The great lesson in these videos is that Julian knows much more about music than he lets on. This guy knowwwwssssss

He certainly does! In my modern age videos i talk about how we know for a fact he's educated on this stuff!

FINALLY somebody says it... this song is heavily underrated and it makes me beyond joyed to see somebody address this line, as it is one of my favorites of any strokes songs.... this song is a BANGER and id love to see your analysis of more of their songs.. jules has a stroke of GENIUS when it comes to lyricism and music in general

I don’t understand anything AT ALL about music theory, in a literal sense, at all, and yet I enjoyed this so much! Thank you

I am so happy to hear that! Promoting deeper music appreciation in both musicians and music lovers who know nothing about theory is one of my main goals!

If someone hasn't said this yet, I feel like Julian repeats the triplet throughout the song over the time signature, like he's almost constantly fighting to be free of the rules that dictate us. "Is your free time to free minds or for falling apart?" That lyric almost matches "... just live as free and detached as boats to the dock?"

    Long theory time
It’s very obvious around this point in Julian’s career he started to shift into becoming a leftist, I see this song as Julian’s critique of capitalism/ contemporary hierarchical society’s as a whole especially 1st world nations such as America in particular inevitability making cogs of us all in a otherwise bigger machine that we hold no control/ power over. The song I believe talks about the natural progression of a citizens existence in a country like America, and how it makes a once hopeful optimist finish as a defeated cynic. The song starts with Julian talking to a person, a child or young adult starting out life “once that your music was born it followed you round, and then it gave your activities meaning and let you be loud”. This is a line that is said in the first half of the song, that in my opinion very clearly states “music” in this context is this persons principled moral outlook on life the way somebody would live there life for purpose/ meaning, but by the end of the song the lyric changes into “just like when music was born and detached from your heart, is your free time to free minds or for falling apart” the progression of this person Julian is emblematically talking about is becoming an adult and is slowly learning the disparity of growing in world we’re you have little control over your life, the monotony of everyday life/ existence is getting to this person as they get older, in a capitalist structure that only cares for profits over the well-being of mankind. Another point I believe was very intentional is the two chorus parts in this song the first chorus being a overview of someone growing up in this society, while the second chorus is what that same society inevitably does to the citizenry as they grow older and become effective workers, even to the point where I believe they are comprised in there once grounded beliefs. My perspective is that Julian is trying to convey what not very many people know about America and it’s pervasive actions to sedate and placate the masses. I believe he is talking about America and it’s use of manufactured consent to desensitize the masses to comply/ agree with their selfish violent motives, with lines such as, “sometimes it feels like world is falling asleep, how do you wake some one up from inside a dream” “generations to desensitize” obviously and “fury to tranquilize” the whole second chorus part really appeals to this theory in general I suppose. But lines such as “How disappointed would D.I.D.I.P.P be, to see such power in our hands all wasted on greed” and this videos analysis on the boats to dock lyric reinforces my theory on this being a critique on capitalism. The ending part ultimately just talks about someone becoming a rugged individualist/ capitalist and slowly devolves into a nation inevitably using its manufactured consent to lead us into yet another economic war, that forces us to use nuclear armament, and eventually leads to mutually assured destruction, the silence at the end implying this ofc.
