    If you think Tarantino is a racist, ask any of his POC lead role actors or any of those cast by him as a person of color and see if they don’t stand by his vision or what he stands for. This was a film to make fun of the hypocrisy of racism and how wrong it was but made to feel right by the people of the time. This is by far my favorite Tarantino film and always will be.

      I'm black. (I have no doubt someone will "doubt" that fact because apparently if you don't say "person of color" or "african-american", you ain't black now) but anyway, I just want to say, this is in my top 5 favorite movies, and I'm someone who doesn't typically like movies from the past decade. Tarantino isn't racist for simply using the N-word in his scripts or showing racism as it is. That's PC stuff.

    • @finished6267
      @finished6267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Why is racism only for blacks and whites? It's total horseshit that's been leveraged and politicised. White guilt shouldn't exist. Governments are racist. Not individuals. We were all born into this machine by chance. We should all understand that the human condition binds us all as one family. Corporate/Govt powers need us separated. Every true racist i ever met NEVER actually knew a black person. I have several "ex racist" friends who are dear to me, who show up for me and I show up for them. We are all in this together.

      Samuel L. Jackson stated that half of Tarantino’s black characters were actually the smart, intellectual characters, which a racist director would never be able to create characters that way.

      i’ve always escaped with the idea Quentin wanted to create a western to honour leone and cobucci, whilst also wanting to convey the message or racism not being a colour issue, but a power issue. Stephen is honestly a bit more openly racist towards Django than Calvin, because Stephen now sees someone he can lorde his position over, it goes on and on and on

    One of the greatest things about Tarantino, is that his movies are for truly mature audiences. Many of his detractors and their complaints seem childish, shortsighted and simpleminded. Life isn’t all sunshine and roses, and he doesn’t insult our intelligence, hold our hand or water anything down and I have a great appreciation for that.

      @tomistenqvist1311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +273

      Dominic Cobb take Django Unchained for an example he doesn’t soften the abuse that went on during this time. He doesn’t censor violence, language or anything for that matter if it’s a relevant truth and plays a part in delivering something to the audience whether it’s information, feeling, mood or whatever.

    • @dominiccobb6470
      @dominiccobb6470 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@tomistenqvist1311 in this case you are right, but what about kill bill? I wouldn't say the violence in kill bill is about truth it's just about being as violent as possible:D

    • @tomistenqvist1311
      @tomistenqvist1311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      Dominic Cobb yes i agree :D that movie is very very violent and full of gore but there is a lot more to that movie or movies. I think one of the reasons Tarantino did all of the violence is to show how bad ass a FEMALE protagonist can be without making it sexual in anyway. He also showcases how vendetta as a drive is not a good idea etc. I totally get your point and I appreciate you taking an approach that doesn’t involve cursing me out :D I also stand by my initial statement that his goal is not to provoke. And if people get provoked by movie violence they have no idea what every single human being is actually capable of doing. Just read through the 20th century history and your naivity will die!

    Tarantino is amazing. There ain’t no strings on him, he tells the story exactly as he wants to tell it. The actors that work with him are fantastic. He asks them to do some hard stuff and they come through with flying colors. Django is a must watch film.

  • @claudedavis201
    @claudedavis201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +129

    What I love about Django, is it’s Tarantino’s most straight forward film plot wise (in my opinion)
    When you look at movies like pulp fiction or reservoir dogs, that are told in a non linear fashion, they can be confusing, especially if it’s your first time watching them. Although pulp fiction is my favorite film of all time, I remember being completely confused when I saw it the first time. I had to watch it like four times before I understood it. I always loved it, but it took me some time to understand it. With this film, I never had that problem. I remember seeing it in the theater, and being able to full understand the plot and the story. And yet it still had that Tarantino charm. If you ask me, Tarantino is the greatest film maker of all time

    • @fincarosa
      @fincarosa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +760

      I loved it for its randomness. Him popping up as an Australian in the US in the 1800s wasn't factually believable and had no connection to the storyline. That made it hilarious to me.

    • @samjr1151
      @samjr1151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      @Sam Riley It's definitely an Australian accent I live in South Africa and the White people that live here don't really sound like that when they speak.

    • @ToxicallyMasculinelol
      @ToxicallyMasculinelol 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      believable? you guys aren't thinking tarantino is actually australian, are you? his character is australian, he's faking an australian accent on purpose because australian slavers in the caribbean were a real thing

    • @FJUH
      @FJUH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Toxically Masculine where’s your evidence for Australians being involved in the Caribbean slave trade? Australia has its own shameful history with slavery but related more to Aborigines and the Pacific islands. Aside from this the characters are miners, not slave traders. Django asks “So you work for the LeQuint Dickey Mining Co. don’t ya?” To which they reply yes. Gold miners from Australia went to California in search of their fortunes and vice versa.

    • @fincarosa
      @fincarosa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @toxicmasculinity - Nope. The back story to Tarantino's Aussie character and the other Aussie character is that they work for the American guy they are with, who owns a mining company. He paid for their boat ride to the US on the pretence that the two Aussies would have to work to pay off their boat fares but would essentially be free. But in fact the American mining guy still withholds most of their wages. So the context is actually these two guys are in effect white slaves. Not at all slave owners.
      And your comment that there were Australian slave owners in the Caribbean seems wrong. Australia never had systemic slavery.

    I watched this movie 2 months ago, and as Black South African I say he could have made it better by including all of the deleted scenes. I feel like he dumbed it down because he knew some wimps would still cry about it. Notice that there was not one black person getting hung, no black women raped by white masters and no racist songs like 12 years a slave, because that actually happened during slavery. They treated our people like trash and they wanted them to be reminded day by day. But anyways this has to be the greatest film I've ever seen in my life. Django Unchained is a classic. I actually disagree with you here. I thought Jamie had severe issues detaching from his "rich real life" and fully entering the mind of a slave. And this interview fully comfirmed that feeling. He mentions his wrong initial mindset and you can see in Tarantino's gaze this moment that he knows Jamie did not manage to pull off the role as fully as he wished. Also, Chris did great, sure, but not as outstanding as in Inglorious Bastards. Same for Leo, I thought it wasnt his best performance. I think mean roles aren't really made for him, he is such a nice guy irl it's too much of a stretch for him. I loved the movie but overal I thought the rendition of all actors was not the strength of Django (except perhaps Samuel who did an awesome job, but again, his role was closer to the usual wacky/smart characters he usually plays in Quentin's films).

      TReXcuRRy Idk I thought it was a great movie. Jamie’s character as Django went through a serious arc so I can see how the mindset changed like when he was initially freed he didn’t speak much and seemed curious about the world. A few months later he learned more from whatever actor played Schultz so then Django became his own man and wanted to fight back against people who opposed him. Leo was actually really good as a spoiled young man. He was prideful, arrogant and his ego seemed so fragile throughout the movie so I thought he play his role well. Jackson was great! A bit weird when he transitioned from like an old man into a kind of advisor or sadist though

    How Leonardo DiCaprio did NOT win an Oscar for his character is still beyond me. I was never a Quentin Tarantino fan and actually stopped watching Reservoir Dogs at the scene where they cut off a guys ear, drench him in gasoline and set him on fire. That scene was too much for me! It took me 10 years before I watched the movie to the end. The movie that got me watching Tarantino again was Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchanged. He's a brilliant director.

      +Tyrell Wellick Its because they miss the point of the movie. They hear about all the violence and racism in the movie, and they also get annoyed at having any form of comedy along side racism. This movie has all that but they miss the point. Jamie fox summed it up in the last sentence. Its not about black people killing white, its about the black guy trying to live his life with his women.
      Critics are heavily to blame for this, as negatively reviewing a controversial movie makes them more popular than giving an accurate review. People then form a biased opinion without ever watching the movie. Just like the controversy following the release of mass effect. So many people complaining about it when they had not even seen it. It all comes down to ignorance. That and i think people like to forget the slave thing ever happened and dont like being reminded of it.

    One thing I loved about this movie is the how it used a German character as an anti racist in the American South, and who frees and ultimately forms a strong personal bond and roots for his black former slave compadre.
    Hollywood has an issue of limiting German characters to negative traits mostly related to nazism.
    I appreciated Django offering a different and v positive lead German character. Well done Tarantino & Waltz.
