10/10 reaction; dunno if you caught it, but when he said the funniest thing happened in january of 2020 when he was ready to start performing again. he meant the world shutting down from covid
I definitely missed this the first time.
The album is called Inside because he filmed it during quarantine.
The last track is a fake laugh track, it’s supposed to accentuate how fucked up he felt. After five years of working on himself like mentally, when he was finally ready to get out there again, all of a sudden Covid. The last track is meant to make you feel how he felt. Extremely fucking uncomfortable.
Not just that, the song to me is describing a panic attack and the main reason he stopped performing. He spent 5 years getting better and was ready to perform.... Then the funniest thing happened, his panic attacks began again. The lyrics are you feeling nervous, are you having fun, it's almost over, it's just begun. If you've experienced panic attacks they are exactly every lyric he sings.
He missed it because he pauses too much
BTW, he won a Grammy for this (or it's one of the others from his special "Inside")

The lyrics were "put your hands up" and "put your heads down" and "pray for me" all while lightly swaying back and forth like people do with songs of worship
Bo Burnham is an ARTIST who uses comedy to make music... but what he does is art!
This song makes me think on how Nietzsche described an aspect of nihilism. Reaching the point of depression with the world and your surroundings when you begin to feel nothing you do matters or changes the big picture so you decide its best to give up entirely on the world and yourself. Yet there at that realization is when another often unseen or hidden motivational view appears. The idea that because nothing matters and because nothing will change molds itself into a free landscape of expression. When nothing matters you have no reason to care either way what people or the world say and in a dark way that is liberating to many people. Its the philosophical manifestation of things being darkest before the light. For some people thats what it takes to believe in themselves again. It might not be conventional but it has its merits.

People always want to shoot for greatness, be remembered in history books. If you look at the lives of people that are remembered through history they tend to have really shitty lives.
No one will remember you in a hundred years. And that's okay. Even famous people won't be remembered in a thousand. Live for you. Live for this moment.
Everything will always be okay and simultaneously not okay. Your best day is someone's worst day and nothing you do will change that.
That’s called absurdism. You realize it doesn’t really matter and you realize how stupid and ridiculous it all is so you just live to the fullest because you can and you live until you die so just live and enjoy it.
Watching this video on its own does it and you a disservice. It’s like the grand finale of the special “inside”, which he wrote, directed, shot and edited alone in his guest house during the first wave of the covid pandemic.
It definitely packs much more of a punch when you see it as part of the whole piece than just a stand alone song. It does slap though.

The fact that this song is what won Bo and Grammy is always so weird to me, because I feel like he’s got so many better songs, more emotional, more funny, more technically advanced, etc, but I feel like this song still really shows a mastery in making something so minimal into something incredible, which really encompasses the spirit of this special as a whole

Just a note, he quit performing stand up live but he didn't live as a recluse doing nothing. He wrote, directed and startred in his movie 8th grade. He directed a number of other people's stand up shows. He was in quite a few movies and and TV spots. He maintained his solid relationship with his longtime girlfriend and family.
Did therapy.
And got signed to do music composition for Sesame Street projects.
Decided to be creative in more collaborative ways than just having "all eyes on me".
