People with conviction like Tarantino is what has been missing from Hollywood for too long now. Whether you like or hate his films, you can't deny that he stands by his work 110%.
@@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep Agreed 125% Hateful Eight was such an embarrassingly bad and empty movie. I almost can't understand how it's even possible to make such a bad film. Michael Madsen sat in corner the whole film and looked like a grumpy old lady. Tim Roth sat in another corner and had like one line in the whole film, with a weird fake accent, like "my coffee is hot" or some shit. Then Samuel L. Jackson held a long boring speech about his big black dick. Then Channing Tatum jumped up from under the floor and people shot at each other or something. Then all that unnecessary Tarantino-esque over the top violence in the end finale. Like, haven't we seen this lame ass shit like 10 times before already? I think Tarantino actually tried to make some kind of Dogville light stage film but with his normal dialogue, and the end result is just an unmitigated catastrophe of a train wreck of a film. The actual Dogville is an actual good film by Lars von Trier, but the problem is Tarantino is not a mature writer. He can't write sensible multi-layered stuff. He can just write catchy bubble gum popcorn shit stuff. His only film with a mature dimension to it, Jackie Brown, was based on a book by Elmore Leonard.
I don't know about you but i don't think movies need to be considered 'offensive' to be entertaining, or need to have things that could be considered to be offensive in them to be entertaining (although 'offensive movies' can and are mostly entertaining). But hey, if you do only find entertainment from 'offensive' movies you can definetly find those movies (even nowadays), u just gotta go outside the mainstream. Depending upon what people define 'offensive' as nowadays u can find lots of amazing movies that are 'offensive'. I mean shit, best movie of the year so far 'the green knight' i'm sure people can call offensive by reading a misogynistic interpretation into it. Just go watch any Lars von Trier movie and u find an offensive masterpiece. Cinema hasn't been killed by cancle culture at all. Maybe mainstream cinema, but even some of the mainstream stuff has some amazing films in them that, yes, aren't offensive, but nonetheless amazing movies.
Everything isn't offensive though. Also you can be offensive you just have to be sure that you know what you are talking about. If you have empathy, talent, and skill you can do anything but its like any caustic material if you just whip it around don't be surprised at the reaction. This is why no one is canceling RDJ for playing an Australian guy playing a black guy. Its why Bill Burr all kinds of shit. You just have to set it up well, you have to build trust with the audience, and make the landing. If you can't do that then you probably shouldn't do that kind of material.
I don't know what is entertaining about watching someone jerk off to gore or someones ear being cut off though. In the right context those things can make sense (maybe) but tarantino sounds like he genuinly thinks that's the highest form of art.
Everything is offensive to someone. Some people think they smell good while other choke at the stench. Some people think the muppets are bad for kids. Some people think the earth is flat. Just because some people think something is bad doesnt matter. It matters when they decide they cannot tolerate its existence and get violent. THATS THE LINE.
It seems to me Tarantino's argument is the precursor to "Never apologize if you didn't do anything wrong." Normal people understand that a movie is a work of fiction and what happens in a movie isn't real and can be enjoyed and separated from reality. So if somebody thinks your movie is going to be problematic, why give a shit what they think? It's your work, make it how you want and see who else is willing to enjoy it.
If a certain group of people, however, is depicted badly in a fiction movie it may have a negative effect on a subconscious level for certain viewers. It might alter the way people view individuals being part of this group. Especially if the viewers are of a young age group.
That may be true ---IF you're Quinton Tarantino. But movies' need funding. And funding comes from cowardly corporations and investors who are terrified to be accused of "sexism" or "racism." So most people HAVE TO "give a shit" or they'll be canceled in a heartbeat (ask Roseanne Barr.) The PC fascists are far more viscous today than anything in the 80s. College campuses across America are banning speakers right and left if they aren't on board with the woke agenda - for fear of student riots. A teacher could get fired for calling a male student "he" if that student claims to be non-binary (whatever the f that means.)

Tarantino is the epitome of a true artist: not giving a shit about backlash for the sake of making art. For all artists out there, don’t let your creativity be overwhelmed by a bunch of crybaby losers behind a screen. Make art, use violence if it adds to your art, use politics if it adds to your art, use anything deemed controversial if it adds to your art. Although some won’t understand and will wind up hating on your work, those clever enough to appreciate it will be touched by it.
Saying 'No' with conviction and direct unwavering eye contact is empowering and the rush is awesome. Seeing the flicker of confusion in a bully's eyes and watching them realise their audience is waiting for them to make their next move and they have to go to the next level is worth it. Mostly they just scream at you and call you names lol.
The best is when it's someone you know personally who often falls into that bully dynamic because they're "obviously right" and so ANY disagreement is taken as a personal insult or attack, even though they're the ones that were literally just insulting you for your point of view, which you don't even assert to be correct or the only view. They'll look at you almost like you betrayed them, even though THEY'RE the one bullying lol. The look almost screams "Bu- but you're supposed to let me win! What are you doing?!". Then comes the inevitable tantrum followed by trying to make you feel like the asshole for simply standing up for yourself while calmly disagreeing or simply saying "no" when asked to comply with something you find ludicrous.
The only time I was bullied the guy was talking shit about me, on the next opportunity I jumped on his neck in an neck lock wich unfortunately(or not) I let it go, but then we got up and exchanged a few punches. He never "bullied" me again.

It's so wild now to think that Reservoir Dogs was considered "controversial" because of the violence. I think the "I don't tip" scene would cause more controversy now.
The thing I loved about Reservoir Dogs when I first saw it was that it was like a play. There was lots of over the top violence, but it was driven by dialog. Goodfellas is like that too. Both movies give you that monkey rush of adrenaline without being dumb. Which is amazing.
@chuckbuskee Goodfellas jumps from place to place?`Almost all of it happens like in the same neighborhood and the nearby airport, and that's going on during decades

@@Justforthefifteen Actually, that’s not the case. At least not art that is produced for the public. Censorship has been the rule in western civilization for centuries. The artist has usually felt constrained to work according to the taste of his patron and not to transgress against the state censor or the church. This has been especially true for writers but also for painters, film makers, musicians, etc.. Everywhere we see the tension between the artist and the Powers That Be. To say that the 1980s didn't have violent movies is to ignore franchises like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween... Tarantino wasn't afraid to use the gore factor that was so popularized in the 80s, but he used it in far more realistic situations and not just sensationalized gore.
as much as I like QT movies, in this clip he's taking credit for something he did not do. The change that happened in the 90s filmmaking was ignited by the massive success of Scorsese's Goodfellas which came out in 1990. QT managed to get Reservoir Dogs funded thanks to it. Scorsese changed the 1990s just as much as he changed the 1970s. QT was of course extremely influential on 1990s culture, but he did not start the change.

The issue here is what he said at 0:56. He said there is more of a "blacklist" and that in the 80's they were "doing it to themselves" meaning that they were censoring their own films and art because of their own personal ideals. Which is fine, that is still art. Then he goes on to say "now they are doing it to you" and that's a key fundamental difference between now and the 80's and why this is so critical to us as a society. That is not art, that is propaganda. Because they are making artists change their art to suit their message and narrative that is a textbook example of propaganda. It has been used by dictators for hundreds of years, to kill millions of people.
Easy solution - if you don't want a studio to dictate what you do in your movie, don't use the studio. Release independently. You can't force a studio to change their ideals and face backlash - it makes perfect sense if they don't want to do it if consumers are going to give them a hard time and thrash the movie, the studio, the execs, which happens. They need to release films the public will accept.
My parents died in the killing fields of Raya the Last Dragon because they wouldn't denounce their staunch platforms of heavy and consistent corporate taxes on new, profitable digital media outlets during the pandemic. @@rhoynedev Its not so easy because I guess hollywood is one of the only places you can really make films because you need these huge ass sets, and crap like that. It's really hollywood execs that are forcing their ideals on the artists, writers, and directors, a lot of these people have no artistic influence they just provide money and land to make the film, you basically have to go through them because there is no one else to go through. You can't just make a 50 million dollar film independently and you can't make everyone else happy. The ideals of the studios that you speak of are destroying the integrity of the films that they make and are making them basic, boring and bias. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them.” Obviously that can't apply to everyone, we can't all be rich and successful, but it does apply to people like Tarentino.
Tarantino is a genius film maker. Really hope he gets back into making afew more films. Movies are so bland and old hashed out plots and stories saying the same crap over and over again. We need someone like him to ring some spice back to film.
Almodovar’s cinema was coming off the back of fascism in Spain, when your dictator has people murdered for just thinking creatively then your most creative souls are going to unleash all they can. It’s also good to see Almodóvar hasn’t really slowed down all too much.
In Rogan's defense he's an artist as a speaker, comedian and actor. He's referenced great films like Ex Machina & Sicario, so it's not like he's pumping Marvel trash and remakes. Plus as far as comedies go, Suberbad was hysterical. When that bum called the kid McMuffin I don't think I ever laughed so hard in a movie theatre. Matador was awesome though; I'm glad to hear Quentin mention it.
Matador was legit. What a call man. I recorded it on a whim on TCM and was shocked at it's aggression. Man Bites Dog I saw at 14 and it was so disturbing I still remember it.
I can get behind top 10. For sure. Some of his recent work seems overly self aware but otherwise he's been gold. Seeing the uncut 70mm version of Hateful 8 in the theater was amazing. Thank you thank you, Quentin for bring up the blacklist! Johnny Depp just came out and said Hollywood is boycotting him. I respect him as an actor and totally think his ex is an opportunist using whatever current PC flavor of the month she can use. But I disagree with him using the word boycott ( ironically his fan base is solid in his corner and is boycotting those who are blacklisting him ). I thought of the red scare and the blacklist. And yes, this toxic situation of onion thin skin PC is really absurd and out of control.
One thing I will always remember and will always give me respect for Tarantino is when he started out he said “but it’s my movie, fuck them im doing it”
Man, I really hope Tarantino gets to go ahead with that Star Trek movie we've been hearing about on and off over the past decade. The current iteration of Star Trek is a series that really could do with a bit of "I do what I want for my artistic vision" right now rather than it's current focus on political preaching. I know Star Trek has never been a stranger to political subtext, but historically it was always a "what if that? This might happen" or "how would you respond " type of scenario, as opposed to a "THIS is how you should respond" and "there is no grey, only black and white" message that current iterations of the show preach instead .
@@Guitar-Dog I never said it wasn't. Read properly and you'll see I specifically said it uses political subtext at times. But it never used to preach to the audience the way it does now. The example you gave isn't preaching at all. It's exactly what I said it used to do. Show you situations, let you think about them and reflect on them yourself; Not tell you how you should be, who is good, who is bad or what you should do.
We still have decent cinema? You're either drunk or from a parallell universe. Movies today has nothing to do with telling a good story, is ALL about "diversity", meaning tiny girl bosses who can easily beat the crap out of King Kong with her pinky if necessary, filling racial quotas, making the main protaginist is a female and also making sure she's a lesbian since no man is good enough for her. This series is amazing. A gem, though odd as a way to describe a war movie, but truly so, in the way this outstanding, timeless production so brilliantly shows the full range of humanity. It shows us sacrifice, compassion, a sense of duty to those next to you, if not for the greater cause, it shows us fear and finding ones personal strengths in the most-trying of times, and how every one of us much reach deeply within ourselves and find, in order to contribute to any trying endeavor -- whether in war or not. It shows how war hands us some of the most blatant experiences of suffering and loss known to humans, but with humanity comes recovery, tenacity and perseverance -- for those who avert the ultimate sacrifice. There's no larger playing field of 'good vs. evil' as that of freedom vs. tyranny, and this series captures it so well, all while reminding us of what is good and important in life with thrown-in pleasantries and humor, even during war (for example, one of my favorite scenes: the little boy being handed a chocolate bar). The way this show grabs hold of you and has you feeling for these characters as if they are your own friends, shows its perfection in storytelling. And this brings us to the entire story, the larger picture, shown through the platform of this enormous historical world event, that is: Not only making a difference for ones own generations' way of life and but for the positive consequential effects for future generations. It is indeed a gem of a production and one can only hope, as timeless as this show is, our educators will have the decent character and integrity to make it shown in every high school history class -- to every generation. of every nation -- all so that future generations can learn what is important and good in life and having good character, so as to not repeat history, but even more so: to have it remind us that we ALL stand on the shoulders of good people who went before us.

It's called entertaining a view point. You're adopting it. Accept it. Then, after a while, what's essentially you will filter out the bull s*. If you, instead, become reluctant and create friction as soon as something new counter what you already know, then the other party won't trust you. When they won't trust you, you'll lose the battle, because they'll build insurmountable trenches, instead of a bridge into their heartland. It sounds counter productive, I grant you that. @@willek1335 Exactly. Being open-minded doesn't mean that your viewpoint or opinion (scientific or not) does NOT change... in fact, that's the ENTIRE POINT of having an open mind. Or whatever. You get the picture. And if you don't... pro tip: You're closed-minded. 😎
Not saying Tarantino is entirely wrong but Silence of the Lambs came out in 1991. Reservoir Dogs came out in 1992. RD’s audience and cultural impact was minuscule compared to SotL. That movie really showed how a superb plot, great writing, and quality acting can co-exist with graphic violence. It was effectively a big budget arthouse film-high brow co-existing with violence and difficult subject matter. Other studios saw that success and tried to copy that formula. All due respect to Tarantino but Reservoir Dogs’ cultural impact wasn’t quite as great as he says.
Quentin always put himself on a pedestal. Everything he says about himself is exaggerated. So it's better to pretend he says nothing and just listen to him talking about other topics, which is great
Was the 80s the decade of "they won't let you do that"? Sure, Brian DePalma had to fight tooth and nail with the FCC to avoid having Scarface given an X rating, but after he won the lawsuit he put back all the stuff he had taken out of the film to appease the FCC and was able to screen that very violent and obscenity-laden film just the way he intended it.
You can give examples of movies now also that goes too far in violence.. he lived the 80S and spent his time watching movies I don't think we remember it better than him we just pick and choose what to watch from this era today and of course they wouldn't be the norm .. most movies from the 80s were lame af go through top movies in box office week by week to see how awful it was
I think there was a lot of media "outrage" about gratuitous violence and sex in movies in the 80's but that's because a lot of movies in the 80's were sold on having gratuitous sex and violence, at least compared to the 90's. I think of the 90's as being way more politically correct than the 80's. In the 80's you had to add in violence to sell the movie. In the 90's you had to have a genuinely good film to justify the violence. Reservoir Dogs would not have been made with the torture scene if it wasnt already a great film. Compare the blood drenched horrors of the 80's like Nightmare on Elm st or Friday the 13th to the more abstract horrors of the 90's like Blair Witch or The Ring.
I think the main issue is that social media is becoming less and less social.
When u give a bunch of self-absorbed, ignorant and arrogant kids a public platform to speak, things go south pretty quick
Just don't use social media, keep all the people you wanna talk to on your phone or a messaging system.

We need more shitty movies to steal off the internet.
Tarantino's got a point. If everything is offensive, is nothing offensive?
And if so, can we finally get back to entertaining cinema?
I mostly just watch and enjoy movies. It’s not until I hop on Twitter that people are arguing about how woke or problematic shit is.

I think what Tarantino brought was a realism to the violence that didn't really exist before.

Bob Igor sent my father to the swamps of Florida to scalp tickets in Daytona strip malls. He never came back. I was told he was given "a Gatorade funeral". My mother, a struggling animator, was forced to work on Lyle, Lyle Crocodile to make ends meet for me and my siblings. She'd walk through the door with dried tears and tired, red eyes from when she'd sit in the drive way and cry. I asked her one time why she was crying-a contemplative pause settled on a her face. A forlorn stare made its way across the living room and onto a picture on our mantle of our father, cheerily looking back at us. "They're just crocodile tears" she'd say.
Soon they will be no less that political propoganda mix with company advertisements for iphones or (whatever the current thing is) instead of a movie. The whole film is just an AD and a way to manipulate your political opinion. It's easy to say, "oh if you don't like it just go independent." It doesn't work like that they put you on the contract to make the film then they want you to change it based on their political opinions.
I think cinema in the 80s did a perfect balance between homogeneous and bold.
The funny thing is when enough people are "blacklisted" they will eventually create a counter culture among themselves and inevitably that counter culture will one day become the new popular culture. It has been happening forever and it will happen again and again. And again: Who the fuck are "they"? Today "they" maybe matter for a period of time, tomorrow "they" will be forgotten and the cycle goes on and on.

This might happen" or "how would you respond " type of scenario, as opposed to a "THIS is how you should respond" and "there is no grey, only black and white" message that current iterations of the show preach instead .
I really hope he does not do Star Trek. He is only doing one more movie.
Star trek is very political.
It had the first interracial kiss on television.
Star Trek was good and best when the showrunners told Roddenberry (and his vision) to take a hike.
@@Guitar-Dog You know you're lost when you consider interracial couples "political". Get a grip, dawg.
he sounds like a teenager with all the cursing lol, still love him
He's a kid at heart lol
Quentine and the few writers/directors like him, are the reason we still have decent cinema
Etc.
95% of movies today are man-hating 3rd wave feminist woke garbage and you know it.
"Didn't exist in 1989" well I guess he never saw Robocop!
I have the same question when Biden said “as usual THEY gave me a list of names to call on” during the press conferences.

i like Quentin alot more now.
Factoid - Video Archives closed in 1995 and Tarantino bought the entire inventory and re-created the store in an area of his house.
That's great that Tarantino gave Romeo is bleeding a shout out. That was a great movie.
Yeah!
There is a big difference between 'they won't let you do that' in the 80's and the politically correct wokeness that is going on now.
that's what he's saying here too
And what exactly is that? Seriously. You can obviously make more today than ever. But don't expect everyone to like it. Tarantino's movies seemingly push the envelope more as the years went on. Django and the Hateful Eight didn't get "canceled."
@@dylanbutts1628 you really can't though, you think tropic thunder as an example could be made today?
@@kurziieee Yeah I do,. It probably wouldn't have mainstream success, or be made by Disney Studios, but shows like it's Always Sunny got away with doing the same thing. Just because black face is more controversial doesn't mean there is an issue. It should be controversial. Is that really your problem. You want more black face.....?
@@dylanbutts1628 Hateful Eight got boycotted by police organizations because they didn't like his stance on police brutality. Their boycott ultimately ended up being a lot of impotent dick swinging since it didn't hurt his career or keep the film from turning a profit. But cancellation doesn't always work.
1980's: “To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women.” - Conan
2020's: ''To love your enemies. See yourself driven before them. And to hear the lamentation of our women'' - Cuck

America needs to fall.
Apparently Batman is a cuck
Harvey was wrong Quentin! As a woman, the mr blonde scene is my ALL TIME FAVORITE SCENE of Reservoir Dogs! Every time i hear that song, all I see is Madsen. It was brilliant 👏 thank u for standing your ground!
Tarantino is a free speech champion standing up against the “They”. Bravo!
sounds like you didn’t listen or understand his point remotely, lol
His whole point was that there is no "they".
There is no "they". It's basically a political stunt to say "they stopped my freedom of speech" if its not like the actual government censoring you. How are some angry twitter fans gonna stop you?
The conversation they have has literally nothing to do with political correctness, it's about depictions of violence
This man is speaking the truth. I absolutely loved it.
"Who are they" exactly! This guy has always been on cutting edge, way ahead of mainstream puppets. Hope you're spawning more of yourself for our future. Stay strong buddy.
"mainstream puppets?"
They = The Aliens!
Ask Kanye
If I was Almodóvar I'd be tremendously proud of having Tarantino talking about me that way!
Joe changes his views on subjects faster then The Flash changes his clothes. Joe, before one his guests speaks "Water is wet", then his guest would say "No Joe, water is dry", Joe's response "Wow you're right, water is dry".
You have to ask yourself how Joe's one of the biggest podcasters with the biggest names as guests. That wouldn't work unless you had the right attitude.
@@willek1335 Exactly. Being open-minded doesn't mean that your viewpoint or opinion (scientific or not) does NOT change... in fact, that's the ENTIRE POINT of having an open mind.
For example, I'm against violence. That doesn't mean I wouldn't 'get schooled' and listen to someone who's experienced it their entire life. They might tell me: "Violence means survival. If you don't kill, then YOU'RE killed, so... from my PoV, you wouldn't be talking with me if I wasn't ready to snap necks and fire metal slugs through people's skulls. Also, if you were there, you'd become a victim instantaneously."
What people often forget is that 'right & wrong' aren't clear-cut when someone lives in (for example) Somalia vs. _________. Or whatever. You get the picture. And if you don't... pro tip:
You're closed-minded.
I don't think QT remembers the 80s very well.
You can give examples of movies now also that goes too far in violence.. he lived the 80S and spent his time watching movies I don't think we remember it better than him we just pick and choose what to watch from this era today and of course they wouldn't be the norm .. most movies from the 80s were lame af go through top movies in box office week by week to see how awful it was
@@porflepopnecker4376 why is that
I think there was a lot of media "outrage" about gratuitous violence and sex in movies in the 80's but that's because a lot of movies in the 80's were sold on having gratuitous sex and violence, at least compared to the 90's.
Ok? Just one movie out of an entire decade
Now I know why Tarantino really likes Lars Von Trier movies 😂
Who doesn't... that shit is weird as ffff haha😂
Every one there seen them do.
What are those Kind of movies ? Im interested
