He’s such an excellent man, and the history of his life is almost more impressive than any of the characters he wrote. He was a true literary and national hero for his country.
something about how passionate he is about this topic just makes it fun to watch for me! he always seems like hes having a good time talking about these kinds of rare editions, and the way he scripts the videos is also quite entertaining
@@Diogenes_Lantern. Why? You can argue about whether Fleming is worth reading, but even as a fan, why would you need an edition worth two years of rent? Not saying it's not interesting or that he isn't a joy to listen to, but why should they care?
I discovered Tom's channel several months ago and now look forward to every new video or short. I never knew just how much I needed information like this.
Ah man. I was a huge Bond book fan in middle school and high school. I saw a first edition of Man with the Golden Gun in Powell's for $60 (back in 2000 or 2001) and that was how i learned what a first edition was (wondering why it was so expensive). I wish i had the money to have bought it back then.
I've got a few of the James Bond first editions but assumed they were more or less worthless because they aren't mint. I'll have to look more closely at this - thanks!
You've clearly never collected anything before, you don't spend $7000 dollars on something, just to replace parts of it to make it less whole. Also this man is a historian, giving him even further reason to preserve books as they were, not modify them for aesthetics.
That was not what i was expecting Its such a small detail but wow, what a piece I was half expecting you to say the 7000 one was part of his personal library Id actually not realized he was dead. I have much to thank the man for, james bond is by far the worlds best spy series that both me and my grandfather enjoy immensly Rest in peace
The jackets are the same and most dealers would just swap the jackets. Not sure why Tom hasn't. Some would prefer to keep the books as original as possible, but there's no proof either jackets are original to the books after 60 years, so there's no issue in doing so in my opinion.
I know a bookstore with the golden gun one and it’s priced around $800 CAD, right now. Pristine cover as far as I remember. Might go look again, seeing this. I have one of Dryden’s original subscriber 1697 Works of Virgil, and I own a non-limited man with the golden gun but not this edition, this might be a good new item to grab. Edit to add: the ending of the book is very fun IMHO. You’d think a bullet would be lethal, but just in case it’s not, Scaramanga puts in that little extra bit of effort.
So does the Jacket from the gun copy have any marks or printing that is it from a gun copy and not a standard copy? If not why not put the better jacket on the pricier book to increase it's value and/or condition?
Would be so easy to rebind that book. I have a couple of first editions that were also published as book club editions and even the binding is identical. It's just the dust jacket that's different. And the price difference is about the same. Have always wanted to do a custom binding (cause I know I'm only tearing up a book club edition) with the cover of the first edition inlaid in dyed leather and foil leaf. Not mentioning what books they are cause the scam is alive and well in my back pocket
“Can you tell the difference?” But the difference isn’t something that is possible to determine without opening the book which the books were not open to display covers besides the cover art being displayed on the outside jacket cover which were different but not explained as exclusive to either version
I took my Grandfather's copy of "The Man With the Golden Gun" to auction in 2007. Just as I got to the door, a dog jumped up and snatched it out of my hand before I entered the auction house. I was absolutely distraught. 2 years later, I was reading the newspaper in my conservatory and saw a story that made my jaw drop. "Dog sells rare Fleming novel for £7,000". I couldn't believe it. I looked at the picture of the dog holding the cheque for £7k and it was him alright. I'd recognise him anywhere. I told the police and they did absolutely nothing about it.
I'm amazed when people overspend for the same item. The words and story is what is valuable in a book- the physical object is just a necessary object to access those words. It's ultimately just tat.
I had no idea Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was written by Ian Fleming.
It was! And Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay!
Yes and there's a recipe for fudge in the back.

The name Truly Scrumptious was a hint.
The $99999999 copy actually came with a golden gun

I was looking for this lol.
If you got this copy you can go to the Smith & Wesson factory where absolutely nothing crazy happens
Except you get nothing for it.
@@rellikx7519they'd be insulted saying the golden gun is a colt lol
“A PICTURE OF a golden gun” because can you imagine if it came with an actual golden gun!?

It is amazing how little I care about seven thousand pound specific copies of books and yet I keep clicking on your videos every time they pop up.
Lmao same I genuinely don’t know why I clicked. I’m not interested and I’ll do nothing with this info but something about it is mesmerizing.
something about how passionate he is about this topic just makes it fun to watch for me! he always seems like hes having a good time talking about these kinds of rare editions, and the way he scripts the videos is also quite entertaining

I agree with Cathe L. The light you shine on books, cover, design and illustration is great, thank you

Thank you for shining a light on the world of old books and the amazing art of book design!

Are you in the oil industry?
Ah yes, a printed golden gun is worth twice my salary
Wow. I love your posts. They always brighten my day 😊
bro could have told us that in a quarter of the time he made me wait, I gotta stop my doom scrolling
how was i supposed to see the golden gun tho
The cover art for this is beautiful.
this was a good short. You addressed all of my guesses and didn’t waste time. Kudos!
Hate people who think that buying a book for more than 20$ is a good idea
“And 3 books were published with an actual golden gun” 😂
“And only one came with the golden gun loaded with 9mm golden bullets”

cool I would take these books out at the library 30 years ago to read. I wonder how many first additions are still at the library?
For a second I thought the title was 300 pound book vs 700 pound gun 💀
Tom your channel is so fascinating. I love books 📚 ive got hundreds but none worth that much. Its whas written thats important😊

Welp. Time to watching some best of Antique Roadshow compilations.
"It was issued with a Golden Gun. THIS Golden Gun!" *Bang Bang Bang!*
I was not expecting the golden gun at all. Awesome
Now, we need the golden pan! 😂 It will surely be worth alot of money.
*get it, TF2*
Can you guess which is worth more… based on this feature that you would have no idea of knowing which book had until I opened the cover 🙄
So if you take the pristine cover from the $300 and give it too the $7000 version would that improve its value?
Let me call Rebeca from Pawn Stars.
I love that even her name stands for ”terrible / horrible” in Finish
Swap the paper and the 7000 will have the good looking paper too
Oddly satisfying voice, check. Educational content, check. doesn’t show off wealth, check. You’ve just got a new sub
How would you verify authenticity ?
Not giving a fuck pays off, in this case £7000
You gave me an idea
Basically make a story with 2 or more parts to it and then make matching covers for the books so it makes a whole picture
People put value on the weirdest things.
Maybe you should swap the covers.

So what would happen if the banged up sleeve where to be switched with the pristine sleeve would the book go up or down in value ?
Can you not swap the dust jackets over? Or are they different?
Good point, I wonder if the pristine one would then be worth more if there wasn't a tell
The jackets are the same and most dealers would just swap the jackets. Not sure why Tom hasn't. Some would prefer to keep the books as original as possible, but there's no proof either jackets are original to the books after 60 years, so there's no issue in doing so in my opinion.

It's amazing how people will assign an unjustified value to something simply because it's different.
I mean in this case one version there is way less. So, the value is "justified" because it is more rare.
Were you not watching?
Would putting the prestine jacket on the one with the gun elevate the value if noone finds out the switch? Or is that irrelevant?
My dad had all of them. His wife removed all the covers. She thought they looked better without them. :/
Do they still have value ?
If the covers are the same would you not just swap them over to have the better condition one on the one worth more...?
Interesting! Around how much would the #d 940 be if there was no dust jacket mate?
The cover rocks tho!
£1 = 1.13 $
£300 = 393 usd
£7000 = 9170 usd
I thought that one of the books was
"The man with" and the other one was
"He golden gun"
So does the Jacket from the gun copy have any marks or printing that is it from a gun copy and not a standard copy? If not why not put the better jacket on the pricier book to increase it's value and/or condition?
"he'd never ask that question if the one in better condition is worth more. It's the beat up copy."
I like how it has a worn spine, presumably from it being taken off to show the book marking

😊 Bravo! Thanks for this.
You must be strong if you can hold them up like that
In the film adaptation: Scaramanga's gun was changed from a colt to a custom made Golden Gun
Could you swap the dust jackets?
"But that's impossible because ..." and my brain goes "because he couldn't write".
culd you put the cover of the pristine on on the one with the golden gun or does the cover have a way of identifying that it belongs to that book
Oh yes, oh yes, they both, oh yes, they both, oh yes, they both reached for…the gun, the gun, the gun, the gun, for the gun
Bro just found out what rarity means.
Anyone else think of destiny when hearing “the man with the golden gun”
Is the gun cold plated or just gold paper? I can’t really tell from the vid

Theres also a first printing of the man with the golden gun with white end papers ..
What's the relevence of the golden gun on the cover?
"But that cowardly killer, that shot Mr. Miller, had layed old Otis in his grave, yeah!"

I absolutely thought he said one of the books was 5000 pounds and I was like "how the hell is he holding that up??"
Cant you pit the intact cover on the most expensive one to make it a bit less worn
Could you add more value to the £7000 one than the £300 one loses by switching the dust jackets?
The 10,000 dollar one had an actual gun in it
I got it because the older it looks the more it will cost, surprised I was right.
Are they really that heavy?
He’s talking about it’s value not its weight
How much if you put the better cover on the golden gun one
I'm not paying that much for a golden imprint. You can get it added if you want. 😅
