2013 Toyota Tundra Steering Rack Replacement

  • Hey everyone, I wanted to show you all how I replaced my steering rack on the Tundra. Unfortunately I did not document the step by step process as I went along because that would’ve taken a lot of time to document, but the whole process takes about 6 hours start to finish.
    The only time I really needed a second set of hands was during the reinstallation of the differential just to keep it balanced and slip it into position above the brace.
    Keep in mind that gear oil does cost about $12-$15 per quart so factor that in to your total cost of the job. All in all it is a very straight forward job and removing the front differential is the easiest way to go about it.

      Yeah, considering the fucking Haynes manual told me you have to pull the engine to remove the rack! I almost went and traded my truck in when I read that.

      I have a 2011 2WD and my rack is leaking. Local shop wants to lift the engine and charge 2K to do this. Can you pull the rack with the steering gear attached? Just want to clarify, as Beehive says he didn't remove the gear and other vids said they had to remove from rack to slide it out. @Beehive you were able to slide the rack out the passenger side with the gear still attached?

      As a toyota technician for 25 years i would do this diferntly. Remove the rack end off the rack ,especially the drivers side for access to the lines. Much more room.

    There's now a recall on some steering racks it's Equipment Recall 21TH01. It came out from toyota on Dec 23, 2021 and includes several racks including 44250-OC121, OC131, OC160, OC170.

    I've been researching this and everything I read or watched make it look super difficult.
    Your technique of dropping the diff make it look way more manageable.
    Do you still need to tie off the steering wheel the way you removed the linkage?
    Did you buy a new Toyota rack?

    • @beehivetundra
      @beehivetundra  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s honestly far less daunting than the internet makes it out to be. And the differential is incredibly easy to drop but it is heavy so you want to make sure you can balance it.
      I did not tie off the steering wheel. Once it’s locked in place when the ignition is off was all I did. I did buy OEM. I originally paid for a rack Doctor one but they never shipped it after 3.5 weeks and countless excuses so I went and got one from the dealership instead. Which include a 1 year warranty.

      After dropping the dif you didn’t have to take the steering gear and hard lines? I just pulled my old one off but took off the gear. Im debating on dropping the dif to put the new one on, but I can’t see where it’s gaining any more room to slide past the engine

    • @beehivetundra
      @beehivetundra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daddymikrut sorry I missed your comment. Hope you were able to take care of it. But I did not remove the hard lines or the gear. There is more than enough space to slide the entire rack out fully assembled. If you already removed the gear I would recommend just dropping the differential to reinsert the gear, it’s a struggle to insert the gear back into the rack and reattach the steering shaft back on the gear with the differential in the way.

    Did you have to disconnect your axle from the knuckle when you went to put them back into the front diff?
    Or did you bang in the axle still connected to your knuckle? I'm at the point lol super good video btw

    • @beehivetundra
      @beehivetundra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I left it connected to the knuckle. The key is to make sure the snap ring isn’t damaged or it will make your life miserable trying to bang it back in. What I personally do is I take the snap ring off, put it in a vise to tighten it up and then slip it back into the axle spline and slide it in. After 2 mins or less the ring expands back to its original shape and locks. So you could try that if you want to or just make sure the ring is good.

    You drove that thing back from Moab with no power steering?! I blew mine out last month and went with an AAE rack. They used to offer a lifetime warranty but recently went down to 2 year.

    • @beehivetundra
      @beehivetundra  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the only hard part was leaving Moab as I stopped to fuel up and moving around the gas station was a pain but once on the road it wasn’t bad since there’s no tight turns on the highways.
      Toyota only offers 1 year but I figure I’ll know if the rack is going to hold up within that year so may as well.
