  • Arthouse Tuesday continues with our review of "About Dry Grasses." Turkish director and co-writer Nuri Bilge Ceylan offers a beautifully shot, understated epic about a smug art teacher in a remote village (Deniz Celiloglu) who's accused of inappropriate conduct by a couple of his pet students. As the situation develops, he struggles to escape not just this school but himself. Co-starring Merve Dizdar, who won the best-actress award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. In theaters now.

As long time viewer since the WTF?! days I'm so happy you guys reviewed this film and liked it. In my opinion Nuri Bilge Ceylan is neck and neck with Jonathan Glazer for the best director currently working (I know Scorsese is still around, but hes been around forever) and About Dry Grasses is his best work. My favorite film of last year by a huge margin. I'm so enthusiastic about it and I've been thinking about it all the time. Everything NBC does is solid gold. Like reading a really dense Russian novel in one sititng.
Alonso, if you want to see more Ceylan I recommend starting with Winter Sleep, his 2nd best behind this one. After that, The Wild Pear Tree and Distant. I'm sure Dave his his own opinion on this too.

Definitely a highlight of Cannes and 2023 as a whole. Ceylan never disappoints!
I actually met the little girl Ece Bağci the day after the premiere-she sat next to me during a Zone of Interest screening-so it was nice to possibly be the first member of the public to recognize her from a movie and tell her she was great in it. Promising talent, I hope to see more from her!

Ceylan is a director who was "ruined" me for other directors. He is so involved and the emotion runs so deep, that other directors have trouble reaching it in my opinion ha. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is another spin on the detective movie that is totally unique

While I was about to ask you about if you can review the movie of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, I came across this review. About dry grasses is currently showing on Netflix in Türkiye. I say this as someone who has watched all his movies this movie is very good, but it's not the director's best movie. I really like your reviews so thank you for reviewing this film. Greetings from Turkey.

Loved it and love Ceylan - who is one of the best directors working today. The film was one of my favorites of last year when i saw it at TIFF. My only criticism would be a decision made near the end (i think you know what I mean...). Without getting into spoilers, if there is one filmmaker alive who should NOT make that choice it is Ceylan. He is so good at immersing you in a rich sense of place, with gorgeous landscape photography and contrasts between vast and cramped settings, that the decision he makes seems an odd fit. Takes you out of it for a moment.
Nevertheless, a bold choice worth thinking about. And a great film.

Something that will go unnoticed for foreign audiences is how real everything feels and looks in this film. This film took me to my primary school days and put me in the classroom with those students. It brought back memories and feelings from my childhood days that I had long forgotten. NBC has always been meticulous about authenticity, but I think he has outdone himself in this one. I've never seen anything quite like it. It was incredible.

i reccomend "once upon an time in anatolia" by Ceylan . it' shows anatolia as a silent, giant entity which surrounds our characters in the movie and shows them it's different faces while they are on a journey to find a body of a murdered man. they are like small things having a journey on this sleeping giant

Thank you guys for the wonderful review. Really loved it. Just a minor feedback that the Turkish C is not pronounced like the English C. Instead, it's pronounced like the “j” in “jungle", So the director name will be "Nuri Bilge Jeylan".
