    Maybe your opinion about the Exact 2 coupled with Rega P 8 (the same TT and cartridge that I own), stopped me from buying the Ania cartridge.. I found it very interesting when you said that Exact 2: "exerts a very definite sense of control over the music.." and that "you are left in no doubts as to the force of any kind of beat or anything that's playing in the music..." This was very convincing and very well said!

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This was particularly good for me because I bought the P6 with the exact pre mounted. The main reason was my phonostage can only handle MM cartridges. But when I have the funds and can afford a high quality phonostage I think I will get the Ania.

      The Exact also sounds amazing being an MM stylus. I have a P3, which had an Elys, which is not near the quality of the Exact stylus. However, I did an upgrade to the Ania Pro and a Aria Mk3 RIAA in one go, and wow, what a difference. I now got the soundstage I thought I would get from a turntable, because I was very disappointed with the Elys (that white one). I did listen to the Exact before throwing the money at the above, as I also got blown away by the Exact, but when I first wanted to upgrade, I went all-in. I don't regret a second.
      They say (the dealers and people on Hifi-forums) that the stylus' needle will last for 800-1000 hours. I am a bit nervous at the moment, since I've played extremely many hours without counting them. I made an assumption of say 70 hours a month. So 6 months in, I have already used half its lifespan. I wonder if this really is true. It means it costs £0,5 to play a single record.
      I spent ca. £2300 on those two items.

    Its good that Rega decided to replace the Ania free of cost. I have heard other stories of cantilevers bent on cartridges (although not yet on the Ania cartridges) and the additional cost of replacement. That concerns me. Do the cantilevers of moving coil cartridges in general are more susceptible to this kind of damage than moving magnets? I don’t know the answer. My Rega Exact sounds fantastic to my ears and I find it very robust. I have accidentally dropped the Exact in a few occasions and hit the cantilever many times, but still looks straight. Although I would love to get an Ania Pro.
    Just to update that I took the plunge and bought the Ania Pro. Like others have said, the Ania Pro is miles ahead of the Exact. It sounds beautiful through my Aria Mk1. I enjoyed my Exact for over three years and it was a pleasure.

    Mark I hope your cartridge comes back soon. I’m really interested I. Your perspective of the rp8 vs the rp10 and the rp8 that you own vs the p8 sound wise. Your introspective is always interesting when you are talking Rega. Thanks and I hope you are well. You are extremely right about SME they are very expensive and it was on my wish list an SME 20. The Lyra Atlas cartridge is 12,000, it I will say this when my dealer carried SME they were built like talks and are a work of art and very heavy, but the sound quality with the Atlas was something that remained etched in my mind. It is incredible how good vinyl can really sound.
    The dealer was using an Audio Research se2 tube phono preamp, 12,000 dollars at the time now replaced with version 3 which is also 12,000 dollars along with the Audio Research Ref 5se, now replaced and the replacement, you guessed it is about 12,000 dollars, hooked up to a power conditioner, the Audioquest niagara 7000, that is 7000 dollars. Audio can be expensive but as you said it’s all relative. One last thing Mark do you have the first pressing UK version of Pink Floyd Dark side of the Moon or Led Zeppelin 1. It is amazing how valuable they are now.

    I think the Ania was a bit buggy it had a few things to iron out hence the Ania Pro, when I had the Ania on my P6 there was a lot of hum, I had to cable tie the pair from the tonearm together and keep them away from other cables in my system, which helped reduce it quite a bit, when I got the Ania Pro that hum disappeared, not sure whether it was just my cart faulty

    surely the old goldring 1042 you had on your p5 was better than the exact???

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But I never heard the Goldring on my RP8, or through my present system, which is much better. I sold it, along with my P5. I'd had the 1042 since about 2009, so it was 6 years old by 2015 and a little bit past its prime. It still wouldn't match the quality of the RP8 though. There are loads of demos of the Goldring/P5 combination on my YT channel though - most of them with the Creek MM/MC phono stage which was very good, but not again, not a patch on the Aria I now use.

    I'm contemplating buying the new Rega Plannar 6 T/T and wondering if it is possible to use different cartridge say the Audio Technica VM95L MM as opposed to the Rega Exact. I've read that Rega T/T can only use Rega Cartridges -- is this true? The reason I want to use the Audio Technica is that I have cartridge already so that I can save monies towards the Ania MC Cartridge.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use whatever cartridge you like on Rega TT’s. Their tone arms have room for a third screw that makes alignment unnecessary for Rega cartridges, and the VTA may be slightly out, but that makes very little difference to sound quality as long as the tracking force is set correctly. Get your dealer to fit your AT cartridge, and all should be fine. They should do that for free at the point of sale. Having said that, I think Rega offer a discount on the Ania if bought together with the P6. So if your AT is in good condition it might be worth buying the P6/Ania and flogging your old cartridge on eBay. Again your dealer should be able to inspect your AT cartridge and advise you.

    Hi Mark, I have had the same problem with my Apheta 2 cartridge, one of the channels was not working but Rega replaced it. I have been in to Audio t for a demo on a Naim amp using the new P8 and Aira with Ania Cartridge briefly, and then the cartridge was changed to a Apheta 2 a big difference in sound, a lot cleaner. The P8 was close to the RP10 as far as sound quality. I have been back to Audio t to audition the Aura Phono stage, the sound was very refined, making the Aira stage sound a bit wayward and flabby, sort of out of control.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky you. I’ve never heard an RP10 or even an Apheta2. I must say, it’s the mono button on the Aura that intrigues me the most. Just because I’ve never heard mono being reproduced in mono before and I’d like to hear my Beatles mono box (and other vintage LP’s I have) as they were intended.

      The day before yesterday I heard the difference between RP8, P8 and RP10. All three had Apheta 2 mounted on them. I was surprised by how much better the P8 sounds compared to the RP8. For me it was a huge difference. The RP10 adds another dimension where I get sucked into the music in a way the two other decks can't match. I was wondering if it was worth going for the Apheta 2 instead of the Ania since the dealer thinks there not much difference unless you compare them directly. But reading your message it seems the difference is bigger

    Hello Mark, I’m looking to replace my cartridge & am considering the Goldring 1042 which is one you used on a P5.
    How well did it cope with surface noise in comparison to other cartridges you have tried ?
    I have tried cartridges by Audio Technical, Rega, Ortofon, Nagaoka & Denon. They all have different qualities and some handle surface noise better than others.
    So I was wondering how your Goldring 1042 fared with regards surface noise?
    Thanks again.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty good, I think. It has a Geiger S tip which is a fine-line variety, better than an elliptical tip. But to get the best with the P5, you need the optional power supply and the white belt. IMHO they did more to reduce noise than the actual cartridge. Even saying all that, the RP8/Exact combination was and is far less noisy than the P5/Goldring, but that is because of the better deck. It's a minefield, and as I said to Julian Fletcher, I never got to hear the 1042 with an RP8. My 1042 had well seen better days when I replaced it.

    Hi Mark. I have been following your videos for quite a while now because i find them very instructive and trustworthy. I have been thinking of acquiring a Quadraspire audio rack. I think it will work well with my Rega setup. I fear that my current enclosed entertaining center may be holding the performance a little back and an open rack will open things up. Could you please share with us your thoughts and experience with audio racks. Thanks. Please, continue the great good job.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I’ve only ever bought one Hi-Fi rack in 1999 which I have used ever since. The effect it had was of controlling room vibrations, tightening up bass lines and rhythms substantially. I wouldn’t necessarily audition Hi-Fi racks but it might be worth taking a dealer’s advice as to the best materials your new rack should be made of to complement your Regas. Their record decks in particular are very sensitive to vibrations. Rega even make a wall bracket which they claim has benefits to the sound.

    • @MarkPMus
      @MarkPMus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Exact, no question. I think you’ll appreciate the lower noise of it. I don’t think the P3 is quite good enough for an Ania. Funnily the RP8 is too good for an Ania so I’d imagine it’s a perfect partner for a P6. Having said all that, it might be a bit churlish to avoid an Ania if you really want one! Especially as you have a Neo. The Exact is the sensible choice, the Ania is the splash out cash option.

    Hi Mark, thanks for the video. I recently dove into the world of moving coil cartridges. I purchased an Audio Technica OC9 III dual moving coil cartridge, and the sound is phenomenal, even compared to the Ortofon 2M Bronze I was using. Tracking is very good also. I bought a digital stylus force gauge which has turned out to be indispensable. For $20 CAD, you can't go wrong. It has been calibrated and is accurate to within +/- 0.01 grams. I am currently using it on a Project 1 Xpression Carbon Classic turntable with an upgraded acrylic platter.
    I do like this turntable, but can't help but think i should have gone for the new Rega P3. I do have a line on an old Thorens TD 145 MK II with the aluminum plinth that I am going to pick up fairly soon. I am somewhat envious of your PMC speakers. If you don't mind me asking, how much did those set you back? I'm currently using Paradigm 9SE MK II speakers, which are 4 ohm. I'm driving them with a Carver M1.0t power amp, and using an integrated Carver CM-1090 as a preamp. I am also envious of your lovely RP8 turntable. I've watched some of your other videos and the sound is incredible. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

    I think Rega have realised there’s more money to be made by creating more turntable models and then charging a fortune for a few little tweaks. They had the planar 3 for years and years, they were happy with it and now they are making silly money turntables that probably most people won’t appreciate due to their room or equipment. But Rega seem to have jumped on the “hi end extortion” band wagon. The RP1 / P1 are an absolute bargain though!

      I bought the Exact as part of a deal whereby I upgraded the Regs P5/Goldring 1012 for a Rega RP8/Rega Exact. So it’s hard to answer your question. Yes, there was an immediate improvement. I suggest the bass improvement was due to the RP8 but then a while later I upgraded the Exact to the Ania and that brought about greater improvements.
