I wish they could've show his past back on the time he's still serving in the SAS like in the comics. The difference on the comics however is he is serving in the Royal Marine Corps during the Falklands War.
Because the comic's story is set in the early 2000's and he was barely 18 when he enlisted. They needed to advance the timeframe in the show to make it more relevant. Same as with Preacher, that in the comics, took place in the late 1990s. Also, obviously the comic is a satire of comic book superheroes while the show is a satire of cinematic/tv superheroes.
considering we did see Mallory's backstory retold in a different timeframe in a surprisingly faithful i'm optimistic that they're going to do something similar to Butcher's somewhere down the line!
