Derek Joon 289 is the predecessor to the 302 and it competed with engines like the 327 from Chevy and pulled through with less power torque and displacement and proved to be just as reliable. Why would you pick a smogged 150hp 302 for a best engines list over the 275hp k code 289 that started the racing of the small block Ford v8s?
Mad Mod Just because it was down on power and smog pumped doesn't make it a bad engine, millions were made and they ran great for a long friggin time. Fuck always gotta be a know it all douche bag troll.

Exclusively North American. I would say that the venerable Crossflow (1100 -1800cc) is one of the greatest engines EVER full stop. The YB Cosworth tuned motor is also amazingly good (based on another great engine, the Pinto). The Cologne V6 is another stalwart of the European blue oval engine bays and almost bullet proof.
No mention of the Ford Europe engines? The Kent OHV i4? The Essex V4 and V6? The Cologne V4 and V6? And how about the SOHC "Pinto" engine, much beloved of tuners and kit car owners?
I hope you do a Part 2. Ford has so many great engines. It must have been difficult to narrow it down to just nine for this video. Continue the excellent work.
I'm a big Ford guy, great cars and trucks, but it kills me to admit this but enemy with the Bow Tie guys did better with the small block then even better with the LS series engines. I think because they stuck with a design and kept improving it (small block over 50 years) they perfected it and because there was so many the after market greatly supported it and the LS is even better, Ford kept changing year after year. Go to any drag strip and most all the sportsman class V-8s are Chevy, and in prostock its taken over. Take a lesson Ford, then we will be on top!
8:08 That actually sounds like a 6.0 Powerstroke. The 7.3 has a more classic low pitch exhaust rumble whereas the 6.0 has a more pronounced high pitch buzz with a slight undertone. Both sound good but the 7.3 is hands down more reliable out of the box, 6.0 can be reliable after you put about $7K +/- into it.
The "Kent" engine was the OHV engine first seen in the Mk1 Cortina/Ford Anglia 105E, then modified to the "Crossflow" head for the Mk2 Cortina and Mk1 Ford Escort. They still get used in kit cars, some stroked out to 1750, with twin DCOE Webber carbs and silly power for such a basic engine! People forget Ford Europe made some nice i4 and V6 engines, except in Europe :)
Nah, the 7.3's of the 90's and early 2000's are really solid engines....it's the bullshit EGR systems (the really new ones they started putting in after 06 or 07) but to be fair, it affects the Duramax and the Cummins as well, when those EGR systems malfunctions on these newer diesels they have a tendancy to royally fuck up the engines that they are installed in...
Ford did not build any Powerstrokes until the Scorpion 6.7 ( 2011-present ). The 7.3 to 6.4 PSDs are all Navistar products with the 7.3 being the best one. I drive a 2018 F350 with the 6.7 and nothing slows it down
Hey good vid. Could easily be Ford’s best 20 engines. As others have pointed out lots of good engines didn’t make the list. I got 2 more. The 03-04 supercharged mustang cobra and its brethren the 4.6 4cam all aluminum engine. Friggin work of art
You forgot one of the best engines, the Ford GAA. Double over head cam , dual carbs, 500 hp at 2600 rpms and over 1000 footpounds of torque at just off idle. And one of the largest V8's at 1100 cubic inches. This was in the 1940's.
What no 4.6L V8 in the Mustangs its one of most reliable engines Ford has you can drive them hard with no problem and have a good sound and torque to them I have a 05 GT.
How is the ecoshit motor even on this list? Reliable? pffft....They are notorious for running hot (you know because they do have a high output for their small size, which means they produce alot of heat for their size too) and ford just recently upgraded the cooling solution to mitigate some of the issues....I will take a bigger engine with similar output thanks.....they are (in general) far more reliable......
The very latest versions are better as they somewhat fixed the coolant pipe issue. But there are still loads of cooked Focus and Fiesta engines out there.
Anh Hùng more like realist. An american V8 might be outdated when it comes to technology, but is by far superior in reliability than anything branded ecoboost. Not like Ive had an ecoboost, but if an N/A 4 banger gave me shitloads of problems, I would never go buy a turboed version, which by the way, gets lots of stress and ends up being shit before even hitting 100,000 miles, Id rather have nuts (torque) and reliability, I can supercharge most V8's to low lbs and still be reliable while having 400+ HP. Cant get that with any ecoboost.
the 4.6L OHC came before the 5.4... the 4.6 uses lots of the same parts as the 5.4... the 4.6 revs 2500rpm higher... its softer torque curve makes it better for a car. the torque impulses of the LS engines cause the vehicle to have small losses of traction on each cylinder fire. can see that by observing slow motion replays of burn outs just worming up the tires... they have to put tires on them that have a vary elastic side wall, or they will loose time.
they missed what ford even says is by far the best motor they have ever built the 6.2l out of the raptor and superduty. Ford has even said its probably a better motor than the 7.3 diesel
My Top 5 Ranking of the best engines from Ford: 1. Cosworth V8 from Benetton F1in the late 80's 2. 5.2L Voodoo V8 in the Shelby GT350 3. 5.0L Coyote V8 4. 2.5L Five Cylinder from the 2nd gen Focus 5. 5.4L Ford Modular Supercharged V8 from the 2005 Ford GT
Your right, the most sucessful Formula 1 engine should have been on the list but i think it wasn't, due to the fact that it's primary use was racing and it being a cosworth engine.
Philip Fox 2.0 I can agree with your list, only thing is the inline 5 from the 2nd gen Focus ST/RS wasn't really a Ford engine. At the time Ford owned Volvo and the I5 was taken straight from Volvo. Still some great and really reliable engines if well maintained.
There are a few he missed for sure. 351C, 427 "cammer", 1.6 Kent, 2.3 Lima, and the 390. 351C favorite of drag and stock car racers. 1.6 Kent engine was a Formula Ford engine at one time. The Lima engine back in the day was a favorite of mini stock car racers. The 390 probably the most underrated of the bunch
I came across a 7.3 Powerstroke the other day with 450,000 miles on it. The guy was in for an oil change, i couldn't believe it was that healthy for almost a half million miles.
Awesome that you included the 289 and the 428 cobra jets as they are two of my favorite ford engines and I like the 7.3 power stroke diesel. We use to have a 96 F-250 power stroke and it literally would go anywhere and my grandparents who had it before we got it used it to haul a boat and other times a 30 foot RV. I'm a big Ford fan myself
My 4.9 f150 has 445,000 miles on it and I still daily it everywhere and still running strong just took a trip from Richmond VA to Outer Banks North Carolina and still getting 17 to 20 highway miles

5.0/302
4.0 I6 (Barra)
351 Windsor/ Cleveland
I'm sure theirs more but those are the main ones that came to mind
4.9 300 inline 6 if you blow it up hats off. I've dumped diesel in mine and to free up stuck cylinders and never changed the oil and flat footed it
It either going to go or blow
@@Dannyjoemustanggt the 300 I6 was in the video.
the 7.3 will literally run on any flammable oil product. 10w30 oil? it'll run paint thinner? it'll run. gas? of course. ATF? yep that too
Exclusively North American.
Liam Godden I was literally just thinking this.
That 2.3 “pinto” motor also made its way into the svo, turbo coupe, xr7, xr4ti.....great little motor
Also forgot bda
Do the 24 valve BOA and BOB engines count as a unique engine, or just as a Cologne derivative?
the US lima sohc pinto is not the same as the european EAO pinto. Albeit look similar. The final guise of the pinto was cosworth YBT
Nothing better than being on the autobahn in Germany and hearing a new Mustang GT blow past! Best sounding car in all of Europe.
5th thumbs down.....no mention of the great barra engine....i hate fords but even i will admit its one of the best straight 6 ever made
I hope you do a Part 2. Ford has so many great engines. It must have been difficult to narrow it down to just nine for this video. Continue the excellent work.
Hey what about the 351 Cleveland and the 351 Windsor?
The windsor small block family was represented by the 289 therefore I count the 351 as included.
The 351W is the engine Ford should have used and not wasted thiers and our time with the waste of time 302.
Been waiting for this video. Great job as usual visio
Obviously the coyote is on this list
The Real Bleach yup, #1, but if you watch you'll see it's not even mentioned. What a fucking joke.
Visio! No Barra love? Disappoint!
8:08 That actually sounds like a 6.0 Powerstroke. The 7.3 has a more classic low pitch exhaust rumble whereas the 6.0 has a more pronounced high pitch buzz with a slight undertone. Both sound good but the 7.3 is hands down more reliable out of the box, 6.0 can be reliable after you put about $7K +/- into it.
what about the barra?
Robert Mertz's videos are some of my favorite of the Model-T being used as a real truck. Hats off to him!
NO PINTO!? WTF?!
Jerrypintoswe lol wtf?
Kwan Linus
2.3L Lima I4
Powered Ford passenger cars from the 1970s to the early 90s.
In the UK that Ford SOHC came in 1.3, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 formats.
@Liam Godden, Are you thinking of the "Kent" SOHC?
The "Kent" engine was the OHV engine first seen in the Mk1 Cortina/Ford Anglia 105E, then modified to the "Crossflow" head for the Mk2 Cortina and Mk1 Ford Escort. They still get used in kit cars, some stroked out to 1750, with twin DCOE Webber carbs and silly power for such a basic engine! People forget Ford Europe made some nice i4 and V6 engines, except in Europe :)
Great list , and right on !!!
You forgot the Barra I6!
As soon as I saw this, a big ass smile grew on my face as my inner Ford fanboy went crazy :)
you missed the barra
Lol that video of the EcoBoost that's in the winter, is no doubt Alaska those mountains are just unmistakable.
No 4.0L Barra????!!!???!! Wtf man
At least the Cobra jet came up. But I would of loved to see the beauty of the fe series, 390
Powerstroke = Powerjoke?
*I DON’T THINK SO!!*
LOL
Nah, the 7.3's of the 90's and early 2000's are really solid engines....it's the bullshit EGR systems (the really new ones they started putting in after 06 or 07) but to be fair, it affects the Duramax and the Cummins as well, when those EGR systems malfunctions on these newer diesels they have a tendancy to royally fuck up the engines that they are installed in...
Josh Bacon they are better built than any cummins tranny or motor
Only the 6.0L powerstrokes those things are nitorious for having bad head gaskets
Ford did not build any Powerstrokes until the Scorpion 6.7 ( 2011-present ). The 7.3 to 6.4 PSDs are all Navistar products with the 7.3 being the best one.
I drive a 2018 F350 with the 6.7 and nothing slows it down
the 2.9 v6 cologne deserves more attention, really strong engines
where is the 4.0 barra
Hey good vid. Could easily be Ford’s best 20 engines. As others have pointed out lots of good engines didn’t make the list. I got 2 more. The 03-04 supercharged mustang cobra and its brethren the 4.6 4cam all aluminum engine. Friggin work of art
BLABLABLA
You forgot one of the best engines, the Ford GAA. Double over head cam , dual carbs, 500 hp at 2600 rpms and over 1000 footpounds of torque at just off idle. And one of the largest V8's at 1100 cubic inches. This was in the 1940's.
You forgot the very best engine. The le mons 390 that was in the ford GT.
that was a 427 in the gt40
thats what I thought too because I have never heard of a 490 ford from factory lol
bigassfordsd
Yeah, but built from the 390 block. 360 to 428FE are all the same block.
Ben Hawke: You left out the 332 and 352, which were also FEs. .
you did have 490 in your original post though. And like mortensen1961 said, there were also Fe engine smalller that the 360 as well.
What no 4.6L V8 in the Mustangs its one of most reliable engines Ford has you can drive them hard with no problem and have a good sound and torque to them I have a 05 GT.
And if you want to add mods to that generation 197s , no problem.
The 1000 cc Ecoboost is got a good rep among auto engineers, it deserved to be on the list
Ecoboost owners will spend like 10 grand to be like yeah I beat a stock 5.0 and then blow the head gasket
nah my Taurus SHO stays cool even in this Arizona heat
the 4.6L OHC came before the 5.4... the 4.6 uses lots of the same parts as the 5.4... the 4.6 revs 2500rpm higher... its softer torque curve makes it better for a car. the torque impulses of the LS engines cause the vehicle to have small losses of traction on each cylinder fire. can see that by observing slow motion replays of burn outs just worming up the tires... they have to put tires on them that have a vary elastic side wall, or they will loose time.
Ford use to be jokingly called, "Fix Or Repair Daily".
or found on road dead
Seems like every car company has one of those backronyms.
For some reason, my favorite is Fiat-"Fix It Again, Tony"
Those are some nice so using engines thanks for the video Visio racer.
Barra? The first crossflow? Pretty much every straight six in between?
And don't forget the Windsor/Cleveland which gave the XY falcon its world record speed....
they missed what ford even says is by far the best motor they have ever built the 6.2l out of the raptor and superduty. Ford has even said its probably a better motor than the 7.3 diesel
My Top 5 Ranking of the best engines from Ford:
1. Cosworth V8 from Benetton F1in the late 80's
2. 5.2L Voodoo V8 in the Shelby GT350
3. 5.0L Coyote V8
4. 2.5L Five Cylinder from the 2nd gen Focus
5. 5.4L Ford Modular Supercharged V8 from the 2005 Ford GT
Philip Fox 2.0 The 5.8 from the GT500 is codenamed "Trinity". Just sayin' brotha.
What about the 4.6 l v8 they used in ford crown Victoria's and ford mustangs from the early 90s to the mid 2000s
No one even mentioned the 6.8 V10. Had one in a work truck that lasted over 400k miles and is still going
At least the 300 wasn’t forgotten
There are a few he missed for sure. 351C, 427 "cammer", 1.6 Kent, 2.3 Lima, and the 390. 351C favorite of drag and stock car racers. 1.6 Kent engine was a Formula Ford engine at one time. The Lima engine back in the day was a favorite of mini stock car racers. The 390 probably the most underrated of the bunch
Don't forget the 460.
YEEESSSSS. HE PUT THE 300 I6 IN! probibly my 2nd favorite Ford motor besides a flatty v8
I came across a 7.3 Powerstroke the other day with 450,000 miles on it. The guy was in for an oil change, i couldn't believe it was that healthy for almost a half million miles.
You have to make a part 2 video of Ford engines!
Idk about y'all but that flat head sounds damn good
My 4.9 f150 has 445,000 miles on it and I still daily it everywhere and still running strong just took a trip from Richmond VA to Outer Banks North Carolina and still getting 17 to 20 highway miles
*reads through the comments* im not sure whats worse, the angry ford fans or the angry aussie ford fans XD. nice vid btw.
Loved that flathead powered tractor. But I hope Farmer Brown didn't try plowing all day listening to those straight pipes!
You missed the legendary Ford 4.6, 2V, 3V, 4V
How about the Boss302 and the 427 Side oiler?
Love Ford!
Own many including Ford GT'S
FIRST ON RACE DAY!
Zetec?
Ford barra motor you missed so much better than some of the engines mentioned not to mention if ford used it in the 6cyl mustang they would sell alot more reliabilty wise and power wise they are great
The Coyote and Barra should of made the list before the Ecoboost
Ford 289 is the greatest ford engine of all time just because of the sound. Still doesn’t beat the Lexus LFA’s sound.
0:28 Ford engines are so strong they will run even without the heads. Damn!!
I have to say I am very curious how the owner set that up. Where's the fuel going that should be entering the cylinders?
Yup that 5.0 fuelie from 79- 2000 years were the grandfather of all these newer computer controlled engines!!
Great choices!
The 7.3, 6.9 idi where damn bombproof!
