We have got a treat for you! Our friends over at Waves have given us a first look at their brand new plugin, the CLA Epic!
I’m particularly interested in hearing this plugin because it’s not just an emulation of a piece of equipment. There’s all those wonderful LA2As, 1176s, and everything else that has been modelled on Chris’s gear. This is different, because it’s not just an emulation of SSL technology, this is more about how CLA thinks. It’s not just emulations or versions of gear that he uses. This is about using delays and reverbs in a combination that works.
Mix with Epic Depth: Complete Reverbs & Delays by Chris Lord-Alge
Studio legend Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Muse, Bruce Springsteen) is a master at creating epic depth and dimension in every song. And now he is giving you the key to that depth: his complete suite of reverbs and delays, in one epic plugin.
CLA Epic features Chris’s 4 go-to delays (Slap, Throw, Tape, Crowd) and 4 go-to reverbs (Plate, Room, Hall, Space). All modules are based on Chris’s favorite studio gear, which he uses in various combinations in every one of his mixes.
Whether used on vocals, drums or other instruments - CLA Epic opens the gate to more depth in your mixes and productions.
Easily Blend Reverbs & Delays the CLA Way
The key to CLA’s depth of sound is the way he blends multiple effects creatively - sending multiple delays to multiple reverbs on each track, and controlling the exact blend with his console faders.
CLA Epic gives you all these rich possibilities in one plugin. You can now blend CLA’s most epic reverbs and delays in the same creative manner. No need to open different effect plugins to get a rich landscape of sound: At any time, you can activate any or all of CLA Epic’s 8 effect modules, and blend them easily using the plugin’s console-type faders.
To make things even easier, CLA Epic always loads with Chris’s default settings for each effect. You can go deep and tweak all the familiar parameters (as well as some surprising ones). But first, simply load the default modules, blend in the different effects, and hear CLA magic in action.
The Secret to Depth: Easily Send Delays to Reverbs
Chris Lord-Alge has an extra secret for mixing with depth: he sends his delays to his reverbs, so that the delays become part of the overall sonic landscape.
CLA Epic lets you send any delay to any reverb, in addition to the option of running the effects in parallel. With the click of a button, you can choose to send each delay only to the Output, only to (any or all of) the reverbs, or to everything at once. Effects routing that would take hours in your DAW now takes seconds.
Over 350 Epic Presets to Get You Started
CLA Epic comes packed with 50 powerful presets by Chris himself - for your vocals, drums, guitars and keyboards. Not enough? The plugin also includes over 300 presets by Greg Wells, Michael Brauer, and dozens more top producers and engineers.
A quick look at the CLA Epic:
    • Reverb & delay super-suite designed with Chris Lord-Alge
    • Based on CLA’s favorite classic studio gear
    • Add epic depth, dimension and space to your mixes & productions
    • 4 delay modules: Slap, Throw, Tape, Crowd
    • 4 reverb modules: Plate, Room, Hall, Space (Non-Lin)
    • Blend the 8 effects easily on any track
    • Send any delay to any reverb with the click of a button
    • Modulation control per module to add texture and spread
    • CPU-friendly
    • 50 powerful presets by Chris Lord-Alge
    • Over 350 additional presets by Greg Wells, Michael Brauer & more

I ran it on a summed bus for my orchestral stuff, and I gotta say, the way the reverbs brought out the horns without making them sound washed out like so many other reverbs was mind blowing. CLA is truly a genius and this will be my go to delay/reverb for everything I do

@@GarrettMusic1 im loving the combination of the classic compressors bundle with the CLA Mixhub. Theres just something about those combinations that just works on everything. Occasionally ill add a C6 and the classic deesser to take care of harshness along with the compressors and mixhub but most of the time mixing just about any genre i can get away with throwing the mixhub on every channel and maybe add a the blue stripe 1176 or the 3A and that just about does it. I am also falling in love with the studiorack plugin. Although its free, it is SOOOO Useful. So aside from all the ranting about how much i love Waves plugins and to answer your question, id really probably have to say for mixing live instrument music like country or rock or jazz or anything like that it would have to be the CLA Mixhub. And for more electronic music like pop, edm, hiphop, trap, rnb and stuff like that id have to say the C6 most likely. When it comes to effects though, i love H-Delay and Manny Verb. Manny Verb is my al time Favorite Reverb plugin for Vocals especially in electronic type music. The new ecosphere plugin is freaking dope too. Im so excited to try this out though. Lol i talk too much. I need friends

Finally had a chance to watch this and thanks so much for the walk through! I have to admit that I don't understand the usage of Hi/Lo Pass on the Output as opposed to the Input of the individual effects. So I just need to educate myself on the usage there but I love the concept of a single plugin for the frequently used delay/reverb combination.

    • @PhilipRikoZen
      @PhilipRikoZen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just an input, i think the idea is that if you cut before the fx, the fx may again introduce some of those frequencies, meanwhile what you want is to definitively
remove them from the sound (for example the low frequencies from a reverb are more often then not just an hindrance, like the meme of the reverb on the sub bass). If you want to remove some frequencies from the original signal (and it's not only about the low and high, it could be some mids to scoop the reverb, or the main frequencies of a synth to make it cut more) you can always put an EQ/C4/F6 before Epic on the send.

So I did demo and eventually get this plugin. This is what I discovered. In order for me to use this the way I'd like to use it, the number of instances I need on a typical track maxes out my CPU quickly. So what I've decided to do is go back to the old way I used to record music back in the stone ages. I record a track and after I'm sure the performance is exactly the way I want it, I commit it to "tape" and then move onto the next track. I print with FX so there's no going back. I continue the process for each track. At the end of the recording process I then go to my mix buss and glue the individual tracks together. It is a lot of work and it isn't easy but the upside is I can now record more tracks than I normally could as CPU consumption is almost zero given everything is a wav file with all FX imprinted on the file itself. Working like this really brought me back 40 years except I'm not limited to the 4 tracks I had back in 1977. My last song, "Adams's Rib" contained more tracks than any song I'd ever done previously. Thanks as always for the great video, Warren!
For me, one of the strengths of returning delay, reverb, and harmonizer effects to channels on a console (or tracks ITB) is the ability to simultaneously manipulate their multiple return levels via console or control surface faders, allowing you to audition real-time variations of how they are blended. The speed in getting great sounds, as well as "happy accidents" that happen along the way, are impossible when working with a single mouse.
It would be AMAZING if Waves introduces an optional, companion CLA Epic USB controller that allows you to manipulate the plugin's parameters in real-time without a mouse, as TC Electronic has done with some of their delay and reverb plugins. Now that would be next level epic! Where do I sign up to be a beta tester? haha
Until then, I suspect I'm going to want to get another control surface and assign its faders to the faders in the CLA Epic plugin. This of course means buying another piece of gear after successfully justifying it to my studio partner and wife, haha.
Thanks again for everything you do for the community, Warren!
    Peace, Love, and Ringo,
    chaz

I like the multi-section modulation with depth+speed bands. I like the input mute buttons with additional routing from delay to reverb. Not overly complex and who delays the reverb very often if ever? Stay safe Warren. (My Kali LP-6s arrived, no hiss, what a world of difference to headphones.)

Looks pretty interesting! If I think a bit about it, it is actually a bit like Brauerizing but just with reverbs instead of compressors. Your source can go to any combination of reverbs at the same time depending on what you want out from it.

The best video on this plug-in I have seen. While I might pick it up it has also inspired me to try setting something like this up manually in my DAW using 4 different delays and reverbs. It will be harder to use but also have more flexibility and I can choose the effects I like most. I wonder if this plug-in workflow will become shall we say copied now that this is out there. Great idea and implementation.

What would be a cool add on is a small hardware controller so you can manually ride more than one fader in real-time...Like CLA does. you could manually automate each fader but that a pain in the butt. I think that would be a very cool optional add on for a plugin like this
