      That MUCH milk is DANGED UNCOMFORTABL! I HAD ONE MARE WHO WOULD ROUTINELY FILL SO FULL, THAT I'D WALK OUT TO TAKE SOME MILK FOR THE FREEZER AND SHE'D LIFT EACH HIND LEG TO THE SIDE, IN TURN! TRYING HER BEST TO HELP..SHE WAS AN ABSOLUTE DOLL BECAUSE SHE HURT SO MUCH AND UNDERSTOOD THAT A HUMAN CARRYING MILK PUMP AND BOTTLES MEANT "R- E -L -I- E- -F" . I WILL confess that I ALWAYS took a bottle from each and saved it(freezer) for the following year, just in case. One never knows when a mom might suddenly not have enough colostrum. 😉or, a surprise set of twins💕🤷‍♀️I'd rather be over prepared, than left stumped. So...making it a policy to take a bottle every time, as long as its possible, gives me that option. And so far its been a lifesaver. Which, with prices in the basement the last few years, has *also* allowed us to grab a few orphan calves(or twins) or bummer lambs and kids, start those off well, keep them going, finish as normal with fed as well as the other calves and then just add it to fluff the farm buffers.😁👍🤷‍♀️💞. Family farms need all the💞👏👏 help we can get$$! so, an extra animal saved or bought and well started...making for better profits, keeps the bottom line much healthier!🤑👍and allows us to keep the rest of our own lives and livestock healthier!🙃💕🤑🤷‍♀️👏👏💞🥰

      You are new here, yes? Her flock has a tendency to have multiple births. And she has had pregnancy toxemia showing up more than before - which is usually fatal. She has been taught to treat this, and the objective is if a ewe goes down, she needs to get the lambs out quickly. Plus she has become extremely good at delivering lambs when the ewe needs help due to whatever normal complication can come up. So she helps. She is trying to save the lives of the lambs and the ewes.

    • @LauraS1
      @LauraS1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@samanthaspencermccurry9798 Ideally, you do let the ewe do what she does but if she's been in labor THAT long, you do have to go in. As a sheep farmer myself, I like to let my ewes deliver without me but I'm always on hand to help out, which I've had to do many, many times. Malpresentation (ie, breech, backward, or a lamb coming out in an abnormal position) must always be attended to right away. You may have noticed the second lamb came out yellow? That's a sign of a hard labor that could go wrong. It's actually the lamb's own poop (because yes, they do make poop even when they're not yet born) and could get aspirated into the lamb's lungs among other things. Best to get the lambs out if you have to.

    • @LauraS1
      @LauraS1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@julieenslow5915 Most sheep have at least twins as that trait has been bred into them. I had two ewes who nearly always gave me triplets and sometimes quads. I'm really good at delivering lambs. LOL I've been up to my forearm many times either turning a lamb, usually a breech, or helping the mother get a huge one out. I raised black Romney sheep and then (now) Katahdin sheep for wool and for meat respectively. Even though I know they're going to be sold and most probably for food, each time I get a successful lambing, it's joyous. They're such goofballs until they hit the sheep equivalent of teenager-hood. Then you can't sell them fast enough. :D

How can you not admire and love such a person??? That high pitched and gasp "Hello!!!!" when she spots a newly born lamb... the most precious thing to ever escape Sandi's lips. Makes me smile every time, and her smile is CONTAGIOUS!!!
    Sandi, you are a remarkable woman!! You knew that lady needed help, even though you had a meeting to get to, she took priority. You helped her deliver her babies and that's what makes you such a spectacular person. You make your farm come first, no matter what. Such dedication is admirable, that's why Jessica admires you so much. She sees this daily, remember she mentioned how she admired your dedication months back in a video??? Watching videos of how you interact with your flock during lambing, the most hectic times of your year, shows your dedication at it's finest moments. We get to see it also. they do in new zealand. mostly it's a totally natural event. there are still casualties, as there are in any animal husbandry. to a new zealander, this looks like a battery hen/sheep operation. too many sheep in one pen. tiny spaces putting these poor sheep under stress at an already stressful time of lambing...looks horrible.

    • @jellofish1455
      @jellofish1455 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      These are inside, contained sheep so they are highly maintained and are higher maintenance because they are all there. If they were free range in a field they wouldn't be so high maintenance because it's just harder to get to them all and they are tougher out on their own. This is why free range and captive livestock is so heavily debated because you have to pick your poison and your healier. Both have draw backs and both have advantages.

We would skin the one that died and put the skin over the foster. Ewe was familiar with her lambs scent and she would accept the foster as hers within two days. Fed many with a bottle. I follow blue cactus dairy goats they hand milk the mom's. At the time her and 2 kids milked I think 16 does in 31 minutes. All by hand. She has a milk machine but she is just getting everyone back into a routine since they all just had babies.

    You need a tool belt, or a small cart. To hold all the things you may possibly need, to assist the ewes, and lambs. That way you don’t have to leave an animal that’s in distress.

    This brings back some memories of when I managed a hog farm. Sometimes we'd have to foster piglets. It was always easier when there was new mom and use her afterbirth. Occasionally it was during weaning time, when some weren't quite big enough to wean. We'd use one mom in the room and spray mom and baby with an antiseptic spray so they'd smell the same. One time it didn't work and the sow was getting upset and mean. The sow next to her was like, "give those babies to me", I did and she took very good care of them without having to spray her.

    In the UK, when a ewe has triplets, the owner will take the skin from a lamb who died and wrap it on one of the triplets and fasten it and it will stay on that triplet lamb until it outgrows it and that triplet will go to the ewe who lost her baby and she'll accept it because it smells like her lamb because of the skin from her baby.

    I found out with dogs, if the milk is really thick it's best to massage with a warm cloth or get a baby to nurse as soon as possible so she won't get mastitis or blocked up. Sometimes if the babies still won't nurse, you can milk the test till it runs clear and give a little sugar to the mom so the milk gets a little sweet. The little ones tend to nurse after that.

      I had one ewe literally pass out one year. I never in all my years of having sheep had had a ewe pass out from labor pains. She had a breech and had two more lambs pressed in behind it. I managed to get the lambs out while she was unconscious and got them dried off and such. I took advantage of that by milking her out while she was out so I could get the lambs to have colostrum. Then one of the lambs cried and she was wide awake, on her feet, and cleaning lambs like mad.
