This video is correct. Another common wrong way is to put books lying down, or pick up the books by the spine, wich tears apart their back cover. Both problems could be avoided by following the tips of this video. Much appreciation from Brazil!
I lie big books like the ones shown flat because otherwise the block of pages has its weight unsupported at the side opposite the binder. This damages and warps the pages and teh binder and is also probably the reason for the discussed splaying
It's not a problem as long as you don't compress the books tightly against each other. I've noticed Patrick leaves a little gap between all his books. I always fit one less book on each shelf than can fit, and then I space the books out evenly along the shelf. This prevents splay.
i mean... if you dont press them in there like sardines, it should be fine. jsut make sure you have enough space, and you can still have them even in the front.
Right lol. I have 1 leatherbound collectible. You solve all the problems by storing it horizontally instead of standing up. My sis has more (old unabridged classics), and they sit in stacks of 4 or 5, instead of trying to shelf them vertically with the rest.
You shouldn’t shelve large thick books standing upright (unless you have inserts), as the mass of the pages will cause the pages to sag and pull at the binding at the top
Do you have a video on how to prevent the pages from sagging when the book is on the shelf? I have some that are flat spines and heavy so i just slipped some cardboard under the pages to prevent it from sagging too much on the shelf.
Better still, just stagger the fronts of the books. After all, some books are the exact same size, and lining up the backs will cause the same problem.
Just don't make it too tall, and they'll be fine (you risk making it too heavy for the bottom books, resulting in the same damage you get from tight shelving).
This is kind of like a video telling people that they are wiping their ass wrong, you shouldnt use your hand and lick it clean, just use toilet paper instead. No one is doing it the wrong way in the first place, the "fix" is just what literally everyone was already doing right from the start.
My “pile on the floor” system works perfectly for my needs, thank you very much.
I have a dresser that serves the same purpose. 😂
I was gifted a bookcase a couple years ago, I haven’t built it, still have my beautiful piles on the floor that my husband despises
Finally, an argument with my wife that I have won.
In other words, just push all your books to the rear of your shelf.
That's not right. You can choose how you want to display your books but consider leaving a gap in the back for air flow.
Well said!
@@Undergroundexpedition isnt oxidation a thing to worry about?

The good news is that I don’t own books because I never learned how to read.
Did you have someone type this out for you?
Intelligence on two levels here.
😂😂😂

Can’t read but can write?
In a minor beneficial addition to this, the uneven depths will help the acoustics of the room by providing more diffraction.
Wow, I never would have considered this.
Jokes on you, I like echoes. Makes the room feel more spacious.
I've never been so satisfied at having a total stranger tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thank You! And my books thank you as well, sir - !
Thank you for the informative video. I now need to reconsider my shelving habits.
The way you said to put your books on the shelf is the way I have been doing it all the time.
That's why you're so smart.
Makes sense but what is the situation behind him? 🇦🇺👍🍺

Someone else's library. Inappropriate to rearrange their property.
Looks like they are pushed up against the back, the way he says they should be.
Oh good, my chaotic gremlin brain has been doing it right.

Have minor, superficial damage to my books < Have shelves that aren't a complete mess
Unless you literally have a bunch of rare books why would you worry about it?

Good point. Guess what happens when you group books by similar size…
Thanks ~ Awareness level increased.
Don’t shelves your books too tightly.
I prefer to line mine up. I've never had a problem with splay and I've got a ton of EP books.
Okay, that makes sense! Thanks for the advice!
You would like the book “The Library: A Fragile History”. It talks about the beginning of book collecting shortly after the age of print
I've always done it like this, so never had this problem
Do you have a video on how to prevent the pages from sagging when the book is on the shelf?

Store those horizontally. It can look nice on the shelf if you stack a few and treat them like shelf dividers.
So if you push the books all the way to the back of the shelf, you are storing them correctly? Because the ends will be all in a single line.
It's good to know I was doing the right thing already.
Looks like the Nonesuch Press shakespeare by your left elbow but only 3/7 volumes?
Huh I was actually already doing that. More so out of laziness I suppose
Is this only a problem with hardcovers? Are paperbacks exempt from this problem?
Makes sense. Thank you.
I've been sooo trying to come up with some stupid Kindle joke... : )
Ive been doing it right this whole time 😂 I just organize them by size
Better still, just stagger the fronts of the books. After all, some books are the exact same size, and lining up the backs will cause the same problem.
Is it beneficial to stack them at all?
That’s damaging for those under a lot of weight. Standing them up is the best storage method, and also provides the easiest access.
Just don't make it too tall, and they'll be fine (you risk making it too heavy for the bottom books, resulting in the same damage you get from tight shelving).
Drat. Still, most of my books are paperbacks.
Tf.... I've literally never seen that happen in my life.
Interesting.
he looks like white P. Diddy
You normalize audio on your videos wrong. Avoid this common mistake.
Then I shelve my books correctly.
Ok, that makes sense. But I still shelve my books to look neat. .. uneven books would drive me nuts. Thanks anyway.
Thanks!
IMHO
Who knew??😮
No

I know right... trying to line them up in the front results in their always sliding back anyway.
You do realize all the books behind you are lined up right? 😅
...they're very clearly not.
well, looks like I'll never find out what you think is wrong as I can't hear you.
One more thing to think about that I don’t give a shit about.
Yet the books in the background are "shelved wrong" according to you...... I'm done here
Aligning at the spine doesnt mean its shelved wrong if the length of the books are all the same
Look again and pay attention this time. The books behind him are shelved as he recommends.
Did you look behind you ? ....all wrongfully shelved in your attitude
Thans for man splaining to me
