When you finally realize that "A silent voice " is not a story about a boy falling in love with a girl , it's about a guy being able to love himself again .

In case you were wondering why Ishida seems to have the same shirt throughout the movie, its because he sold everything he owned when he was contemplating suicide.

Though I have never been a bully, I have never related with a mental illness depiction more than the way that Shouya's depression and social anxiety are depicted. He literally puts up a barrier between himself and the people around him as a way to cope with past trauma and sensory overload. If you pay attention and look at Shouya's character from back in his elementary school days, he is very much a people pleaser, but he has a lot of trouble with communication - his own communication and understanding others. It's part of what made him so irrationally angry about Shoko as a kid. He literally didn't understand her.
This story is a very emotional one, so it's hard to take a step back and look at the situation from their childhood objectively, but you have to to understand where everyone was coming from.
Think of it this way. These are all 6th graders. They've never met someone with a disability before, and they don't know how to cater to it. Shoko has her notebook, but other than that the teachers did basically nothing to ensure that her needs were met and relied solely on the other students to ensure Shoko got an education. The most any adult in that school did was offer to teach sign language for 3 minutes a day; not nearly enough to actually help -- and by that point, most of the other students already resented her, because they were doing most of the work for her.
Ueno is a great example of that, even though she is notoriously the most hated character. She actually began by helping Shoko the most other than anyone in the class. She was taking notes in Shoko's notebook for her, letting her know when to read in class and socializing with her in free time - yet, if you think about it, as an 11 yr old kid who doesn't understand why Shoko is so dependent on the help of others, it's not really a surprise to me that Ueno grew annoyed and resentful of Shoko.
Is Shoko at fault for her disability? Of course not. Does she have any control on what kind of help she is given? Not in the slightest. But you're expecting children to understand how to cater to someone with a condition without explaining it to them or teaching them ways to properly communicate with her.
It's unfortunately a common occurrence that people with disabilities get mistreated in school.
You look at these kids and think, "Oh, they should know better", but that's the point - they don't, and it leads to things like this occurring.
Again, none of this is an excuse to bully another person, but prevention could be taken against it by actually taking time to teach children how to communicate and properly process their emotions.

27:35, just to clarify what those figures mean, they have a symbolical meaning. Shoko wanted to give the Man she loves a present, and what do you give Your Loved ones normally, right, flowers, but she was too shy to give them to him, so she Took those figures instead, which should represent real flowers, and i think that is adorable as hell

Ueno or Nakao was a horrible person but in my opinion she was a little better than Kawai (the blonde glasses girl). Unlike Nakao, Kawai puts on this "mask" where she pretends to be a "good samaritan" when she was just the person who went along with others. It would've been fine if she stayed as a bystander but instead she fakes a situation to make her look like the hero. Nakao, horrible person but at least she's honest and is actually willing to try to make amends as we've seen at the end scene.

Also, the manga gives a bit more context about why Ueno was acting the way she was. If I remember correctly Ueno had to take care of a lot of stuff at home and was also struggling with school. Then the teacher dumped this job on her, to write everything down for Shoko and to help her in school. Which in no way should be the job of a fellow elementary student.
The teacher criticizes Ueno on her effort to read out loud while just saying "good" to Shokos "awful" reading. This pissed Ueno off even more. Her actions in general are not excusable but at least she had a reason for the things she did.

@@idk-ye7ur i mean its obvious Ueno had a thing for Ishida from the very beginning. we can also see a shot of her and a lot of young family members during the fireworks scene.
she was trying to COMPROMISE for Ishida by saying "ok we hate each other, lets not fight and be civil from now on" and Nishimiya started going about apologizing again. Ueno wanted no apologies, she wanted the same effort the other did to try and accomodate Nishimiya to be shown towards them(her) from Nishimiya.
Its tough. They both are right and wrong at the same time. I got a "thesis" written about Uenos character.

Notes on some of your queries:
    - "The Shape of Voice" is the literal translation of its Japanese title, "Koe no Katachi"; "A Silent Voice" is what distributors went for when publishing it abroad. I personally like the former more.
    - "My Generation" plays in the Japanese original as well, though despite sounding "American" The Who are a British band ;)
    - Shouko was crying on the bed beside her hearing aid because she had just been told by the doctor that she'd *totally* lost hearing in her right ear - the one that Shoya caused to bleed years before.
    - I like how you initially thought Yuzuru was a girl, went along with the pretense of her being a boy, then continued to refer to "he" a few times even after the big reveal.
    - Naoko wanted Shouko out of the way to have Shoya for herself again; she's been obsessed with him since the very start, and it will be clear if you look for her expressions towards him on another viewing.
    - It's never made explicitly clear whether Shoya's mother ripped her own earring out or whether Shouko's mother did it, though Japanese audiences are more likely to think the former and Western ones the latter. Cultural differences in honour, self-sacrifice, etc. (Hot take - the two mums are the two *true* heroines of this movie, in what they go through and what they do for their children)
    - It was adapted from a seven-volume manga, so I agree it does suffer slightly from being heavily condensed into just over two hours; scenes that would cover three or four pages become a 10-second montage, or a paragraph of dialogue is replaced by a significant glance in someone's direction (unlike Your Name, which was a screenplay from the start). I think they did a tremendous job with carrying the essentials over nonetheless.
    - Take it the right way when I say it's a privilege for you not to identify much with some of the characters. You noted you hadn't much experience of that sort of bullying in school. The thing I love about A Silent Voice is that it's messy and complex; none of the characters are perfect (Shouko's perfect niceness is indeed a fundamental flaw in her), none of the conversations go smoothly and with complete understanding, and characters that probably should get a comeuppance don't, or sometimes vice versa.
Thanks so much for reacting to it, despite it not going to be a favourite of yours in the end. Between the two, I acknowledge that Your Name is the "better" film in terms of pacing and narrative tightness... yet I like this one more. I just do. 🌸

Unfortunately, by watching English dubbed versions, you miss out on the small details. Such as the part where Nishimiya says that she “loves” Ishida. She says “suki” in the Japanese version. Which translates to “like/love”. However, Ishida misinterprets it and thinks she said, “tsuki,” which means “moon.” So yeah, it sounds strange when translated directly to English.

Yes the flash back from yuzuru's memory was shoko confiding in her saying she wanted to die then imagine yuzuru as a young child maybe 4 or 5 envisioning her older sister wanting to die because she was being bullied that's why she felt such a burden to take pictures of dead things. She hoped shoko would change her mind. It really is sad to think of that burden being on her at such a young age😔

  • @Neroia
    @Neroia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Just a few more things to add. Ishida's thought of attempt suicide ceased right after he met and asked Nishimiya befriend with him, that's why he slapped himself because the last thing he wanted to do is to hand the notebook he kept for years to Nishimiya as a sign of ending it all. And asking Nishimiya to befriend with him was a mere accident.
The strange facial reactions of Nishimiya when meeting Ishida at sign language school, first smile, then angry, is because she never knew what to react to others' approach. In manga, Yuzuru says, she never sees Shouko shows her anger toward anyone, even being bullied.
Same feeling goes as Yuzuru recalled when Shouko found out she posted Ishida's jump to the river on the internet. Shouko's venting at her. That's why Yuzuru couldn't handle that and fled from home.
Yuzuru kept the shoes Ishida gave her throughout the movie.
Yuzuru not going to school because she wants to be by Shouko's side 24/7. She knows too well what Shouko went through. She hardly saw Shouko's other facial expression than smile. And when Ishida confessed his wrongdoing to her, that was the time Yuzuru started to put trust on him. You can see how her eyes animated just like real people. You don't just stare on his or her face, but to see the person in his or her eyes.
As the movie goes, we know why Yuzuru takes pictures of dead animals. But you may not notice, that after Ishida's full recovery and the two met at his attic room, the two flying birds were captured by a camera, which shows Yuzuru's change as well.
Not to justify Ueno's, but from grade school she already admired Ishida and had a crush on him since then. And perhaps in manga, when Ishida was in a coma, she kissed him. That's why she blames Nishimiya for the loss of friends of Ishida.
In manga there's a letter from Shouko to Ueno after the theme park's incident. I think it better sums up what and how Shouko feels. As a deaf person, she always finds it difficult to know what's really going on in a conversation with other normal people, especially when things getting worse and tense or people turning their face away. Just like Ueno first met Shouko on the street, after the talk, Shouko asked Ishida what they two were talking about. And on the bridge, she waved her index finger to Yuzuru, meaning What or How, asking what's going on there. She maintained her smile because she doesn't want to hurt people by asking too straightly. She piled up those negative thoughts one by one.
Not like movie, Mashiba plays a great role in manga. He was being bullied back in grade school for having thick eyebrows. And questioning Kawai's role as a bystander to bully is whether okay or not.
To most of you surprise, the first time Shouko and Ishida's mom met is at the hospital, where Shouko crying at her feet and begged for the forgiveness. They two never met before this, just like Ueno and Shouko's mom.
And to most of your even surprise, the real first time Shouko and Ishida's mom met was at her hair salon, back in Shouko's fifth grade, before transferred to Ishida's grade school (in the movie the first hair salon shot when Ishida went in, the kid sat there with the megazine was Shouko}. Shouko's mom asked her to have a boyish haircut so she might not get bullied.
Shouko's hairstyle change. The hearing aids are covered with hair. Then ponytail. Finally long hair but no longer covering her hearing aid with hair.
Question about Ishida's sister existence. I remember the author said in an interview, if Ishida's sister were to be shown in the story, it means to affect every role in many levels. I don't know why but kind of understand it, just like Ishida's attempt to suicide or the issue about bully and isolation. But in manga, young Ishida did get beaten up by her former boyfriend (not brazilian one) for something.
Speaking of Kawai, the most dislike one, what Ishida said to her on the bridge in manga is even harsh than in movie.
By the way, I would like to think Ishida has a feeling on Shouko. The words never being said in his confession when holding tight her hand in balcony means something to me.
Sorry for my bad English. Just to share with you my feelings about this the best ever anime movie.

I like how the movie didn't focus on the romance between the two. I think that's one of those parts where the story is meant to be realistic, sometimes the story isn't about the romance. Sure it can pop up but the author made a clear line that it's not about romance, it's about the mental health of a very messed up situation and the coping and overcoming of it. And i like how it shows everyone involved at different stages of overcoming, and showing the very realistic part of some refuse to change.

"The Shape Of Voice" is the direct translation of the original title "Koe no Katachi." The production team for international release prolly decided "A Silent Voice" sounds better in English.
I kinda get what you said about the editing and direction being vague. I guess it doesn't fly the same to all people. I think it was just being subtle. But from what I understand, Shoko already attempted suicide. And her little sister started trying to scare her from it by taking pictures of dead animals. That death is awful.
I feel like there's a bit of a cultural barrier that could not translate well. I'm pretty used to that kind of story-telling so I guess that makes it easier for me to catch on to stuff. But great reaction nevertheless!
Socially, it's just different over there from what I can gather. As much as they suffer, it seems that people over there would still rather not bother anyone nor seek help and just keep to themselves. There's a significantly higher suicidal rate in Japan, and I think this was an insight to how it is to some people there. Not true to life. But an insight. There was a reaction/review done by a therapist and a filmmaker (iirc) and they showered it with praise. I actually recommend watching that video by Cinema Therapy because they put a lot of things into perspective. They even explained the purpose of the scenes which you guys thought were dragged out. Maybe with that, it might explain to you guys how the film connected to a lot of people.
I love Your Name. But I connected to this better on a personal level. Though I don't like comparing them. They're too different.

You somewhat misunderstand Uenos character. She is brutally honest, to everybody. Even herself. She understands that she is not a good person and does not try to convince anyone that she is. That makes her blunt, straightforward and at times somewhat apathetic to emotions of others. From the start she let Shoko know, that she does not want to befriend her and is unwilling to learn to communicate with her. Since Shoko understood this as a miscommunication she pushed against Uenos wishes until Ueno became hostile.
Since Ueno was just a 12yo she had not the capacity to understand Shokos Disease and was not willing to. Which is not a big surprise among young children. She had friends and a boy she liked. Which was Shoya. Since Shoko joined their group all broke up and the friendship dynamic changed. Although this was not Shokos fault, there is never just one person at fault, people bounce of each other like balloons in a pit, that is not how she saw it which is understandable for a child. That concept was simply outside her capacity due to her age.
She saw Shoyas changes and later his bullying not as the fault of Shoya himself and the influence of his peers and then later on as her own fault, but blamed it on the only person that came in as a new influence, namely Shoko. Later on in life there was no reason to contemplate on the past, her mind was set. Shokos influence broke apart her group of friends and later on her suicide attempt caused her friend/love interest to risk death in order to save Shoko, the only person Ueno hated. She was not in the house when it happened, from her point of view Shoya met Shoko again and his life dramatically changed again almost over night, confirming what she already believed in.
Does any of this excuse her? No. But being judgemental just because you have the opportunity to see it from an outside perspective and with the mind and experience of an adult is hypocritical.

So, there is only one time that Shoya called “Shoko” where she was standing at high floors under fireworks, only with specially. But English Dub staffs did not understand deeply original meanings and backgrounds. There is same thing to some of English Subtitle version... Thanks.

I watched this after Your Name back when I was starting with my official weeb journey~ There are parts in the movie that made more sense with the sub if I'm not mistaken~ I understand wanting to watch the dub for convenience tho~ This is one of my favorite anime of all time~ It's so relatable~ The first song was in English too in the sub~ Umeno is actually better than the girl with glasses cause she was honest~ Umeno's character is hard to explain~ She likes Shoya but Shoya was deemed bully by everyone so she just bullied him along with everybody else when Shoko left when they were still children~ She felt like it was Shoko's fault that Shoya got bullied for being a bully which doesn't make sense tbh~ She doesn't try to sugar coat anything which is better than the others~ She is still not all good to me but she's trying to learn sign language and she is trying to reconcile on her own ways~ The sister's dream about Shoko being dead was a sign that someone special to her is going to pass away. The sister woke up from the nightmare and hugged her grandmother which was shown sleeping while smiling but the grandmother actually passed while sleeping~

I was a bully growing up. I just wanted attention, I've always been ignored, at home and at school. To be seen I lashed out at others. I caused just about everyone to dislike me, some tolerated, and a few were obliviously friendly. When I moved up to middle school, everyone from elementary ran for the hills, no one wanted to associate with me. I had classes with a lot of my previous classmates and many people I didn't know disliked me without knowing me just because they heard about my awful behavior in elementary school. It was hard, so hard. Being ignored blatantly where I couldn't even have a conversation with anyone. I felt like something was wrong with me and after all the rage I had for years I just went silent. What else could I do? I didn't talk to anyone, not at home, not at school, not strangers. I failed to develop social skills. My family actively bullied me, it was subtle but looking back my mother and brother were so horrible. All I could do was take it, couldn't console with anyone. Some people would take notice of my strange behavior, rarely would they say anything nice "he's the type to shoot up the school.", or if something bad would happen it was always my fault and I was at the point I couldn't even deny or defend myself for actions I didn't do. When you say it was unrealistic where the girl Naoka in this movie kept coming back to bully Nishimiya and it was unrealistic and didn't make sense and wouldn't happen in real life. Well it does happen, and it did happen to me with 2 separate girls, they were relentless and anytime I thought I was finally feeling okay they would return and just ruin everything. They didn't even go to my elementary school I can only assume they had heard about me from other classmates and just decided to make my high school years as isolated and alone as possible. In my senior year of high school I managed to make 1 friend, but he too was an outcast and eventually took his own life. I started to consider suicide as an option, actually it seem like the only option. My mother is not a good person, but she isn't the worst. When it came to my attempt I found myself waking up in a hospital bed with my mother sobbing asking why why why. It was surprising to me that she didn't know. The child who has since elementary school, locked himself away and rarely interacted with others was supposedly fine in her eyes, her "easiest" child to raise, no problems, the black sheep yet golden child. Straight A+'s, going to go to a college as she had planned. Not as I planned though. There has been little to no communications with others in my life. Not being able to communicate is so difficult, others ostracize you for it and some don't even realize they're doing it

    • @DavidLyles
      @DavidLyles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Even if you aren't perfect and make an attempt no one is willing to give you a second chance, at least in my experience. That's why I like this movie, they give so many chances to correct your terrible behavior, your terrible attempt at communicating who you are, what your feeling, who you want to be. I wish they reprimanded Naoka though, no one reprimanded me or told me to stop my terrible behavior in elementary school, they would just get mad and react at me. Thinking back I don't think I ever heard anyone say "Stop", "Don't do that", all I heard was things like "Boy's will be boys" and "Oh, try to be more kind dear." or "Treat others how you wanna be treated." But that last one was the worst advice because all I wanted was to be noticed. As long as people were paying attention to me I didn't mind. I am a very lonely person, even now I struggle to make friends, I just finished classes that helped me overcome my speech impediments because I hadn't spoken in so long. I think I like this movie so much because I have lived these experiences. Your favorite movie "Your name", I haven't experienced healthy relationships, I've never really had friends, nor a kind family, and I don't feel worthy of other peoples love much less know what love feels like. I can't relate to it at all. Anyway I'm 24 and am doing better now, I guess. I have 1 friend and a decent job. So please do not worry about me. I liked your reaction, becoming emotional and being able to cry is a great attribute that is enviable. Keep up the great reactions.

From an outside perspective it might seem like too much and hard to understand, but as I am a person who has been bullied, believe me, the movie shows very realistically and truthfully what it looks like. There is no exaggeration. The aggression, lack of reaction from peers, tolerance for a bully and their behaviour - it all checks out.
As for the scene where Youzuru wakes up after seeing her sister in pool of blood, I think it was a dream, representation of her fears, not a real memory. And that was a night the grandma died.
There was a lot of symbolism in this movie, so it might get confusing at times. But what I love about it is the message.

I do not believe that "A Silent Voice" is overrated. It has impacted me enough to get started in learning the Japanese Sign Language, which I am still at ten months after I saw this movie for the first time.
What is portrayed in "A Silent Voice" is very realistic in the setting of the Japanese society. My parents are from Japan, and I had the chance to spend some years in the elementary and middle schools over there. From that experience, I can say that the principal characters in "A Silent Voice" are instantly recognizable as being real to anyone who has been immersed in that culture. This movie is superbly successful in conveying that cold reality of a highly homogenous society, in which falling out of the majority feels like death (which, unfortunately, is not merely symbolic in too many cases). That "you are different" or "you are not with us" means the same as that "you do not matter."
Of course, not every person in Japan goes along with this philosophy. And such people are in this movie too, some of whom are rather clumsy in their way of shuttling between the majority and the "rest." That is again very realistic.
That teacher, whom most viewers of this movie dislike as they should, is only typical, being nothing unusual in Japanese schools. There is no exaggeration whatsoever in that portrayal. He would likely be considered a "good teacher" by the Japanese standards. Why? Because he did not let the class get bogged down by the outliers like the nearly-deaf girl and shunned bully. So Japanese.

by the way the green haired girl did bully the deaf girl just like everyone else, she is the kind of bully that wants to be seen as the kind hero when she's not, remember the scene where they were in choir as kids, well she knew shoko was waiting for her to sing so she would know when they're starting, used that and started mouthing the words before she had to, and the cherry on top is that she's not like the black haired girl, the black haired girl has a condition (narcissistic personality which is not curable) she didn't choose to be a shitty person but the green haired girl chooses to be that kind of a person, no condition no nothing she just is and has no interest in changing. When you've rewatched the movie once or twice you'll notice green haired girl is no joke you don't want to be around her, probably even less then around black haired girl.
I noticed you said the movie is overrated, obviously you appreciate and understand it better when you've been through the same, still I personally think it's waaay to underrated there are so many symbolic details in it and the message behind it that not a lot of people seem to get, is beautiful too. The cinematic style in some scenes & the animation is amazing, and the way they portray depression, anxiety, self hatred, acceptance and more is mind blowing to me.

For anyone who has not experienced either the one or the other side, the subject in combination with the Japanese way of narrating such topics might be difficult to grasp at first.
Is this film overrated? Quite the opposite, if you ask me! To deal with topics like these in such an open and multi-layered way cannot be valued highly enough in my opinion. Yes, one can argue about the characters, their actions and pretty much every point of the story, but the bottom line is, the society we all live in is, for the most part and especially on the internet and social media, pretty fuxxxd up. Whether one closes his eyes to it or not is something everyone can decide for themselves. I at least take my hat off to the makers of this film and think it is great in a crushing way. 10/10.
By the way, the film 'I want to eat your pancreas', which has already been mentioned here a few times, is in the same vein and has a similarly high rating for me.

The little sister was not dreaming of Shoko dying. She knows she has been bullied and has been depressed and she has been trying to prevent her trying to resort to that extreme solution. This is why she took those countless photos of dead animals, thinking seeing how gross and pitiful they look would make Shoko stop wanting to die. In the manga it's also shown that their father left them due to the hardships of having a deaf child. That's another reason for Shoko to feel like a burden.
The whole middle school part is wrong on so many levels. No one in that school was prepared to properly deal with a deaf student. The kids are kids. They don't know anything and if they find something weird, they marginalize it and make fun of it. I think the most at fault there were the teachers. Not providing any support to Shoko, but also not teaching the other students.
Ueno, the bully girl - was put to copy all the lessons for Shoko. She was called a "grade schooler" by the fking teacher for reading slow, but then he let Shoko read badly without saying anything (while she shouldn't have been made to read at all). They were a tight group of friends, who had fun together, (and I'm pretty sure Ueno had a crush on Shoya) but then "this special kid that gets special treatment" showed up and ruined everything. I DO NOT CONDONE BULLYING IN ANY WAY, but I don't hate Ueno that much. I don't agree with her reaction but I kind of understand her point of view.
The blonde girl was so prideful and gave off a "goody two shoes" vibe, while also laughing at Shoko and not taking any actions against the bullying.
They were all just kids, with no idea how to deal with these situations they were thrown in.
When the principal came to talk about her hearing aids, their homeroom teacher did HIS DAMN BEST to deal with the issue fast. He pointed out a single student, he was the only one punished and that was it.
That issue could have opened a discussion with the entire class. I think he was perfectly aware that multiple kids were bullying Shoko, and that the rest of the class just stood and watched. I'm not saying the entire class should have paid for the aids, but they could have all used a good talking to.
I personally hate that teacher way more than Ueno.
This is one of my favorite animes/mangas even though it is so hard to watch.

I like how at the end she still is a bitch but she’s starting to show development and some seed of improvement, and with Shoya and Shoko being around her more I feel like her character could get better with time.

A Silent Voice is something you HAVE to watch dubbed. The voice actress for Shoko is actually deaf in real life. Plus the whole "Moon" scene hits you harder when you can hear what she's trying to say.

    • @dragonmaster3030
      @dragonmaster3030 2 ปีที่แล้ว

But at the same time the suicide scene doesn't hit as hard because of how English works and the beginning where Ueno asks if they know Japanese, that second one though is really just a minor nitpick that just makes me a bit confused

    • @bestboyholland3217
      @bestboyholland3217 2 ปีที่แล้ว

No way, the dub ruins it imo. Just because the voice actor is actually deaf doesn't make the quality better, it would be good to get a deaf Japanese person tho voice her but unfortunately that's not the case but the voice actor did a good job. The movie is way better in sub all around

i would recommend to ask or make a pool on weather to watch certain animes in dub or sub next time, since for alot of animes dub is watchable and enjoyable (and sometimes even better than sub) but for other animes its completely different and it misses up on certain details and emotions

I don't justify bullying but still the movie didn't do justice for ueno or naoka unlike the manga
And the dub Honestly made it even worse for her 😂
For kids there are places time and things really precious to them more than anything
And for Ueno the time in elementary school with ishida and friends were her precious moments which started crumbling after shoko arrived
Not saying it was shoko fault
But she felt that if shoko had never been there nothing would have gone wrong
Kid's can't really be expected to cope with a deaf person out of the blue even adults would find it tiring
Personally I really liked ueno as a character it's jst that the movie didn't really do justice for her and the dub specially for me made it worse although it was bad bullying no doubt
But u can see how she holds that time in elementary school so precious she tries to bring ishida and the other childhood friend together she jst wanted to bring back her precious time.

  • @shocktech88

For the amount of emotion that you expressed, it's shocking how shallow you seem to feel this movie is. I love Your Name, I love A Silent Voice. 1 is to entertain you with a beautiful story, the other is to show what misunderstanding and judgment of each other for our differences can cause. I think this movie is far deeper than Your Name. I respect your criticism of the movie but, to me, just feels like because you couldn't relate you didn't try to understand it. A great reaction video, good work y'all, just heavily disagree with your criticisms especially when also comparing this to Your Name or Weathering with You, these 3 are gonna be watched for different reasons.

People still don't know they ruin the whole experience by watching a dubbed version, not only the dub is bad and awkward compared to the original Japanese, but you are also missing a lot of info that the dub can't translate.

if only the teacher would've done something then none of this would've happened, all he did was ignore the problem and did the bare minimum. In the manga, he even mocked Shoko too and he put all the blame on Shoya

This is a good movie, my main complain with this movie is the phasing, because it's all over the place, and most of the people that watched this were so confused, it would have been better if they made it into a series, so most of the scenes wouldn't cramp up.

After seeing a tuns of reaction, I found that many people get confused by the title in the movie
When it translates the name directly from Japanese words to English, it would be the shape of voice
So it just a translate issue, both two are right
But I would prefer “the shape of voice” myself, I think it get a better job done describing the whole main thoughts in this movie
