Recently I became a 4x4 enthusiasts but I have been watching you for a long time but I always still find it fascinating when you are working with these ancient and questionable beasts. I tell you something the IMI don't teach you much about Vehicles that age and it's a shame really.
Thanks!
Mike
Very useful video Mike. Like you say the compression test will tell you that there is a problem but not what it is.
Very good and simple, but not all head gasket failures lead to bubbles in the coolant, coolant or oil loss - 300Tdis are notorious for gasket failure between no.4 cylinder and the aft of the engine, well away from coolant and oil galleries. Hopefully, your pressure test would result in a traceable hiss.
Indeed it would
Thank you for leak down test information. Such good advice.
Thanks Garth!

I'm watching a video at work on an engine I don't have. Now I have to explain why to my bemused colleagues.
You my have different engine but principles of diagnosing fault it's applying to your engine to.
So if you were buying a half decent leak down tester and you don't have access to a snap on/mac van?
Bloody good idea with the glove. I once saw a kit which fed smoke into the airline which I thought was nifty until the fella told me how much it had cost him. To be fair he worked on aircraft so I guess you'd need something like that.
"Bloody good idea with the glove."
Condoms work too, and take less time to fill.......
Mine all have holes in after being unused in my wallet for years....
@@greebo7857 I always had another plan for those ... although I suppose being ten years out of date your plan is probably better!
@@BritannicaRestorations The bats do need feeding from time to time mate.
I think I was going in the right direction last time. Waiting for the next video now
Hi Mike I bought one of those Chinese leak down testers a few a few months ago just cause it was cheap and looked useful can't think why we didn't have one donkey years ago such a simple piece of kit always had the standard compression tester now I can look forward to mine breaking like that
Yes they are good but low pressure -I broke it out of the box thinking it was a 100 psi one!
Change the end gauge for a 100 psi one
I stripped the block and it has the orifice drilled in, but to be honest, the gauges are useless -all you need is to get air into the cylinders and listen or look for leaks
@@BritannicaRestorations yes now Ive seen you use it looks like you should be able to hear the problem
Those cheap stethoscopes are another excellent tool for diagnostics
and... head gaskets ... now that's a cool thing, never would have come to that idea! Maybe the pro do know all that but I'm eating up all that great ideas ! (if this is English..) Cheers Axel
Yes - such a simple test can show a whole lot of faults!
Is one inlet tube on the manifold obstructed ? Maybe a dumb suggestion, but once I discovered debris lewft by someone.
