    But how is the rotational energy converted to lift the hammer in that first 1/4 ?

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      judgeomega - the driveshaft has a partial spiral that engages the hammer at 1/2 turns (it's explained in the video)

    • @moeriou8431
      @moeriou8431 8 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      judgeomega when one end of a spring turns but the other doesn't, the spring compresses.

    • @mdw159
      @mdw159 8 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      easy question.... if you rotate the end of the spring while holding it stand still on the other end,,, spring will get shorter in length.. ;-)

    • @gw819
      @gw819 8 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      In one direction, yes. In the other direction, the spring will get longer. This is not how it is being done. See the first reply. There is a partial spiral that engages the hammer at 1/2 turns.

    • @ericscherbarth1817
      @ericscherbarth1817 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The spring is not rigidly connected to any of the components, it only compresses to store energy and release to push the hammer. The movement of the hammer up and it's rotation back down is guided by a set of grooves between the hammer and transmission output.
      If you can get the impact mechanism out and compress the spring completely, it should be possible to dismantle the whole thing and see the grooves.

    Wait you are taking high speed video and you are not filming your friends getting kicked in the balls or someone blowing stuff up? I'm impressed, didn't think it was possible.

      I know testicular violence is the goto for high speed video but every one else seems to have that covered. If you check out my science fair play list there are a number of other videos where I use high speed to explore physics: th-cam.com/play/PL34A76DDE41F18A19.html

      Yeah, this was one of the first videos I did talking straight to the camera. I still tend to use pre-recorded video and voiceovers to avoid face time.

    this was incredibly informative and thanks for sacrificing the impact adapter to show us.
    I'm curious, however. How does the hammering action improve bolt or nut *extraction* ? Wouldn't the pounding/hammering counter the direction of the thread? I'm rather new to the world of power tools.
    Thanks again.

    • @NickMoore
      @NickMoore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the force is rotational and will work with you to remove a stuck nut or bolt but even the axial hits are helpful. Any kind of sharp impact will break the bond between threads and help get things moving.
