- We were thrilled to welcome director Nuri Bilge Ceylan to the 61st New York Film Festival to discuss the U.S. premiere of his film, About Dry Grasses. He sat down with FLC Assistant Programmer and NYFF Talks Programmer Madeleine Whittle to discuss metaphor, the composition of dialogue, and more.
The latest deeply philosophical drama from Nuri Bilge Ceylan is a work of elegant, novelistic filmmaking set in a village nestled within the bleak landscape of the East Anatolia region in Turkey. Here, an art teacher named Samet (Deniz Celiloglu) is struggling through what he hopes to be his final year at an elementary school, complicated by a friendship with a charismatic new teacher (Cannes winner Merve Dizdar) and an accusation of impropriety with a student. A Sideshow/Janus Films release.

I agree with the person who said his style is closer to that one of Bresson. Also, what is this necessity of comparing everything? Tarkovsky was Tarkovsky, Ceylan is Ceylan. They both great.

Henüz videonun başındayım ancak söylemeden geçemeyeceğim, 01:40 'da karaktere söz vermek istedim diyen Nuri Bilge, söz hakkı tanımaktan bahsediyor, çevirmenin yaptığı tercüme promise kelimesiyle birine bir şeyi yapacağı konusunda söz vermeyi içeriyor. Bence böyle önemli organizasyonlarda simültane çeviri konusunda tecrübeli ve çevirisini yapacağı kişiyi biraz tanıyan insanlar seçilmeli.

Çeviriye yanlış başlanması tabii ki pek iyi bir ilk izlenim değil ancak geri kalan her çeviriyi ben ingilizce okumuş biri olarak gayet doğru ve güzel buldum.
New York'un en büyük festivalinde, Nuri Bilge Ceylan gibi, modern Tarkovsky olarak anılan bir yönetmenin sözünü anlık yanlış çevirme yapılabilir, profesyonellik ne derece olursa olsun insan doğasıdır özellikle böyle özel bir durumda
I hope Nuri is doing well. He has spoken perfect english in almost every other North American interview I've seen.
This type of interview highlights the limited awareness people have regarding Turkish cinema, culture, and history. There is a noticeable absence of discussion about the connection between Ferit Edğü's novel and Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film. While anyone can assume the role of a journalist or film critic, making a meaningful impact requires a dedication to thorough study and delving into the depths of the subject matter. I've been waiting and waiting for this film to come to New York. Ceylan is my favorite filmmaker. I will always spend several hours watching one of his films.
After the passing of Krzysztof Kieślowski, I wondered if I’d discover another filmmaker who both intrigued & excited me. Thankfully, Ceylan is that filmmaker.

Bence çevirmen,iki dile de çok iyi hakim olmalı .Sorular, önden verilip hazırlık yapılmalı.. Çünkü kavramsal bir dil kullanıyor.. Ve bu , sıradan bir çeviriyle sarfedilen emeğe ortaya çakan çalışmaya haksızlık yapılmasına neden oluyor… Hayal kırıklıklarına yer vermemek için çevirileri yapanın entellektüel olası şart!

Moderator should have asked questions rather than ranting about the movie. She just shares her views in a question form that leaves the listener with only yes or no answer. Typical american art enthusiast, she just wants to talk.
"hide behind the rules"... so I can put you an that little box and dismiss you as sorted.
I think that this is ultimately hypocritical, and I think it was meant to be, on some deeper level.
I think that this was bringing to the surface an aspect of our nature when it comes to such calls to action, hide behind rules, meanings, dreams, ideals, when all of that is stripped bare as the illusion truly reveals itself as such.... then, what is left is dried grasses.
the point is it brings you back to the material world, a world that is isolating for some strange reason.
But why then, when we truly come to the surface of reality, do we eventually feel like it is a great abyss that separates us?
It is because you don’t come to the surface of reality, you think you do but you don’t.
