Wave 4’s textures are such a great improvement, that I kinda wish they would go back and update the textures from the previous waves.
Toad Circuit and Rock Rock Mountain/Alpine Pass need it the most, both some how look better on the 3DS.
asking nintendo to do that is pretty much pointless bahaha
@@piranhalettucewell they did go back and update coconut mall so there might be a chance they might update the graphics after all the DLC
@@piranhalettuce AND SNES Mario Circuit 3 and they have really got to make the backgrounds more 3d and more detailed with paths and toad houses, bricks, question blocks, and even have the grass as detailed as the grass out in GBA Mario Circuit and they should update the starting banner massively and even border the start/finish line, and they should reshape those multicolored guardrails from that course, GBA Snow Land, GBA Riverside Park, 1 more GBA course that is not even in 8 Deluxe, and from the SNES course not even being in 8 Deluxe that is not Donut Plains just like those shapes of the multicolored guardrails out in GBA Mario Circuit, SNES Donut Plains 3, GBA Cheese Land, and in SNES Battle Course 1, like, reshape them so that their tops and the 2 sides of them would look flat with four dots, one onto each corner, and they should put so much realistic texture onto those multicolored guardrails from the SNES and GBA courses in the BCP as well
I expect Nintendo to update visuals in around a year when all the waves are done
The line "unless you're trying to do some Paper Mario shit" now really makes me want a Paper Mario themed track.
Me too, but I don't know if I'd trust them enough to make Paper Mario-like models for every racer...
the best thing about birdo is that she actually isnt just a tour port, she has new animations! I really thought she's just gonna have the tour animations but no
Birdo only has 1 new animation. All other animations are just swapped around (such as the 1st place Tour animations being used as the 2nd place DX animation and vice versa)
GCN Waluigi Stadium and Yoshi's Island are definitely my favourite courses from this wave, and I'm hella glad Nintendo is improving with almost each course at a time
Agreed; I’d add Mario Circuit as well because all the races I’ve had on it have been a blast. It and Waluigi Stadium give the best races imo
Foreshadowing
I absolutely LOVED Singapore Speedway's sense of speed! I love those types of tracks, the ones where you get to go fast without a care in the world!
Awesome in 200cc.
Seeing that Yoshi's Island track was just massive nostalgia from when I'd watch my older brother play years ago. This wave was great and not a single bad looking track. DS Mario Circuit is more cartoony than the rest but it actually feels good and reminds me of Super Mario 3D World instead of what Shroom Ridge and Toad Circuit became.
you were right. petey piranha is gonna go right there.
I was about to say that 😂
1:19 bro wasn't lying petey piranha did end up right there
Glad you enjoyed it! Just to let you know the seam in the grass signifys if Lakitu notices if you are out of bounds or not
It's dumb looking and I don't get it, but there's the technical reason I suppose
I feel that making it tall grass or a different color would work better.
Yeah it's ugly though. Kalimari Desert did it better.
They should have made the grass from out of bounds more darker in color
Just like they did with the out of bounds sand out in GCN Dry Dry Desert
Also the thing is that Amsterdam Drift's grass has the grass texture that probably comes from GBA Mario Circuit, but the overall lighting, color correction data, and other post processing data, and the UV model not being worked on ALL make the grass not look as good as the grass in GBA Mario Circuit
YOU WERE RIGHT!! PETEY PIRANHA DID GO RIGHT THERE!!!
I’ve seen all of the most popular Wii Tracks ported to MK8
And seeing DK Summit gives me a lot of hope that Toads Factory and Wii Rainbow Road can make it into the last two waves
Seriously, imagine the improved graphics with those two maps! It would be a dream come true
Rainbow Road is definitely coming but I don't think Toad's Factory has a chance due to it not being in Tour. Koopa Cape is likely
@@MadMaxxed1224watch dry dry ruins get a wwe intro
@@MadMaxxed1224 I NEED toads factory.
@@jumentoqueanima Toad's Factory is my favorite Wii track so I'm just as disappointed 😞.
Actually Bowser's Castle is pretty good...
I want koopa cape but I'm worried they'll ruin it :( so much of it is rocky and rock textures often look really bad (rock rock mountain being best example) or at least overly simplistic. They'll probably also keep the terrible change 7 made to the track where they got rid of the rushing water part with lightning spinners for just a lame underwater half pipe that doesn't feel exciting or fun to drive on like the original did. Although the fact that 8 has rushing water in tracks like big blue, shy guy falls, and wild woods gives me at least a bit of hope they'd bring that mechanic back
1:19 wow looks like petey piranha actually ended up where you said he would😅😆
Oh my god you predicted Petey's roster spot perfectly lmao
fun fact about amsterdam: all the flowers besides the ones in the first row ARE 2d sprites, and they just look like paper if you're at the right angle
3:49 very apparent
AND the row of 2D flowers behind the 3D ones are more modelled than the rows of those 2D flowers behind them
They did do something "similar" to what they did with the bridge on Yoshi's Island
In Hyrule Circuit, if you do all the switches when going down the stairs of the castle, a ramp will appear to let you over the fountain
It's not as big as the bridge and technically not as hard to get, but it is a shortcut you have to do a little side thing to get, instead of just being a mushroom
Loved doing DK summit come back, and Waluigi stadium, loved playing those tracks back on the Wii. Yoshis island is such a good new track too. I’m happy they are also adding new characters, weird they are doing it this late but ehh “better late then never” as the old saying goes.
He was right about Peter piranha lolol
The new characters are genuinely all I needed to make this DLC feel justified. It irked me to no end that they were so intent on recycling tour assets, yet when presented with the chance to fix one of 8's ACTUAL problems - being the Roster- that was SOMEHOW too much effort for them. I'm glad they seem to realize that, all they need to add are Bike animations. Seriously, just give me Diddy and I will shut up about 8's roster forever.
But like you said, the improvements made from wave to wave are astonishing. Not to mention them suddenly actually bothering to balance the "Meta" a bit. If they can somehow go back to waves 1 and 2 and just give it some of the visual love these newer courses got, then I genuinely think we have a solid lineup.
If they made it so that the cars in Coconut Mail do a little spin, I bet they can improve the graphics in the past waves.
@PiranhaLettuce I completely forgot that was added later, haha. It's another sign of them listening to criticism if nothing else!
@@piranhalettuce I've also heard they updated Choco Mountain with more fog and less cartoony graphics when wave 2 released so its very likely.
I couldn't agree more with the visuals. While the texture work on say the buildings are still rough around the edges, the actual colors are REALLY pretty.
Singapore in particular rivals a lot of the base 8DX tracks for me for just the color palette alone.
I can't wait for Waves 5 and 6, especially if the quality keeps jumping up from here on.
Most of the courses we’ve seen so far, look like they got Big Idea,(the creators of Veggietales) to make the courses. That being said, it looks like they’re improving on the stages so far. I don’t think it looks as good as Base 8, but it still looks pretty good.
Super happy to finally see a review that feels as positive about this update as I do.
The improvement from Wave 1 to Wave 4 has been phenomenal!
Wave 5 💀
@@Ma1akai yeah, then Wave 5 happened…
@@TrentonBlessWrestlemania489 And since 1 month ago, Wave 6 happened AND it was DEFINITELY better than EVERY SINGLE wave of the Booster Course Pass and it is the best wave of that entire DLC
Alternative title: Guy explains how the booster tracks can use textures to make stuff look better.
Fun fact, Birdo's model is not the same as Tour's. She even has new animations.
I'd love to see them remake Singapore Speedway from the ground up in a future Mario Kart game, it would look absolutely incredible!
Not to mention actually make the track more difficult
Ok one thing
Most, if not ALL of 8DX’s soundtrack (yes, even the BCP) is done by the Mario Kart Band
You forgot to mention about DK Summit which is a detail lost from Wii:
In Wii, in the first lap it was INCREDIBLY snowy, as in you could barely see anything past what was required. But by the final lap, you could see everything clear as day. Here though, it's bright from the get-go.
Waluigi Stadium has to be my favorite looking track from the Booster Course so far. It almost feels like a base-game track.
Wave 3 takes 1 month to come out a video, wave 4 takes 1 week to a video come out, wave 5 takes 1 week before the release to come a video
Glad to see one of these videos finally recognize Bangkok Rush as a solid track. Feels like every other TH-cam review I've seen has been really hard on it. I mean, it'd help if they didn't cut out a lot of the interesting mechanics the track had in Tour, but it's still got memorable setpieces and a strong layout.
Another small problem: one of the defining features of Bangkok Rush were the Inky Piranha plants that occupied Lap 1 of the track, it’s frustrating that Nintendo omitted them. I expected them especially after Whomos were included in Berlin Byways.
11:10 I completely disagree. You will never convince me the trombones on Riverside Park, the bass on Ninja Hideaway, or the whole band on Toad Circuit and Tokyo Blur are fake. I'd argue the base game was guilty of using simulated instruments more often then the booster course pass so far.
The Yoshi's Island question cloud mechanic reminds me of the hyrule circuit one where the ramp in front of the master sword will only open if you hit all three of the antigravity boosts on the stairs before it.
I like how they changed the snowboarding Mario statue to a snowboarding DK statue in DK Summit, that Mario statue had no right to be there HAHA.
It was like that in tour first
@@Flynnwhite93 Indeed, my friend! 100%! Correct you are, and I am so incredibly happy you understand that information, and that you have communicated that to me! Regardless of where the statue came from first, it is absolutely wild and crazy that I like how they changed the snowboarding Mario statue to a snowboarding DK statue in DK Summit, that Mario statue had no right to be there HAHA.
I never noticed that the mii wont be in the corner anymore but now that you mention it that is going to annoy me 😂
you were right about petey pirahna
1:19
I'm surprised that this is true
I would be down for a Battle Course DLC. Especially if it was mostly consisting of Wii's Battle Courses
UNFORTUNATELY that didn't happen
So the Green sections shows where you can go off road and where you cant. It helps visually for both players and developers
So in general, you are correct that the vast majority of content they put into the Booster Course Pass is modified from Tour. But I do want to mention that there is one exception. One exception might not be enough to set expectations for the future, but it still establishes precedent for non-Tour content. Waluigi Stadium is not currently in Tour, there's no current plans to put it in Tour, and based on the glow-up it received, that seems to be because this was actually made specificially for the Booster Course Pass. Yoshi's Island is another track that might apply to, but internal data suggests it might be planned for Tour anyway, so really we're just looking at Waluigi Stadium.
Waluigi Stadium's Tour version was seen in the banner datamined with Wave 1 using Tour artwork and leaking upcoming courses
Nope. These tracks are coming
Waluigi Stadium will come to Tour… Cope
Replying again, LOOOOOOL
Regarding your comment on the music...
Unless it's synthetic, it's live recorded.
Everything from the electric guitar on DK Summit to the brass shots on Mario Circuit to the entirety of Amsterdam Drift, Riverside Park, Yoshi's Island, Bangkok Rush and Waluigi Stadium was all studio recorded on real instruments. I think Singapore Speedway is the only track this wave to not feature any non-synthetic instruments. The music is always the thing I most look forward to in a new wave since it's all brand-new live (mostly) arrangements of these classic themes that I'm incredibly fond of
I always enjoyed the booster pass for the sake of more mario kart, but your initial criticisms were on point and it’s nice to see the devs take heed of it
Wave 4 uses live performances for almost all of its instruments outside of synths. idk what you’re talking about with that. Bangkok rush is absolutely performed by live musicians! those are not sampled instruments and achieving that sound, technique, and those horn/woodwind dynamics on a computer would range from tedious as hell to impossible
Best Part is that DK is the statue now in DK summit.
Really enjoying the new DLC and enjoyed this video! Thanks for spending the time to put this together
I was worried at the 1st and second wave, I liked a little of wave 3, and now I'm on board with wave 4 and ready to race.
The tracks are fantastic, but I feel the biggest change was in the character vehicle rebalancing. We can now play in rooms that aren't 80% walugi wiggler and it's fun racing against different combinations.
Considering how much the bcp development team is improving, wave 5 and 6 might have tracks as good if not slightly better then the ogs
This did not age very well unfortunately
@@tiagoferreira4980 no, no it did not 🫡
@@tiagoferreira4980 Yeah, I know, it's sad and unfortunate. And I *REALLY DO HOPE* that *AT LEAST* a couple of the tracks from Wave 6 will have the exact same graphics as in Mario Kart 8/base Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on *EVERY SINGLE FRONT*
With the potential of new characters, here’s hoping for Funky.
For tour tracks, I think it should keep all the layouts, however each lap has a certain colour code, (1=red, 2=blue, final lap=Green) Then depending on the lap YOU are racing on, it will show the colour on the path you take, and each lap it changes the colour and the path.
Wow I’m actually surprised how quick you got this out and surprised you like it so much considering I thought you dislike the city tour maps
Always nice to get our insight
on MK8 from Mordecai himself
Lots to be excited for the next 2 waves.
Had to say: love the thumbnail here, so stylized any eye-catching. The four "waves" are a nice touch
What they should’ve done on the building of Bangkok rush is do what they did in the T version of Bangkok rush 2 and add boards onto the side of the building to add trick opportunities.
played these new tracks today. so much fun!
I don't think looking at a map is ever too great for knowing where to go in a track, the map is more helpful in seeing who is behind/ahead of you, and if a blue shell is coming. Looking at a 2D map that's a representation of the course will probably be less help in learning a track than just playing it and experiencing the layout.
To your criticism of the Mii not being in the bottom right, I present to you the original Mario Kart 8 DLC!
While I havent played it (yet) this wave has by far the best selection of tracks as a player who grew up on the Wii and loved its tracks (hoping for Wii Rainbow Road) and the yoshis island track + birdo is a very nice addition aswell
Waluigi Stadium is such a gorgeous looking track.
Such a good selection this wave. It's the one I've replayed most. I was one of the few people that wanted Bangkok Rush and Singapore Highway when they showed up in Tour, but i never expected them so soon, and both of them at that!
Stages like DK Summit and Yoshi's Island speak for themselves. They're very fun.
My favorite track is definitely Singapore Highway though. If it looks that good coming from Mario Kart Tour, then I'm just imagining how it'd look like with base MK8's visuals. And I know It's probably not going to happen, but i hope Singapore gets that overhaul in whatever next Mario Kart we're getting.
To be honest, I always thought that Mario Kart 8 was style over substance. The base tracks from that game do look amazing but most of them just don't have that much going on on the actual track compared to the background. I think they focused more on the presentation than the actual gameplay. Mount Wario may look nicer, but DK Summit's mountain section will be the more memorable one for me any day. That little village in the background at the end is nice, but what does it really do for me gameplaywise?
As much as you guys want to see tracks like the ones from previous waves updated with better visuals, I would just as much like to see a track like Wild Woods get updated to actually be interesting. How is it possible that with everything going on in the background that there is not a single actual obstacle on the track aside from like, one barrel?
1:15 I don’t know why people say Diddy kong is a safe bet. He’s not that popular, and barely anyone plays him in mario kart. (Though to be fair you could say the same for birdo yet she got in so idk)
Cause Diddy is at this point a staple, they even apologized for not including him in MK8 og version
Singapore Speedway might just be my favorite track in the game
I know this is beyond nitpicky but I much preferred DK Summit in a snowstorm like it was in MKWii, same with Waluigi Stadium being at sunset.
The fog clearing out as the race went on was so nice.
6:15
Back in the Wii U era, Nintendo had to make a really quality game to get people to go out of their way to buy a console and the game (hence why breath of the wild was so good)
Now, the attitude is “ok cool new mario game”
Petey piranha is right here
I’m glad Birdo gave this her official endorsement
I am still hoping beyond hope that Wario Colosseum from Double Dash and Airship Fortress from DS are added. It’s a crime that those two tracks have never been remade in any Mario kart
If hypothetically, Wario Colosseum came back, I'd definitely rejoice. Ultra based track. Airship fortress is amazing as well.
Also, Airship fortress has been brought back in both 7 and Tour
1:22 IT'S NOT JUST ME?!?!
The OST is still made by da big band.
Just the other day I was thinking when the SilokHawk video for this 4th pass was gonna drop and here we are
7:05 oh, so it DOES do something! I tried hitting it with a green shell and it didn’t do anything, but it looks like I just have to fly into it!
TBF Singapore speedway had to be vibrant, because the city-state it's based on is very stunning at night.
My theory is that the last character will be from another franchise so they will fit in with the others on the bottom row. I'd like Kirby or maybe even Captain Falcon to join
They mentioned that they are only adding characters from past games, but ROB was in DS and he would make sense for the crossover row, so hopefully they add him.
@totalradlad366 yeah but they also said they were never going to add characters so who knows
1:30 IT'S GONNA BE R.O.B!!!
IT'S GONNA BE R.O.B!!!
IT'S GONNA BE R.O.B!!!
IT'S GONNA BE R.O.B!!!
tour doesn't do crossover characters
The music is all still live recorded - tracks like DK Summit maybe not, but so is Neo Bowser City, it just fits the tracks electronic feel better.
I think the electric guitar in DK Summit was recorded live, but the rest of the song definitely was.
Definitely the best Wave so far. It actually has me excited about what they have in store for Wave 5
I'm happy u actually acknowledge that yoshis island was datamined in tour
1:22 you are not the only one unfortunately
I'm glad they moved the miis with Wave 6
I’ve been waiting for this ever since that yoshi island trailer
The only complaint I have about DK Summit is just the dumbest nitpick. It's that there isn't the slight fog filter
honestly my only nitpick about DK's Snowboard Cross is the mini snow hills are too big and don't launch you up high enough.
Finally. Needed a video while eating
I might be tripping but it seems they're actually listening. Each pass is dramatically better than the last and they also released a new character and even a fucking balance patch, the absolute LAST thing I expected to see in a Mario Kart game of all things. I hope the trend of each pass getting better keeps going to the last two, because this is amazing.
As a kid da Mario circuit was one of my favs, and I've been playing it endlessly. Such a good track 🤤
DS autocorrects to da for you too? Huh, I thought I was the only one.
1:19 holy shit
With the miis on the roster like that it's not actually bad my cousin doesn't have the bcp and all the characters have the classic eshop square around the character
Riverside Park has one of the best songs of the game period. It is low-key amazing~!
0:40 Imagine one of the hidden characters is the Mii suit
I think I'm equally as excited for a new wave as I am for the SilokHawk review vid.
4:47 for a second I thought you were saying you ranked it first because I thought you were focusing on the first place sign.
Though some of your critiques on simple textures can borderline on nitpicking, most of them are right. More detailed textures can go a long way on making simple geometry look way better. Even some bump mapping can trick it to giving more detail without spending too much power

Kirby Air Ride For Nintendo Gamecube
Chapter 1: *Kirby Air Ride For The Nintendo GameCube*
Chapter 12: *Goof Troop For The Super Nintendo Entertainment System*
For those who don't get it, there are chapters in this video. Hover/tap over the video screen and look at the bottom. That's how you see 'em.
I've been fond of New York, London, and Berlin Byways, but these 3 city tracks are GENUINELY amazing this time around. Dynamic and scenic.
The only one I'm not "excited" by is Riverside Park. It's not bad--I LOVE the Ptooies and rising cave waterfall turn at the end--but it's got the Sky Gardens problem of being shortened from the original. Oh well, it's still okay.
In my opinion I still think Wave 3 is better than Wave 4. The track selection was strong (besides the tour ones) the customization items were an awesome addition, some of the courses looked good as the original 48 (not rock rock mountain & tours) And we got 3DS Rainbow Road! My most requested track in the entire booster course pass & mostly likely others as well. Wave 4 is great! But it won't take the crown that is wave 3.
I mean, it was probably fair to expect the overall track complexity and strength to take a huge hit from wave 3, considering it’s starting a new row of cups
This wave is so hype Wave 4 is the best Mario Kart has been since Mario Kart Wii
To be completely honest I've hated the Tour tracks so far. I didn't like them at all....
... Until I saw Singapore Speedway!
That track was absolutely breathtaking, completely made me change my mind! It really reminds me of Levincia from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Gorgeous, just gorgeous.
