Thanks for the clip. I loved Ricky on a Yamaha YZ250.. I had a 1985 yz80 Sept 1985.. It broke my heart he went to Honda I bled for my YZ,s on many😂 occasions.
I was a kid, 10 or 11 here, but man he was dominant. Crossing the finish line at one race in mid air he gave double shooters with his hands to the crowd.😅 Craziest thing ever. And then 15 years later, some young kid named Travis did a fn backflip on a bike. 🤯
Is that the race where Johnson and a host of others crashed at the start, Johnson was the last rider to get up basically starting last and it took him 19 laps to catch the leader, Guy Cooper, and on the last lap passed him 100 yards from the finish line to win the race?
The 1985 production YZ 250's taking 1-2 over the factory works Honda's! What a great MX bike, full of power and with an Ohlins shock and the Simon's anti-cavitator front fork kit, was actually well suspended. Throw on a FMF hand hammered exhaust and some solid sprocket ratios and you could win some races. ( I won a few )
250 of the year. I raced the open novice class, ran against CR500's, YZ490's. If you controlled wheel spin off the gate you could holeshot about every moto. What a mid range punch & they were beautiful bikes. The BASS ......... horrible.
I would love to see the race when Rick Johnson had such a big lead that he was showboating his ass off...i forget where or when it was...I can't find the video...it might have been at the Collosium but I'm not sure. Anyone recall??
vincent tofanicchio, That would be the 1988 Los Angeles Supercross. That was in his Heat Race that he was showboating. Doing stuff that at that time was unseen. In the main he was taken out by Guy Cooper and lost his brakes.
+logan byrd No, it (Rick Johnson's bike) is a 250cc. I believe they stropped racing the open class in supercross 5 or more years earlier (defiantly by 1985), and I know the YZ490 never got water cooling.
This is by far my favorite era of mx. Such a huge concentration of talent and personalities!

Thank you for posting these old races! Brings back a lot of memories!
Great vid, and audio. I think this is the fist time I can hear the chain chatter in the breaking and acceleration bumps, on a you-tube video.
the best years of supercross....good times
Rick johnson sure was fast. Old school. Back in the day. Good times
listen to the sound of those bikes... incredible.
Awesome! thanks for sharing.

Thats awesome, the crowd there is sooo loud. The best!
we were 2nd level 2nd row right behind the starting gate we could smell the 2 stroke oil i loved it
They just pile all that dirt on the steps? I can't imagine what the cleanup is like.
Do you have the Rodil Cup race? I was there that night!
Excellent video, just missed the smell of smoke 2 stroke.
1987 LA super bowl of motocross my favorite race of all time...

I know on his Honda days RJ was at most dominant.... but he was also fast on the YZ.

that was sick!
Those production Yamaha YZ 250s were hanging tough against those one off works Hondas RC 250s, those works Hondas should have dominated the Yamahas !
Fuckin Legends!!! Haha I remember watching this back in da day
