Loon call

  • PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. I found him "crash landed" in the parking lot at work. Something must have scared him out of the water and since it was night he must have thought our lot was water and attempted to land. I called for a wildlife marshal however there wasn't one on duty since it was after midnight and the police said to just leave it outside.I didn't want to just leave leave him paying in the parking lot so I did some research and apparently loons cannot walk very well (if at all), he did attempt to move his legs to get away but couldn't stand up to move. He tried flying away but didn't get far and "crashed" back in the lot. His foot was bleeding a bit from scraping on the asphalt but it stopped on its own. I released him in a nearby creek and he happily floated away, the creek he was released in was adequate for him to survive in and take off in flight when he wanted. This bird was not tortured in anyway and I took the opportunity to film him while I waited for the police to arrive.

    Scenarios like this happen quite a bit during the summer here in the U.K. - after it rains, the sunlight shining off surface water on tarmac can make roads look like stretches of water to birds in flight, and so it’s not unheard of to see large water birds such as swans come in to land, then get into difficulty getting back into the air since they don’t have enough space to gather the speed required.

    • @Cherrycreamsoda1

      I’ve seen swans try to walk on ice to get across the water and the poor things can barely get by - the dominant ones end up fighting each other for ‘water space’

    Such a beautiful bird. The loon might have "crash landed" and got separated from it's partner or migratory flock. It seems very confused to not hear a response back from it's other loon(s). Poor Lil guy. I hope they managed to find them again. Thank you for taking the time out of your day/night to look after it! Loons are very, very vulnerable on land (because of their dense bones / inexperience to walk properly with their huge feet) and easy, EASY prey for any predators in the area (Even distracted humans! Since it was stranded in a parking lot, it could have easily been run over by a car 💔) Bless your heart, you did all you could for it. (And the right thing!) Much love and respect for you.

    @roadrash3101 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Yes, it is true that Loons cannot walk very well on the ground because their legs are situated farther back on their bodies than any other wayer bird. They are fantastic swimmers, and diving is their feeding/defensive specialty. This person did a huge favor to the stranded Loon and likely saved it's life by getting it to water and releasing it. On land they can be easily taken by a predatory animal or hit by a car. Sir, you did exactly what was best for this unfortunate situation and just ignor the uninformed commenters!

    I have been searching the source of that beautiful call, that is used in so many japanese themed media, for months. Your video has finally put an end to it.
    What's more weird is that loon's wail used in mentioned media for cranes/herons or just a generic japanese garden ambient sound, and I can't still wrap my head around the fact it took me so long to find the source.
    Loons don't even seem to live in Japan, what the hell?

    • @lm2017
      @lm2017 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Yeah, I wish people would be more accurate with their bird calls in films. For example, in many films, if there is a bald eagle flying over head, they play a Red-tailed Hawk call. If you look up Bald Eagle and Red-tailed Hawk calls, I guess the hawk is supposed to sound more fierce so they use that instead, but I think the eagle sounds just as fierce. And a lot of herons make a sort of grunting call, so that's probably why they don't use the correct call. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a bunch of sounds and they are trying to get people to use them accurately.

They’re so top heavy that they can’t walk long distances, just short little spurts between nearby bodies of water. They also need adequate space to take off from. Such cool birds though, love hearing their sound on a calm night.

    I❤that sound. They very rarely come on land. The reason being that their feet are set so far back on their bodies. Not built for ealking/being on land. They are a water bird, built for swimming/diving. Thanks so much for sharing this w/us ScenePhotos.

    now that I think of it... I've never actually seen a loon walk before. I always thought they'd waddle like a duck.

    Loons can not start to fly from land, they need a lot of space in the water. and when the lake is too small, they can never leave and die there... they are not good on land or in the air, but they are amazing divers...

  • @jokatal

    Loons can't really walk on land. They've evolved to where their legs have moved so far back (for better swimming) that they're front heavy, so this guy wouldn't be able to take off if he wanted.
    They sometimes crash land on wet pavement like airplane runways or parking lots thinking they are water. :(

    They sound beautiful when you are watching them swim in a pond or lake from a cabin near the woods.

    Loons can not walk far on land. They need a long runway to take off.
    This loon obviously mistook the parking lot for water body. Without help it would have died from lack of water and food. The video poster saved its life. That was a kind act!

    Aww, I'm soo glad you helped it. I was worried as soon as I saw the thumbnail because it wasn't in water. I came upon one just like this near my home when i was younger; coming home late from work. I think it thought the puddle in the street was bigger than it was. My mom, thankfully, knew all about them; she loves birds. The one we found was exhausted. I took it home for the night, we gave it something to eat and released it in a creek early the next morning. It seemed to circle back in thanks, before eventually swimming away.

    So loons are related to the extinct hespironis, a proto bird creature that hunted in the open waters and was incredibly clumsy on land due to the positions of their legs. Unlike ducks and other waterfowl, the loon has had an entirley different natural history and while they are very different from their ancestors, some things havent changed
