I've had the MK1 since it released years ago. Still the best camera I've ever owned. The 4K and the slow motion footage of the helicopters was an awesome touch; I've worked on helicopter engines for the last 15 years and watching the blades go by that slow will always impress me. Thank you for this great video.

Well nas / Jerry Inman, What the hell are you two mumbling about? It didn't even have phase detect until the V. The body is almost unchanged, and has been such for six years, keeping costs down. The processor hasn't been changed in a while either, and it's based on silicon that hasn't been in a phone for years. Nothing about this camera is special, a fucking cellphone can shoot in 4k 60p, yet this (and all Sony cameras so far!) cannot. The little POS overheats after five minutes of shooting! Their engineering and feature development is lazy at best and directly insulting at worst. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get one eventually. But to claim that it in any way is worth what they're charging is patently absurd. They've carved a niche for now, but sooner or later the big two will stop fucking around and release competent responses, and then Sony will have to start actually giving a shit about developing this awesome little thing they made. Wake me when they finally give the RX1 4k. Sony is simultaneously the most innovative, yet most lazy company I know of.

The audio is was a bit echoey. The picture was descent. The 240fps was amazing for a point and shoot. No bokea, and it could use a wind scree. Thanks for the review Casey!

Watched in 4k, with KRK 10-3 studio monitors relaying audio. For a point and shoot the camera is genuinely impressive. Even the audio was above par. The price is a stretch however. If I were in the market for a Canon G7X mark II for $700, i'd gladly spend an extra 200-250 for this Sony. At 1200 there's just no way it's a smart investment, no matter how you put it. Really good informative video. I know the price is stumbling block for many but after spending 17 days lugging my Canon T4i and lenses through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, I see the amazing virtue of this camera. You've convinced me to buy one.
The slow mo is cool at 240fps and yeah it looks good really. I like my 80d though to even go up at the minute wouldn't be, for me personally budget wise alone, wouldn't be worth it. Plus I'm liking learning alone about shots I can capture in manual focus, thank you for the in depth look at this Casey! KB

Had the first version of this camera, and it has been a champ getting awesome photos and videos. If you are interested in the RX100 series, the older ones are still on sale, so go choose which one fits your budget.
That’s a shame about the lack of mic input. I wouldn’t pay that much for a point and shoot with bad sound. It would have been a great camera for a travel filmmaker! Would love to have seen some low light shots Casey!!
How does the LCD screen flip in the back? From the reflection in the mirror, it looks like it flips 180° upwards, but it’s not totally clear. Also, it would seem to me that the absence of an external mic jack would be a dealbreaker for virtually anyone willing to spend this amount of money on the camera...
Rami Abdulhai I agree with that, but an external mic jack wouldn’t add any bulkiness. It would only be the external mic if or when someone decided to plug it in. Plus, you could also use a lapel mic in certain circumstances. At this stage of technology, I think any camera without a 180° flip screen and an external mic jack suffers from a fatal flaw :-)
Love the Sony RX series and the Canon G series point and shoots but considering how much time these cameras have been around with the 1-2 year updates they still do not listen to what the consumers want. 1- A perfect vlogging camera should be compact and 4K. (Ya They got this down) (kinda) 2- A perfect vlogging camera should have a wider lens (yes wider than 24mm) seems they are always 24mm!!!!! 16mm or less should be the norm or an option. 3- should have a mic input for external mic (ya never) 4- good in lowlight (these cameras are already awesome there but maybe getting a bigger sensor would help) 5- more zoom! (Sony nailed it with this one) 6- good image stabilization (I’ve owned both the Sony RX100 V and Canon G7X M2 and the Canon has the best IS handsdown) 7- Quick auto focus (the Sony does a great job here) 8- Last but not least a built in light would be awesome and maybe an IR option like Sony nightshot on the handycam I would legit pay $3k for a super compact camera that had all those things. I know it’s possible. Make it happen someone!

You should check out our comment above if you want another option! Go more in depth there, but we use an rx100 mark iv which has most of the same features but is drastically cheaper.

I have a t3i that I don’t use because I think my iPhone 7 does a better job and is more practical honestly. I've got the IV and I love it. Though I do wish it had the reach of the newer models. Primarily I use to when I don't want to cary my Fujifilm camera/lenses.
100% agree with the huge miss by not having an audio jack. I shoot outside a lot, and the wind noise might be a deal-breaker for me. With a P&S, I don't want to be having to sync audio in post.

OMG, the RX100 (m2) is the camera I've used for years!! I can't afford to buy expensive gear so buying the camera was a gamble for me. No regrets so far and for you to highlight the camera is validation for me. Mahalo!

Eddie and Val I think the dealbreaker is that it doesn’t have an external mic jack… That’s a nonstarter for most serious videographers - which is presumably who they’re targeting with a price tag of $1200!

I've got the IV and I love it. Though I do wish it had the reach of the newer models. Primarily I use to when I don't want to cary my Fujifilm camera/lenses.
100% agree with the huge miss by not having an audio jack. I shoot outside a lot, and the wind noise might be a deal-breaker for me. With a P&S, I don't want to be having to sync audio in post.
so what you're sayin' is i can get all three of those "camera stuffs" in ONE point and shoot?
(on a more serious note, i need more than a wide angle vlog lense" i just use a gopro and my phone for other shots so far)

Superb review and as always very entertaining… Love the p&s sony, but have you ever tried the RX10M4? Of course bigger, but also a very good compromise in lens, quality and price… my favorite cam on the go
OMG, the RX100 (m2) is the camera I've used for years!! I can't afford to buy expensive gear so buying the camera was a gamble for me. No regrets so far and for you to highlight the camera is validation for me. Mahalo!
Failed to mention it's worse in low light than the rx100 V, cos its no longer f1.8 and also no ND filter which makes it worse in night and day video.

And still over heats. They just slapped a better zoom on the thing and ignored all the problems, then for good measure just took out the ND filter
Well, I have used the RX100 IV for 2 years and it still works great....took it with me everywhere, everyday.....but gosh darn that extra zoom hooked me!
