Technically, chivalry was a set of rules for how knights should behave so it didn't apply to commoners. It was established by the Catholic Church to counter an endemic of violence. As such, the rules for how they treat women/ladies was to keep them from being violent. So... "Don't be rude to another man's wife or daughter and you won't have to worry about a fight."
Just saying, it *really* doesn't apply to "strong independent women".
Edit: just for clarification, it wasn't that they were necessarily worried about how they knights treated women. It was so other knights wouldn't get violent when annoyed at how their sister, mother, wife or other woman they cared about was treated. So, again, it *really* doesn't apply to "strong independent women who don't need no man" as they don't have a man who would be offended and violent on their behalf.
Also the more modern conception of ‘chivalry’ is awful and sexist anyway, have basic respect for all adults and adjust accordingly to respect or lack thereof given in turn.
@@WASDLeftClick I guess that depends on your definition of the "modern definition of 'chivalry'.". Everyone seems to have different definition of exactly what that means so I generally stick with what you say with generally trying to be nice until the other person annoys me.
Then again, I also assume that other people are idiots until proven otherwise as well so... There's that. In my defense, I'm usually right.

Unless there's a Romeo and Juliet law involved but there's still some criteria that need to be met in that case.
