  • In this episode join me as I climb way down to go test the Emergency Fire Pump. This is all part of normal periodic testing so that when we need a piece of equipment we know it is ready to go.

    Nice to see the "basement" of a ship. That isn't a good job for a person with bad knees, a lot of climbing up and down for sure! Take care and Happy Holidays.

    Do these vessels have a dedicated fire fighting squad? I'd like to compliment you on the condition of you machinery spaces. Granted Diesel Vessels are less complicated.

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there are always 2 squads....One to enter first and squad 2 to be back up or enter a fire second....

    You obviously have to not be afraid of heights to be an engineer on a container ship. The one shot where you looking straight down from the pump room looked very steep.

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, but I think in this space you only go a level at a time, but maybe someone afraid of heights might look all the way down possible.....in which case I'm sure someone else would do

    Always enjoying your small videos. After I have been working as a mechanic at a ship yard for a couple of years for 35 years ago. I can say that I have been to the most places on a ship It’s very nice to se it again And for sure I remember all stairs to climb up an down. To come to the lower part’s of a ship. Wish you a great trip an happy Holliday when it comes

    Hey Jeff, been looking forward to an engineering video for some time. Surprised you don’t have someone up top with a fire hose just to “purge the line”. As you said, you keep the valves open, so I’m thinking the build up of crud over time that can be assisted with a purge out now and again. Best Regards and Happy Christmas. James. 🇬🇧

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes normally ships have something open to relieve the pressure, but for this test it is just on very short time as well causing no issues. Great comment, and Happy Holidays

    Nice view of details of the ship. I was on submarines and I'm amazed at all the waisted space you have there. Not really surprised, but it stands out to my eye.

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't imagine working on sub. That must be so different....

    • @Jv977
      @Jv977 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats the buoyancy! It isn't wasted. On a submarine, the buoyancy control/ballast tanks are outside of the pressure vessel.

    Is any fuses or breakers on that pump? The reason for asking, in commercial buildings jockey pumps are often installed for the sprinkler system that don't use breakers.

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well machinery do have controllers which yes do have fuses if that is what you're asking

    How long does it take.to.learn all these systems in a container ship? It must take years..

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always say learning never ends on a ship and it is true.....for things people are not sure of there are amazing manuals and diagrams for everything to troubleshoot.

    Is there anything to stop someone coming along and locking the hatch when you’re in that area?

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes...I go on radio so people know I am in there....also if hatch is open I take the lock and hide it as a secondary. Third there is a phone in the space to call anywhere on the ship.

    Re those ventilated spaces or they consider confine spaces needing a permit for entry?

    • @JeffOnboard
      @JeffOnboard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is natural and mechanical ventilation
