      It's quite fascinating actually, the Sherpa/Tibetans have, through their centuries-long isolation in these harsh environments, developed a genetic setup that makes them unique even among mountain people and makes them perfectly equipped for very high altitudes.
      When you're high up, usually your body (more specifically your bone marrow) produces more red blood cells, thus maximizing your oxygen intake/oxygen distribution in your body, but also thickening your blood and raising the risk for an embolism, this is the case for people in the Andes for example who often suffer from chronic altitude sickness.
      The Sherpa however don't just have more red blood cells, but also more plasma, which in turn prevents the thickening of their blood. They also have genes that prevent an immediate stimulation of red blood cell production when being confronted with lower oxygen levels, which also prevents their blood from thickening. Studies have also shown that a small percentage of people from lower regions have some of these genetic mutations as well, which might be part of the reason why some "lowlanders" seem to be able to deal with high altitudes better than others.

    As a Bulgarian I don't remember Atanas's death being in the media or maybe it got lost in the pandemic news. I read about him and he seemed to be very well-educated in agriculture and sadly had a son born in 2009. I don't understand how a parent can risk leaving their child an orphan, it is incredibly sad and reckless. Another incredibly accomplished Bulgarian climber Boyan Petrov also lost his life a few years back.

    While I would say that these deaths are incredibly sad, I think we should reserve "tragic" for the deaths of people who don't climb 8,000-meter peaks. I'm sure it seems a tragedy for their loved ones, but these people went on horribly dangerous adventures knowing the risks. It was those who loved and valued them who picked up the heart-shattering tab.

    • @jellybean7253
      @jellybean7253 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have an alternative thought... In my world, the only deaths that aren't tragic are those of people that have taken a life. The mere fact that you say that it is a tragedy for their families is admitting that it is tragic for someone, just not for you. Can you imagine what our lives would be like with out the brave people that are willing to take chances? JMHO

      @@jellybean7253 Inherent in that risk is that climbing partners and sherpas may be at risk for those same people taking chances. Quite a number of sherpas and others have died trying to save some "brave people's" asses.

      @@dana102083 Yes, crazy drivers are taking risks which definitely affect others. Ok... I gave it a try but I can not watch this channel with all the mistakes made by narrator. In 1st story "he climbed solo and reached the summit an hour before sunrise", but then "his brother raced to catch up with him and met him before summit so they made summit together a few hours before sunset". I caught several other mistakes in 1st story. I just now started watching the 2nd story but 2 seconds into it when it says she "climbed all 9,000 meter peaks..." omg... there are NO 9,000 METER PEAKS! YOU LITERALLY JUST TALKED ABOUT EVERST BEING HIGHEST PEAK AT 8,700'ish meters! How do you make that mistake unless you just don't care, don't put any time into actually researching these stories you bring to TH-cam. And since I enjoy real documentary type channels here, I will not be subscribing or ever watching this one again. If I can't trust the source and trust the information they are putting out, that is a big, bright red deal-breaker for me.

      Yeah I noticed that too, especially because I'm quite familiar with the story. Many parts of these events are disputed but even the ones that aren't were wrong here. For example, Reinhold didn't leave by himself because he wanted to ascend alone in secret but because of a miscommunication through coloured flares that were supposed to indicate a good or bad weather forecast to the people in the higher camps, because they didn't have a radio.
