Agreed there is a huge difference in the envelope and distortion of say a Stock compressor, An 1176 and an LA-2A now the difference between clones base don these is only slight but can make a difference with alot of tracks. EQs on the other hand are a slightly different story.
hey graham just started to watch your videos but i must say .. you do (as far as i heard) beautiful mixes, supernice plugin and DAW reviews and you give sweet tipps to everyone who's making music out there. Continue your work and ill continue whatching. Greetings from Germany
His settings are the longest attack for an 1176 (not sure what it is in fractions of a second). Drums are often used with an 1176, I wouldn't use it on OHs but for tighter kick and snare sound they are pretty cool. Also using the CLA-2A on Vocals sounds great for me.
It's pretty standard nowadays to tune vocals, and in most cases producers or mix engineers will use Melodyne to tune them. Not sure if that's what Graham does but it'd be an interesting topic for sure.
C1-L1 vintage compressor is a great compressor too....and it is free as a plug in. If you use Reason, it cost $50 but it is worth more than that to me. This is a great time to be a mix engineer. Even the free choices are good choices.
A video on the outboard gear you use would be very cool! Engineers use so many different techniques when routing OB gear to DAW's, I would like to see your approach and how you incorporate it into your sessions. Unless you only mix ITB... but I imagine you must use some OB gear during mix down?
Believe it or not, that's actually Graham singing and his band. The name of the track is "Already there". If you join dueling mixes before the month is up, you can get a copy of the session itself to practice mixing.
Yeah, at first he was very avid about only using the minimum to achieve great results. It's pretty obvious the popularity and influence he has on the "home recording market" has gotten the gear fairies attention, and is giving him all these new goodies to "review" and endorse... which is cool!
Helped me out SOOO much. I make mainly rap music so the CLA-76 would be for me and I wouldn't of know it had better transience if it wasn't for you... so thank you to the moon and back!!
Different compressors contained different tubes amps and other parts that saturated and changed the tone of the sound so based off of those ideas they have digitally cloned (doesn't sound identical but they do sound good) and thats why different compressors EQs and other studio gear change the tone of the sound.
Having a hard time wrapping my head around how various compressors and EQs are considered musical or color the sound. Yes, I'm fairly new to production and audio engineering, so I'd love for someone to help me understand this. I understand compressors to reduce the volume of a signal once it passes a threshold, and EQs are raising or lowering the gain of specified frequencies and bandwidths. Where or how does the coloring and musicality come into play?
Great product review! It´s true you don´t need anything else then Stock plugins for a great mix. And that really allways the habit you should have when it comes to getting some new plugins! But i have too say i somehow fell in love with these compressors since i bought them a few weeks ago. :D
i was using them a lil randomly.. i knew they were coloring but didn't knew the difference between them. and still don't haha it's very subtile. good compressors tho!
4 Main styles of compressor. This is an optical compressor Charactersrics: Warm. Smooth. Fixed ratio - 3:1 fixed attack. Fixed Release. It has a slower attack and slower release Good on vocals bass guitars; other live instruments. Not best choice for transient control since slower attack and release.
Hey Graham - I see in your dock you have Universal Audio plugins. You should do a review on them and compare their compressors to the CLA stuff. I have used U/A for years now and I think they are the best plugs on the market and I rarely use anything else on my mixes.
Great video! I own all three. I bought them when they go on sale at different times. Do you have a video on how much you would charge? Hourly, by project, etc?
As far as compressors go they all react (especially in the hardware world) slightly different to transients in that they don't all respond the same way to the different material and often add some artifacts in the way they achieve volume levelling.
Klanghelm DC1A,), ModernDynaKiller, ModernLostAngel.ARE nice but to say "Some may colour the sound but it's no really noticable in the mix." is wrong. I think you need a little more time mixing if can not hear the difference between, say, whatever built-in comp in your DAW verses even ONE the ones you have listed on vocals or bass....it took a few years before we could, but it IS there! Mainly listen to how each one "sit's" the vocal or bass into the mix.....
New to mixing and engineering I see the mono and stereo option for these in my daw which should I use and what's the difference between the two thanks in advance 🤙🏾
For quick automatic tuning, autotune does the job (well obviously). But if you have the time, use Melodyne, it's astonishing, you can make the vocal sing an entire different note, correct the timing, and it's very natural even with the hardest settings.
He could've been using a fast attack to even out the performance. Using a slow attack is good to preserve or even enhance a transient, but using a slow attack DOESN'T even out a performance. A fast attack will even out the kicks... also, a fast attack will push the initial transient down so that its more closer in volume to the body and meat of the drum...nothing wrong with that. Graham could've been evening out or getting more body out of the bass drum. Mixing is purely based on choices.
9:07 - "I really like the Blue stripe on the Bluey, it really gives things a nice color & character" LOL!!! OK, it has been a few years now, and folks who have been with you on this journey (like myself) has seen your style of mixing change..... Is there a NEW REthink Mixing in the future?
when comparing the price of a plugin vs its hardware counterpart it's only a bargain if you feel the sonic quality is the same. otherwise different products should have different prices
Can other compressors get almost the exact same results? Yes. But these are useful as they get THAT sound within seconds. Getting the LA2A for lead vocal duties was one of my most eye opening experiences. Ear opening? Whatever. They are indispensable IMHO.
Can anyone tell me what the real difference between the Native and the TDM versions are? I have these (AU for Logic) and enjoy them. The LA2A works great for guitar solos. I've just always been curious if the TDM versions are that much better or more life like. Thank you in advance!
Hi, was wondering if I can use any of the CLA compressors on keyboard sounds such as synths, strings, piano ect? And if so which one would u recommend?
You can use them on keyboard sounds if you track your keyboard through your DAW. I have a Roland Fantom X8, what i do is run the Fantom with instrument cables to my Saffir Pro 40 to lets say input 3 and input 4. Go to your DAW arm it to record input 3 and 4 and then press record and play your keyboard. Once your recording is done add the CLA's or any other plugin to your Keyboard recordings input chain and you are all good! I hope you understand and it helps. If not feel free to email me and I will be glad to make a video to better help jbjohnson937@gmail.com
GComp, Klanghelm DC1A (no many controls but it's great), ModernDynaKiller, ModernLostAngel. All these are great but the key is to LISTEN to each compressor and not judge by the interface. The difference these waves plugins make is so inaudible that it absolutly doesn't worth giving 500$ to get them. Actually every compressor that has attack, release and a ratio knob does the same thing. Some may colour the sound but it's no really noticable in the mix. The ones I listed are all you need.
And if you're wondering if you need these compressors and worths buying them, the answer is absolutly NO. There are SO MANY great free compressors that can do the job. Just google and discover them
Jj Jones My music? WTF are you talking about? Waves does not make software that self destructs over time. I've had these compressors for a while now and they sound as good as when I got them.
That really is the worst plugin 'review' I've even watched. 15min talk without even briefly demonstrating how each plugin sounds . . . which, I'm pretty sure, is the most important bit of the whole effort
Great video, you have a talent for really explaining things clearly.
I just grabbed these on sale, and O.M.G. the color, the texture... SOOO CRISP-- 5 stars ⭐️👍🏻
4:13 for the actual comparison
nice video, good stuff!

I just got this bundle from waves with their 48 hour sale plus a $50 off coupon for $99. Talk about a steal huh, Graham ? :)
Seriously. I thought I was dreaming. It was such a ridiculous deal.
just did the same!!!

Please--*some* audio demo in the video. Comment offered with respect.
this is not a review, its advertising .
The 1176 full left position is the slowest setting on it anyway. It gets faster towards the right.

I got the bundle for $150 of the summer. Haven't used the stock compressor since. The 1176 takes a while to get used to though
Parabéns!
1º Produtor que usa os plug da "WAVES" do mesmo modo em que uso no meu estúdio. Com o analógico OFF
8:15 Actually the release on "one" is very slow.
CLA-3A on sale for 29.99
Got all of them, even fairchild and ssl g, for 30 bucks per unit, and la-2a for half the price!

Wouldn't having a faster attack kill the transients of the drums? You're actually killing the kick.

Forget Chris Lord, we need a Graham Signature Series!
C L A THE MAN
Really good explained video with passion in it!
They are very great if you mix in the box.

I think it would be great if you did a more comprehensive video on these among other popular comp plugins. Like a REthink Compression video.
For quick automatic tuning, autotune does the job (well obviously). But if you have the time, use Melodyne, it's astonishing, you can make the vocal sing an entire different note, correct the timing, and it's very natural even with the hardest settings.

what are the pre sets like its not been mentioned, its a feature on them, any other producers out there like to comment /help as Graham maybe forgot
I meant to say, I know the difference between blacky and bluey lol. Pushed enter by mistake lol
Graham, do you do any pitch correction on vocals? if so, can you do a tutorial video on how you do it?
Finally !blacky and bluey
SUPERB!!!
Not musing, music. I like it actually
Where did you hear this? I saw a video of waves modeling CLA's personal compressors.

I'm at the beginning of the video, but the musing sounds like progressive poprock
CLA compressor or Renaissance Compressor?
hunnidroundz i prefer Rcono
Will you be doing any EQ reviews of any sort?
Yeah!
What do you prefer the ssl compressor or cla? I see you used to use the ssl...what do you currently use now?
Hey, Graham, any idea how these stack up to the Native Instruments versions of these compressors?
Just wondering if you have gotten to play with the hardware versions of the above mentioned. And how they compare?
What band is this? And definitely the name of the song !!
Hey Graham does Studio One use the RAM like the PT11 does now? Thx
How does it feels when you see in the waves page that its 79 dollars?

What does that "analog" buttons are for? On API-2500 there is just an on & off switch but there is 50hz and 60 hz
Noise. Primarily hiss. Leave it off 90% of the time.
Análogo noise , emulates the noise of those analog equipments., Which is good to have some in this in the box productions
What a salesman!
$500 for this bundle?? Seriously?? In this economy??? I stay with stock.
the attack is tricky
is it true that if you dont upgrade your waves plugins they degrade in sound?
Yes this is true.
