  • This is Paul Reade's Suite from the Victorian Kitchen Garden for Clarinet and piano (or harp) performed by Bojan Gutic and Dr. Amy Stewart, in PepsiCo Recital Hall at TCU.
Paul Reade was a British composer in the middle of the twentieth century. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and became famous for the music he wrote for TV shows. His fame mostly came from his themes to the Antiques Roadshow and The Victorian Kitchen Garden.
The Victorian Kitchen Garden was a British TV show that followed Harry Dodson as he recreated a Victorian-era garden. The Suite from the Victorian Kitchen Garden is a very short piece split into five movements, each shorter than two minutes. Each movement creates a different atmosphere in the garden. Reade simulates everything from spring and summer, to a mist settling over the garden. This theme music won the 1991 Ivor Novello award for best TV theme music.
    The movements are:
    I: Prelude
    II: Spring (2:40)
    III. Mists (3:30)
    IV: Exotica (5:22)
    V: Summer (6:22)

Paul Reade was an exceptional composer and how beautiful this piece is and wonderfully rendered. Listening to this, it's easy to feel that the world is ok.

What a masterpiece the music and television series was. It is still being shown now in 2017, thirty years after it first aired. What a testament.

I can feel the sunshine, smell the flowers and hear the buzzing bees when I listen to this. It's so evocative...

This brings me back to when summers were long and we would be in bare feet, run through corn fields, jump in the river to cool off, go fishing, watch nature and then go home and see the Clangers or Bagpuss before going to bed. Such things are gone now.

And clarinet students, what you're really hearing in Bojan's playing that sounds "silky" to you is his use of the air to connect all the notes, legato....but not just connect them, but to keep the phrases moving forward with the air. Lovely playing, Bojan!

I loved the BBCTV series and the music was a massively emotive part of it. This is a lovely recital of it, beautifully played by both artistes. Thank you.

Lovely music and beautifully played. Remember playing this for my Grade 4 exams many years ago.
Shame Summer was played at what felt like double speed. Feel it took a lot away from the calm and gentle nature of the melody. Still, lovely to hear it again!

This piece is so beautifully played! I am also a clarinetist too and I want so badly to play as wonderful and silky as you did in this video, Mr Bojan! Would you mind sharing some tips on how to do so? I'd appreciate it so much....

    • @BojanGutic
      @BojanGutic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you so much! The most important thing is doing a LOT of slow practice and practice with a metronome. Divide every piece into several smaller "chunks" and work on each with a metronome. Practice technical passages a LOT and very slowly until you can do them without thinking about it.
Also, listen to a lot of recordings and get the sound you want in your head. You have to know what you want to sound like and have a goal in mind when practicing. :)
