Coming on to the light of day We got many moons that are deep at play So I keep an eye on the shadow smile To see what it has to say You and I both know Everything must go away Ah, what do you say? Spinning Knot that is on my heart Is like a bit of light in a touch of dark You got sneak attack from the zodiac But I see your fire spark Eat the breeze and go Blow by blow and go away Oh, what do you say? Yeah You don't know my mind You don't know my kind Dark necessities are part of my design And tell the world that I'm falling from the sky Dark necessities are part of my design Stumble down to the parking lot You got no time for the afterthought They're like ice cream for an astronaut Well, that's me looking for we Turn the corner and Find the world at your command Playing the hand Yeah You don't know my mind You don't know my kind Dark necessities are part of my design Tell the world that I'm falling from the sky Dark necessities are part of my design Do you want this love of mine? Darkness helps us all to shine Do you want it? Do you want it now? Do you want it all the time? But darkness helps us all to shine Do you want it? Do you want it now? Ah, pick you up like a paper back With the track record of a maniac So I move it in and we unpack It's the same as yesterday Any way we roll Everything must go away Oh, what do you say? Yeah You don't know my mind You don't know my kind Dark necessities are part of my design Tell the world that I'm falling from the sky and Dark necessities are part of my design
Both of the albums Josh was in the line-up have mixes that frustrate me greatly. Instrumentally, they have opposite problems - in IWY, the guitar was toned down in favour of heavy bass/drums, whereas for The Getaway, the guitar is more prominent, but the drum layering takes so much impact away from the overall balance. The biggest frustration with both is probably most emphasised here - how subtly and faded out Joshes backing vocals are. IMY sold me on how solid a vocalist he is, yet that + The Getaway (arguably more), he is mixed to the point of being inaudible. I heard most of The Getaway live + soundboard recorded before I heard the album cuts this year, and found myself bemused at how the impact between them is night and day. I think I understand why both albums were mixed the way they were, but it leaves me with a lingering disappointment that a lot of his flair was never put on display for those who didn't attend live shows, as I think there's a stark contrast.
The Longest Wave, We Turn Red, Sick Love, and Go Robot I think suffer some of the most of bad backing vocal mixing just for how buried they are. One thing I really dislike about The Getaway compared to IWY is the almost mono sound of every song so everything is squashed together and songs like Encore the guitar is buried under the vocals and bass, and Sick Love the guitar is also covered up by the drums, bass, and vocals. I'm hoping we get a remix of these songs at some point
@@_J_2023 As I'm aware, that's a quirk of Dangermouse's production style. I'm not well-versed in his work, but I recognise that over-compressed feel from the few I've heard. I think it could have worked for any other band, but not for what the Chili's offer. They're a band, when recording, you're trying to capture as much of the energy of as possible instead of adding it in post. I think Rubin's issue was the fact that IMY seems to be Flea's passion project in response to Stadium Arcadium, so there were other elements prioritised in the mix whilst trying to keep that raw feel. The Getaway definitely suffered most from a production aspect, which is a shame, since it seems to be the project Josh got to express himself a little more.
Coming on to the light of day
We got many moons that are deep at play
So I keep an eye on the shadow smile
To see what it has to say
You and I both know
Everything must go away
Ah, what do you say?
Spinning Knot that is on my heart
Is like a bit of light in a touch of dark You got sneak attack from the zodiac
But I see your fire spark
Eat the breeze and go
Blow by blow and go away
Oh, what do you say?
Yeah
You don't know my mind
You don't know my kind
Dark necessities are part of my design
And tell the world that I'm falling from the sky
Dark necessities are part of my design
Stumble down to the parking lot
You got no time for the afterthought
They're like ice cream for an astronaut
Well, that's me looking for we
Turn the corner and
Find the world at your command
Playing the hand
Yeah
You don't know my mind
You don't know my kind
Dark necessities are part of my design
Tell the world that I'm falling from the sky
Dark necessities are part of my design
Do you want this love of mine?
Darkness helps us all to shine
Do you want it? Do you want it now?
Do you want it all the time?
But darkness helps us all to shine
Do you want it? Do you want it now?
Ah, pick you up like a paper back With the track record of a maniac
So I move it in and we unpack
It's the same as yesterday
Any way we roll
Everything must go away
Oh, what do you say?
Yeah
You don't know my mind
You don't know my kind
Dark necessities are part of my design
Tell the world that I'm falling from the sky and
Dark necessities are part of my design
I just love this song!
