    I use marigolds and other plants to repels. Add them and let them grow along side veggies. When i do a harvest i would cut up a few if the marigolds leafs to mask the harvesting sent as well. I plant my marigolds first then plant my veggies. The squash get extra marigolds plants.

    I am also a big fan of fish emulsion and like the Alaska brand. Another reason why this should be done in the morning while its cool is because the stomata are open. Plants actually have pores (stomata) and they will most effectively take in the foliar spray when its cool and the stomata are open.

    • @joanies6778
      @joanies6778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I heard they open in morning between 7-10am. If you are foliar fertilizing during that time, they take the nutrients into the plant while open and it feeds systemically. Is that correct?

    • @foxruneec
      @foxruneec 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@joanies6778 Timing will depend on your geographic area but yes before the sun gets too intense and hot. The plant then closes the stomata to conserve water. Absorption and movement is going to depend on the water and minerals available in the plant. That's why you want to thoroughly cover the plant with a foliar spray. To give it the best opportunities for the nutrients to reach the plant cells. :)

      @@melvinajessop696 yes you can. In fact, there is less evaporation occurring at night so a possible great absorption. I just happen to be a morning person so that schedule suits me best.

      Did the same, planted a single row of radishes just about one ft. from the cucumbers and and then did succession planting of radishes here in south east PA they are moderately heavy. It kept them down and I also shake my plants every night, don't know if that helps or not but my zucchini and summer squash are doing well right now. I also put the squash in relatively late, mid June. I am getting a harvest as of last week.

    I have found that growing nasturtiums in among the squash deters the squash bugs from ever getting the idea that your squash is their smorgasbord. The more nasturtiums, the fewer bugs. They seem to hate the smell of the nasturtiums for some reason. An added bonus is that besides being edible flowers, they can also be dried, crushed, and used as a pepper-like seasoning in all kinds of dishes.

    Beautiful tomatoes! Was so excited to hear y'all start talking about squash beetles then.....BAM! Disappointment.....all my zucchini died from those little buggers this year and still no solution (and hand picking doesn't work for growing 6 plants either ☹️) Thinking of skipping a couple of years and see if they just go away. I live in New Mexico, at 7500 ft elevation. Gardening has been tough but getting through.
    Now for the first time I had major bugs. Horn worms just about destroyed my tomatoes, but I found in another bed I had none. The reason is I have calendula and citronella in the bed. No bugs at all.
    Now I also had bugs eating my cucumbers, I read lemon balm was a possibility. So I took my pot of lemon balm and put in the middle of my cucumber plants. No more bugs.
    I had millions of moths. They were thick, I took my bug zapper , plugged it in st night, no more moths. Now your garden is bigger but you can then mine. But citronella is easy to take cuttings , keep in doors then then take cuttings from that plant , once plants root put in garden. Lemon grass works to but I prefer lemon balm.
    Hope this helps.
    Love you videos.
    I started watching your new potatoe video. Got disconnected and cant find it now.

    I am in east Tennessee. I learned by accident squash bugs like to congregate under random objects after leaving an overturned bucket in the garden. Now it doesn't exactly prevent them from doing damage but it does help you take out a good bit of the population. Just lay random wood boards, or tarp pieces, or buckets throughout your garden and they will gather there and you can kill them.

    So far since moving here(MO), I have found the best thing for the bugs is the traps. Also allowing a trap crop of that glorious(sarcastic tone here) pigweed/amaranth SAVED all my beans and pepper plants! The bugs seem to prefer those even before my precious veg plants. I discovered that by accident when I got busy and didn't get to weeding fast enough to pull them. So I lived with ugly weeds thru June, then I pulled most of them(thankfully they pull easy enough) I did, however, leave some and the bugs still flock to them first. Saving my Cucumbers, Beans, Peppers, and even Corn plants from a lot of bug pressure(I also got blessed with Pink Lady Beetles on my corn). Now I(as a notation) DID grow my sweet corn in the woven weed fabric and I must say, that sure is nice :) So I am happy to swap notes come end of the season on whether y'all will want to do it next year, or just keep things the way you did it this year.

    One thing that we do that works great is to use a water soluble organic fertilizer distributed with a dosing bottle connected to our drip system. We have manifolds so each Garden can receive a custom blend of whatever fertilizer, for example if I want to water my corn then I'm going to mix up a high-nitrogen blend. If I'm feeding carrots I can mix up a high phosphorus and potassium blend. You can customize your nutrient schedule with a dosing bottle in a drip system.

    Best way to deal with squash bugs in the mid west/south east is to obtain and or attract Trichopoda Pennipes , the young are parasites of the squash bug. You might be able to get some through your local ag extension possibly they are native and the adults like to eat pollen from dill , queen ann's lace , carrot flower etc.

    This may be silly, but if the squash bugs lay eggs on the leaves of your squash, then they're adult sized bugs. Perhaps using mosquito netting over the squash bed might work? They make mosquito netting in "tents" to fit over sleeping beds, it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to arrange a "fourposter" kind of arrangement over a single bed. And you'd be able to simply slip through the opening and work in there as needed. Just a thought. :)

    Your first harvest looks delicious! Where did you get the Jet Star seeds?
    Thank you so much for all the details of caring for your garden. You’ve answered my questions so well about feeding and schedules for feedings. And I’m going to try the oil and suds mixture, thank you thank you. Blessings as you harvest 😊

    Do you use wheat straw mulch on your tomatoes? As you go into the hotter dryer period of summer that will keep the ground cooler, and decrease the amount watering needed, as well as increase field production. As you probably know extreme heat will cause the plants to quit blooming, I've heard of gardeners placing a light colored awning over tomato plants to keep them cooler so that the plants will continue to bloom and set fruit, have you tried that method?

    Ah! How I miss fresh tomatoes!! I live in an apartment and we used to be allowed to have small container gardens. Unfortunately, new management came in and stopped all that. I always had 3 or 4 tomatoes plants planted. Every year I looked forward to fresh tomato sandwiches! I miss that so much. Those things they call tomatoes at the stores are horrible. Thanks for your awesome videos!!

    Good Morning you beautiful family.. PRAYER.. PRAYER PRAYER .. Pray works better than all .. STand over each row every morning and Pray Thankful Prayer over it.. Give Thanks for the Harvest that you see in your mind. Pray from your heart. Thankfully ask the insects to stay away from the crops.. see them leaving and praise them for it.. Praying over your harvest is not a new thing.. Pray over it Daily.. Standing there patiently and giving praise and Thankfulness. :)) hugs to you guys..

    A secret my grandpa taught me: Tomato plants will root all along the stem (that's what the hairs are on the stems). Plant them as deep as possible, all the way up to the first branch, even horizontally if you don't want to go deeper. They will grow many more roots this way and take up more water and nutrients, and give you a higher yield.

    Your garden looks great and y'all have given us wonderful ideas.. Super excited for next year to try some of these things.. In Georgia we get a lot of rain and it winds up eventually killing our garden mostly by August. Do you have any suggestions?

    Beautiful bounty! Now, I'm wondering how you spray all these different foliar products. Do you use the same sprayer or do you have several different ones? One thing about squash bugs and those types in general, is they love mulches! I notice you don't use that, but for those who do and have an extreme problem with them, make sure you burn the left overs at the end of the season to kill any surviving bugs and their eggs. I know, seems like a waste of good organic material.

    This was our first year to find armyworms, and oh my word!! There was a TON of them one 1 plants. we also found a tomato moth worm too. they are brown and more the size of a tomato horn worm. My son and his grandpa (my father in law) went catfishing and they found out that tomato horn worms make good fish bait.

    I wondered if you used help to fertilize and organically deter pests. This was great information. Will have to make notes for next year’s garden. Question...how is your square foot garden doing? I plan to do square foot gardening next spring.

    Hi, thanks for sharing your wealth of information! I was wondering, do you have a video showing how you put the fabric down? I'd love to see that, thinking about doing that this year, the weeds are just too much! We live in SW Missouri, outside of Lamar. And ironically, I grew up in Arizona! I lived in Payson, went to high school there, and then lived in Mesa for a while. Also had family in Phoenix and Tempe, I miss it down there! Especially Payson!

    Curious, what does the black tarp do for the garden? Also, I remember seeing a video of you guys saving your own seeds, how do you go about protecting cross pollination?
