Jovie I had ADHD in school and its also inhibited my ability to learn at the university level. I did good in college but...I made a mistake STAYING in the united states. I bet your quality of life is much better in Denmark then usa. I wished I left 20 years ago and tried out different countries to settle. Usa sucks when it comes to the Social Safty Net.

Well done Jovie, the more people like you talk about mental health issues, the more normal it becomes. It gives other people the courage to talk about their mental health. I am sure other people who watch your video will find the courage to seek help.❤

It's amazing that your huisarts recognized that you might have ADHD and referred you accordingly. I suspected that I was on the autism spectrum when I was in my late 30s and living in the U.S., and it was a battle to find medical professionals that would take me seriously and find a place to get assessed. I had to do it all myself. I got my diagnosis when I was 40.
I just moved to the Netherlands, so I don't know yet what my experience as someone on the autism spectrum is going to be like here yet.

Honestly, in my experience it can be vary a lot depending on who your doctor is. Though overall, huisartsen are pretty good with bedside manners etc, compared to like specialists especially.

ADHD is not a mental disorder, it's a neurological disorder. I feel like it's an important distinction, as calling it a mental disorder makes people who think they might have it often more reluctant to get diagnosis, and it gives too much room for misunderstanding and negative labeling.

    • @tubbywhirr
      @tubbywhirr ปีที่แล้ว

it’s a neurodevelopmental disorder that is part of mental disorders. ADHD is highly comorbid with other major mental health conditions. 80% have at least one other psychiatric disorder. negative labeling is in the eyes of people perceiving mental illness as shameful

I recognise a lot. I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome at age 50. Unfortunately there is no medication against that. I was so well adapted that the only thing I could not do is to save my marriage. Unfortunately some physical problems occured after that, limiting my walking to only 200 meters. So I am mostly at home. Aspergers syndrome is a blessing for that. But, I do have less energy unfortunately. But, I am happy with my diagnosis. All the pieces of the puzzle from 50 years back suddenly fell into place in one stroke. It was amazing. I am very open about my diagnosis. As someone on the autism spectrum, I could not care less what others think of me, provided I do not misbehave (and I don't). That is a treat that is very liberating as well.

I'm Dutch and have struggled with concentration and anxiety my entire life. I've had a handle on it for a while, but being forced to work from home during the pandemic caused the struggles to return in tenfold. Thanks to a lot of recommended TH-cam videos I have recently really started to think that this may be caused by ADHD. This is something that I definitely want to get checked out, but I had no idea what to expect. This video really came at the perfect moment for me, so thank you very much!

I was diagnosed in uni 20+ years ago but never had the support or education that is so critical to understand the diagnosis and it's impact on my life. I recently told my husband I thought I was depressed. Your video has inspired me to start the process. Thank you so much, Jovie, for sharing your experience with us. ❤️

Jovie, I'm not even close to a parent myself but from what I've seen, realizing what you were doing wrong and seeking ways to improve yourself is the strongest thing a parent can do. It's never easy to take a step back and reflect on yourself but it seems especially tough when you have the responsibilities of setting an example for your children. This video is so inspiring, dankjewel :)

Thank you for sharing this!! I am Dutch and was diagnosed with ADHD in my early thirties, when I was in therapy at a psychological center. Years later I started recognising a lot of features of autism in myself. My huisarts, although he is also a licensed psychologist, was absolute clueless about ASD. I have found that a lot, it takes a really good specialist to recognise autism in women. In the end I found a specialist mental health center, and was diagnosed at age 47. This was four years ago. My life is soooo much better now. I'm at last living a life that actually suits me! It can make such a difference knowing you have ADHD and/or autism.

I was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD about 15 years ago - the process wasn't as well-organised then as it it is now, but I did have access to a lot of help. (It was just more fragmentary back then.) I had the medication for years, and then stopped at some point because I no longer needed it. I was fine for years, but recently realised that things had changed and I was no longer coping so well. I'm now back on meds, and it's made a huge difference. I'm glad the meds help you, and I think it's great that you have the courage to talk about this. I hope your video helps other people, too. ADHD is nothing to be ashamed of.

Autism has helped me get the best job I probally could wish for. With my own room that's inclosed and quiet, guidance from a college that truly does care for me, a jobcoach that helps me also for home stuff because she realizes that's causing issues at work, a security with money and job stay, everyone understanding how I behave/react, being able to go out to photograph things I like at any time, everything is seriously organised to. And I don't need to have contact with clients or other people if I do not want to. So yeah. Autism is a issue/problem, but it's also helping me so much more then before I got the diagnosis. As now I don't need to be at home 24/7 or have a job I would never be able to perform/enjoy. I just have everything in place for me. Sounds a bit egotistical I know. But this helps me to do work that nobody else wants to do. Quickly and correctly. And actually enjoy it and be happy with it. Like normal people would get crazy, just inserting about 500 invoices in a system. I LOVE IT. And yeah it's even better when you actually are missed on your workplace (because I went on vacation for 2 weeks) because you do that job so well. Some tasks are actually only mine, like nobody else dares to do it, because I basically owning it. It gives me a lot of confidence which I was lacking before. Also, because only work 28 hours, I can sleep out, which for me is the way to not get to tired each day from all the stimulans everywhere. And so I can perform.
I do hope others will get a job like this to. Because it really makes it better for everyone.

I’ve recently been thinking I have ADHD and our son does, too. So I really appreciate you doing this video! I wonder if the process is similar here in Germany. And wow, to see your results before and after taking the medications was shocking! The before side is how I feel a lot. I was just flying to the US last week and I was incredibly antsy and not okay on the plane becuase it’s so long. So now that my eyes are opened to the fact that I may have ADHD I’m seeing the thread all throughout my life and in everyday life. But it’s freeing! I’m feeling better knowing I can probably get some help.

Jovie, well done on opening up on such a sensitive topic, it will help a lot of people in similar situations. Anyone trolling you here is extremely simple minded and heartless. I'm struggling with the relationship with my kids and my patience towards them as well and recognize a lot of what you are saying, and I feel the same way: it's not ok. I'm going to take action to change that now, thank you for being an inspiration to this would-be better parent ❣

I am so happy for this video. As I have always been "not quite" diagnosed with certain mental health issues because it just by a smidget falls "outside of the box" I've had to find my own ways to navigate many of these struggles, and even though there is a lot more help to be found these days without an official diagnosis, these types of videos are extremely helpful for those that may not always get the access to professional help. Even if its just being reminded of taking a step back, looking at your situation, taking a breath and go "oh yes, I can totally find a way to deal with this". In this case you pointed out a couple things I've neglected to work on lately and that's motivated me to schedule some time aside to actually do some self-care. Thank you!

This is timely for me! I'm getting my assessment in November (also a six month wait in my part of the country) and I was curious about what happens after the diagnosis. I was nervous about being stuck with a medication that isn't right for me, knowing that my huisarts can't change it, but the process seems really thorough!
Thank you for making this video and good luck with the rest of your ADHD journey!

And what can the right diagnose, therapy and meds make you feel better, right...? If only you would have known way back in time.... But at least you know right now. There is no shame in the right treatment of anything people suffer about, really! The only thing you could say: "It is such a shame" , is when you do not go seek treatment for something you suffer of, right..?

Hi Jovie! Thank you so much for sharing your story. I started following your channel about 2 years ago during the pandemic, because I had lived in the Netherlands as well and I wanted to hear about others' experiences. I liked your vibe and although I couldn't relate to everything, the main theme of your channel was still interesting to me.
And today I saw this video. I got diagnosed with ADHD 3 months ago. It's so nice to see you share your experience with getting diagnosed! And it makes me wonder if this is the reason I started following you in the first place! That we are drawn to people who are somehow similar to us, who we can relate to, and maybe this is why I was able to relate to you even before either of us got diagnosed. :) (I am noticing this with other people in my life as well.)
Thanks again and good luck with your TH-cam, ADHD, family and Netherlands journey! ;)

Hey Jovie, I got diagnosed for ADHD being in my early 30s. The process was completely different, much faster but nonetheless this process probably would've been extremely reassuring and accurate. There is a lot of doubt when being diagnosed, so I still do feel the same about it so being tested intensively seems like a way to validate the diagnosis especially with medication. As you know in America medication is a stigma so yeah I still hesitate so, definitely love the system of analyzing the effects here. Amazing. I'm immensely grateful and happy for you. Another reason to appreciate the Netherlands 💗

Like you I got my diagnosis (not adhd, but in the autism spectrum, which has some overlap with adhd ) in adult life but from a psychological point of view it hit like a bomb and wrecked me. All those obvious signs that were noticed but never acted on, made me feel betrayed by my family. All those events screwing up my life! You have a fighting chance to live a "normal life" and you deserve it. Go for it!

Understanding and recognising is one of the biggest changes a diagnosis can make live better. I've noticed it with my autism and my depression and it changed so much.

Lots of people don't understand and maybe this way will make them see it's apretty normal "thing" while ther are so many people who are suffering from adhd and do not know about it or don't wanna have that label. I am so happy for you that you recognised you needed help, and you followed up on it. It takes courage. I can only imagine the comments you have had about medications. Unfortunately, a lot of people who should probably be assessed themselves for their own mental health issues, don't get that medication is a necessary tool to maintaining good health. I am someone who doesn't drink alcohol at all, have never been into taking or experimenting with illegal drugs, so imagine my shock when I was called a drug addict by someone close to me because I am on medications for diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis! Apparently because I need those meds to stay alive and walking, I am a drug addict in their eyes. Go figure. I hope you continue to improve and find the right path for you to achieve a balance in your life that works for you.

Interesting perspective, and I want to say in general I liked watching your videos and your storytelling in them! (watched a few of them today when one popped up on my youtube home page)
I'm Dutch and just turned 40 last week, but for a large part of my life (and also looking back to me as a kid) suspecting I might have adhd or something in "the spectrum". Finally taking steps now to find professional help there and this video helped to get a better idea of what that could look like :)

I'm Dutch and was diagnosed last May by ADHD Centraal. Currently following a similar treatment plan and it is interesting to see an other perspective on the same thing. Unfortunatelly for me methylfenidaat was not it so currently in the process of figuring out what medication would work, which is frustrating but I am glad it workout for you :) Keep up the good work and succes with exploring your ADHD

I've been living in the Netherlands for a year. I found out from my mother recently that I was diagnosed as ADHD inattentive at the age of 6. I was never treated. It was ignored. Now I need to get rediagnosed in the Netherlands. I am SO intimidated by health care professionals. Nevermind blunt, callous Dutch doctors. I have been treated for anxiety and depression for decades and the meds dont help anymore. I have a very similar story to yours. My patience is at zero and I am not okay. Thank you so much for sharing.

Wow Jovie, this takes me back 18 jears, different life, same problems and the same diagnosis, adhd. that was the time I got my answer to what people always telling me, and i didn't know what they meant, with having a quiet mind, and having no thoughts. That didn't exist, never experienced it. I always had thoughts. It never stopped. Until, medication. Good for you Jovi, and my complements to you're Huisarts, in my case I had to ask my Huisarts, couldn't it be adhd. Sorry I'm rambling. I think this is not the medium to go deeper. Could talk about it for hours. The conversation of recognition. If you have questions or just want to talk about adhd. Let me know.

This is pretty cool. I'm 40 and I had my diagnosis around the start of Corona, also at ADHD Centraal. Due to Corona it was all remote, but still quite similar.
My mom also gave me all my report cards. :)
I had to do the computer test at home, the first time I did it, I got so frustrated by it, that I almost threw my computer out the window, the second time, it was boring, but oh so easy. It was amazing.
Case worker isn't exactly who that person was I suspect. They are a nurse specialized in ADHD, at least it was in my case.
Methylphenidate is what the most common ADHD medication is called. Ritalin is methylphenidate, it's just the brand name.
Taking the medication for the first time, was like being color blind all my life and all of a sudden seeing color for the first time, it was so great, especially the completely different way I could interact with my son and the way I saw him, now I have two kids and I don't think I could have managed without the medication, half of what I can now with them.
I take two long working tablets, one when I wake up and one around 14:30, so I always have the medication. I also drink alcohol, it doesn't seem to have any effect and they never warned me against drinking, only that it can cause issues for some.
Experimenting with the medication was hard for me though, I had to try a double dose, but that was a horrible day. I felt like I was going a million miles an hour, but then the next day, when I was back to normal, with my normal dose, I looked back and realized I didn't accomplish a thing and wasted so much time. Made me question how effective hyper focus really is, as it's one of the few ADHD symptoms that people seem to praise, but for me it was much less effective.
The therapy is definitely the best part. It helped so much with the relationship with my wife and kids.
I also have basic health insurance and I didn't have to pay anything, my insurance paid for it all. The medication isn't paid for though, Methylphenidate is covered, but only the fast working ones and I didn't want to have to take it four times a day or even more, the long term ones aren't fully covered, so that costs me a few hundred euro a year, but is well worth it.
Regarding negative stuff, don't mention it on job interviews, it will be used against you, I also also trying to get my driver's license and had to pay an obscene amount for a 15 minute conversation with a psychologist to be assessed, to see if I could get a permanent license or if i should get a temporary one first, it was a huge pain.
Ultimately though, the only thing I'm sad about, is that I didn't have the diagnosis a long, long time ago, but I'm so glad I had it done.
Have a look at How to ADHD channel btw, it's really good.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I really appreciate it. My nephew has suspected ADHD but my sister refuses to get him examined because she’s worried about “the label” that he would get… so in the meantime he’s suffering and she’s not doing anything about it, which insecurely hard for my parents and myself to observe. Personally I think my sister also suffers from ADHD and she looses her temper a lot with her kids but also with our parents. Would you consider putting Dutch subtitles to this video so people who don’t speak English very well could also understand it? I would love to show it to my mom but her English is not good enough to follow it like this. Best of luck to you!

Hi Jovie, thank you so much for sharing -very courageous of you! I recently found out I also have ADHD . From a young age I knew/felt I was different. First I thought: maybe I'm a bit stupid. But that could not be it, because I was excellent at chess and learning came very easy for me, as many other things too. Socializing was a.o. the difficult thing for me. As years went by I learnt myself to cope with it, and learnt myself how to react in a better way (with ups and many downs). I taught myself to bring in practice the 3 R's: in Dutch "RUST, REINHEID, REGELMAAT', in English: Rest/tranquility, Cleanliness, Regularity/order. I taught myself mnemonics, to keep my thoughts in order, and I tell people: téll me when you think I talk too much or annoy you. Before the 80th the diagnosis of ADHD was non existent (ADHD wás however). I met several people over 50 (I'm 67) who used to were labelled as: difficult, brisk, busy, noisy, (over-)quiet, (over-)active a.s.o. Thank God for a good (the right) label. Yes people can judge you for the label, but before, they did also! Now they can judge you/me in the right way (if they choose to). Now: WE KNOW, we can explain, we can TALK (what everyone should do) and listen (not just hear). Everybody has a label, some are just not written (yet). I learned to be a counselor, but worked at a primary school; now I am a pensioner and sometimes help people. I wish I had known earlier that I had ADHD, it would have been easier, but maybe i've learned more not knowing! Jovie: love your site, keep it up.

Jovie!!! My daugter is same age! Turning 5 in October 2023. We are Afrikaans, but our English is excellent. Maybe after we've emigrated we can meet up for playdates. My girl also loves jewellery! She actually has decided on a jewellery theme for her birthday. This will be her last birthday in South Africa, so we will make it big. We have a big house in one of the best neighbourhoods and on our property there is a party venue, a beautiful outdoor building with a huge spa bath and we use it for parties then we hire entertainment and a jumping castle which goes into our huge backyard! So thoroughly aware we wom't have that in the Netherlands. But also... I won't be afraid of opening my gate when I see an unknown vehicle in my street in case somebody hijacks my car!!! It is massively unsafe here, we are also running out of water and electricity as nothing and no infrastructures are being maintained here while the goverment is extremely corrupt... anyways... Im not going to complain. But back to the point. Would love to meet you!!! Perhaps one day ❤

I've been thinking about this for years at this point, not specifically ADHD, but something. And in large part thanks to your video I went and asked my GP for help. :) My distraction collumn is very much yes, the hyperactivity part not so much, but the person I'm seeing says that might be the masking bit that is very common in girls and women. Seeing the GGZ now for prescreening and access to tools etc, but yeah, I'm now on the waiting list to go to an ADHD centre. :) So, thanks! :)

I love how long this video is!
I am one of the happy girls who did get a diagnosis at age 8!, however, in 2009 I wasn’t helped amazing, it was (in my memory) a very short progress after diagnosis… in my teenage years I didn’t have any problems that I related to my ADHD because I was thought that it can go away later in life…. in 2020 I did an new assessment from ADHD centraal but from home, I have never seen the building… i find it so beautiful to hear you talk about this. I hope you are still learning a lot about your own brain and that you just know, YOU are YOU, you aren’t your ADHD.❤️
    Nog 1 vraag;
Deed je het hele proses in het Nederlands??
………. Ik neem mijn pilletjes al heel lang niet meer😅😅 very (ADHD) bad of me😬😬.
… this video makes me kinda sad that i didn’t take all the things I had that serious and I kinda want to just get a talk with the CGT therapist that I had… I had the 12 weeks.. but since I broke my medication cycle like half a year ago, I just now feel kinda bad.. If I could do one thing again it would be my CGT, it was kinda hard but I loved to have that assurance.

Hi Jovie! Thank you very much for sharing, this is such an essential information for me. I have been following your channel for a while because I am thinking about moving to the Netherlands. I am in my early 30-s and am suspecting I might have ADHD. I was not diagnosed at my home country, and then had to leave because of war, and symptoms worsened due to the recent stress.
I had a lot of anxiety about moving to the Netherlands concerning if I would be able to get help in case I needed it, and this video makes it so much easier for me! Thank you very much for your effort!
I also have a connection between lack of sun exposure (vitamin D deficiency, and consequent Dopamine deficiency) and attention deficit, and was wondering that this might be the case in the Netherlands. I would appreciate if you could share if there is any research on that topic.
    Have a wonderful day! xx
