How beautufil is this music!!! Salieri certainly is underrated! Diana Damrau wonderful and genial as alwayas ! Interesting: Damrau low notes sound to me with a timbre that remember very much Olga Peretyako (except the lowest ones). No wonder that Damrau and Peretyako joined forces in an wonderful production of "Die Entfürung aus dem Serrail" some years ago (I'm writing in May, 2023). Many thanks for this wonderful and very rare uploading, a real jewel!
Grandissima opera.
Some passages Diana Damrau has to sing here are impressively difficult. Generally pretty high tessitura, endless runs and coloratura, very high, repeated top notes, very impressive.
Quella sera ero in teatro....
The difference between Salieri and Mozart is that Salieri's operas were - original; for contemporaries, Mozart was a "fixer of other people's notes" (Amedeus says this several times in his letters to father Leopold). What killed Mozart? - conscience - that he did not rise to create an original opera. Europa riconosciuta 1778., Though opera seria, the work differentiates itself from several of the typical characteristics of the genre. For example: an extended finale is used in both acts. Musically, the opera is quite challenging, requiring four principal singers capable of spanning wide tessituras, sustaining long phrases, and making dextrous leaps. For example, the roles of Europa and Semele go up to a high F sharp above high C a few times!
I don't know how available the score is? There might not even be a published modern edition - this was probably thrown together specifically for the 2004 production.
Opera bellissima e cantanti strepitosi.
You know what would have made this video even better than it already is? Subtitles! I had to rely on Google translate for the Libretto and Wikipedia for the plot. There is no translation of the libretto anywhere online... It seems to be a trend, because not many copies of Salieri's music exist on imslp either, it's a pity since he was a brilliant composer...
The costumes and sets (excluding the ballet sequence) were so ugly and minimalist. Such a bon bon of baroque of beauty in an opera and then all of this Flash Gordon set costume design nonsense. Charming cast and good acting or lively full orchestra. The ballet was transporting and the dancers stunning. This is essentially a canary piece full of fun pathos abs a LOT of notes.
Thank you, La Luminosa, for posting this recording. If I understand, it's the performance given on the occasion of La Scala re-opening on Dec. 7 2004? Is it available on a DVD?
It's classic baroque music. Although let's not forget Salieris contribution to Opera. He was the one who developed opera as we know it today from a technical point. And Salieri died the most rich composer in Europe. He made more than a decent amount of money. He was more famous and wealthy than Mozart. Something that bothered him to a degree. And let's not forget that Salieri was kapellmeister, so let's not forget what the patrons asked him to write. Mozart was a freelancer. He could write anything. But you can't deny the talent behind maestro Salieri. Who influenced many composers of his time. Like Haydn for example, even Mozart his "rival" ironically. We can't deny his talent and his works. His motto was masterful simplicity. And because something may be simple, have better structure and follow the rules more,it doesn't mean it's not beautiful. Salieri may not be Mozart,a genius, but he was a damn good composer. And his musical achievements agree

Even Bach "stoled" music by other composers, like Vivaldi and Pergolesi, but it was a useful custom of that time... And Bach is rightful named as the best of every time...
Tragic that there is not yet a studio recording for reference
That same Opera exists in DVD form
I mean an audio recording produced in a studio. Those are important to keep works easily available for audiences, students and performers
Thank you for replaying the full video, l‘ve been waiting for this for a long time.
I'd tell the same!
