Open the new file and execute it. This is going to do a lot of things. Just let it run. It may take a while, maybe 3-5 minutes but less than 10.
7 - It adds Post-Deploy shortcuts to desktop which needs to be run every time after you change/install mods in Vortex. It is also installing FNIS and BodySlide as tools! If your game does't end up with a Post.Deploy icon with its name, then skip running any Post.Deploy.
8 -After everything is done, open Vortex from the icon on the Desktop.
9- You will need to manually set the location of where your m game is. Use either the J: or K: drives - Skyrim Special Edition (for example).
(J: is internal storage games, K: is sd card games, usually)
10 - Vortex will pop up some warnings about staging location and deployment method. Just walk through their fixes.
(Staging folder needs to be on the same drive as the game.)
The suggested path works here.
11 - Deployment method should be hardlinks.
12 - This is going to do a lot of things. Just let it run.
13 - After everything is done, open Vortex from the icon on the Desktop.
14 - You can go to Nexus Mods and download a mod or my Skyrim collection at next.nexusmods... . It'll ask if you want to associate Vortex with this type of file, say yes, every time.
15 - You'll need to associate mods to open with Vortex in an additional pop-up (it may be behind the browser window) scroll to the bottom and select Vortex.
16 - In Vortex, tap Dashboard, find and tick Enable Toolbar to add tools to the top of Vortex. Don't forget to run FNIS in Vortex after every actor/character change. i.imgur.com/8i...
17 -Once your mods are downloaded and done, on the desktop run the shortcut Post-Deploy for your game IF there is one. This again needs to be run every time after you change/install mods in Vortex before playing Skyrim.
19 - Switch back to Gaming Mode and enjoy!
Mod Notes
You MUST install SKSE manually in to the main folder with the .exe for these mods to work.
You must install High_Poly_Head from Vectorplexis.com (vectorplexis.c...) which requires you to sign up and login.
Jewelry Limiter (multiple rings/amulets) MUST be enabled in MCM menu.
Alternate Start mod will work fine, but if you want the most recent version use this off-site link as it is no longer being updated on Nexus Mods and have to got to AFKmods.
Male NPC's never wear less than their shorts. If you want them nude/SOS install the optional mod Tempered Skins for Males
TROUBLE SHOOTING : Discord = discord.gg/SD4...
If after installation Vortex doesn't want to open, got to Go to /home/Deck/.Pikdum/steam-deck-master/vortex and run install-vortex.desktop. It'll reinstall Vortex (won't erase your mods).
If collection never gets to 100%, go to the collection in Vortex, find the mod not listed as installed and pick ignore in the dropdown.
To Uninstall/Delete:
1 - Open Dolphin (file explorer), and click/tap the 3 lines in the upper right and make sure "Show Hidden Files" is checked.
Then Delete:
2 - /.pikdum/
3 - remove vortex
4 - /.vortex-linux/
5 - /.local/share/applications/vortex.
6 - manually remove desktop icons

This really really helped me, i've been through 4 different guides today since I tried mod organizer 2 the other day and wasn't super fond of it, I was looking to get vortex working and there was no guide as simple and easy to follow as this! Thank you so much!

I cant believe it finally happened, im blown away this is the greatest thing ive discovered on steam deck
If anyone's just come across this video and is interested in doing this. I can confirm installing vortex still works however its not as easy as shown in this video.
Since this video came out vortex has gone through a few updates which has caused the process to change, for example vortex will not automatically detect any games installed and it will throw some errors after doing this that can be fixed through vortex.
I spent about 3 hours trying to get this to work today and I finally got there. The instructions in this video are outdated and the github page also did not have very clear instructions. I have had a word with the github author today and he has now provided an UPDATED GUIDE on the github page.

The latest is there are 2 options right night going forward. If Vortex is working for you on version 1.7.8 then you can keep as is, or you can uninstall everything (including Vortex and all your mods) and redownload Pikdum's tools. He's reworked it so it no longer uses SteamTinkerLaunch. It's more reliable and uses the latest version of Vortex 1.8.0. Up to you.

Tried this after the lutris method didn't work for. Never got anything on desktop even after I re-executed Vortex.desktop gunna try reimaging the deck and try again.
Ugh... I've tried so many of these "methods for modding on the deck" and they never work fully. I always hit some kind of snag. My deck has been nothing but a streaming tool since I got it. As I pretty much only play modded Bethesda games on PC, everything else is console. I really hope this works.

Welp, i tried everything. deleting and reinstalling everything, but no, Vortex won't open. it just shows a black screen with a loadingbar at the top for a few seconds and thats it. nothing after that. i even left it for over half an hour.

I think this is all outdated now. I've managed to install Vortex but nothing is connecting, it can't find Skyrim and when I tried to do it all manually nothing works
Same completely broken for me as well. It won't detect where skyrim is installed and when I automatically set it, it gives me another error stating it cannot find the skyrim config files. Switching back to MO2

For some reason my installation is getting stuck at installing dotnet
I'm having the same problem. I tried to factory reset my steam deck but I'm still having the same problem.
Are you running only the mods in my Collection? None should need .Net. I don't think .NET works on linux but you may be able to trick it. Others have said they had issue cause they interrupted the install process. I believe the game itself installs a .NET framework. You could always try manually downloading it and see if that helps. But again its only for Window so may or may not help. dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download
Didn't work for me unfortunately, I try to open the Vortex icon after it was supposedly installed and nothing comes up. Tried Updating clicking Pikdum's Tools, restarting, deleting and doing the whole process again. Nothing comes up when I click the Vortex icon.
Same for me it says the same thing but doesn't actually open Vortex it just quits to my desktop.

I get to the part where it has "install Vortex" on the desktop, but when I try, the things it needs to download fails and says "no internet connection" for the "steamtinkerlaunch" part specifically
I'd say try and uninstall all the files (listed in the vid description) and reinstall.

Copy over the folder? This sounds like the PC method and not the Steam Deck. Either way, SKSE is generally copied over first, the mods.
Please do a video on profiles when me modding with pikdum tools. I'm unsure if/when you need to use the post update tool.
Update is just to see if Pikdum has updated his program. Use Post.Deploy after any mod changes before running the game. So you'd load Vortex, changed your profile, probably run FNIS, then Post.Deploy, go to game mode and play Skyrim. If you're playing something other than Skyrim, don't run Post.Deploy tool.

When I try to open vortex to finalize the installation, it won’t open when I right click on the vortex icon. Do I need to open it with some other software?
Nope. Should work. Try uninstalling all the files and try again.

how do you get your skyrim to launch SKSE within gaming mode? do you rename the launcher like with other installation methods?
That's a great question! I'm found out from Pikdum. You DO still need to install SKSE. I'll add that to the description of the vid and my collection too. So you'll need to:
Download [SKSE64](skse.silverlock.org/) and paste all files and folder in same folder as the Skyrim.exe, Then rename **SkyrimSELauncher** something like **SkyrimSELauncherORIG** and rename **skse64_loader** as **SkyrimSELauncher**.
Give that a try.
@@Oasis_Arcade ok when you got the update list delay will it rename skse64 loader to sklauncher itself as you said in the description or do you have to do it manually
@@tlon5431 The post.deploy tool will rename SKSE to launcher for you. If for some reason your mods aren't loading, double check and make sure it worked. It renames the original SkyrimSELauncher to _SkyrimSELaincher. So if you see it with _ then you're good.

Installed correctly mods work and everything but vortex will no longer open only pops up icon then dissappears, help?
If after installation Vortex doesn't want to open, go to /home/Deck/.Pikdum/steam-deck-master/vortex and run install-vortex.desktop. It'll reinstall Vortex (won't erase your mods).

I'm on the step where you open Vortex so it can finish the install process, and it doesn't seem to be finishing. I understand it takes a while, but I'm wondering roughly how long? It's been sitting for over 30 minutes, and Vortex hasn't finished yet. Any help is appreciated.
This happened to me too. I'd say force stop it and try again or uninstall/delete everything and rye again. Instructions at end of video and in description.

I've found that my Deck requires Steam to be running for my controls to work now. Does it give an error for you deployment?
I got it installed with this video for oblivion, however when i launch the game by any means the mods arent loaded its just vanilla. The mods are all enabled and i used the post deploy shortcut.

Yeah, I not only did the update, but tried to restore my system to an older version and ended up wiping all my mods (the Steam Deck uninstalls your games when you do that) without backing everything up first. So now I have no mods AND no Vortex😭.
Definitely DO NOT update Vortex with this method! At least not for now. I can only hope Vortex will remember all my mods if and when it starts working again. It probably won't since I tried to uninstall Pikdum's tools and reinstall them (needless to say, it didn't work 😣)...

I need some clarification, as your directions about SKSE was not really clear.
I may have to redo everything, but when putting in SKSE into the root folder, do i place the SKSE folder into the root folder.
Or do i put the contents of the SKSE folder into the root folder?

Hey about the file association. I clicked the always open tick box in chrome and now no matter what I do I can't remove that association. I want to get it working with MO2 and the option inside there doesn't work. I don't know how to reset that option within Chrome itself and I've tried xdg-mime but I don't know what to look for. This install if vortex is default no matter what I do

I prefer MO2 due to the mod manager placing the mods into a special mods folder that doesn't clutter up Skyrim's data folder like Vortex does. However trying to get MO2 to install on my steam deck was a fucking pain in the ass lol. Again while I prefer MO2 I'm not against using Vortex. This easy to install tutorial was a godsend cause I refuse to play skyrim ae without mods.
How in the holy hell did you get MO2 to work with your steam deck because I have been trying for days and I can’t find anything to help
does anyone know how to add supported vortex games to this install tool? I'd like to mod cult of the lamb and stardew Valley. I already tried to add them but vortex refuses "to see" their install folders.
How did you install MO2? I used STL and it works but doesn't work with Chrome and the nxm files regardless of clicking the option in settings. Plus I still have Vortex installed and downloaded a massive collection of like to move over
@@pandawhokills I have MO2 on my steamdeck and run FNV. Same process for Skyrim. It’s a pretty painless process overall. @Ohnoitsalexx has a pretty good Skyrim guide on YT for MO2. It’s slightly outdated with the proton versions but process is all the same

First of all many thanks for an excellent video tutorial. I installed Vortex on my Steam deck as per instructions in the video, but it won't run in game mode. I then applied it to steamthinkerlaunch in the game mode, it appeared in the game mode whole and rather healthy looking with the mod collection fully present. It even starts but then it stops running again. Any advice or suggestion would be much welcomed. With thanks in advance...
Hmm you shouldn't need to apply anything. Redownload the Pikdum tool cause he updated it a few days ago. Delete every file (at end of vid/in description) then run the redownload Pikdum tool and try again.

My "Install Vortex" thing only takes 98 seconds to finish but also looks nothing like what yours does. It also changes nothing. There's no new icons. It's still just "Install Vortex". I don't even see any errors either... I'm so lost...
Sounds like its bad. Delete everything (listed at the end of the vid and description), redownload Pikdum's tools, verify Skyrim game files via Steam, and try again.
I'm playing downgrading Skyrim, is there a way to avoid the update? Launching from Steam is scary because there is a forced update.

I followed this method, installed a collection, the collection is now on it's 10-20th install run, it keeps installing the collection over and over but each time it only installs a few GB of the downloads.

Both Skyrim and Vortex would need to be installed on the SD card.
I want to put all my mods from my pc to steam deck. My question is: can I just put all my mods in vortex on steam and at the end of deploying ALL the mods, run "skyrim post deploy"? Or do I really have to run it every single mod?
Does anyone else have to enable the individual plugin from the creation menu in game? I run the post deployment everytime, doesn't really make a difference. Hell what does it even do?
i downloaded the "install.desktop" and it just opens up "kate"?? it dose not allow me to execute the program, please help

I am trying to mod Baldur's Gate 3 and keep getting a message about External Changes: Mode files were changed outside Vortex. You can undo these changes now or apply them permanently. Links were deleted ("Save" will remove the corresponding source files permanently, "Revert will recreate the links). Then, I have the option to save change or revert change.
No matter which I choose, my Mods do not deploy.
What am I doing wrong here and why can't I get this to work?

Yeah you'll want to usually revert. Though Vortex had an update that broke it for Pikdum's tools on Steam Deck. I'd suggest redownload from the tutorial link and try again.
Did you ever get this working? I'm experiencing the same issue right now (external mod file changes - save/revert?). I was wondering if it was a permissions issue or symlink issue etc. The installation directions say to do hardlinks but Vortex won't let me pick anything but symlinks in the dropdown for Deployment Method in the Mods tab of Settings.
Even if you choose to Revert, it appears the files have already been deleted in the Game Mod folder. Or maybe they were never created/copied over to being with?
I have been trying to get this to work. I got to the part where I am supposed to install vortex by double clicking the icon, let the script run, install what it needs, and finally it should give me the 3 icons like it shows at 3:00. I tried running the updater, it didn't work. I tried resetting, factory resetting, reinstalling everything, and still, didn't work. I don't know if I am just missing something, or if this no longer works. I can see that it is doing something to install part of it, but something isn't working.
Was there anything else I may need to get this to work, or am I better off not bothering with this anymore? Does it matter if Skyrim is installed on the internal storage, or can this work while installed on an SD card?
This can work on an SD card but I believe Skyrim and Vortex need to be on the same drive. So both on internal or both on SD card. But the Vortex program itself should load regard less (just not run mods). You're saying you can't get Vortex to start at all?
@@Oasis_Arcade Vortex isn't installing properly. It installs part of it, but not all of it. I can find part of the files for Vortex and the other programs. That tells me it fails during part of the download, doesn't know what to do, and closes before finishing the installation. That's why I needed to know if installing on the SD card was important.
@@Oasis_Arcade The files I see are the .pikdum folder, a Vortex icon labeled "Install Vortex," a Deck generic icon labeled "Update Pikdum's Tools," the stl folder, and the steamtinkerlaunch folder.
One of the major things I see missing is the share folder under the .local folder. I do not know if any other files are missing from the download that could be preventing the install from properly completing. Please let me know if you know how to resolve this issue.

I have a question. I modded Fallout 4 with about 90 mods and it runs perfectly when launching the game through Vortex. However, when I launch the game thru steam on desktop mode or gaming mode it is a completely different set of saves and will not let me load or create a new game due to insta crash. Is there a way to get my modded saves to steam so I can just boot up and play Fallout 4 from gaming mode?

In theory it should work on anything that uses Vortex. But you'd need to look up how to mod your games and then do it the same way you'd do it on PC only on the Deck. I believe the game and Vortex need to be on the same drive (hdd or SD card). Don't run the Post.Deploy file at the end.

Will this work with fallout 4? Been trying to mod FO4 on steam deck for 2 weeks now and no videos i watched helped.
So I've had a chat with Pikdum and he thinks it should but may need some modification. Getting more info for ya.
So I talked to Pikdum, the issue I think is that his code specifically has file names for Skyrim. So you could get Vortex to work but you have to go back to Sonic2kk's tinker tools and not use Pikdum's easy install set up. You have to download F4SE manually, and install it in the main game folder, then rename "Fallout4Launcher.exe" to something like "Fallout4LauncherORIG.exe" FIRST then rename "f4se_loader.exe" to "Fallout4Launcher.exe". Then mod the game in Vortex and play!

I've only focused on Skyrim but I did try FO4 and it worked. You'll just have to investigate

Vortex had an update that broke it for Pikdum's tools on Steam Deck. Redownload from the tutorial link and try again.

The latest is there are 2 options right now going forward. If Vortex is working for you on version 1.7.8 then you can keep as is, or you can uninstall everything (including Vortex and all your mods) and redownload Pikdum's tools. He's reworked it so it no longer uses SteamTinkerLaunch. It's more reliable and uses the latest version of Vortex 1.8.0. Up to you.
It tells me that the game has not been found when I click on 'manage'.
Should this work for Fallout 4 as well without many changes to your method? Besides like, making sure it's in the Fallout 4 folder, obviously
Yep, someone else asked and I got it to work. Instead of SKSE you'll need F4SE and follow the same steps. Select FO4 game instead of Skyrim and don't run Post.Deploy at the end.

My Skyrim will stay loading when launching in game mode but if I launch in desktop it launches through vortex quickly. I was wondering if I botched a step? Or if I just have to let it load since of the mods

So I have managed to get Vortex downloaded and working but for the life of me I don't know how to set up the Staging Folder for Skyrim. Right now Skyrim is on my SD card. What do I do?

-You will need to manually set the location of where Skyrim game is. Use either the J: or K: drives > Skyrim Special Edition
(J: is internal storage games, K: is sd card games)
-Vortex will pop up some warnings about staging location and deployment method. Just walk through their fixes. (Staging folder needs to be on the same drive as the game.)
-The suggested path works here.
-Deployment method should be hardlinks.

I have tried this several times and continue to have zero success. I have download both Skyrim and Vortex to my SD card however, when I try to install your collection, my deck hard drive keeps running out of space. Not sure why files are being stored on the internal drive, seeing I directed skyrim and vortex to the SD card. Can you please provide some guidance on how to properly correct this issue.
Make sure your mod staging folder is on the SD card drive (usually K drive).
So new question. Vortex auto updated into a version i apparently couldnt use with my steam deck anymore. I tried to delete it and redownload it but now vortex doesnt even recognize i have oblivion so i cant disable or uninstall the mods even when i find a way to open vortex. I think im just having trouble finding where the file is supposed to be on my steam deck so it can recognize the games
Which file? Oblivion game file? That should be on either J or K drive.

Hey, I have a question about getting the game to start with mods working. I think I already know where my issue lies, so I'm gonna have to start lover with the whole process, but basically, run the game once Vanilla style, (Do I have to get to where I can move around?), once that's done, exit, go to desktop and start the entire process by installing skse manually? Then by the end of the walk through you made us, just go back into gameing and the game will run with the mods activated?
Correct. Start game (just to Bethesda logo/soonist you can quit is fine, no you don't have to move around), (don't forget to hit "options" before "play" and set detail to HIGH, windowed, etc in my guide), then go to desktop mode. Yes, install SKSE manually by downloading, unzip, and move to game folder. Then run Pikdum's tool file and follow guide. After mods, go to game mod and mods are now part of the game. Play as normal (you'll get a back screen with text, that's SKSE). Enjoy!

for Skyrim, FO3, FNV, FO4 does the game need to be installed on the nvme for vortex (mod manager) to recognize the game like other tutorials state? cause I have the 64gb model and FO4 won't fit without maxing the internal storage, so I use my sd card until I upgrade internal storge. So my question is will vortex work if game is installed on the micro sd card?
They both have to be on the same drive, internal or SD card.

Yes it will! I tried it on FO4. After starting Vortex you'll pick FO4 instead of Skyrim and don't run the Post Deploy tool. Also you'll see to manually instal F4SE instead of SKSE (outlined in the video description).

So I made the mistake of setting my grapchics to ultra and now with vortex set up and running a collection I don’t ever get the graphics option screen and I would really like to set the graphics lower so I can get a decent frame rate how would I do that?
You can get the option pop up back by switching the names of _SkyrinSELauncher and SkyrimSELauncher. The one the the underscore(_) is the original. Or if you did it yourself. You just need the original SkyrimSELauncher file back and named that. If you deleted it then rename SkyrimSELauncher to something like SkyrimSELauncherNEW and then verify game files. It'll redownload the original. Dont forget to reploy your mods and run post.deploy after.

You can try restarting your Steam Deck, and running the update file. If it still doesn't work, then delete everything (listed at the end of the vid and description) and start over.

Any tips on how to downgrade.Skyrim? I tried using that Reddit post on my steam deck that lets you go to nav console and then you copy and paste whatever and then it downgrades. You just drag and drop and you're done. But for some reason every time I hit enter on their nav console link, nothing happens. It just comes up with Google searches.

I have Vortex running damn near flawless with Skyrim.. but when it came to Fallout 4, none of my mods will work, and apparently Vortex keeps giving me this administrative access denied message whenever I deploy the mods I installed. People keep saying i have to go to properties of the game's exe file and uncheck the "read only" box. But there is no read only box on the Deck for some reason. Some also say to run it as admin. I have no idea how to do that either. Any suggestions?

The set up does work, many people experience this including me. I don't know why. If after installation Vortex doesn't want to open, got to Go to /home/Deck/.Pikdum/steam-deck-master/vortex and run install-vortex.desktop. It'll reinstall Vortex (won't erase your mods). I have to do this every so often. Ill add this to the guide.
Probably a dumb question, but can you mod games like red dead redemption 2 with this because I know it’s in vortex as an available game to manage.
It should yes. I got it working with Fallout4. You'd just need to what the requirements are to mod RDR2 on PC and try on the Deck.

What happens when you try to install mods? If its error 403 then you need to download them manually and install to Vortex, or buy a month of Premium (faster) and install. You can turn off auto-charge right after. Premium ~$7.
For one it keeps saying failure to launch game data even though I already ran the game multiple times but it doesn't seem it and it said download failed requesting url, I'm new the the whole vortex thing and don't know how to find the file and manually download it

Hi, sorry for pure english. How uninstall mods when Vortex uninstalled?
When you uninstall Vortex, the mods should delete too.
To Uninstall/Delete:
1 -Open Dolphin (file explorer), and click/tap the 3 lines in the upper right and make sure "Show Hidden Files" is checked.
Then Delete:
2 - .pikdum folder (Found at home/deck/.pikdum/ )
3 - Desktop shortcuts
4 - Files "pikdum-vortecx.desktop" and "vortex-steamtinkerlauncher-dl.destop" (found at home/dek/.local/share/applications/ )
5 - stl folder (found at /home/deck/stl/ )
6 - steamtinkerlaunch folder (found at home/deck/~/.config/steamtinkerlaunch
So if I wanted to mod FNV the same way, I could just do this, but with NVSE? No post/deploy needed?

You have to pick FO4 from the games. If its not there, make sure it installed on the same drive (internal vs SD card).
What if I don't care about Skyrim and just want Vortex, what do I do differently?
Just ignore anything I say about Skyrim. It would still be the same steps for any game, but without running the Post.Deploy.
