This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side. so after all this, it shows us he lost everything but gained what he truly wanted. Now the black scene towards the end where we could only hear their voices and meruem asking komugi if she is still there is the Rose's poison it made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because Meruems name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than Meruems. Then, as Meruem is slowly dying Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing eachother to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding").

Also ,now you know why Greed Island arc is overlooked, it's between these 2 colossal arcs. It is not a bad arc, in fact it's shounen at its finest. But CA and Yorknew arc are just too great they overshadowed it.
People call episode 131 sad, but this is even sadder and beautiful imo. me re watching this is in the double digits probably around 15 times or more, and i still cry so don't worry about it, haha

This ending is perfect. My favorite episode, too. The evolution of Meruem and everything dying at his side is just... Wow. His royal guards died for him, Komugi died for him, but even then, they couldn't have asked for anything better. For he is the King, and despite the fact that he was a bad king for the species, he was a admirable living being. Worthy of his name, Meruem, the king of kings. There is only one.
And I *LOOVE* how the last thing they both want to do is to play Gungi. Meruem doesen't give a fuck about anything else. He just wants to be with her for his last moments. Speechless.
The whole real diego thing felt like it showed the king's biggest flaw was underestimating humans. The fake diego gave him a false impression of humanity, its really interesting the more you think about it and why it was thrown in there.
Well its more of the fact that the King was thought to be cold hearted from the beginning, but ended up sparing the ruler of the kingdom he took over. If that's not symbolic, i don't know what is.
the first time i saw this i thought he somehow survived Meruem attack (lol) and he escaped after the decline of Chimera's after the Hunters action, and he turned good after that idk how xD (yes i'm dumb)
I didn't think much of it at all when I first saw this part, but now I feel like that scene with the real Diego is actually really profound. The nuke was the paragon of the "malice" aka "evolution" of humans Netero referred to, but this fattened dictator who orchestrated all of the corruption in the country being COMPLETELY above fucking everything that happened there in the Ant arc sipping on a drink and reading poetry on his porch exemplifies this concept far more. In the face of human deception and politics, a creature that can pulverize a mountain or traverse kilometers within seconds is *insignificant*
Everyone cries at the end of this episode, it's one of Togashi's secrets, he has shown us a monster in all its horror (killing children, devouring humans and showing canibalism) (Komugi), which is quite the opposite, of a perfect character construction and an excellent staging, Togashi makes us cry at the moment of the disappearance of the personage who is more than one Simple monster. It is said not often enough, it is a great pretender, anti-social but a pure genius pen in hand.

No it doesn't! That has never been said. Komugi was blind at first but in the end, Meruem is the one that becomes "blind", keeps asking if she is still there while she assures him that she is. Its like they switched roles.
i thought it was to see if she was still alive. Komugi may have been exposed to it less than Meruem has, but remember how weak Meruem believes her to be? He was concerned for her

a perfect rise and fall for our protagonist and antagonist. gon started the arc as a pure and kind boy and ended it fallen so far from the light represented. meruem started the arc as a cookie cutter shonen villain and ended it as a complex and well-developed character whom you felt genuine heartbreak over his death.
it's impossible. no one can not watch this episode and not feel something. meruem started off like a standard cookie-cutter shonen villain. and in the end, he became something so much more.
The Gungi piece that represents Komugi, "忍," should not be translated as "spy." It means patience and endurance. I was wondering if Komugi notices that Meruem isn't a human being when she touches his face and hand. Maybe she does, but that doesn't matter for her. Also, it's impressive that Komugi brings kokoriko back to life when playing against Meruem. She calls it as her baby, which was dead long before. The fact that it's reborn signifies their inter-species romance.

Am I the only one that felt kinda bad for Pouf's death? Like to me out of the three Royal Guards he was the most ant like in nature. For , unlike the other two he was not tested. He was loyal to the image of the king that he had in his mind he went out of his way to try to mold the king into that image. For he went through such lengths to prevent the king from remembering Komugi. In the end, Pouf failed and the way he died around those still brainwashed humans kinda reflected how Pouf just died all by himself.

I didn't think much of it at all when I first saw this part, but now I feel like that scene with the real Diego is actually really profound. The nuke was the paragon of the "malice" aka "evolution" of humans Netero referred to, but this fattened dictator who orchestrated all of the corruption in the country being COMPLETELY above fucking everything that happened there in the Ant arc sipping on a drink and reading poetry on his porch exemplifies this concept far more. In the face of human deception and politics, a creature that can pulverize a mountain or traverse kilometers within seconds is *insignificant*

Everyone cries at the end of this episode, it's one of Togashi's secrets, he has shown us a monster in all its horror (killing children, devouring humans and showing canibalism) (Komugi), which is quite the opposite, of a perfect character construction and an excellent staging, Togashi makes us cry at the moment of the disappearance of the personage who is more than one Simple monster.
It is said not often enough, it is a great pretender, anti-social but a pure genius pen in hand.
The tears again, and this is me re watching this arc in the double digits at this point, but this scene always seems to get to me and make me cry and i cant control it. its been fun watching this arc with you bro, my favourite anime arc, its just pure perfection imo, and this is my favourite anime episode. in all seriousness though, its gonna take me a few days to stop thinking about this episode and stop feeling sad like always, haha

No it doesn't! That has never been said. Komugi was blind at first but in the end, Meruem is the one that becomes "blind", keeps asking if she is still there while she assures him that she is. Its like they switched roles.

D4mN Pouf did not kill anyone, but the king killed dussins of people and pitou killed houndreds of thousands of people. Pouf was the only one not killing for fun unlike pitou and the king. He was fucked up, but not as much as the king and pitou.

PLEASE read this to understand how deep Togashi's writing for this really goes! (Credit goes to Fuji Huynh, I read this comment in another comment section and just had to save it because it's just so perfect!)
Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side..
The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.

gon started the arc as a pure and kind boy and ended it fallen so far from the light represented.
meruem started the arc as a cookie cutter shonen villain and ended it as a complex and well-developed character whom you felt genuine heartbreak over his death.
it's impossible. no one can not watch this episode and not feel something. meruem started off like a standard cookie-cutter shonen villain. and in the end, he became something so much more.

The Gungi piece that represents Komugi, "忍," should not be translated as "spy." It means patience and endurance.
I was wondering if Komugi notices that Meruem isn't a human being when she touches his face and hand. Maybe she does, but that doesn't matter for her.
Also, it's impressive that Komugi brings kokoriko back to life when playing against Meruem. She calls it as her baby, which was dead long before. The fact that it's reborn signifies their inter-species romance.

Am I the only one that felt kinda bad for Pouf's death? Like to me out of the three Royal Guards he was the most ant like in nature. For , unlike the other two he was not tested. He was loyal to the image of the king that he had in his mind he went out of his way to try to mold the king into that image. For he went through such lengths to prevent the king from remembering Komugi. In the end, Pouf failed and the way he died around those still brainwashed humans kinda reflected how Pouf just died all by himself.
