- The pros and cons of living in Sweden: I went to the streets in Stockholm and asked Swedes
(and foreigners) what they think is the best and worst thing about living in Sweden. Usually it's foreigners sharing their opinion on life in Sweden (from what I've seen on TH-cam) so I thought I'd be fun to share what the Swedes had to say for a change. Hopefully this gives somewhat of an insight of what you could expect if you'd like to travel or potentially even live in Sweden in the future.

Temperaments and preferences carry over from heritages, I have english and nord heritage and I hate talking to people .
Everyone thinks I'm dumb, and in my family too. I came to watch this video to see if everyone has this temperament.
As a Swede, I would say that the best thing is "Allemansrätten", i.e. the freedom to roam in nature. The worst is November: Rain and darkness (as there is no snow then)
You are so right.. I completely forgot about that! When my girlfriend said we could camp on someones private property as long as you are a respectful distance away and knock on the door and let them know its totally fine.. and they were totally ok. Picking Kantarell, hjortron & lingonberry was so much fun too.
I agree. Allemansrätten is awesome. And the worst thing is that you have to conform 100% to the rules dictated by society/government, otherwise everyone will think there's something wrong with you if you don't.

@@dazaman11 In Sweden there is a phenomenon called jantelagen meaning if you deviate somewhat from the norm people will dislike you. It doesn't have to be that you're disturbing anyone it's just a bias most Swedes have for some reason. It doesn't really affect you tho since the worst repercussion you'll have for breaking it is an angry stare or a quiet mutter

@@maryd2934 I am a native Swedish speaker, and for me growing up in America the best way to learn was exposure and speaking with other swedes.
@@maryd2934english and Swedish are both in the germanic language group. You have a lot of everyday words that stem from Old Norse.
My family is Swedish but I live in London. Over the last 20 years I have seen a gradual deterioration in the country. There is vastly more social unrest and visible signs of poverty, which I didn’t see in my youth. Something has changed and it makes me very sad.

I am a New Zealander who lived in Sweden for six months, I would say my favourite things were how amazing the public services (public transport, maintenance of cities, urban planning) is, as well as the emphasis on sustainability, healthiness and equality! My least favourite things are the horrible winter weather (I lived in Skåne so it rained a lot too) and how reserved/cold people are to strangers.

@@annicaesplund6613 not shy, due to us Swedes spending 6-8 months every year mostly indoors that's just how our culture developed. You can see similarities in other cold countries and warmer countries tend to be more open.
People do however say that once you become friends with a Swede, its a friend for life.
Been to Sweden 3 times.
I always go when it’s cold and such, regardless of the cold, I totally fell in love with the country, its people, its language, its culture… I’d love to move to Sweden someday. Been to many places, but never ever felt like I was home except for Sweden.

The worst thing I would say is the complexity of social life including (dating, making new friends, meeting new people, relationship with neighbors). The perception of making friendships is very complex for internationals and even for many Swedes, which leads to a sense of loneliness and less acceptance in the society. The rest is Fantastic
An interesting topic and interesting answers from your fellow Stockholmers. I moved here 3 months ago, in the middle of winter (I live in the North) and I bought a house and brought my 2yo baby kid and my husband. I will answer your question too - Things I LOVE about Sweden and some reasons why we moved here - clean fresh water, air, People taking care of the nature and their surroundings in general, People are considerate and maybe a little shy and closed up, but kind and helpful even here in the north.
Things I don't like are the bureaucracy, The long waiting lists for everything (we are waiting for 8 months for a dagis...now to be a förskola), But pretty much everything else with this country is great!
We chose to live here because I am resonating a lot with the culture and the values of the Swedes and want to raise my daughter in a normal , nice, good and caring country. And even tho we will be emigrants forever here... Better to be emigrants in a good country than to be no-ones in our own shitty country who does not take care of it's citizens!
So my answer to your third question is the North of Sweden where it's cozy in the winter and we have northern lights every two nights and so light and bright in the summer when the sunset and the sunrise are the same hand in hand and dancing in the pink sky!

@BRIMZ619 I relate to this so much! My grandpa moved to America when he fell in love with my Nan! He died before I could become fluent. My partner and I are on a journey together to become fluent and move there. I grew up with a lot of swedish culture and I spoke a little before my grandpa died. I can understand some of basic conversations and even reply in swedish. 3 year goal now hopefully we can do it!

@@mdnazmul-vm9ibyeah man, i'm from Latam and I'm not even living in a very northern country like Sweden but the winter is very rough and dark as hell. The sun is only "out" (when it's not cloudy which is like 80% of the time) from 9 to 17 or even less
Ive been in Sweden in several seasons, the pros is that summers are amazing! So many lakes and beautiful nature, it’s safe, high quality of life, clean Cons: dark winters, coldddd
There's no bad weather, just bad clothing. Layers. Winter boots. Longjohns. Hat. Gloves. If you have cold feet nothing helps.

The worst thing in Sweden at the moment is the increase of crime, in the town I live in there is attempt of murder atleast 2 times a month or someone gets physically abused. You really dont want to get out of your home during the evenings and night cause you never know if someone is gonna jump or rob you. The crimes has increased exponentially after we have been taking in immigrants mainly from the middle eastern during 2015 and so on, and it makes a little bit of a culture crash where the immigrants dont have the same values as we swedes do. But I dont want to focus as much on the misbehaved immigrant I know alot of people who comes from the same places and is friendly, peaceful and make great friends with.
i visited Stockholm once, it was pretty good place. On my next visit (whenever that comes) i would like to visit kolmården. theres a roller coaster called wildfire and i rlly wanna ride it. greetings from ur neighbor, Finland

that’s so nice to hear! Sweden is great but I would advise you not to move to certain areas in Sweden. some areas here are rising rapidly in crime rates. but for the most part it is still pretty good :)
by the way if you are considering moving to Malmö (which is really close to Copenhagen meaning you can easily travel back and forth to UK) i could tell you anything you wanna know about this city :)

@@zainulabdin1720 well it is kinda hard to say exactly which cities are good but i live in Malmö so i can tell you a lot about my city. it is very mixed. a lot of different ethnicites live here so it’s very diverse but sometimes that can cause conflicts. we all come from different cultures and have grown up in different ways so we have different point of views. but for the most part people are pretty quiet and don’t talk to strangers. Lund, a city near Malmö would be my favorite Swedish city. it is very calm, very beautiful and smaller than Malmö. their crime rate is much lower and there are also less immigrants and diversity but still a lot compared to northern Sweden. Lund is about 20 mins with car from Sweden so you can still travel to Malmö easily. i don’t know much about other cities further up in the country but i would say south is the best because you can get to both Denmark and Germany quickly. Germany takes about 3-4 hours with car/boat (you can get your car on a boat) and from Malmö to Denmark is less than an hour with car. if i remember correctly about 15 mins with train. the capital, Stockholm, is nice. there is more to do, more to see, it is kinda the same as Malmö but bigger. if you can ask more specific questions i can try to answer them better! this was all i could think of at the moment

I visited Sweden last November and the weather was horrible! 😆Haha. Grey skies, cold, wet, nasty slush snow, sunset by like 3:30 p.m. ish. I am visiting again in June for Mid-Sommar and moving to Farsta hopefully before the end of the year. I hope I can deal with the cold and grey skies 😅
The people are very nice and interesting culture. Though the language is quite difficult to learn. 😬

I' ve been in Stockholm in 2000. Beautiful city , nice people and the girls are gorgeous . The place was a bit boring to be honest , the cold is not for me. I could never live there . Their mentality is too different from mine . I'm latin man.

There are almost NO scandinavian models anywhere in the industry. why?

I am Swedish but didn't feel like I belonged anymore so I expatriated. Sweden has changed too much since I grew up in the 70s and 80s.
Best with Sweden is Allemansrätten. Worst with Sweden is how the last 30 years of politics have ruined it, the high taxes, the over the top welfare, the extreme immigration, and the enviro extremism.
I grew up in New Zealand in the 70s and 80s as well. I left in 89 to move to Australia and have lived in America full time since 98. Your "worst" aspects of Sweden are my reasons for not returning to New Zealand(or Australia) to live(plus insane housing costs). The last time that my wife and I visited New Zealand and Australia was 2019. I was blown away by how socialist and feminized both countries had become. There was a very evident anti white male/enviro extremist/globalist/dumbing down of so many people. Interestingly, post covid, a lot of people have woken up from their indoctrinated slumber and are starting to seriously question who their Govt is actually working for(WEF). I fear that it may be too little, too late though.

I'm American and go to Sweden for about a month every year since 2004. I would say the beautiful city/country side, cleanliness, u can drink water from tap, calmness of the people, law abiding people, kebab pizza, swede pastries, people drive lawful most of the time and my wife is from Sweden
Cons: people can be unfriendly, u have to pay for parking and going to bathroom most of the time.

As a Swede the best thing is: The good standard of living in a democratic country, with equal opportunities in terms of school, health care, give birth to children, vacation days etc. Everyone has the opportunity to live a good life.
The bad thing: I hate November when you barely see the sun or daylight in weeks. Waking up feeling shit, go to bed feeling shit. Wouldn't mind to escape November in Sweden every year.
Try to go on vacation in Nov like Spain Italy Greece Portugal Malta etc is good for you ❤

As Italia I think it's crazy only one of the interviewed people mentioned the welfare in sweden.... it's the best thing they have. Also nobody mentioned their politicians are efficient and really work for the best of the country. Probably they don't understand how bad is the political landscape in the south of europe. However their worst thing is the social life, people are kinda shut down and off course the lack of daylight and the weather.
Yes north and south Europe is quite opposite, in case of south Spain Italy ...good weather, better family values,less Racism, beaches, activities to do, people are hospitable, good social life, good food, beautiful landscape culture and lot of history but bad things awful politics, low wages, corruption, no welfare like quality education pansion plan,some cities are not clean and maintain properly, ........on the other hand in western countries ( like north of Europe) Sweden.... Personal space, good thing welfare state, work life balance, clean environment , free education free health care, child care, good infrastructure, govt plans best for citizens, very low corruption, transport is good, stability, equal rights, freedom, ......on other hand Racism, strict immigration policies, cold weather, reserved people, high tax, no social life, low population, housing shortage, food quality is not good, lack of family values, non religious, & loneliness......

As an American who moved here a year ago, I don't miss at all the small talk. I'm actually embracing the Swedish honest approach of being real. Also, the food is fantastic, high quality.
As a naturalized Swedish citizen myself, I would say I love the pristine nature in Sweden, its amazing, family friendly policies for parents like myself are incredible and one last good thing are the native Swedish people, so humble and peaceful, such a pleasure to co-exist with. On the negative the social life sucks, food options aren't great, but can be good if you are willing to spent a bit more and go to nicer restaurants. Groceries on the other hand are readily available in a diverse array in supermarkets if you are good at cooking. One last thing I really hate are the unnecessary bureaucracies like housing queues, systembolaget, building codes etc

@@user-cf3cv5oc5j The crime rate is just in media, in actual reality, crime rate in Sweden is lower than most European countries, gang related violence is different from crime rate if thats what you are referring to, but where I live I don't really experience that, its concentrated in a few hot spots in bigger cities. But also Swedish crime statistics account higher because in Sweden every petty crime is reported as crime, like say pickpocketing, if it happens in Sweden thats a major crime, but if it happens in Italy or Spain, it barely gets reported. In reality we know you are far more likely to face such petty crime in Southern Europe than Sweden.

6:45 That’s the most bs I’ve heard. I talk with strangers all the time, and people are so kind and generous to eachother. We might not sit next to somebody on the bus and talk to them like their a friend, but we still talk to eachother in many suitable occasions.

In Swedish? I was in Sweden in 1988, and before I could open my mouth to order at a restaurant, the waiter spoke to me in perfect English. All my cousins could speak English, from married with kids to their school age children. Even two of the older cousins - my parent's age - could get by in English.
Only visited Sweden 3 times. Stockholm twice and Gothenburg once. I like the nature the most and the least the difficulty to make friends. Even at a bar people are so closed off. Or they are completely drunk and tell you too much. There is no middle ground it seems. Not my cup of tea.
I am Dutch btw, people can be rather closed off here too, and here it is not my favorite part of the culture either 😅

@@Ge0rGi. Personally I don't feel too comfortable with really drunk people anyway because many have bad drunk moods. I only go to concerts these days. No more pubs.
As an American that’s been to both Italy and Sweden, when the woman mentioned food, shopping, architecture, and lots of water as things she prefers about Italy, I found those things to be just as good if not better in Sweden. I guess it’s a matter of taste, but for me, Scandinavia in general has been my favorite place to travel.

I don’t mind cold weather. I’d 100% rather live here than one of those less developed warmer countries. I live in the southern part of Sweden, so it doesn’t really get that cold here.
Wear some thick clothes and do your things outside, it’s not a big deal. You’ll spend most of the time inside anyway.

I just moved from Chicago to Göteborg and have to say that the winters aren’t near as bad here. Definitely more reserved and quiet here, especially on public transportation. The summers are absolutely perfect. Sooo clean here and the air is so fresh. So much to do in the city.
I lived for one year in Lund and just moved to Belgium. The nature, the sky, the light, the sea are wonderful, not in all seasons of course. Also the fact that you have more space and it is quiet, it‘s not overly populated like The Netherlands and Belgium. The health care system is too harsh for me. I had an emergency and I was treated horribly. But my GP was helpful sometimes. They are not nurturing people and you feel that when you get sick and need to be taken care of. The food is just bad. There‘s nothing good about the food culture. The language is ok to learn, it just takes time and effort. The people are reserved, so it’s hard to meet Swedes. A lot of foreigners move to Sweden because everything is free for their kids. All in all I would visit it again but I don‘t know I would ever come back to live there.
Food is bad compared to what though? I'm guessing you're from Romania. At least in the bigger cities there are plenty of restaurants to choose from with Indian, chinese, Turkish etc, and the prices are lower than Belgium aswell
The traditional Swedish food. I don’t even like the Romanian traditional food. Yes in Stockholm and Göteborg I found better food than in Lund. Still, it’s not like Italian food where I could eat everything.

I wonder if the younger generation are more "social" than the older? Do younger friends ever gather to play cards, or go on a hike or camp together? It seems a bit sad that such a beautiful group of people do not share more of their lives together. I am american, of Swedish ancestry and must admit, learning more about Sweden has helped me understand my American family (older generation) better ..their stoicism.

As a visitor, my strongest impression was how clean and well cared for things are. There's hardly any litter to be seen, no buildings or streets were crumbling or dilapidated, nothing was ugly. Even things that weren't pretty, like public toilets, were at least very clean and in good shape. I don't recall seeing any police roaming the streets or hearing any sirens, presumably because there's less need compared to my country. I had an argument with my boyfriend and went out walking by myself and felt no fear whatsoever. Security was by the harbor, they watched me but let me roam around and didn't question me. Also, Sweden has better coffee and beer than the US, and after hearing how expensive Sweden is, I was actually shocked how cheap groceries were. I also think Swedish coffee and beer are better than American. Also, Scandinavians are more accepting of introverted temperaments; silence is okay and you don't have to perform. Outside of the strangeness of being a foreigner and not knowing what is expected of me in social interactions, which I would get over in time, I feel like it's easier to be myself here and not being judged about whether I'm smiling enough or sufficiently outgoing. Being chill and low key is absolutely fine with Swedes, not wanting to talk is perfectly acceptable. Also, I love fika culture and dagens lunches.
On the downside, I don't like the way the windows open outward and don't have screens, and I don't care with the two mattresses on one bed frame, in intimate situations you end up in the crack sooner or later. There also wasn't much to choose tv. It's difficult to meet people there, and day to day interactions with people are fewer, but you know that. Also, your pizza doesn't have enough spice.
As an person that lived there for 3 years I can agree with you 100%. Everything that you said is true and I was impressed the most by clean streets and nature (in small and more traditional towns, maybe not the case for Gothenburg 😅). Also they are really advanced in IT technology, a lot of people speaks english very well. And like some people said i think the number one advantage of Sweden should be nature that is free for everyone (you can camp in the woods, lakes, private fields -you just need to respect it in human way and you need to respect privacy of other people and you will be fine 😊)
And I forgot one more thing. During Covid time they were open country, they didnt forced you to wear mask or be vaccinated and for me that is 🤯

@@leob4403 It only has pepperoni if you order it with pepperoni and there are different styles of crusts which vary in thickness- New York, Chicago style, Detroit style, thin crust, flatbread, etc. My favorite pizza is barbecue chicken, chicken alfredo, or Hawiian, which do not have pepperoni. There are as many topping options as you have- no bananas though.

I lived in Sweden for 2 years now, and I think the best things are the nature, quality of air, weather (I like the snow and moderate summers), welfare, kardemummabullar, and crossing roads even if the light is red. Worst things are people (social life, not outspoken), food, housing (in Stockholm), prices-salary proportion, and criminals.
They should encourage bike culture, not be scared of small talk, and be more straightforward.
People will speak with you if you approach them.with confidence and respect
I visited Stockholm from Australia last year in early September. I am female aged 36. I would say on first impressions I felt I was in the nordic version of Italy. My favourite thing was the incredible architecture, the old buildings, the extremely stylish people (like the Milanese but blonde :) ) the food, the amazing parks in the city. The worst part was the museums were expensive and not actually good at all, the younger people (maybe the ones in their 20s) were EXTREMELY rude. Shop assistants who would give me death stares for asking a question and refuse to smile, as if I personally insulted them! It was totally uncool, and I have visited many countries across Europe and lived in London for 5 years before. So I don't think being Swedish is an excuse for that. But the older people I spoke to or asked directions from were totally friendly and normal.

Most Swedes, regardless of the city, usually speak quite decent English. You'll be fine.

The worst part is we pay insanely high taxes on everything, horrible people running the country, you get really low pension when you retire after working until you are 65+. Winters are way waaay too long especially in the north. The best part is when it finally is summer, its really beautiful!

The best is the nature and allemansrätten, should be a human right tbh. The worst are the cold people, very lonely, and the lack of things to do (unless you live in big cities, but the housing prices there are insane).

People in Sweden need to be grateful for what they have. In the USA you can lose your job and end up in poverty! I’m one of the few lucky ones in the USA with a decent pension and healthcare at age 66. If I were age 25 again I would leave the USA and move to Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, or Austria. I have been living in Sweden for more than 4 years now. What I can say. The country of the magnificent nature and outstanding traditional architecture (traditional red houses), Swedish people are very sporty and have a unique culture. I also love Swedish metal and Swedish films, they are also unique in their kind. On the downsides, I feel for these french ladys that were talking about services, it looks like in Sweden people are not interested to make a good experience for other people. It goes not only for restaurants, but also for delivery services, taxi, etc. In all my life I have never experienced such a bad service as in Sweden. It is complicated to name any reason for that, I think it is just a part of the culture. Also then it comes to complaining about this, swedes do not understand because they think that they are the best in everything and this type of the service is normal while it is not. Tax burden, as one man in the video said, is just ridiculous including payments for state TV and radio and church.
Maybe service is not so good here in Sweden, because people feel kind of safe and relaxed here and we are more introverted, so they don't over do it, they are more themselves, and might lett their natural state of being shine tough instead of kissing ass... Just my first thought. I'm a people pleaser, so I love to give service! But it's not a good thing to be a people pleaser, I know. Lol

Too much waiting times in public services. to be able to get a residence permit(for them to assign a case officer to my application) i had to wait 12 months. When i finaly get here they accepted me but not my family for an idiotic reason. OK since i'm here i thought it would be faster if i apply family union and bring them but to be able to do that i had to have a personnumber. I had my residence card but there is no such number on it. Why not? so when i applied they told me in between 4-14 weeks you'll recieve a word from our department..:) what? there are 10 weeks difference in between them your not saying 4-5 weeks. As soon as i get it i'll apply for my wife and child but god knows how long would it take too. :( so worst thing i can say is public services definetly need labor. Living in UMEA so cold is expected eventhough not tolarable sometimes. Long dark hours are worse to get used to. The rest are OK. People friendly for sure and helpful. People are complaining about violance and crimes in southern parts. Up north there is nearly none of course there are some theft issues we hear but come onnn i'm coming from Turkiye. :)
Well, only a couple people had like a real opinion and weren't vague. There were a couple old men who at least mentioned some political and cultural issues or that person from Lebanon who at least comes from a different culture to compare with. Even the French women had at least some nice input about an environmental aspect and bad service haha, but the rest...seems they are not very aware of how they live or are too scared to offend with their answers.

Winter in southern Sweden is not as bad. It is quite nice actually. It never gets too cold. Summers are absolutely lovely too!

Terrible healthcare is a thing. Biggest lie in Sweden is that they have healthcare. I lived all around the world, worst healthcare ever, almost died here luckily got to Greece and they helped immediately. Reddit is full of terrible stories of foreigners. Swedes are told they should be grateful and dont complain. The ones that never left their country or the continent other than for maybe Thailand and havent experienced hospitals in other countries.
If you really think there is nothing positive about Sweden you need to travel more and gain some perspective of the world or at least make an effort to learn more about the world

I left Sweden because some months before i departed something violently horrible happened to my neighbor Sven. His daughter was raped 4 times in a week by somali and iraqi immigrants when she went commuting from home to school and forth. It is sad to see what the once beautiful country has become now.

As a Swede who's been living abroad for 5 years I would say that the main pros are:
* It is rather well organized in general. Everything from public transport to authorities tend to work okay, most of the time.
* The welfare services.
* The nature.
* "Free" higher education.
Some cons:
* Taxes. (Although, I must say you actually get something back, such as e.g. "free" higher education.)
* The climate. (At least 6 months per year are terrible.)
* Too much immigration and a complete inability to fix issues.
* Incompetent politicians.
* Political correctness.
Det viktigaste problemet måste vara de fruktansvärda saker som har kommit från den fruktansvärda invandringspolitiken. Jag skulle bli förvånad om ingen i Stockholm svarade på det. Maybe that's what some meant with their comments. Outside of Stockholm-even though it has a lot of sights-it's wonderful, especially most places near Östersjön.

This is a super hard question. But after thinking for a while, I’m proud to be Swede because the culture of “lagom”. Just the right amount of anything. That includes decency, selfishness, sharing, respect and taking proudness in your own product. You can generally trust both people and government that they want good. That is something that can’t be overrated.
Worst. Housing prices are going insane, politics has become short sighted, and in the tracks of this over believing in privatization has sold out what was the strength of our society to international companies only thinking about milking tax money. And non working integration or follow-up on immigration, people who doesn’t understand the concept of Lagom.

It depends on your personality and preferences. If you like cold weather and country side, so Sweden is the best. Otherwise, steer away from it. I would not trade Malaga with any city in the world.. Sometimes I get bored with the nice weather here. Viva España.
