Hannelore Schmatz: The first WOMAN who died on Everest

- In October 1979, Gerhard Schmatz and Hannelore Schmatz from West Germany, climbed Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. They were the first couple to set foot atop Everest.
However, tragedy struck when Hannelore Schmatz died while descending the mountain. In addition, Ray Genet, a mountain guide from the US, also died on the way down to base camp.
This is their story of triumph and tragedy on Everest !

Soooo sad and I always feel so sorry for the sherpas too, many who have lost their lives trying to assist climbers.
Not assisting mate. They’re dying just so fake mountaineers can walk up Everest using routes and ropes created by the Sherpas. They do the dangerous work just so selfish braggarts can get a summit picture to boast about. It’s disgusting to me. These braggarts aren’t mountain lovers. They pollute and litter these mountains. They should be content with trekking the area and leave the real mountaineers to climb.
It is a job like any other job
They are paid very very well and know the risk.
They are not paid very well and no it is not a normal job. Sherpas have no choice to choose another job. The companies get all the money. The sherpas get the danger.
@@Heart2HeartBooks know they aren’t paid “very well” 3 grand for a trip is not good pay. They pack all the crap / do all the ropes/ clean up the trash after- …. No they aren’t paid well. A Sherpa may make 10 grand in a season and pass through the ice falls 40-60 times.
I’d like to see you do it for that pay. Americans make that in 3 months working at McDonald’s.

Whenever you hear the words "the sherpas recommended....but...", it is never going to end well I'm not sure this qualifies as an accident. They decided to bioactive in the death zone amd went along with the expertise of an expert on a different mountain instead of an expert on Everest.

One of my wife's former coworkers disappeared on Mt. McKinley over 30 years ago. We happen to learn of that when his mother wrote an article in the Washington Post. She was a grief counselor, and the point of the article was about when a grief counselor has to deal with personal grief herself.
As beck weather said. "I have lived within profound depression my whole life. The pain of climbing, the exhaustion is what takes me apart from my thoughts" Its some peoples way of coping with so much internal pail. Its their way of relieving themselves from that pain. And i can relate to that. Its my main purpose of mountaineering. It takes me apart from everything. And it becomes some peoples only free space.

You are on a suicide mission. I turned around 100' below Long's Peak. It was @ my self appointed turn time. Ppl passed me on my way down. A bad storm blew in. NPS recovered their bodies later. 2 yrs later I conquered the bitch!! We climb the mountain on its time and if you need mountains to make you feel worthy? You climb for the wrong reasons. I WILL NOT CLIMB WITH PPL WHO HAVE THAT ATTITUDE!! WHO HAVE TO TAKE STUPID RISKS!! YOU WILL GET PPL KILLED. Work out your mental issues with a psychiatrist. Before you go to climb a mountain. Or climb alone and DIE!!

I love watching these stories about mount everest, like the movie Everest when Rob Hall and others lost there lifes in 1996..
But i hate the cold and climbing mountains😁, i just stick to summer weather and riding motorcycles, but thanks for the story brother.

In a multi climber expedition where everyone reaches the summit, if anyone does not make it back I would never consider to be a success.
You'd think that's the point . But to most of them, they'll walk riggt past you.
So happy that Hannelore has this video to tell her story which is told with great dignity & respect. Beautiful Hannelore had grit, courage & determination which made her one of the first great lady mountaineers. May she forever rest peacefully at the blessed feet of the spectacular Kangshung. xx

Climbers should not ever risk their lives attempting to bring a body down from high altitude.
The dead knew the risks and I couldn't think of a better resting place.
If the body is in full view, then if possible, then cover it with rocks.

I only feel sorry for the sherpa who stayed with her and the sherpas who died while trying to retrieve her body.
Why hire a Sherpa just to not take the advice they give. Those dudes told me to tap out for the day, I’m gone fast as my frozen self would take me. Their job is to try to help keep you alive.

How tragic that Hannelore got pissed at the advice that conditions were very poor so she should abandon her attempt.
Her husband had to then live with the regret of not being more insistent.

I've always found it strange regarding the Infamous Photo of Hannelore's Remains as NOBODY seems to have claimed to have taken that photo (not to mention given an exact date to when it was taken), and (as far as I know) it only First appeared around 2009 in a You Tube Video that is now deleted
I know it's her though unlike most claimed "identified" bodies, as she is wearing Identical Blue Pants and Red Boots to the photos of her taken while still alive ascending the mountain

She did not fell asleep. She had her eyes open after she died. There are many witnesses to confirm that.

I know the story and i have seen many photos of her, i don't know why you don't put a photo of her dead body but maybe you didn't because it's so tragic to many of people!!!

Camp 4 is still in the death zone. She was already out of oxygen... 100 m is a far way in the death zone.
It's called the death zone for many reasons, one being that when climbers become real weak and especially if they're out of oxygen, their minds become weak and they give up.

Her body was certainly one of the grisliest for long time before it got pushed over the ledge out of sight.
The number of people who are willing to die FOR A LARGE ROCK Formation is astounding to me. If a human needs an oxygen tank in order to survive that environment....that's your first CLUE that you have no business being there. Are they trying to prove that they're super human....or not human??? It's the highest form of stupid. These people have no rational reasoning IMO. I'm always so sad to see another person give their life to a darn rock formation. Some people don't feel alive unless they're at risk of dying. Like so many people say....well "she DIED doing what she loved". She could have loved something less deadly.....guess not. You can't fix stupid I guess.... You can only bury it later. What a tragic waste.
What is the point of living if we can’t do what we love? These people love climbing mountains. I am glad that there are risk takers and adventure seekers in the world! I just prefer to live through them by watching and reading their stories while I’m safe and warm on my couch.

You need mechanical cabin air pressurization to fly in an airplane at 30,000+ feet.

Wow - misinformation is rife on TH-cam! Rainbow Valley is located just below Everest's NORTHERN RIDGE and just above 8,000 metres ON THE NORTHERN ROUTE - and NOT on the South-East Ridge where Hannelore Schmatz body was located for many years at 8,290 metres on the SOUTH-EAST RIDGE! (as stated at 15:55) Why does it matter? Because people who've never even set foot on the mountain rely on content creators like you to know what you're talking about, and to get it right.

That’s the thing. It is really not a bad way to die. Painless and you are out of it. But the pain they endured climbing and descending was over by the time she sat down.😢

I think McKinley is higher if measured from base to top than Everest so there is actually more climbing. I know it is not as high above sea level though.
WINGSUIT FROM EVEREST
Most of the deaths that happen on the 8K+ height mountains happen on the way down. In context consider a wingsuit/ram-air parachute descent. One brave soul has already accomplished this - but that was from 24,000 feet - not quite the top. The density of the air on 8K+ peaks does not provide sufficient lift for a wingsuit. Instead the winds will slam you into the mountain's rocky face - killing you.
HIMARS is an artillery rocket designed to locate its target through geopositioning. A mini-version strapped to the back could fire a summiter who is wearing a wingsuit, off the peak of Everest towards the very center of the valley below dropping the summiter now descending thousands of feet downwards in seconds over terrain that had taken hours and days to climb. After the ignition shuts down at a much lower altitude where the air is thicker, the mini-HIMARS is dropped and the wingsuited descender speads the wings of the wingsuit and glides to still lower altitudes.
The glide continues over the Khumbu icefall, and further into the valley. Miles and miles of the mountain's base passes below. The target, a hotel at the base of Everest wherethe grass is green, awaits. It is summer and the air is warmer at this altitude. The descender opens the chute and targets in to the great green lawn. The hotel guests are gathered for cocktails in evening dress at sunset.
End of the Quest: Landing, less than an hour after summiting Everest, the summiter zips out of his wingsuit. He is has been wearing a tuxedo underneath. Taking a seat at the central table, the sommelier brings a chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon (sponsors choice) and a glass saluting the applauding awe-struck guests who begin to surround the summiter. Noting the champagne is not quite cold enough to meet expectations, brought from the wingsuit is a container of ice harvested from the Everest summit to fill the ice bucket. The summiter toasts the mighty Everest that dominates the surrounding Himalayas as the sun sets.
I dunno, if given a choice, I would choose a heated waterslide. If that's not feasible, maybe one of those huge rubber balls you get inside of...
I'd rather snowboard myself down the slope, I'd dump my backpack/ have the Sherpa to transport it down

Woman are not built like men and they have, in average, a more difficult time tackling high altitude. Just as most people have difficult time in high altitude compared to sherpas.
