Don't forget that the Enterprise-E lost it's shielding when it went through the temporal vortex. The same may have occurred to the Borg Sphere. And as we can see in Q-Who, Federation weaponry is EXTREMELY effective against unshielded Borg vessels. The only issue was that the Borg quickly adapted, and the Enterprise-D didn't keep up the momentum.
Quick caveat, the Borg almost always sacrifice the first vessel to come in contact with a new species so that they can learn about the extent of that species weapons

The USS Shelby looks like an improved Defiant class without the teething troubles of the Defiant class. You can clearly see that the starship designers of Starfleet have really learned from the weaknesses of the Defiant class.
The sphere in First Contact was likely already damaged, but it was also unshielded. If you look closely at the scene of its destruction, when the 4 quantum torpedoes hit there are no shields. The Enterprise E shields are also down at that point - due to having travelled through the temporal vortex. So, either due to damage, or due to the temporal vortex, the Borg sphere was unshielded.
I like seeing matches where ships with the same name go head to head, I'm not sure if its on here but it would be interesting to see a fleet of the star wars scimitar vs the star trek scimitar.
Interesting ship for sure. I too believe if Shelby had designed her own ship it would look similar to this. I agree that the winner here is the Shelby.
I always assumed that the Borg Sphere in First Contact had been heavily modified by the Borg for it to have Time Travel abilities. That would have taken away power from it's shields and weapons. I also assumed that the Borg wouldn't think that they would lose the battle to begin with, so the Sphere didn't have a full crew aboard. I guess they attacked Earth with just one Cube, which was carrying the modified Time Travel Sphere, in order to get the Sphere close enough to the Earth to go back and screw with history, though why they would to do it from orbit is beyond me. You may be right about the Sphere having been damaged when the Cube exploded, as I never understood why they tried to assimilate the E anyway. They could have just beamed down as many drones as they had to the Earth and start assimilating the population there - within hours, they would have control over 1,000's if not millions of people. Within a day, they would have the planet. What could Picard do then? He couldn't exactly glass the planet from orbit with Quantum torpedoes, as that would have ended the human race then and there. Capturing the Enterprise E was a waste of effort on the Borg's part. By the time "First Contact" was made by the Vulcans, they would have found the Borg waiting for them. Which would give the Borg warp tech for immediate use - then they would have taken Vulcan in a few years and the rest of the Quadrant, long before they could signal the Borg back home.
You make some very good points here! Some I've never considered. I like your idea that the Sphere was specifically designed/modified for time travel. That would almost certainly mean combat effectiveness wouldn't be a top priority. Your correct about the Enterprise E as well, they could have just beamed down and started assimilating. Luckily that didn't happen 😂
It was so heavily modified, that the e was able to do exactly the same thing to return to the future. I think based on that, it should be pretty easy to time travel.
@@daveaglasgow the Federation had plenty of experience with time travel. We have no idea if the Borg did. Without the presence of the Borg Queen on board, would the few Borg sent back to 2063 have been able to form a stable collective? We saw what happened to the Borg on Lore's ship. The sphere may have been modified to carry version of the Queen. Which could limit its other abilities
The Quantum Torpedoes are borg busters by the way they work on impact. The Enterprise E is an extremely powerful vessel, not surprising it made light work of the borg sphere in Star Trek first contact.
The best weapon would be to include the phase cloak that was developed and integrate them into some torpedoes. You fire and have them decloak inside the sphere and voila - no more sphere. For a cube, fire 2 of them, have their detonation synchronized and voila.
