Dortmund lost the title more than Bayern retained it in all honesty, basically denoting points to relegation-fodder in the 2nd half of the season. They really just lost steam in the end, but I fully expect them to maintain their momentum much longer this time around. They've done bits in the market pulling in the btech Hazard (which is no shame to Thorgan. He's still a good player in his own right. His brother, Eden, is just on another level) and Julian Brandt. Not to mention Sancho is just getting better and better.
It's really quite admirable how clubs like Dortmund and Sevilla have still managed to compete despite being selling clubs considering when Monaco sold their stars, they sunk like a stone all the way to the bottom half and almost got relegated to the 2nd division of Ligue.

As a BVB fan, i agree with most of the things you said. Yes we bottled the title last season, however if somebody told me in august 2018 that Dortmund would finish just 2 points behind Bayern i wouldn't have believed them. As soon as Favre got to Dortmund the team glued together, we played great, like in the golden days with Klopp.
Let's hope that this season we can pull it off all the way!

Dortmund isn’t really a selling club any longer - players like Sancho will go. But tbh no club (including Bayern Munich) can hold such players in the Bundesliga. Havertz is rumored to be transferred to Bayern but already with the plan in mind to use Bayern as a second step after Leverkusen and not the final one.
All the other players that are below Sanchos level aren’t sold if the club doesn’t want to do so (like Diallo who had an „interesting“ discipline and wasn’t really bound to the squad). Pulisic for instance was just a bench player so Dortmund was more than happy to get 60 millions for him and be able to replace him with Brandt and Hazard (the first one definitely being better - the second one being about on par with him) for the same amount.
The last time Dortmund really had to sell someone was around the time of Kagawa. Lewandowski left on a free Transfer, Aubameyang wanted to leave the club for years (and it was promised to him but there were no good offers for him) and then was finally sold especially as he was very one dimensional in his playstyle. Dembélé again the Sancho thing. You cannot keep those players if you’re not in the Top5.
So yeah for years Dortmund only sold players they wanted to. What’s true is that Dortmund heavily focuses to get young players that will rise in value and then can either be included in the squad for cheap or sold if they didn’t meet the expectations.
Except of Dembélé there was no player sold in the last 6 years that Dortmund wanted to keep.

Dortmund can be a European giant just like Real, Barca, Bayern, City, Liverpool, Juve all they have to do is stop selling their top players. Like they are going to sell Sancho probably next year. Rather they should try and hold on to their best players for longer. Then gradually they will be their up with the big dogs.

Very well thought analysis from someone who actually watches Dortmund, the squad became much better this year, but there's one thing blocking progress this year, Witsel next to Weigl is a very bad partnership, both same type of midfielders, with Witsel better at everything. He either should use Brandt and play 4231 that changes to 4141 while attacking, or should use Delany or Dahoud next to Witsel. Weigl isn't of any use in that squad excrpt as a backup for Witsel

One of the biggest problems there are with Borussia Dortmund is mostly the lack of focus during the 90 minutes which lead them to slip a 3-0 lead vs RB Leipzig, draw 3-3 at home vs Paderborn, lose 3-2 vs Union Berlin, lose 3-2 vs Werder Bremen and got knocked out of the DFB pokal, slip up another lead this time vs Bayer Leverkusen which lead them to a dramatic 4-3 lose, lose 4-0 Bayern with humiliating stats of only 1 shot in the whole 90 minutes while Bayern totally dominated them this entire game with their possession based game which hardly let Dortmund have any chances of victory and also slip up a 2-1 lead vs PSG. And because Witsel and Delaney are aging, thus not as fast as their centre backs, Dortmund are exposed that way on counter attacks such as Leipzig's style of play and also against a team with a possession based style of play such as Bayern, Barcelona, Manchester City etc. I also know I'm gonna sound rude but I'm gonna be realistic here. Their fans only dream of success. Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying their fans are the worst. But if you compare them to fans of Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern you see that they BELIEVE in their team which lead to Liverpool winning the champions league, Manchester City beating Liverpool during last season's title race thus winning the league and Bayern winning the league over Dortmund. Because their fans believed their teams can do the impossible. However if you look at Dortmund's fans their fans, they just don't believe at all. Remember last season's last match day in the Bundesliga. Take a guess what was written on the bvb bus. OK I will tell you straight away. "Deutscher Meister" or "German Champions". Which of course after that Bayern became champions instead of Dortmund which leads to the fact that BVB fans only dream of success and not believe in it just like the few examples I mentioned earlier. They may have good fans but when it comes to believe in success, they're nothing compared to the examples

Last season is still a bit of a pain to talk about, as the gave away the title not in the big, but the small games. The unnecessary losses in the 2nd half of the season ended up costing us the title.
But with that bit more of consistency they could've rather easily done it and I sure hope they'll do so this year. :)
Favre is by far the best coach we could've gotten, right after Klopp

Dortmund collapse in the 2nd half of the season despite playing well and giving an aged Bayern squad trouble. Reus arguably had his best season for Dortmund and Jadon Sancho continues to improve and the acquisition of Paco Alcacer gave Dortmund a shot at the title for the future.
With Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt and Erling Haaland this season they are in the title race with Bayern and Leipzig. The Bundesliga will be exciting like it was in the 2000s and Dortmund title wins. Lucien Farve has done really well.

Nobody denies the tactical finess of Favre, but many matches aren't necessarily won by tactics but the mentality of the team. How much do you want to win the game? If you observed Favre you will have noticed that he does not have a fighting mentality whatsoever, and imo this transfers to his players. Also, he is not willing to adapt his system, even if it's not working. The loss against Union Berlin was a great example of this, and the 2nd part of the last season too. Allthough everything was possible until the last matchday, he preemptively gave up on the title. Why? Please show some fighting spirit, on and off the field. I doubt that you can win titles with this mindset, as it is lacking the "ultimate will" but as a Dortmund fan i'll gladly let me be put right by Favre. Best regards, HEJA BVB!

Even under Favre, the made mistakes, of course. We dropped a 9 point lead on Bayern Munich, costing us the title. But the team wasnt prepared to have a bad game im guessing. shit happens. the reaction on last season was pretty good. They bought back hummels as defense captain. With his incredible skills in defending in combination with his sick passing, hes probably best for this team. And Favre forced everyone to fall back and work against hte ball if its nessesary. U sometimes will see alcacer defending a ball at our corner, but in return, someone else is ready up front if we win the ball. Tranfers of Brandt and Hazard let us play different play stiiles and we caqn now shift the game from the bench. Really proud of this team atm, great UCL start!

Bosz's time at Dortmund was a hodgepodge of problems. His assistant gave insights on what happened behind, Piszczek's loss was enormous to the defense and Bartra wasn't able to play well especially he's a slow runner. Sokratis doubted Bosz's tactics and wasn't able to step up to lead the defense. BVB's defenders are too slow for Bosz's system, and it was also remarked that they never got the men Bosz want. Then other injuries plagued the team, Auba's diva antics also happened. Not to mention that Bosz always fail to adapt when opponents adjust their tactics.
Overall, it was a total mess. Low morale, injuries everywhere, no leader on sight, one dimensional tactic, wrong system for the players, inside drama. That season was so eventful and forgettable.

The biggest problem Favre has is that he’s most of the time not willing to change the system during a match.
That’s why the match against Cologne was decided so late into the game.
After changing to a 4-1-4-1 everything worked well but last season Favre often hesitated to make the necessary changes.
Favre himself understands football better than Tuchel imo - but Tuchel was clearly better in quickly adapting the game and making necessary changes early on. Favre has to still improve in that regard - he also has more than enough players to do so (like Brandt who is great as a second center forward next to Reus in a 4-1-4-1 but is bad as a left winger in a 4-2-3-1 as could be seen in the match against Leverkusen).
It’s definitely getting interesting- but there is still a lot to improve atm (especially the loss against newcomer Union Berlin showed greatly how Favre sometimes isn’t able to find the necessary adjustments for his tactics).

What cost us the title last season were defensive mistakes and Reus and Alcacer missing crucial chances at the end of the season, defensive mistakes were coming anyway, the defenders are young and it's okay for them to make mistakes, as Wenger said "when you play talented young players they'll cost you some points, but you'll have a great playerd for years to come."
Hummels imo isn't of any upgrade on Diallo, he may just be more of a leader, but he makes many mistakes too and ruin many attacks with his failed long balls

That's nothing, Thomas Tuchel was way better , at least in two seasons he won the cup. Favre two seasons , we won the super cup because we were the runner up of bundesliga. His tactics are built on possesion 3-6-1/4-3-3 but he got a lot to prove. Man, we were 11 points ahead of Bayern last season after we beat them 3-2 at home. Guess what happened after they won the title with 2 points. Why ? Because injuries came from nowhere. As a coach, he's the one who knows the players with high fitness and not.
