WOW 🤩 buddy what a fantastic tutorial on a timing belt replacement 👍🏻 I’ve just bought a 16 plate VW golf with 110 on it but I don’t know if the belts done 🙄 So this will help no end cheers Stevie 😎
Good video but one mistake you need to losen the cam shaft pulley and fuel pump pulley so they move in their slots before puting tension on the belt. Turn them clock wise as far as they go in slots before fitting belt that way when tensioning they move left. The way you done it you are only tensioning one side of belt. How this makes sense
Hey Agree mate. Do i need to losen that small bolt in camshaft too? For what reason is this small one good? Dont understand really and cant find a Guideline. After losen of camshaft pulley and pump pulley and small bolt i can install tension Roller and than beld right? Than rotate and Check again and if okay tighten it?
Hey I have a mk7 2.0 tdi match 2017 due timing belt this year , may attempt doing it after watching your video, wouldn't have thought even touching it but now have confidence after your clear instructions Gold star all round to yourself
Thanks for the great how-to, made the job really easy for me 👍 I just put on a Gates kit. Tension adjuster broke even with finger tight nut. I see Gates claim it is user fault, and they have investigated the problem and the nut has to be held still while setting tension. In my opinion it is a crap part made out of some sort of cast material and not real steel. Since it is my own car i just used some pliers on the broken part instead of the hex tool.
Thank you for this detailed video of this job! I was planning on letting a shop do this work but after watching your video, I am comfortable giving it a go myself! Nice work!
This video really helped me understand the procedure to do a cambelt change on my golf. Thank you! it has been a great help! Your new subscriber all the way from South Africa!
Just in the process of doing this and I figured I'd warn people that the newer gates tensioners are very weak. Mine snapped at the hex key part with minimal warning while trying to tension. I tried replicating the circumstances with the original tensioner (also gates) and I had to put in a LOT of force too get it to break. Bought a replacement from VW made by litens which looks to be a much beefier design. Just FYI for anyone doing this.
Thank you Sir for the fine set of instructions! I think I just had an idler seize but the belt is still OK. Going to give this a go in the driveway, a little fresh air and some sun should get this along nicely, now that I know what Im doing here. Local quotes of 1800-3000 USD to do this in shop.. needless to say I owe you one.
Awesome, comprehensive video, thank you so much for taking the time to a) shoot and talk through the steps, and b) take the time to edit/upload it. You have saved me a lot of time and effort, by being able to refer back to this, at certain important 'reference' points. Top bloke! 👍😎

mega! glad you got it sorted 👍 thanks for the update, always nice to get some feedback on my videos 😃. that top cover can be bloody awkward if you haven't done one before! nice and snug in the back corner isn't it!😅
Thanks for sharing, thinking of giving this a go. I'll watch a few more times then decide. 👍🏻 My biggest concern is supporting the engine when taking the mount off. Electrician who likes to give most things ago myself. 🚗
The correct way To time/tension these correctly the cam and fuel pump pully should be lossened before tensionong the belt. There is a TPI for gates tensioners fitted to these engines going faulty. Best to stick with genuine kits or INA kits that use the litenes tensioner. Bleeding the system should be done with diagnostic program like ODIS. Have had to bleed loads of systems After other garages or diy mechanics just fill up the coolant with out correctly bleeding the sytem. They are normally ok for a week or two then just pressure up and chuck coolant out if not bleed with diagnostics.
Excellent video, very well detailed. The workmanship is the same at 2.0L and 1.6 tdi. The water pump, it is other than what was on the car. I mean, it's no longer electric but classic. I greet you from Ro 👍
@@diydaly Can you answer the question? The workmanship is the same in both 1.6 and 2 motors. 0l? Did you put the water pump, classic? The electric one you eliminated? do not give errors does not heat up. Ms👍
@@nicolaeconstantin4 yes exactly the same.. I fitted the non electric pump , it doesn’t throw up any errors .. the solenoid fits into a blank so the solenoid is effectively still working but doesn’t do anything.. thus doesn’t throw up any errors 👍
@@diydaly Hi there, I really appreciate this as my son has just bought a 13 plate Mk 7 Golf and it appears that there is no record of a timing belt ever been done, even with a fully stamped book..... 😕 So, the water pump, did you replace the super duper one ( disabling contact thingy) with a "normal" one? loved the video .. not doing the job myself going to local VW garage . just wanted to see what is involved . my main worry is garage taking shortcuts and not replacing the pump or other parts to safe time and money ..
Thanks, great job on the video and also on all the reference information for parts, tools and torques. Note: The amazon tool kit is currently not available and the EBay kit cannot be shipped to the USA, but that is not your fault... There are a few more items you did not show or write down? -- 1. The change interval for the belt/water pump. 2. the book value time for the entire job. Many repair shops overcharge on the parts (full retail and administration fee... BIG profit here) and the time (more unearned profit). With this information you can calculate the actual cost of the job. The book value is a not-to-exceed number for BELOW average mechanics so that the customer is not over-charged on time. The automotive industry has taken this as the time charging value for every job even if they spent less actual time on the job. This type of behavior is unethical for professionals such as lawyers and engineers. Imagine if your lawyer charged you more billing time than they actually spent! (Reference: book/movie "The Firm" The firm overcharged and sent invoices/bills to their clients in the US mail making their billing mail fraud!)
Your videos are very well presented, easy to follow your method...if you ever do come across replacing tdi injector on PD engine please post a video...thanks
This time belt is like new. I think that these are strong and solid materials that can cover over 200,000 km. no problems. only some external influence or malfunction can damage and break it. and that can happen with the new belt you put on yesterday.
Beautiful. I almost feel that I could do it myself. Almost. Another video said the engine mount bolts are torqued to their yield point, and must be replaced.
I miss the sense of crank aretation tool (point with marker should be enough) because the teeths on the belt won't let you make it wrong if the cam and IP timing is fixed with the tool... On older engines with variable cam (IP) timing pulley make the crank aretation tool sense. Just my point of view... Very good manual! Thank you for sharing!
Top job...go to for timing belt water pump kits install on you tube...jus a small tip there is a notch on the back of the crank pulley to line up with the mark OT on the plastic cover to get no.1 into tcd...gets her in position b4 locking her up...ya kno yerself👍n again great detailed job you did...doing the camera work puts more time into the job...fair play👌

Brilliant instructional video. My garage concerned the new water pump on a MK 7 1.6tdi had to be linked via software to the car? Is that the case? They don't think they can do the installation because of that.

Changed the timing belt and tensioner thanks to your video. Alway wanted to do this on my own. But I’ve noticed the new tensioner Pointer / Arrow vibrates slightly / shakes slightly when the engine is running - is this normal ? Or have I over-tightened it. Thanks
Awesome video! Watched all of it from start to finish. One question - at 48:38 when you start the engine, there is quite noticeable squeaking noise coming from the timing belt area. Sounds like the new rollers could be making it, as they are spinning round. Is this normal at all? I have the same noise on my VW Golf. If it's not the rollers, then what could it be? Thanks.

WOW 🤩 buddy what a fantastic tutorial on a timing belt replacement 👍🏻 I’ve just bought a 16 plate VW golf with 110 on it but I don’t know if the belts done 🙄 So this will help no end cheers Stevie 😎
Nice one, thanks for the comments 👍 always nice to hear some positive feedback 😁👌👍
Top video DIYDALY! By far the best VAG 2.0tdi timing belt change I've seen. Thanks so much
Thanks! Always nice to hear such positive feedback.. makes it all worth while 👍👍
Good video but one mistake you need to losen the cam shaft pulley and fuel pump pulley so they move in their slots before puting tension on the belt. Turn them clock wise as far as they go in slots before fitting belt that way when tensioning they move left. The way you done it you are only tensioning one side of belt. How this makes sense
Hey
Agree mate.
Just leave them on factory settings.
Hey I have a mk7 2.0 tdi match 2017 due timing belt this year , may attempt doing it after watching your video, wouldn't have thought even touching it but now have confidence after your clear instructions Gold star all round to yourself
Thanks for the comments , much appreciated as a small YT channel 😁 glad to help 👌👍
Thanks for the great how-to, made the job really easy for me 👍
I just put on a Gates kit.
Thankyou very much 👍😁 tips much appreciated!
You guys are Phenomenal!! Bar none, the best documented how-to I have seen! This will help when I do my 2015 TDI, here across the Pond.
Thanks very much for the comments! much appreciated as a small YT channel 👍👌😃
Thank you for this detailed video of this job! I was planning on letting a shop do this work but after watching your video, I am comfortable giving it a go myself! Nice work!
You are welcome!
This video really helped me understand the procedure to do a cambelt change on my golf. Thank you! it has been a great help! Your new subscriber all the way from South Africa!
Nice one, always nice to hear some positive feedback 😃 thanks 👍👍
Just in the process of doing this and I figured I'd warn people that the newer gates tensioners are very weak. Mine snapped at the hex key part with minimal warning while trying to tension. I tried replicating the circumstances with the original tensioner (also gates) and I had to put in a LOT of force too get it to break. Bought a replacement from VW made by litens which looks to be a much beefier design. Just FYI for anyone doing this.
Thanks for the info
Thank you Sir for the fine set of instructions! I think I just had an idler seize but the belt is still OK. Going to give this a go in the driveway, a little fresh air and some sun should get this along nicely, now that I know what Im doing here. Local quotes of 1800-3000 USD to do this in shop.. needless to say I owe you one.
Nice one , glad it will help👍👍 thanks for the comment
Did this exact procedure on a Scirocco r line worked a treat saved my son a few Bob .. thanks great tutorial
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment , much appreciated 👍👌
Awesome, comprehensive video, thank you so much for taking the time to a) shoot and talk through the steps, and b) take the time to edit/upload it. You have saved me a lot of time and effort, by being able to refer back to this, at certain important 'reference' points. Top bloke! 👍😎
Nice one , thanks for the comments! Always nice to hear positive feedback 👍👍
What an absolute legend, massive help and saved me a fair amount of money
👍
Hi 👋, really a great video, many thanks 👍
First video on these engines where camshaft and pump bolts are not loosen. Even if the official procedure says to loose those bolts, I feel more confortable with your method 🙂
Really dislike things moving even a little bit, when dealing with timing, lol 😁
A new subscriber 👍
Thanks for the comment, yeah I don't like to alter them if I don't need to.. I used to do it all the time on the older ones but ive never had the need to on these later ones 👍👌
A really well videoed cambelt change with great description of what was being done. I would like to think that the VW main agent will do mine as well as this tomorrow! - I am too old to do these myself now!
👍👍 thanks for the comments , much appreciated
Thanks for this! Just followed this guide for my 2017 Seat Leon. Running sweetly!
👍👍 nice one , glad to help 👌
Excellent video, excellently put together. 👌👍
First time doing timing belt & water pump on 2019 Skoda Karoq. Your video was brilliant help and could double n triple check the hard steps you'd done.
I would 100% recommend this video and your others to people.
Thanks again 👍
Thanks for the comment Fraser! Much appreciated 👌always nice to hear some feedback 👍👍
Out of All the cars ive done this was the worst of Them super usefull vid thanks a lot
Glad it helped 👍👍
Thank you for the video, I'm a former Mercedes tech but I've never worked on any timing belts or VW before. The video was clear and easy to follow. This weekend....I'm going to get my hands dirty....LOL
By the way, I've got all the tools needed.
P.S. The two people who gave it thumbs down.....why? Do they think they can do this better? or faster?
Nice one , thanks for the comment 😁 much appreciated .. Yeah there not bad , I’m sure you’ll suss it out 👍 I know can’t please everyone i spose 🤣
@@diydaly I did it. It was a piece of cake. It took me more time taking out the covers and the engine mount than do the actual job. Everything that you mentioned in the video was right there and true..
mega! glad you got it sorted 👍 thanks for the update, always nice to get some feedback on my videos 😃. that top cover can be bloody awkward if you haven't done one before! nice and snug in the back corner isn't it!😅
Thank you for this! Did my cambelt on my 2014 seat Leon FR with this guide. Really top quality video!!! Legend
Great to hear! thanks for the comment.. much appreciated 😃
Great video thanks, by far the best i have watched for doing this job, clear and concise.
👍 thanks mate
Thanks for sharing, thinking of giving this a go. I'll watch a few more times then decide. 👍🏻 My biggest concern is supporting the engine when taking the mount off. Electrician who likes to give most things ago myself. 🚗
I’m sure you’d manage mate , just a hack under the sump will do 👍
Great tutorial!!! - got one with accident damage so slightly more things to replace 👌 keep up the sterling work 👍👍👍
Nice one, glad to help.. thanks for the comment 👍👌😃
Once again - great video - fully explained in detail. Use your all the time for my transit custom and how my Audi A3 2.0 TDI
Thanks! 👍 , nice to hear! Makes it all worth while 👌
i never saw a video like that you explained every thing very deeply thankyou so much
You're most welcome, thanks for the comment
Thanks for making this guide, it proved really helpful while doing the same job today on my Seat Leon FR TDI. Really appreciate it 👍
Thanks ! Glad to help 👍
Glad you liked it , thanks for the comments! Much appreciated 😁👌
@@diydaly
Hi there, I really appreciate this as my son has just bought a 13 plate Mk 7 Golf and it appears that there is no record of a timing belt ever been done, even with a fully stamped book..... 😕
So, the water pump, did you replace the super duper one ( disabling contact thingy) with a "normal" one?
Thanks! 👍
@@andystone5487 yeah I prefer to fit the standard style (non electric )
Cheers for this video. Followed it to a t and all went well. Keeping slack on the left and putting the idler on afterwards 👍
nice one, Glad it helped! thanks for the comment 👍
I commend you on your very profession worksmanship, very informative video indeed, keep up your excellent tutorial videos. Much appreciated indeed. Regards Chris from Gateshead.😊
Thank you very much! Your comment is much appreciated! Makes all the hard work worth while!
loved the video .. not doing the job myself going to local VW garage . just wanted to see what is involved . my main worry is garage taking shortcuts and not replacing the pump or other parts to safe time and money ..
👍 thanks , I’m sure they will fit the full kit if they are decent mate
Thanks for the comments / info Andrew 👍
Very nice! I just developed a coolant leak that I suspect is the water pump. This should help me get at it.
Glad to help , thanks for the comment 👌👍
Thanks a bunch for the great video and detailed instructions. Was able to knock mine out today without any issues.
Nice one , glad it will help mate 👍👍
Your videos are very well presented, easy to follow your method...if you ever do come across replacing tdi injector on PD engine please post a video...thanks

Just done this job on an Audi A5 and was shocked to see they have gone from 3 bolts to 1 on the camshaft sprocket
Wish u was my personal mechanic 💯 top quality work there. 👏
Thanks! 👍👌
This time belt is like new. I think that these are strong and solid materials that can cover over 200,000 km. no problems. only some external influence or malfunction can damage and break it. and that can happen with the new belt you put on yesterday.
Thanks for the comment
Excellent, very descriptive and thorough video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for the comment
BRILLIANT Description You make it look SOooo Easy MANY THANKS
Ha is Steve! Comments always appreciated 👍👍
Thanks for this, have a 2013 Tiguan to do in the near future, very helpful video.
👍 I’ve just done one on a 2012 Tiguan.. will be uploading it this week hopefully 👌
Beautiful. I almost feel that I could do it myself. Almost.
Another video said the engine mount bolts are torqued to their yield point, and must be replaced.
👍👍 thanks , I can be recommended to replace the bolts but I’ve never replaced them tbh and never had an issue
@@diydaly Thanks. How did you torque them? Seems its very high and you would need a very long bar.
@@paulwary normal 1/2 torque wrentch will do them fine , it wouldn’t be that high a torque
Thanks for the very detailed video; it helps me a lot.
nice one, thanks thanks for the comment 👍👌
Thank you very much for making this video. Very clear video and detailed explanation. Very similar engine to my 2015 Passat B8.
Thanks for the comment , much appreciated .. glad to help 👌👍
Is the timing tool kit also works for the 2015 TDI Passat ?
I miss the sense of crank aretation tool (point with marker should be enough) because the teeths on the belt won't let you make it wrong if the cam and IP timing is fixed with the tool... On older engines with variable cam (IP) timing pulley make the crank aretation tool sense. Just my point of view...
Very good manual! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks 👍👍
Best timing belt video I’ve ever watched, perfect pal 👍
One quick question, what water pump would I need for 2014 Octavia 2.0 tdi DSG
👍👍 thanks! Can vary but I’d go for a gates kit with the bypass water pump ..
👍👍 thanks for the comments mate , much appreciated 🙌

No problem 👍 thanks for the comment 👌
VERY detailed, very informative, thank you so much for this.

Amazing video thank you so much. Not as daunting as I thought it’s going to be. Hoping this will be the same as my Mk2 Tiguan, as there are no videos for that on here yet.

Very nicely explained and videoed with details useful hints included for the benefit of all, well done and all the best, take care.
Thank you Gerard, your comments are much appreciated 👍👌
Brilliant instructional video. My garage concerned the new water pump on a MK 7 1.6tdi had to be linked via software to the car? Is that the case? They don't think they can do the installation because of that.
thanks! no coding or anything needed mate, its just plug and play 👍👍
Great info I always look on here if it’s a belt i have not done before what do you think is realistic time to do these belts
Thanks 👍👍 if you give yourself 4 hours will be plenty
Fantastic video subscribed 👍 do you know if you have to remove the top part of the cambelt cover to be able to get the rocker cover off?
I’m not 100% sure but I think you do
Absolute legend for doing this, thank you very much.

@@diydaly can I ask do you replace the studs that the tensioner and idler sit on? Read some earlier ones failed due to over torquing the nuts. Mines a 2016 passat with a dfea engine. Cheers.
@@ashley96678 yeah there was an issue with the earlier ones.. ive not had to replace any on this later type.. as long as they are torqued up ok you wont have any issues 👍
I've got a 2015 tdi passat sel sedan with 200k in it. I got 6000 in it now. Is it worth the water pump and timing chain?
Very helpful and thorough video, thank you very much!
Thanks for the comment , feedback if much appreciated 👍👌
Hi DIYDaly, i have my Golf CRBC engine with 136k miles on it. I had the timing belt, water pump, idlers and tensioner replaced in 2019 at 72k miles. What mileage should i be looking at to replace it again? I drive 24k miles a year mainly on motorway
Hi mate the intervals are every 5 years or 140,000 miles .. which ever comes first 👍
Did you tried to remove the screw behind the engine mount and remove the cover without removing the engine mount? Kinda looks like it could go without the faff
Probly looks harder that it is , I don’t remember it being too hard 👍
Excellently explained 👌
Thanks 👍

Changed the timing belt and tensioner thanks to your video. Alway wanted to do this on my own.
But I’ve noticed the new tensioner Pointer / Arrow vibrates slightly / shakes slightly when the engine is running - is this normal ? Or have I over-tightened it. Thanks
Yeah that’s quite normal mate , glad it helped 👍👍
Awesome video! Watched all of it from start to finish. One question - at 48:38 when you start the engine, there is quite noticeable squeaking noise coming from the timing belt area. Sounds like the new rollers could be making it, as they are spinning round. Is this normal at all? I have the same noise on my VW Golf. If it's not the rollers, then what could it be? Thanks.
I think that was just a little belt squeak from some coolant on it tbh
Nice video man, this will help alot with changing mine in the future.
Glad to help , thanks for the comment 😁👍
