      We were blown away by how many different kinds of pumpkins and gourds that they had on display. It was amazing. We will be visiting different areas in the Black Forest once the leaves start to change and make another video about it. ☺️

    Hahaha…. I liked your American approach towards explaining Schorle 😅 calling it: water mixed with concentrated juice…. :-)
    Actually my German/Baden-Württemberg explanation would be: (just normal) juice diluted with water 😂 …. Guess, in order to make some savings… be it on the more valuable juice or on calories… 😅😅

    I am from Hamburg and lived in Mainz for some years. I also visited the baroque gardens in Ludwigsburg but never heared of the pumpkin 🎃 festival. I researched and learned that in 2000 it took place for the first time, it‘s amazing to see that you can not only rely on old traditions but also can create new ones that make a difference. Thank you for this video, it was educational and beautiful to watch.

    You guys might want to check out the farmers in the region, i grew up in Freiburg and in the area and smaller villages around the city there where often a lot of opportunities to go on fields and pick your stuff, farmers used to do that as a form of direct marketing.
    Also in the fall there are a lot of Weinfeste and "Hock"s and at those events you might even find a labyrinth. But it should definitely push your fall mood and experience further.
    Another point is, you might research "Strauße Wirtschaften" as those are a special thing to that southern Schwarzwald region. Farms get a licence to cook and process their homegrown food and sell it just like a restaurant twice a year in spring and fall for a few weeks. Sometimes you end up sitting in a living room with a lot of different people and you are eating what the son and dad brought home from the field and mom and grandma cooked. Like this you can find very authentic food if you havent experienced that before.

    Interesting report on the German Pumpkin Festival. A tip to you: drive out into the villages and see regional autumn festivals! When the sun is shining and all the deciduous trees discolour their leaves, that's nice anyway!

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! The leaves are just starting to turn. I think in a couple of weeks the Black Forest will be quite colorful and we will definitely have to make a video.

    Hi Black Forest Family. I just found out, that I was on 21st of September last year at the same location. Walked through the same pumpkin exhibition and had the same experience. That was my first visit in Ludwigsburg too. Never been there before, although I am a german native :) and living in Albstadt (Baden-Württemberg too). I´m recently watching your videos, because I find it interesting to see my country through a foreigners eye. Things that are totally normal to oneself, because you grown up with them, can look weird or remarkable to a person who is not accustomed to it.
    Your Videos are nicely made and entertaining.
    Greetings

    Get yourself a huge orange pumpkin. Cut the flesh into cubes, about 3/4 of an inch long at its edges. Be careful that you cut all of the light-coloured skin off. It is too hard and tasteless.Bring water and vinegar (equal parts) to a boil and pour the mix over the cubes. Let them soaked in the liquid for a day. A plate with a weight on top helps to get the pumpkin cubes down. Next day take the pumpkin cubes out and bring the liquid to a boil again, add preserving sugar and spices like cloves and a little ginger. Put the pumpkin cubes in and let it all boil till the cubes get deep orange and a bit "glassy". Test with a fork when they are soft. Then fill them into sterile jars, pour enough liquid over them to exclude any air and close the lids. Sweet-sour pumpkins of this kind last for some years. They are an excellent side-dish for roasts. We calculate 250 ml of water and 250 ml of vinegar plus 750 g of sugar per one kg of pumpkin flesh.

    The Americans brought the pumpkin tradition with them, but the local ones also know what to offer.
    But there is a difference, real Germans don't have Halloween, that is Reformation Day in memory of Martin Luther.

    Interesting. Never seen pumpkin pie in Germany before. I usually have to make it myself. How was it „spiced“? There are corn mazes in many places in Germany.

    • @grandmak.

      that's right. Pumpkin spice in the US usually contains what we use for baking Lebkuchen : cinnamon , clove etc.

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Us too! When we saw "American Pie" on the menu we surely had to give it a shot. The pie we tasted was more "light" on the spices, compared to a traditional pumpkin pie and the texture was drier. Not bad overall.
      Do you ever shop at myamericanmarket.com ? This time of year they always have the staples to make an American pie (albeit with a significant markup). But it is good in a pinch if you don't have a specific ingredient on hand.

    Self made pumpkin soup is one of the best soups for cold and rainy evenings!
    Btw. at 6:36 the kid says "entsetzlich" (horrific) and not "tatsächlich" (really). Hard to hear the difference due to the audio quality. And it continues with "Damit ich dich besser fressen kann!" (So I can eat you better!). ;)
    PS.: Just came back from a short trip to Wolfach / Bad Schrapenau in the Black Forest. Five days hiking with my wife and our dog. We stayed in one of the many old Schwarzwald farms with cats, dogs, chickens, deers, donkeys, horses, ... :)

    On my vue: US has not to define the worldwide standard of pumpkin pies. The use of pumpkins in german (european) cuisine is some kind of a creolisation of cultures as we did it with potatos, chilies ...

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Totally! Since living in Germany we've had the pleasure of tasting so many different recipes that use Pumpkins. It has been such a fun journey trying new foods. But in this particular instance, the pie was advertised by the chef as "American Pie" so we thought we should give it a go and taste test for comparison. Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks so much for sharing your experiences. Cheers! ❤️

    Americans are not the standard measure of things, like other countries are allowed to have their own varieties and ways of making food and stuff XD
