So I needed to comment and support this guy, because the part of the video beginning at 10:45 actually allows you to download entire collections via Vortex on the Steam Deck through the URL method. Made installing Skyrim Immersive mods 10x easier.

@@GrownUpGamingGUG I would love a tutorial for Fallout as I couldn't see the same kind of folder for Fallout 3 or NV (Not tried F4 yet) in the numbered folder thing that you see from Protontricks, Though I may have been dumb and done something wrong a long the way
2 things I'd like to add to this video 1: instead of moving the folder pick the create link option instead. It works just as well 2: On steam deck if you don't have a m&kb plugged in there's no way to get the context menu to open to allow you to paste links in vortex Just open the keyboard & near the bottom right there's a paste button. Use that.
Thanks for your suggestions. I don't like the link option because over time I forget what links where and it gets messy. But that's just my personal preference. Thanks for the input.

I'm like 99% sure symlink is way smarter than copying the entire game folder. Especially because there's a "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps" directory already inside Vortex's compatdata folder. If you just symlink the "common" directory from your actual steamapps folder, you get a C:\ file path for Nexus, and can also keep all your different games inside one folder and not have to do a ton of copying if you want to work on multiple games.

So just in case anyone is as new as I am at navigating the steam deck, when you get to the part where you have to put quotes around the path in the ‘target’ field, to get the keyboard to pull up, just hit X. For some reason I’d got it in my head that I needed to hit the steam button and then X to open the keyboard, and was getting very frustrated when I was unsuccessful for an embarrassingly long time. Just hit X. That’s all. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the corner wearing a dunce cap. I’ll also be playing my newly modded save file for Baldur’s Gate 3, so at least there’s that.
Would you happen to know why when I get to the part to put the Game location in the drive C: folder, when I go to my steam library, and press options on my game, there is no shortcut option where the links are. I have general, and compatibility tab. But no target url or anything

It would work, but you would need to change target exe from vortex.exe to game.exe everytime which will be a hassle. And you would need to install vortex for every game you want to mod.

Man this really helped me with my bannerlord mods thank you, I will be installing sim mods for my gfs deck. Appreciate this tutorial, it does take a lot of trial and error and patience but it all works if you just take your time. And I cannot stress enough that if you are on a steam deck first download all the mods and enable them when the game is on the c drive. Do not redownload the game like steam wants too, instead go in your c drive folder where your vortex lives and manually drag and drop your game back into your steam common library it will boot with everything you added, I know he mentioned it but it was a bit unclear and I thought you needed two copy’s and I’m sure people having an issue are doing the same thing I was. Happy modding.
@@lumopal6473 I installed the mods by opening vortex and dropping them from my browser download straight to the section that says downloads once the game was in the c drive folder of vortex. Also I enabled the DIII on steam deck it will ask permission to execute not the same security tab they show here. Also I found that if I just open the zip folder and find the actual mod I can drag that to my modules folder in my game and not have to use vortex. Vortex just helps make it simple and easy. You probably haven’t gone into the folder and enabled diii, go to the bin folder and open the windows 64 folder and in their will be the diii, enable it but going to permissions and putting executable. @@nickramakers6694 In the end I downloaded them manually and tried one by one to see which mod the game crashed for me, it was a very old one from bandit militia or something like that so I removed it and it was already working fine, you also have to look carefully at the loading order of the mods, there is some guide out there but they usually put the ones that make the most changes to the game like RBM as high as you can but below vanilla, you download them manually and extract them and paste them in the folder that says "modules", if you want To use vortex you need a keyboard to ctrl+v the mod link as done in the video but if you get used to doing it manually it is easy. Oh and look at the version of the mod, if it is very old, look for a newer similar one or change the version through the Steam beta to an older one.
This video is very well explained. I downloaded this on my steam deck before, but I couldn’t get Game on the manager, so I gave up and uninstalled the program, but if I can’t get mod to work this time, I’m not going to ever uninstall this program because it is difficult to get it to work again for me. You do a very good job on explaining stuff and your videos are very detailed. I appreciate that.
I figured out a way to use symlinks with this video! This way you don’t have to move the entire game folder and possibly mess up future game updates with Steam. You have to create two Symlink folders. The first folder goes to the game folder for managing(c root “Starfield”--> game root folder). The second folder goes to a completely empty mod folder(c root “Mods”-->(game root “Mods”, used for deployment and staging (created a mods folder within the root game folder) I was getting a “mods can’t be deployed”error before I did this and after I did this, the error completely went away.
thanks for sharing! as most my games are non-steam games, i can run them anywhere so i like to just move the game folder inside the vortex/wemod prefix folder i created so it can both be modded and run cheats at the same time.
Dude, you and the original poster are life savers! It took me awhile to find the install location for Vortex. (I used a different way to install it then this video) It was located in the Home/Vortix.Linux/compatdata/drive_C... ect I also put an empty Mod folder in the game folder I wanted to work with! Bingo! It worked!

Guys I need some serious help on this one. I downloaded 9 mods and exported it into the Steam Deck to install. I kept getting "External Changes" errors. My Witcher 3's installed on the Micro SD card so I took some of the advice and moved the Vortex app folder into the Micro SD Card.
Great tutorial, thank you! Just a note for any other people thinking about this, cutting and pasting the Starfield folder is an INSTANT process so its not a big deal pasting it back and forth from the Vortex C Drive and the Steam "common" folder.
There is install from file option in the mods tab of vortex. Seems my in app browser crashes Everytime now as well. Too bad. I hope they fix it at some point
So I'm following this video as my guide to try and get Vortex working on my Deck currently, one thing I was alittle confused about was what to do exactly if youre using the steam version of a game. I'm trying to get Fallout 4 to work through Vortex but having some difficulty here when I try to "manage" the game through Vortex, seems it cant find the install location for a regular steam game. Any help is appreciated 👍
I'm trying to follow the guide but once I get to 4:51 when it's time to launch Vortex nothing happens, I start it, the loading icon appears and at that point it closes on its own. Any suggestions on what to do?
Awesome guide! For those of you who are exclusively using an sd card for your games, rather than moving your games to your hard drive logical thing is move vortex instead. You can use the same method of drag and drop to move the black tree game folder to your external drive if you already installed to your decks internal drive
I actually installed vortex on wemod prefix. And now all games are on wemod prefix folder so I can use wemod and vortex to manage them without transferring them around.
So belay my above post, if you just move vortex to the sd cars it affects updating it and the uninstaller, so it is better to just install it to the drive your keeping your games on in the first place. I ended up deleting it and then reinstalled in my case

Okay, so I’m stuck at the part where I need to help Nexus manually find my game “Stardew Valley”. I have no “shortcut” on the game…And whenever I tried to play the game that’s installed through the common steamapps folder, it says “no game in the folder.” Which maybe goes into the Drive-C issue where it needs to be in there, BUT- I can’t find where it is and what to put in there…So how do I get the file route/What do I put into Drive-C in that instance? It’s downloaded from steam. Not from an external source.
I'm using non-steam version so I can just move the game folder inside vortex prefix drive_c. For steam version you might have to move it back and forth.

And then nothing happens and it acts like i haven't launched it. I've been stuck at the library screen forever.
I tried lutris first when I was following a tutorial on steam for modding BG3 and it didn't work, so I tried your method and I got all the way to launching it from steam after I put in the pathing under properties and it just keeps telling me it's running though nothing is popping up or loading in, and then 5 seconds later steam will act like I didn't try to launch it and the program will go back to the "play" launch button.
@GrownUpGamingGUG yes, and then I removed them like you had in the "start in" category below it as well as removed the .exe at the end of vortex and added the slash. I'm not really sure what's going on with it.

There has to be one though, because the game works perfectly well. I'm trying to get it working with a legit copy of Marvel Mignight Suns.
What about doing a video for the Frosty mod manager? I understand there is a linux fix out there but it may be only for a certain version of Frosty. I would like to mod Need for speed heat and unbound on my steam deck when I get it but there is not much info out there for it.
Is there a way to get this to work with a game you've downloaded through steam, like normal? I ask because I cannot find the game itself once Iget to the step in the video at 9:07. When i get to the game's driveC there is no game. Im looking for Fallout NV.
Got everything to work until I’m actually in vortex searching for a game. My steam deck won’t register or type anything into the search bar. I don’t have a mouse and keyboard just the deck
Well, I finally got it to work! ^^ Thanks for this guide. I just chose to keep my game file in my C-Drive and run Vortex from the Steam Library. I do have one other question though. How can one move their save file from the Steam game to the game file in the C-Drive. I don't really want to start all over again with all my progress and was wondering if there was a fix for this?
I made it all the way to trying to search for my game in Vortex, but my keyboard won't pull up. I can only interact by tapping. Any idea what is happening?
Is there anyway to do this without moving the Game folder to the C Drive?. Because i don't have enough free space unfortunately, or would i have to upgrade the internal storage before i can do this?
So I needed to comment and support this guy, because the part of the video beginning at 10:45 actually allows you to download entire collections via Vortex on the Steam Deck through the URL method. Made installing Skyrim Immersive mods 10x easier.

2 things I'd like to add to this video
1: instead of moving the folder pick the create link option instead. It works just as well
2: On steam deck if you don't have a m&kb plugged in there's no way to get the context menu to open to allow you to paste links in vortex Just open the keyboard & near the bottom right there's a paste button. Use that.
Thanks for your suggestions. I don't like the link option because over time I forget what links where and it gets messy. But that's just my personal preference. Thanks for the input.

you're on the legion go with windows, you don't need compatability. proton is for linux. it's a layer to play windows games on linux.
The second way doesn't work for me. When I try to paste smth nothing is happening
@Valcirin yeah I think you have to tap the box again after you open the keyboard because it takes you out for some reason.
That's good for steam games.
How does one do this?

Yes, virtual keyboard can be brought up with steam button plus x button.
I guess I'm still feeling like a dunce. I can bring the keyboard up, but the address field won't register any input from the keyboard. 😩
Would you happen to know why when I get to the part to put the Game location in the drive C: folder, when I go to my steam library, and press options on my game, there is no shortcut option where the links are. I have general, and compatibility tab. But no target url or anything

Appreciate this tutorial, it does take a lot of trial and error and patience but it all works if you just take your time. I figured out a way to use symlinks with this video! This way you don’t have to move the entire game folder and possibly mess up future game updates with Steam. You have to create two Symlink folders. The first folder goes to the game folder for managing(c root “Starfield”--> game root folder). The second folder goes to a completely empty mod folder(c root “Mods”-->(game root “Mods”, used for deployment and staging (created a mods folder within the root game folder)
I was getting a “mods can’t be deployed”error before I did this and after I did this, the error completely went away.

I didn't have that. Maybe try another file.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG nah I figured it out I was being an idiot and trying to install .net 6 as vortex
Lol 🤣 glad you got it!
@@GrownUpGamingGUG now I gotta figure out an issue at 10:55
I'm confused about one thing, if someone is willing to help I would appreciate it.
At 14:11 he says if you're using the steam version of a game then you need to move the file back to the original location... But then at 15:58 he says the game needs to be in the same location as Vortex or it won't be able to manage the mods??
Does that mean Vortex can't actually work if you move the game back to the original location? Idk how all this works so I'm very confused.
Thanks in advance!
Yes, move the game folder inside vortex prefix folder when you use vortex to mod the game. After you finished modding, move the game back to original location to play the game. You don't need to use vortex at the point.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG You don't need Vortex to manage your games while you play?
Also, does this mean you need to move the game folder back into the Vortex folder every time there's a mod update?
After you mod the games you don't need vortex anymore. But if you need to add, update or delete mods then you need it to vortex to manage so you need to move the folder back. Moving folders is instant though.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG Alright, thank you! Would it be possible to mod Stardew Valley through Vortex on the steam deck? I somehow got it to work on my laptop following a guide but I have no idea how to do it on the deck.

Fallout 4 doesn't have the C drive folder you copied into the Vortex instance. I tried directing it to the other FO4 directory, and now it can't access the ini's from the user folder. I'm a little worried about copying both directories over, cause the game might get confused on where to place saves.
Edit: I copied the Fallout 4 folder from the other directory (right click the game in steam, browse files), and that worked. It just took rebooting Vortex a few times to generate the ini's in the documents location.
you can move it back over to original location after you finished modding the game.

@@RZA741 I've not tried that yet
Thank you for the video. Really great.
I'm curious about the long run of this. If Vortex requires an update, will this affect the app in the library? If so, what should I do?
I've never had to update it but you can just install over it using the same prefix folder. Or even simpler, install on the pc and transfer the black tree folder to overwrite the steam deck version.
Great vid. Very helpful. Though I really wish you led with the fact that vortex and the game had to be on the same drive :/
good point.

I also have an issue with the mouse button freezing (pressing the steam button on the deck unfreezes it) and it will crash vortex or the deck if I try to open a mod using a link the same way you do at 11:01
Any and all help is appreciated!
Is your game folder in the same directory as vortex? I find that if the game folder is not in the same directory as vortex, it has problems.
@@GrownUpGamingGUG thank you for replying so fast! I wasn't expecting you to get back to me so quickly
First thing I checked after you said in the video that it would be a common problem, it's definitely there in the same folder.
Seems the issue is that when I deploy mods they are swiftly removed from the mod folder. I actually manually copied in one of the .pak files into the mod folder, didn't deploy mods in vortex, launched the game, and now suddenly it works.
But that seems to be the issue, when I press deploy mods it deletes them from the mod folder instantaneously.
@@patrickmorrissey4811Same issue and found a fix. Change the Vortex Mod staging folder to a location on the same drive as your game installation. (Settings--Mods tab) Then make sure the Deployment Method is a "Hard link Deployment"
I was modding stardew and this fixed things for me.
ok, when i tried to do this, nothing looked the way it did for you. when i go to the drive_c folders, the only one that shows up is the one for vortex. all of my games do not have a [game] folder under drive_c for their respective [string on numbers] folder. so i did a symlink between the vortex "drive" and /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/. i am able to boot the game (bg3) from steam so i know the link works, but whenever i try to deploy mods they are all listed as redundant and i have no way of deploying. when i boot the game it says all my mods are missing.
i have the 1tb steam deck oled, im sure that probably doesn't matter but i figured say that just incase it does
I used non-steam game in this video. For steam games, use this th-cam.com/video/IGHh_0Xxg8Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aZbb66aaYOzrYMfu but for bg3, some viewers told me you need to install vortex inside bg3 prefix. I don't have bg3 on steam so I can't test it out.
Great tutorial, the only problem i'm having is, i can't change the F4se language in fallout 4. If i run fallout 4 from steam starts in my language, but when i run the game trough f4se starts in english.
i don't have much experience with script extender.
Does this still work?
I'm tired of playing games where they are I need some kind of improvement with mods
It works for me but it'll probably depend on the game you're trying to mod too
Why does my steam deck desktop have Exclamation mark on the files inside the Black tree folder. It wants me to specify what to do with (.exe / .bin / .dll / .dat) files
I don't have that. But what files do you need to run?
when i use vortex the find any game, i click on home, deck, steamapps. and then nothing. blank. why wont vortex see any of the games i have in the steam games folder? its becoming upsetting. its just not finding anything. just blank. ive put vortex into the same folder. nothing. why?!?!?!?!
put it inside drive_c of the vortex prefix. then you can find it in my computer/c:/
I did everything you said but when I added Vortex to Steam "Non-games" Library...I clicked on the "settings cog", so once I opened Vortex, I do not see the Compatibility tab...all I see is "Shortcut" and "Controller"... 🤔 I downloaded Vortex twice and also my Vortex didn't have exe at the end of it either...I even installed it the second time around to see if that was the problem, and nope, still no "Compatibility" tab.
